Vomiting

According to the theory of traditional Chinese medicine, vomiting is due to the


adverse ascent of stomach qi and can be divided into two types: One with vomiting
without noise, and one with vomiting noise without vomitus. However vomitus and a
vomiting noise are usually present together.
Acute gastritis, spasm of cardia, spasm of pylorus, hepatitis, pancreatitis, and
cholecystitis with vomiting classified by modern medicine can be treated by the
following methods.
Applications of hand therapy:
Massage therapy:
Location: Palm, dorsal inter-osseous spaces, Laogong (PC 8), Daling (PC 7),
Zhongkui (EX-UE 4), Dagukong (EX-UE 5) and stomach acupoint.
Method of manipulation: Heavy rubbing maneuver applied over palm; pushing
maneuver along dorsal inter-osseous spaces: heavy digit-pressing and kneading
maneuvers at Laogong (PC 8), Zhongkui (EX-UE 4) and Dagukong (EX-UE 5)
acupoints" and digit-pressing maneuver at Daling (PC 7) and stomach acupoint. The
heavy manipulation is applied at acute stages of disease.
Acupuncture therapy:
At regular and extra acupoints:
Location: Neiguan (PC 6) and Daling (PC 7).
Method of manipulation: The needles are inserted and retained for 30 minutes after
medium needling stimulation.
At reflective point:
Location: Chest point.
Method of manipulation: The needle is inserted for one cm and retained for five
minutes.
At reflective areas:
Location: Upper abdomen area in palmar reflective areas and ulnar reverse palmar
reflective areas.
Method of manipulation: The needle is inserted and then removed right after twisting,
lifting, and thrusting stimulation.
At special acupoint beside the second metacarpal bone:
Location: Stomach acupoint.
Method of manipulation: The needle is inserted for 3.3 cm and retained for 20
minutes.
Hand qigong: Physical and breath exercise for difficult intake of food due to
functional disturbance of spleen and stomach.
The patient stands erect with feet apart at a distance the width of the shoulder. The
upper body is slightly inclined forward and turned to the left with lower limbs
stationary; the dorsum of left hand is held by right palm and also turned to left side;
the upper body is stretched with the head and arms turned to right side, and then the

upper body is also turned to right side; the body is kept motionless and the body's
force and qi is held stable for a while; and finally the starting posture with body erect
is assumed with the arms freely hanging beside the body. The exercise of both sides
may be repeated 21 times (Fig. 41).
Herb-holding therapy:
Herbs: Banxia (pinellia tuber) 10 g and Chenpi (mandarium peel) 12 g.
Method of manipulation: A powder of these herbs is mixed with a paste made of green
onion stalks 6 g and fresh ginger l0 g to prepare pills for holding in the palm. If the
vomiting cannot be controlled, a decoction of fresh ginger 9 g is orally administered.
