Whooping cough

This is an acute infectious

disease of the respiratory
system in children. In the
first 2 weeks of the disease,
children may suffer from
cough with thin and foamy
sputum, sneezing, running
nose, thin and white tongue
coating, floating and strong
pulse and pink finger
venules; in the spastic
cough period of 4-6 weeks,
children may suffer from repeated attacks of paroxysmal cough with wheezing in
throat and
sticky sputum, worse at night; and in the recovery stage of 2-3 weeks, the frequency
and duration of paroxysmal cough is reduced, wheezing gradually disappears,
vomiting is also reduced, the cough becomes weak and the sputum thin and scanty,
the lips are pale, the tongue is pale with scanty coating, and the finger venules are
clear and pale.

Treatment:

Foot massage: The massage is applied to pituitary gland (4), lung (14), adrenal gland
(21), kidney (22) and lymph nodes (upper body, 39) reflecting areas. The foot is held
in one hand by the physician and the flexed first interphalangeal joint of the other
index finger is used to apply pressure from medial side to lateral side of lung
reflecting area 4-5 times, and to apply massage on other reflecting
areas 3-4 times (Fig. 90).

Foot acupuncture:

(1) Meridianal acupoints: At Qiaoyin (GB 44) and Dazhong (KI 4) acupoints, a lifting,
thrusting and twisting stimulation of reducing technique without moxibustion is
applied and the needles are retained for 15 to 20 minutes.
(2) Foot acupoint: A redu,cing acupuncture technique without moxibustion is applied
at Lung (FA-P 6) acupoint and the needle is retained for 15 to 20 minutes.

External application of drugs:

(1) The powder of Mahuang (ephedra) 1.5 gm, wheat flour 9 gm and sweat wine 9 gm

are mixed together to prepare small cakes for application on the related reflecting
areas, 2-3 times a day.
(2) Baibu (stemona root), Mahuang (ephedra), Baiji (bletilla tuber), Huanglian
(golden thread root) and Gancao (licorice) 60 gm each and Lugen (reed) 150 gm are
fried in sesame oil with Huangdan (yellow lead) to prepare a paste after the charred
herbs are removed. The paste is applied once on 2-3 reflecting areas to treat the
patient at an early stage of the disease or in the spastic cough period without
complications.
