About PDMS
Based in Karachi, Pakistan, PDMS is developing Urdu Software products since 1986.
The nationally acclaimed ‘Nastaleeq Nizami’ - Urdu Desktop Publishing software has
boosted tremendously the use of computers in Pakistan by making them write
beautifully in Nastaleeq Script of Urdu language. More products include Urdu
Computer Nizam, Urdu 98, Ruqqa-UrduEmail, QuranMajeedCD and Imagine
(Criminal Identification & Sketching System with East Asian Facial Library). PDMS
has also developed fonts for the regional languages like Sindhi and Pushto besides
designing a number of Nastaleeq and Naskh fonts PDMS is also constantly engaged in
developing Internet websites and portals and has designed a number of Urdu portals
including urduseek.com, urdunews.net & cityislam.com. The areas in which PDMS
has technical expertise make it a unique venture in Pakistan.

1. Run ‘Setup.exe’ provided in PDMS Jauhar CD.
2. Click ‘Next’ in welcome screen.

System Requirements:
Processor: Pentium III or faster
Internet connection for one time activation
Operating System: MS Windows 2000 or later
Application Software: Microsoft Office XP or later

3. Read & accept the license agreement and click ‘Next’.

NOTE: If you have single user license of PDMS Jauhar you will
select ‘Single User Mode / Server Mode’. For server versions of
PDMS Jauhar, ‘Client Mode’ is selected when installing PDMS
Jauhar on client machines. Name of computer running PDMS Jauhar
server will be entered in ‘Server Name’ field in this case.
Registration steps are not required when installing client mode of
PDMS Jauhar.

NOTE: If this dialog box does not appear, right-click ‘PDMS

Jauhar’ icon in task tray and select ‘Re-launch’ from the shortcut

11. Fill all fields properly (All fields are required). Your product’s serial
number is pasted on PDMS Jauhar Installation CD. If you don’t have
internet connection then skip to step 13.

NOTE: Pressing ‘Trial’ button will run PDMS Jauhar in trial version
which is valid for 15 days from installation. Trial version has some 15. Fill in all fields properly and click ‘Submit’ button.

You need to setup languages & keyboards in Windows OS to properly
type Urdu text. These steps are slightly different for Windows XP and
Windows 2000.

Settings for Windows XP

1. Select ‘Regional and Language Options’ from Start=>Control

Panel. Select ‘Languages’ tab. Select ‘Install files for complex
script and right-to-left languages (including Thai)’. Click
‘Apply’ button. You may be asked for Windows XP Installation
CD to copy necessary files. System reboot may also be required.

Note down your activation key.

17. Enter this key in the dialog box described in step 13.
18. On successful registration, following message will appear:

2. After reboot, again select ‘Regional and Language Options’
from Control Panel. Select ‘Languages’ tab. Click ‘Details’
button. Following Text Services dialog box will appear:
1. Add ‘Arabic’ language support in Windows 2000 from
‘Regional Options’ available from ‘Start=>Settings=>Control
Panel’. Make sure that ‘Arabic’ checkbox from language
settings of the system in ‘General’ tab is selected. Press ‘Apply’
button. You may be asked for Windows 2000 Installation CD to
copy necessary files. System reboot may also be required.

3. Click ‘Add…’ button. Select ‘Urdu’ in Input language field and

‘PDMS – Phonetic’ in Keyboard layout/IME field. Click OK.
2. After system reboot, run ‘Start=>Settings=>Control
Panel=>Keyboard’ and select ‘Input Locales’ tab from the
keyboard properties dialog box.

Following keyboard layouts are also included in PDMS Jauhar

that you can add using the same procedure:

• PDMS – PakUrdu
• PDMS – NLA (National Language Authority)
• PDMS – Monotype
• PDMS – Urdu Mahir
• PDMS – Phonetic-2
• PDMS – Olympia

For adding Sindhi keyboard layout, click add button again and
select ‘Urdu’ in Input Locale field and ‘Sindhi Phonetic’ in
Keyboard layout/IME field. Click OK.
Following Urdu keyboard layouts are also included in PDMS
Jauhar that you can add using the same procedure:
Displaying numerals in Urdu
If you want numerals to appear in Urdu, you can change the global settings of
numerals in regional options control panel. But use this setting carefully as it
will change all numerals in your OS to Urdu format. Steps for changing this
setting are slightly different for Windows XP and Windows 2000.
Urdu numerals in Windows XP
1. Goto ‘Regional and Language Options’ control panel and click
‘Customize…’ button. Following dialog box will appear:

• PakUrdu
• NLA (National Language Authority)
• Monotype
• Phonetic
• Phonetic-2
• Olympia

4. Click OK for Keyboard properties dialog box.

5. Enable font smoothing option by running ‘Start=> Settings=>

Control Panel=> Display’ and select ‘Effects’ tab. Select
‘Smooth edges of screen fonts’.

Urdu numerals in Windows 2000 Chapter 3:
1. Goto ‘Regional Options’ control panel and goto ‘Numbers’ tab. Using PDMS Jauhar

Start WordPad by selecting Programs=>Accessories=>WordPad.

For Windows XP, click icon in the task tray. Following menu will appear:

Urdu in MS WordXP
Select ‘Urdu’ from above menu. If more than one keyboard layouts were added for
Urdu language then a new keyboard icon will appear in the task tray. Clicking on it
will show all keyboard layouts that were added for Urdu language. Select ‘PDMS
Jauhar’ from this menu.

NOTE: If only one keyboard layout was added then above icon and menu will not
appear.

For Windows 2000, click icon in the task tray. Following menu will appear. The
menu will contain all keyboard layouts that were added previously. Select ‘Urdu –
PDMS Jauhar’.

Select ‘PDMS_NastaliqNafees’ from the font menu in Wordpad and select a larger
point size like 48. Now you can type Urdu from your keyboard. Type ‘n a t e l y q’ to To type Urdu in Microsoft WordXP
type Nastaliq in Urdu.
1. To have text begin from the right, click Right-to-Left on the Formatting
toolbar.
2. Select UR from language menu.
3. Select PDMS_NastaleeqNafees font from font menu.

… Now you can type in Urdu.

Use columns in Urdu documents Slide shows/presentation in PowerPointXP
You can specify the direction of columns in an Urdu document by selecting
“Columns…” command from the “Format” menu and then select right-to-left
direction from the dialog box.

Use tables in Urdu documents

1. Place the insertion point in the table.
2. On the Table menu, click Table Properties, and then click the Table tab.
3. Under Table direction, select the table direction you want.

3. Select PDMS_NastaleeqNafees font from font menu.

… Now you can type in Urdu.

Urdu databases using MS AccessXP From “International” tab, you can also change the default direction/alignment
to left-to-right.

In MS AccessXP you can change the default font and the default direction for
the database/datasheet for table views, etc.

To change the default font choose “Options” command from the “Tools”
menu and from the “Datasheet” tab select default font to
PDMS_NastaliqNafees.

Urdu spreadsheets in MS ExcelXP From “International” tab, you can also change the default direction of the
spreadsheet as well as change the view of the sheet as right-to-left.

Urdu DTP using MS PublishersXP

All features are similar as explained in WordXP section.

You can change the font of the spreadsheet by choosing “Options” command
from the “Tools” menu and from the “General” tab select standard font to
PDMS_NastaliqNafees.
