ISLINGTON MUSIC WORKSHOP Key Technology and Skills Development Objectives By the end of level 3 you will: Be a fully independent user of Logic Pro, ProTools and Ableton Live. Be a fully independent user of the audio and DAW control features of the SSL Nucleus and the SSL Matrix Be an experienced user of the SSL AWS948 through group recording and mixing sessions Be familiar with the use of the SSL Duality as an analogue console and a DAW controller Be able to recognise the similarities between the functions and features of all SSL consoles in use at IMW
BRIEF: (Including Vocational Context) An understanding of the roles, relationships and contracts in the recording industry is fundamental to successful working relationships and career progression. As part of your work in the recording studio you will be required to work in groups and individually, developing essential communication skills. TASKS 1. Roles, Relationships, and Contracts in the Recording Industry. You are required to write a review of the different roles associated with working in a recording studio and to discuss the range of contracts that people working in the music and sound recording sector may sign. Unit 39 The Sound and Music Industry GC: P2, M2, D2, P3, M3, D3
Sound Theory
UNITS and Grading Criteria Covered by this assignment: Unit 1: Acoustics for Musicians GC: P1, M1, D1, P3, M3, D3 Unit 2: Audio Engineering Principles: GC: P1 M1 D1 BRIEF: (Including Vocational Context) A thorough theoretical understanding of the physics of sound and digital audio is a fundamental part of an engineers skill set, as well as being important knowledge for studio musicians. TASKS 1. Human Hearing Submit a written report covering the structure and function of the human ear, hearing damage and protection, and the limits of hearing, within the context of the studio environment. Unit 1: Acoustics for Musicians GC: P3, M3, D3 2. Audio Theory Submit a written report as a sound engineer that identifies, explains and analyses the fundamentals of the physics of sound. Write a review of digital audio principles and assess the quality of digital equipment. Unit 1: Acoustics for Musicians GC: P1, M1, D1 Unit 2: Audio Engineering Principles: GC: P1 M1 D1
To achieve a Merit you must: Explain the function of each part Explain hearing damage and how it can be caused Explain methods for protecting against hearing damage Explain the limits of human hearing (amplitude and frequency)
To achieve a Distinction you must: Analyse how the parts work together as a mechanism. Analyse hearing damage and how it can be caused Analyse methods for protecting against hearing damage Analyse the limits of human hearing (amplitude and frequency)
To achieve a Merit you must answer the following questions, in addition to those required for a Pass:
Analog Expanding on your definitions above, explain how sound travels through air. Explain the unit of measurement for amplitude Explain the unit of measurement for frequency. Digital Expand on your definitions to explain how sound is converted from an analog to digital signal for recording and/or storage. Expand on your definitions to explain how sound is converted from a digital to an analog signal for playback.
PASS To achieve a Pass you must complete the following tasks: Use diagrams to illustrate the connections and parameters of each effect listed above. Give examples of where you have used them.
MERIT To achieve a Merit you must complete the following tasks, in addition to those required for a Pass: Using your diagrams, explain the parameters of each of the effects listed above.
DISTINCTION To achieve a Distinction you must complete the following tasks, in addition to those required for a Pass and a Merit: Assess how the use of these effects may contribute to or impair an effective mix. (Give 2 examples / reasons for using each effect).
PASS To achieve a Pass you must complete the following tasks: Define the principles of musical instruments Describe the textures of varied sound sources and the effect of different recording environments upon them. Recommend pieces of equipment that best suit the specified requirements, with a degree of independence (i.e. some tutor input) BTEC LEVEL 3 DIPLOMA IN MUSIC TECHNOLOGY
DISTINCTION To achieve a Distinction you must complete the following tasks, in addition to those required for a Pass and a Merit: Assess how the principles of musical instruments affect sound production Critically comment upon the textures of varied sound sources and the effect of different recording environments upon them. Justify your equipment recommendations and explain the audio principles behind them.
