DUAL CHAMBER ORIFICE FITTING

SPECIAL FEATURES
ORIFICE PLATE SEALING UNITS give positive seal between orifice plate and
body seats. They are available for a variety of services.
PLATE CARRIER protects orifice plate at all times while inserting or removing
from fitting.
INDICATOR PLATE clearly shows the position of the valve within the fitting.
TEFLON SHAFT PACKING AND CENTERING RINGS are standard equipment
on all Precision Dual Chamber fittings in all sizes and ratings.
FITTINGS up to and including 12 line size can operate in a vertical up flow
condition or positioned in horizontal flow for side opening.
COMPACT DESIGN requires minimum operating space.
ALL DUAL CHAMBER ORIFICE FITTINGS are designed and manufactured to
meet latest ANSI/API/AGA recommendations, and in strict accordance with the
latest A.S.T.M. specifications.

SPECIAL FEATURES
Precision Method of Aligning Meter Tube Flange
to Orifice Fitting Flange
METER TUBE FLANGE FITTING FLANGE

Class 125-thru 300

On all sizes, ANSI Class 300 or under,

three dowel pin flange-alignment holes
are drilled in the flanges.
Class 600 or higher, flanges are
manufactured with close-tolerance, squareshouldered, large male flange-facing on
fitting and large female flange-facing on
meter tube to assure proper internal
alignment. Flange gaskets are precisioncut so that under compression they will
not extend into internal bore of fitting.
Refer to engineering drawing.

Class 600 and higher

In Precision Dual Chamber Orifice Fittings, the valve seat is a part of the upper chamber. The
valve strip moves underneath this seat, thus utilizing line pressure to effect a positive seal.
The valve strip is maintained in "floating" position by minimum spring pressure. Before the
slide valve is opened, it is lubricated through the grease gun. Pressure is then equalized
throughout the entire fitting by operation of the equalizer valve. Equalized pressure on both
sides of the valve strip allows slide valve to move freely without wear. Valve seat and valve
strip are ground for tight shut-off and are easily removable for grinding if required.

INSTALLATION OPERATION MAINTENANCE

INSTALLATION
A. Clear all foreign matter, such as dirt, or scale from fitting surfaces,
connections, and open cavities that may have collected between
shipment, storage, or delivery. Weld fitting in the line, and/or use
flange gaskets and install orifice fitting. Determine flow direction
by cast arrow on fitting body.
B. Install Bleed Valve (P/N 10B) and Grease Gun (P/N 23) to
threaded connections provided on fitting. (Note: these may be
already installed at factory.)
C. Orifice Fittings are shipped with slide valve closed. Locate
(separately) Slide Valve Indicator Plate (P/N 5A) and Slide
Valve Indicator Pointer (P/N 5B) and position indicator plate on

Slide Valve Shaft (P/N 5), with the word OPEN at 12 oclock
position. Tighten the set screw to fix the plate onto the shaft. Use
two drive screws to attach the indicator pointer onto fitting body.
See illustration below. See that pointer is directed to the word
OPEN on the plate.
D. Orifice plate is packaged and shipped separate from fitting. The
Plate Carrier (P/N 8Dm) is installed inside of the fitting.
E. After installation, remove the drain plugs and check for foreign
matter that may have collected in fitting cavities. Install fullopening blow down valves in lower camber to clear chamber of
collected sediment.

CAUTION
Precision, Dual Chamber Orifice Fittings are operated under pressurized line conditions. Proper precautions
must be exercised to protect personnel. Always follow OPERATING instructions and avoid placing any part
of the body in front of the top opening when the clamping bar is removed.

LUBRICATION:

Use Precision Flow Slide Valve Lubricant in Dual Chamber Fitting Grease Gun (P/N 23). Lubricant should be applied
only when Slide Valve (P/N 5) and Equalizer Valve (P/N 1), are CLOSED and with Bleeder Valve (P/N 10B); OPENED to atmosphere
(depressurizing upper chamber constantly).

MAINTENANCE
The dual chamber should be maintained regularly to provide extended length of service and measurement accuracy.
Recommended maintenance instructions are:
1. Each orifice fitting should be operated monthly. The slide valve
should be lubricated through the grease gun and then opened
and closed several times.

3. If plate inspection is not required, shafts should be rotated anyway.

4. Pigging of tubes in line may be sometimes required. The dual
chamber fitting can be supplied with ring to prevent dirt and debris
from being forced into the plate carrier cavity.

2. If blow downs to clear lower chamber of accumulations are

performed (See E above), avoid blow down with plate carrier in
lower chamber. Move plate carrier into upper chamber prior to
blow down.

5. Blow down operation should be repeated after pigging the line.

PRECERT ALIGNMENT RINGS

Bring your existing fitting to the revised API/AGA 14.3, 2000 Ed. with the PRECISION PRECERT & Seal Ring

Have no Beta Restrictions

Interchangeability of plates & plate carriers
Fits most all single & dual chamber Orifice
Accepts Standard 500 Series Universal Orifice Plates
2-Piece S.S. PRECERT ALIGNMENT RINGS that easily snap into seal ring
Allows field replacement without special tools
Requires no special assembly for alignment

Precision Flow, Inc. would like to present our Patented Solution to the current API 14.3 recess and protrusion
limitations. AGA Report #3* along with Southwest Research Studies, show that it is not necessary to narrow the seat
gap width to achieve compliance. We have chosen to leave the standard .688 seat width dimension as it is! In doing
this, we have developed the PRECERT ALIGNMENT RING System. These rings, once installed in either a dual
chamber or single chamber fitting; produce a smooth transition from tube I.D. to plate face! If your particular model
of fitting meets other tighter guidelines, such as tap hole spacing, I.D. finish, eccentricity, etc., the introduction of
these PRECERT RINGS could allow your existing fitting to meet these new guidelines!
ECCENTRICITY
The orifice plate bore must be concentric with both the upstream and downstream inside wall of the orifice plate
holder. The orifice plate bore eccentricity, as measured parallel to the axis of the pressure taps.
RECESSES & PROTRUSIONS
The orifice plate gasket or sealing device tolerances and restrictions shall apply at locations immediately upstream
and downstream of the orifice plate face. Protrusions resulting from an orifice plate gasket or sealing device that
extend into the pipe bore are not permitted. A recess resulting from an orifice plate gasket or sealing device, of
0.25 inch or less in length, as measured parallel to the pipe axis, does not require recess depth restriction, diameter
ratio (r) limitation, or additional uncertainty. A recess resulting from an orifice plate gasket or sealing device
of more than 0.25 inch but less than or equal to 0.5 inch in length, does not require diameter ratio (r) limitation
or additional uncertainly if the depth of the recess is within the limitations of 2.5.1.3 tolerances and restrictions section
of A.G.A.
TAP HOLE SPACING
Meter tubes using flange taps shall have the center of the upstream pressure tap hole placed 1 inch from the
upstream face of the orifice plate. The center of the down stream pressure tap hole shall be 1 inch from the downstream
face of the orifice plate. If the pressure tap holes are located by measuring from the bearing face of a flange, allowance
must be made for the gasket or plate holding device used. Each tap hole shall be located at the 1-inch dimension
within the tolerances is recommended that a maximum diameter ratio (r) of 0.75 be used in the design of new
installations.
SEAL RING TEST / TAP HOLE COMMUNICATIONS
In orifice fittings there is the possibility that some fluid may bypass the orifice plate. Tests shall be conducted after
the meter run has been pressure tested in accordance with the relevant code to ensure the following:
A. No differential pressure tap communication or leakage exists.
B. No holding or sealing device fluid bypass exists.
TUBE CONDITIONS
The internal surface roughness of the meter tube should be measured at approximately the same axial locations as
those used to determine and verify the meter tube internal diameter. A minimum of four roughness measurements
shall be made. The mean (arithmetic average) of these four or more roughness measurements is defined as the
meter tube internal surface roughness. The mean meter tube internal surface roughness may not exceed the following
specifications if the uncertainty values of part I are to be met:
A. 300 micro inches R if the diameter ratios (r) are less than 0.6.
B. 250 micro inches R if the diameter ratios (r) are greater or Equal to 0.6
