Lesson 1: Basics of Image Editing IMAGES deliver context, information and emotions words struggle to convey 1. 2. Cropping- used to cut out distracting background or irrelevant objects Resizing and Compression- adjust the size and resolution of your image appropriately Size- actual height and width of your image Resolution- refers to the number of dots per inch (dpi) or pixels Correcting- check whether they need generalized correction Sharpening or Softening Sharpening- used to bring out image details that was not there before Pixel sharpening- applied to the pixels Edge sharpening- applied to all the pixels the software can identify as being on the edge Softening- used to soften a small flaw or part of a rough edge Raster Image- stored in a computer in the form of pixels Automatic Image Enhancement- basic automatic image improvement features Photo cleaner- allows changing the enhancement settings so that you could adjust the process for your camera Digital Data Compression- many image file data use data compression to reduce file size and save storage space Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG)- uses lossy compression where in the greater the compression the more information is lost Portable Networks Group (PNG)lossless, no information is lost when the file is saved.

ELEMENTS OF INTERFACE Adobe Photoshop- a seriously powerful photo and image editing application 1. 2. Toolbar- contains a bunch of icons that represent the different tools Panes- also most important feature of the Photoshop interface. All sorts of information are displayed in these panes Menu Bar- contains all the man functions of Photoshop File Menu- contains all the stuff you expect. It lets you open and close documents with a few extras Edit Menu- houses all the expected options as well as fill and stroke and other imagealtering functions Image Menu- contains items that can affect a whole image for the most part Layer Menu- similar to the Image Menu. It allows you to make changes to an image without altering you original image data Select Menu- gives you some options regarding selections, including the ability to save selections, reverse or add them

Filter Menu- allows you to apply filters to any part of your image View Menu- where you can change the view settings Window Menu- allows you to toggle back and forth between hide and show for each interface element Help Documentation- this menu contains 2 features: resize image and export transparent image Options Bar- located directly underneath the menus. It reflects the changes that can be made to how that specific tool operates Document Window- displays the file youre working on Workspace- it is where you create and manipulate your documents and files using various elements

OPENING A PHOTOSHOP DOCUMENT: 1. Click File on the menu bar, then select New

SAVING A PHOTOSHOP DOCUMENT: 1. 2. Click the File Menu Click Save As

Choose the file format (e.g. PSD) you wish to save the file.

Lesson 3: Photoshop Toolbar PHOTOSHOP TOOLBAR:

1. Selection Tools- used to facilitate the process of making selections of shapes, colors, and objects inside Photoshop Crop Tool (C key)- works similarly to the Rectangular Marquee Tool. The difference is when you press Enter it crops your image Lasso Tool (L key)- allows you to make selections of irregular shapes Lasso tool- allows you to draw the selection by dragging the cursor freehand Polygonal Lasso tool- helps you to create a selection composed of straight lines Magnetic Lasso tool- works like a combination of the other two lassos. As you drag, the selection maps to natural borders in the image Marquee Selection Tool (M Key)- allows you to select regions in your image to alter, copy, move and apply filters Rectangular Marquee tool- default selection setting. You can make a selection of any rectangular size Elliptical Marquee tool- select a round area Single Row- select a 1 pixel region that is as wide as your image

Single Column- select a 1 pixel region that is as tall as your image Move Tool (V key)- moves an entire layer at a time Magic Wand Tool (W key)- to make a selection, you click in a region and a selection appears around similar colored pixels Slice Tool (K key)- used to cut images into slices Slice Select Tool- used to select slices Cloning (S key)- a great way to unwanted objects. It allows you to duplicate part of an image

Path Selection Tool (A key)- related to Pen tool. You use this when working with paths Text Tool or Horizontal Type Tool (T key)click a single point and start typing Rectangular Tool or Shape Tool (U key)- by default it draws a Shape Layer in the form of a rectangle

Alteration Tools Healing Brush Tool (J key)- you can use this to repair scratches or blemishes Brush Tool (B key)- one of the first tools ever. It paints your image in whatever color or size you have selected Clone Stamp (S key)- a direct copy of the information from the first selected area Art History Brush Tool (Y key?)- used to paint over an image using the source data from a specified history state Erase Tool (E key)- the anti-brush tool. It works like an eraser Paint Bucket Tool (G key)- used to fill an image or selection with any color of your choice Gradient Tool (G key)- use this to make a gradation of colors Blur Tool (R key)- blurs the sharp edges of an image Dodge Tool (O key)- used to lighten whatever area you use it on as long as its not absolute black Drawing and Selection Tools Pen Tool (P key)- used for drawing smoothedged paths

Assisting Tools Notes Tool (N key)- serves as a comment feature usually used for electronic text. Like digital post-it notes Eyedropper Tool (I key)- takes color samples from colors on the page and displays Color Boxes Hand Tool (H key)- allows you to move around within the image, for moving the entire image within a window Zoom Tool (Z key)- magnifies or reduces the display of any area in your image window Color Boxes and Models Foreground and Background Colors- uses foreground color to paint fill and stroke selections. The background color to make gradient fills and fill in the erased area of the image Default Colors Icon Switch Colors Icon Foreground Color Box Background Color Box Change Screen Mode- used to view images on your entire screen

Lesson 4: Image Menu IMAGE MENU- this menu groups together features for working with images and your canvas 1. Mode- what you use to change the color mode and appearance on the entire image RGB color- red, green, blue and represents a mode of color selection that determines

each color based on its red, green and blue values CMYK color- cyan, magenta, yellow, black. Each color is determined by four values for the four colors of ink Adjustment- you can change the colors and the overall tonal quality of your image. Brightness- makes the image brighter or darker by a specified amount Contrast- defined as the separation between the darkest and brightest areas of the image Image Size- you use this function to resize the an image Pixel Dimensions- refers to the images size on screen Document Size- refers to the size which the document will print Canvas Size- an images canvas size that can provide more working area for your image Anchor Section- you can anchor contents to a side or corner of the window Crop- make a selection, go to Image and select crop. Then everything outside your selection will disappear

It should now appear in the layers pane (but since it is currently empty, there will be no sign of it in the image).

B. Selecting Layers 1. Click a layer in the Layers panel. 2. To select multiple layers, click the first layer and then CTRL-click the last layer. 3. To select all layers, choose Select > All Layers. 4. To deselect a layer, Ctrl-click on the layer that you want to deselect. C. Arranging Layers 1. If you want to delete a layer, you can either drag it to the delete layer icon at the bottom of the layers pane or select the layer and click the delete layer icon. D. Merging layers 1. Select the layer you want to be on top of the new merged layer, make sure the other layer you would like to merge is directly beneath it, and select Merge Down from the Layer menu. The two layers are now one. 2. If you want to merge down an entire file of layers, select "Flatten image" from the layers menu and then all layers will be squashed into one. 3. When you merge or flatten layers that contain text layers, you will be asked whether you would like to rasterize that text (that is, convert it to an image and lose the ability to edit it). It is a good idea to copy any layer and hide them before you rasterize and merge. 4. It saves you the work of completely recreating layers if you decide to change text.

Lesson 6: Layer Management LAYER MANAGEMENT- creating multiple layers lets you easily control how your artwork is displayed, edited and printed LAYER PANE 1. Layer Blending Mode- blend modes affect how the pixels of a layer will interact with the layers below Layer Locking Option- lock layers fully or partially to protect their contents Layer Visibility- toggles the layer between hidden and displayed

Layer Mask- allows you to control a layers level of transparency 6. Create a New Set- very much like having a virtual folder in your Layers panel 7. New Fill or Adjustment- fill layers let you fill a layer with a solid color, gradient or pattern. Adjustment layers let you experiment with color and make tonal adjustments 8. Opacity- controls the transparency of anything on that layer Layer Management A. Adding New Layers You can think of the layers as clear pages overlaying each other. The layers pane provides a good visualization of this concept because the layers appear in the layers pane as they are organized in the document. To demonstrate this, add a new layer and type a little on it. 1. Go to Layer> and Select New Layer. Type a name for the layer in the dialog box that appears and click enter.

Working with Text Text Tool- This is the tool you need in working with text in your Photoshop document. Just select the text/type tool and you are now ready to type your desired text. Use the options bar to change the style of highlighted text.

Choose a size for your font by clicking on the triangle to the right of the Size selection box. This will open a list of commonly-used preset sizes that you can choose from, ranging from 6 pt up to 72 pt. 4.Choosing the Text Color The Options Bar is also where you choose a color for
