Technical Data Sheet

The RSWire product line provides computer-aided engineering tools tailored to meet the needs of engineers, designers, and implementers of electrical control systems. RSWire products replace the drafting board, mechanical CAD, and electronic schematics software with a comprehensive software solution for producing accurate, error-free schematics with simultaneous manufacturing and support documentation. RSWire addresses control system engineering concerns, as well as traditional drafting tasks and creates control schematics quickly using libraries of symbols and custom macros created from existing designs. Intelligent wires logically connect symbols and break automatically as symbols are placed, ensuring an accurate logical representation of the design. RSWire assigns device IDs; checking for duplicates throughout an entire project. Error-prone manual design checking is eliminated by RSWire automatic cross-referencing of contacts and signals. RSWire supports industry standards such as JIC and IEC, as well as the creation of user-defined symbols to meet corporate and customer requirements. When the job spans disciplines, RSWire can be used to document designs which include hydraulic and pneumatic controls. Since RSWire runs within an AutoCAD environment, your designs are integrated with familiar drafting tools and industry standard data formats such as DWG and DXF. RSWire provides a Microsoft Access parts database in an Industry Standard format for building your design documentation as you engineer and draw your schematics allowing for complete and accurate documentation. RSWire Designer for AutoCAD 14.01 now comes with an open object model to allow the user to create Visual Basic applications which can automate the schematic generation from a spreadsheet or database and comes complete with sample code and object model manual. (Not available on RSWire Designer Stand-Alone versions.)

RSWire Designer is the Foundation of your Control Design Workstation

RSWire Designer automates your controls design and generates an intelligent schematic that is the foundation of your design and documentation. RSWire Designer (9371-EDES1 and EDES2) includes: An application-specific user interface An open object model for Visual Basic or Visual C++ scripting (Designer for AutoCAD 14.01 only). Specialized tools for placing symbols and connecting them with intelligent wires Creation and placement of Circuit Macros Automated device ID and part number assignment with real-time error checking Dynamic cross referencing of devices and signals across a project An Industrial Control Library (JIC or IEC) with hundreds of symbols Easy symbol creation from scratch, or by copying and editing existing RSWire symbols, and AutoCAD blocks or DWG files Automated or manual wire number generation Runs as an AutoCAD 14 application or with the AutoCAD OEM Technology engine inside Supports Microsoft Windows 95/98 and Windows NT RSWires built-in Navigator function is linked to virtually all portions of the design process allowing the engineer to navigate from a panel layout symbol to the schematic page of its logical partner. The navigator can assist in calling part number definitions from a symbol with an existing part number.

Using RSWire Designer

The RSWire user interface is tailored to the requirements of control system design. Familiar control and electrical design terminology is used throughout the interface. RSWire interfaces feature pull-down menus, side screen menus, command input, and toolboxes. RSWire commands produce sub-menus and input windows that step you through each function. Current project information is conveniently displayed directly under the pulldown menus, so you always know the context of the current page. Quick access buttons provide immediate availability for commonly used functions like zoom, pan, and project navigation. Symbol palettes provided with RSWire symbol catalogs provide visual representations prior to placing a symbol. Comprehensive RSWire Help is available by selecting the Help from the pull-down menus.

Installations and Locations usually correspond to physical

locations. For example, the project could consist of an entire production facility while each production line within the facility is designated as an Installation, and each control cabinet on a line is a Location. When graphical (drawing) pages are created, they are assigned to a specific Installation and Location. When support documentation is generated, it can also be sorted by

Installation and Location. The use of Installations and Locations

is optional.

Creating Schematics Drawings

To create a drawing, select the File - New Page function. This function produces a window where the parameters for a specific page can be defined. Installations and Locations are created by specifying their name in the Create Page window when a page is created. This screen also has a field for specifying a page size format. RSWire provides a number of ANSI and IEC page formats as well as allowing the creation of

Creating and Organizing a Project

RSWire organizes all the work related to a particular job into a project. Projects include schematics, terminal plan layouts, panel layouts, and wiring diagrams, as well as manufacturing support documentation such as part lists, labels, and connection information. The user can begin by defining the parameters that will apply throughout the project. This is done by activating the File - New

custom page formats (A, B, C, D, etc, vertical or horizontal). Once the Create Page window is completed, a blank drawing page in the selected format will appear on the screen. The user may now use various RSWire Draw and Modify functions to construct a schematic. These tools include:

Adding Symbols
Schematic symbols can be selected by entering the symbol name or by selecting a symbol from a symbol palette or digitizer tablet. Symbols from existing symbol catalogs can be added or custom symbols can be created by a variety of methods. A JIC or IEC based electrical symbol library is provided with RSWire. Symbol catalogs for IEC, ISA instrumentation, Hydraulic, and Pneumatic disciplines are also available separately.

Project function. After entering the project name and

description, the Project Parameters window appears, allowing the user to specify the grid size, character size, device ID format, and other relevant settings. Once the project is defined, the user can proceed to create drawing pages. Project drawings are organized in a hierarchy of

Installations, Locations, and Pages.

Intelligent Wires
RSWire uses logical wires to connect schematic symbols. Unlike mechanical drafting systems, RSWire can break wires which are drawn through symbols or have symbols placed onto them. RSWire recognizes wires as logical connections allowing RSWire to perform various error checking, wire numbering, and connection listing functions automatically. RSWire provides drawing lines and other geometry for use in creating symbols and adding drawing elements that do not have electrical properties.

Reusing Circuits
A group of symbols with part numbers, wires, and other graphics can be stored as an RSWire macro. A macro can be added to a drawing whenever a particular circuit needs to be reused; eliminating the need to re-enter individual symbols and wires. Device IDs and cross-referencing data are updated as the macro is added to a design. Part numbers and other design data are maintained on the newlyadded circuit.

Cut & Paste

Sections of existing projects and pages can be copied and pasted into the current drawing. Device IDs are automatically updated to reflect the device naming conventions of the current project.

Automatic ID Assignment
As RSWire adds a symbol, the Device ID is automatically assigned according to project design parameters. Device ID formats can be composed of device types, page numbers, line numbers, or sequential data. The Device ID can be accepted or a different Device ID can be entered. RSWire dynamically checks to ensure that a unique Device ID is assigned. When symbols are copied or a macro is placed, RSWire assigns the individual symbols with Device IDs in this manner.

Part Number Assignment

During symbol placement, the Search button can be selected to assign part number(s) to a symbol. The part number selection window provides a list of parts in the RSWire Microsoft Access parts database which are associated to the symbol being placed. Part numbers can be assigned from the list or the Search area of the selection window can be used to query the parts database. Part numbers can also be added to the symbol during creation of the symbol ensuring it will have that part number upon placement. All part numbers may be changed or removed at any time during the design process. Use the Navigator and select the displayed part number to view the complete database record for that part. By linking the schematic to the database in this manner, RSWire is able to automatically generate documentation such as Bill of Material and Job Costing Analysis. a project. As auxiliaries are assigned, device cross-referencing data is dynamically updated as contacts are added, moved, or deleted. RSWire checks to ensure that too many contacts of a particular type are not assigned to a parent device (5th contact of a 4-pole relay). This parent/child cross-referencing applies not only to contacts and coils, but can be used with parent symbols such as multi-position selector switches, PLC modules, hydraulic or pneumatic devices.

Dynamic or Real-time Device Cross Referencing

While placing a device with auxiliary contacts such as a motor starter or relay, RSWire prompts for a device type. A device type defines the type and layout of auxiliaries associated to the parent device. RSWire includes a large number of previously defined device types which can be selected and additional device types can be created quickly. A cross-reference box (or other graphic) is placed next to the parent device which will be used indicate the location of auxiliary contacts. RSWire dynamically cross-references contacts as each is added and assigned to the parent device. Cross-references are dynamically assigned across all pages of

Signal Cross-Referencing
Signal cross-referencing links signals from column to column and across multiple pages of a project. Outgoing and incoming signals are automatically labeled with the signals destination or source (page and line number). Signal cross-referencing is dynamic and is used by the automatic wire numbering function to identify wires that series through pages of the design like hot and neutral wires. Use the Navigator function to move to the parent or child throughout the project and also navigate to the other end of a signal wire by selecting the reference box.

Manual and Automatic Wire Numbering

RSWire can number wires manually, automatically or as a combination of the two methods. A variety of wire number formats are available using sequential numbers, prefixes, suffixes, line and page numbers. Wires can also be assigned many additional attributes including wire gauge and color.

PLC Symbols
RSWire Designer includes a catalog of over 1000 industrial control symbols as well as Allen-Bradley PLC module symbols. Select a PLC symbol from the PLC palette and place the symbol directly into the schematic. RSWire will display a PLC entry window where the slot number, rack number, and initial I/O address can be specified. RSWire will automatically address each terminal on the module based on the initial address and will allow for I/O description text. Description text can be imported from an existing text file. RSWire provides tools for importing text from PLC programming software such as the Rockwell Software RSLogix programming products. The text is automatically placed beside the appropriate address on the PLC symbol. During automatic wire numbering, RSWire can assign wire numbers that match the PLC addresses.

RSWire Database and Panel Layout

(9371-EDBA3)
The RSWire Database and Panel Layout option integrates generation of manufacturing documentation with the schematic design. This option provides access to an integrated RSWire parts database, panel layout tools, and extensive manufacturing report generation capabilities.

Modifying a Design
Modifying the design is simple with RSWire, the Modify pulldown provides functions for moving, copying, and stretching sections of a drawing or individual symbols and wires. Part numbers can be modified individually or replaced across a project. Project pages and Device IDs can be renumbered according to the requirements of your design.

Object Model
RSWire has an open object model and incorporates ActiveX Automation functions on versions running on top of AutoCAD R14.01 with VBA. Visual Basic, C++ or AutoLisp may be used to generate schematics using the object model properties and methods. The program comes with a complete Object Model manual for Visual Basic applications. Applications can be written to extract information from databases or spreadsheets to automatically generate schematic drawings.

Creating and Assigning Parts in RSWires Integrated Parts Database

Every device placed in an RSWire drawing can be assigned a part number that corresponds to a record stored in the RSWire Parts Database. This record can contain data such as the manufacturer, cost, dimensions, installation time, and additional items (sub-assemblies). The RSWire Parts Database includes a variety of example part records; additional parts can be added to the database through Database Data screen, or the database can be extracted and edited externally with spreadsheet or database tools.

Producing Panel Layouts with Dimensions

The RSWire Panel Layout function produces a layout quickly using the integrated schematic and the parts database. In the data record for each part in the RSWire parts database, the dimensions of a part (X,Y,Z), and the name of a physical layout symbol (L-DSFU) can be stored. The Layout Symbol can be an accurate physical representation of the part including mounting holes. Layout Symbols can be created in RSWire or imported from other catalogs such as existing AutoCAD DWG blocks/files, the AllenBradley ABECAD library, or the Autodesk PartSpec catalog. Some additional intelligence can be added to RSWire to make these new symbols into intelligent wire symbols. The use of 3D symbols can also be incorporated into RSWire. During panel layout, RSWire presents a list of all Device IDs for the selected installation. For each Device ID, the location, part number, dimensions, and layout symbol name are displayed. By selecting individual devices or groups of devices, RSWire brings up the Layout Symbol or a footprint box based on the X, Y, Z dimensions, for placement on the drawing. The device(s) can then be added at the desired location. The Device ID for each part is automatically placed on the symbol or box. Each device is checked off after placement into the panel to ensure accurate layouts. The Navigator function can now be used to link to the schematic pages.

RSWire Designer Terminal Block Plan Option (9371-ETBP3)

RSWire generates terminal and cable plans directly from the schematic design. Because RSWire connects symbols and wires logically, terminals can be recognized and used to construct terminal block plans automatically. RSWire will compile a list of terminal blocks and all wires connected to the blocks. Terminal strips with connection data

Creating Manufacturing and Purchasing Reports

RSWire can automatically generate a wide variety of support documentation directly from the design. Report formats can be customized and sorted according to Device ID, part number, description, manufacturer, or model number. Lists are also supplied in CSV format for use in spreadsheet programs. Supported reports include: Bill of Materials Parts List Purchase Order List Job Costing List Terminal List Terminal Block List PLC List Wire and Device Label

can be viewed and edited textually. Wires connected to terminals can be selected from the connection list and assigned to a cable. Wires and cables can also be assigned to a conduit. A graphical drawing of the terminal block plan can be automatically generated. Standard columns indicate from and to connections for each terminal, device names, wire numbers, cable names, conduits, descriptive text, and more. The format and information shown on the terminal diagrams is configurable. RSWire can also generate a cable list that includes each cable, its source and destination, and the number of conductors used and unused.

To generate wiring diagrams, the user creates the various schematic diagrams in a RSWire project, along with the automatically generated master parts list and connection list. When the Wire Diagram-Layout function is executed, the software prompts the user with a wiring diagram symbol for each device. To place, select a position on the wiring diagram drawing for each symbol. The same Device IDs used in the schematics are automatically assigned to each wire diagram symbol. Once the layout is finished, the RSWire Wire Diagram-Execute function adds connection information from the connection list at the correct position in the wiring diagram. Connection information can include connection type, installation/location/ Device IDs of connected devices, wire numbers, colors, and gauges.

RSWire Designer Wiring Lists and Label Option (9371-EWLI3)

The Wiring List option automatically generates from-to wiring lists directly from the schematic design. In addition, field wiring lists and wire label data can be output to a report. The format of wire labels is user-configurable. A delivered format is compatible with Bradey wire labeling machines. Many label software packages can input RSWire text file of wire labels.

RSWire Designer Symbol Catalogs

In addition to the JIC (or IEC) symbol and Allen-Bradley PLC symbol catalogs provided with RSWire Designer, additional RSWire symbol catalogs are available for the following disciplines and standards: Hydraulic Symbol Library (9371-EHYD3) Pneumatic Symbol Library (9371-EPNE3) ISA Process Control Symbol Library (9371-EPCO3) IEC Symbol Library (9371-EIEC3) JIC to IEC Conversion (9371-EJTI3) Raise to RSWire Interface (ABECAD database to RSWire database) with ABECAD (Included) RSWire DWG file renaming utility (Included) Hoffman enclosure interface (Hoffman database included)
