Assuming the 4 MHz bandwidth, the open circuited noise voltage for a 75 Ohm resistor is: en = - 4 X 75 X 4 X 40 X 1016 en = - 4.87 X 1012 en = 2.2 microvolts RMS If this source were then connected to a 75 Ohm load (which had no noise in itself) it would deliver half the voltage to the load. Therefore, the noise input in 75 Ohms would be 1.1 microvolts RMS or 59 dBmV. This is the basic noise level, thermal noise or the minimum noise that will exist in any part of a 75 Ohm system. To avoid snowy pictures, the signal, at any point in a system must be strong enough to override the noise. This relationship is expressed by the term Signal to Noise Ratio, which is the difference between the signal level and the noise level, both of which are measured at the same point in the system. (2) TV Signal Level This is the amount of signal which is received at the input of any amplifying device and is expressed in dBmV. (3) Noise Added By an Amplifying Device Any amplifier such as a TV set, preamplifier or distribution amplifier always adds more noise than the thermal noise. The amount of noise an amplifying device adds above thermal noise is specified as NOISE FIGURE (N.F.) of that device. When a manufacturer specifies the N.F. of an amplifier is 8 dB, it means the amplifier adds 8 dB more noise to the thermal noise present at its input. The Noise Figure of an amplifier or system is the difference between the measured output noise level (in dBmV) with a terminated input and the thermal noise (59 dBmV) plus the gain (in dB) of the amplifier. Consider, for example, an amplifier with a known gain of 43 dB. The measured noise output, with the input terminated, is 9 dBmV. The noise figure is then found to be: 59 dBmV minus 9 dBmV plus 43 dB = 7 dB N.F. Using the chart in Fig. 1 and the example drawing in Fig. 2, we can simplify S/N Ratio calculations in a step by step procedure. Step 1 Calculate the input signal levels to each amplifying device, as shown in the drawing. Step 2 Add the noise figure of the preamplifier to 59 dBmV thermal noise. 59 dBmV thermal noise + 8 dB N.F. 51 dBmV noise level Step 2A Find the ratio of the signal level to the noise level. 51 dBmV noise level + 0 dBmV input signal level 51 dB S/N Ratio

Step 3A Write the Signal to Noise Ratio next to the output of the converter. Step 4 Calculate the Signal to Noise Ratio at the last active device, the amplifier: 59 dBmV thermal noise +13 dB noise figure 46 dBmV noise level +22 dBmV input signal level 68 dB S/N Ratio Step 4A Write the Signal to Noise Ratio next to the output of the amplifier. Step 5 Subtract the Signal to Noise Ratio of Step #2A from the Signal to Noise Ratio of Step #3: 58 dB Step #3 S/N Ratio 51 dB Step #2A S/N Ratio 7 dB Difference Step 5A Refer to 7.0 dB difference on the chart in Fig. 1 and subtract 0.79 dB from the worst S/N Ratio (smallest number) 51 dB 0.79 dB = 50.21 dB S/N Ratio which is the S/N Ratio of the first two devices combined. Step 6 Subtract the Signal to Noise Ratio of Step #5A from the signal to Noise Ratio of Step #4: 68.0 dB Step #4 50.21 dB Step #5A 17.79 dB Difference
Step 6A Refer to 17.8 dB difference on the chart in Fig. 1 (page A-10) and subtract 0.07 dB from 50.21 dB = 50.14 dB S/N Ratio which is the S/N Ratio of the final output. Steps 5 and 6 vividly show how little affect succeeding amplifiers have on the S/N Ratio established by the preamplifier as long as the signal is not allowed to drop to a low level. Calculating the S/N Ratio of the Distribution Plant: Calculating the S/N Ratio of amplifiers that have the same noise figures and have the same input signal levels is relatively simple. The rule is: When identical amplifiers, connected by identical cable lengths whose individual losses equal one amplifiers gain are cascaded, the system noise figure increases 3 dB each time the number of cascaded amplifiers is doubled.

Antenna specifications often show the front-to-back ratio which is A/B. The beam width is defined as shown in the drawing. Multi-element YAGI antennas have a narrow beam width.
Off-Air Antennas The purpose of an antenna is to pick up a signal(s) which a transmitter(s) radiates, by intercepting the emitted RF waves. There are many factors that determine the quality of reception at a given receiving site. Performance Factors Distance to transmitter Height of transmitting antenna Transmitter power Transmitter frequency (TV channel) Type of receiving antenna Height of receiving antenna Terrain between transmitter and receiving antenna (e.g. large buildings) etc. Antenna Characteristics Gain This characteristic indicates the ability of an antenna to pick up signals as compared to a reference antenna (usually a resonating dipole). Bandwidth This indicates over how many channels the antenna works properly. In principle, there are two types of antennas: broadband and single-channel antennas. Impedance Home type antennas are usually designed for 300-Ohm twin lead; many commercial antennas are for 75 Ohm coaxial cable. Pattern Antennas can receive TV signals from various directions; however, the reception is better from certain directions than from others. A polar pattern will show the antenna directivity.
Physical Construction Antennas must withstand all kinds of weather conditions including high winds, severe icing, etc. One has to choose an appropriate type for the particular area. Antenna location and orientation are most important in getting good reception. People often feel that antennas should be mounted where convenient, and once installed should be left in that place. If you are in a very good reception area, you may get by with this procedure. Keep in mind that the signal you will get at any set connected to a distribution system will never be better than the signal received at the antenna. Carefully select the spot where the signals are strongest and yield less snow for a better signal-to-noise ratio. Orienting the antenna properly may help in eliminating ghosts. Check the signal you receive from the antenna with a good color TV set and measure the strength of the signal with a field strength meter. Both picture and sound should be measured. Broadband or Single-Channel Antennas? If all signals come from the same direction, and if, at the same time, no ghost problems are encountered, a broadband antenna may be used. (It is also desirable that all signals received be of approximately the same strength.) However, in large distribution systems, it is advisable to use individual antennas. These individual antennas can be oriented and placed for best reception of the particular channel. In addition, if one antenna fails, only one channel is affected.

Off-Air Antennas General If the signals from A and B were of sufficient level that the headend signal-processing equipment could adequately produce a high quality television signal for distribution, no amplification of the received signal would be necessary. It is recommended that a preamplifier not be used just to boost the signal if a usable, quality signal can be obtained without amplification. However, if the signal level were marginal, then a tower-mounted, single-channel preamplifier, such as that shown below connected to Antenna 2, should be included to compensate for the down lead cable loss. This preamplifier will selectively amplify only one channel, while effectively rejecting others.
Another situation might require preamplification of both Signals A and B. In this case, two antennas would be required and two preamplifiers, one for each signal. Two down lead cables feeding two signal processors in the headend would also be required.

Description The model 5760 cantilever mount consists of a heavy duty square aluminum boom and all clamping hardware required for rear-end mounting of Blonder-Tongue antennas model # 4866, 4867, 4871, 4872 and 4874. Cantilever end-mounting is common since the antennas are usually attached to tower legs rather than to masts. This maximizes signal reception qualities of the antenna by keeping elements clear of support structures. It also eliminates the need for outriggers and masts. Antennas can be mounted horizontally or vertically on a tower leg or mast (1-1/4" to 2-1/2" O.D.) by rotating the mounting plate 90.The cantilever is designed to be mounted parallel to and below the antenna boom. The boom is 11/4" square aluminum tubing (6063-T6), 64-3/8 long. Mounting brackets are #14 gauge (0.074") stainless steel. Shipping weight is 8 lbs., 5 oz. The mount has a wind resistance of 58.2 lbs. (Thrust in lbs. transferred to supporting structure based on 100 mph sustained wind on antenna.) Ordering Information Order No.

What is an Isolator? An isolator is a passive device placed between the input of an amplifier and its first amplifying (active) element to electronically separate the input and this first amplifier. What does an Isolator do? It performs several functions. It reduces signals that are outside its passband helping to prevent them from getting into amplifier. It keeps all signals (such as the local oscillator of an LNB) from getting out through the input of the amplifier. It also provides a good "match" to the input transistor regardless of what is in front of the input. What are the "Trade-offs"? While it provides a good match, it does have some "insertion loss" which adds to the noise figure of the LNB. This added noise figure, however, is offset by the improved match to the feed. What are good points? The isolated products help prevent "out-of-band" interference from overloading the first gain stage of the LNA or LNB. Additionally it reduces the leakage of the Local Oscillator in dual feed or "SimulSat systems helping to prevent interference in the other LNBs.

1) Why does the cable operator need this type of product? The use of this product is to receive satellite signals in C-band that are in a digital format. The reception and processing of digital information require a very stable output frequency from the LNB. A standard LNB can have a stability of +/- 500 kHz. Whereas a PLL LNB has a stability of +/- 12 kHz. That is 41 times more stable than a standard LNB. This insures that no digital information is lost because of excess frequency drift. Some services that would require this accuracy would be digital radio, digital video downlinks, computer data links, and digital (video) compression just to name a few. 2) What is the difference between a phase locked LNB and a Digital Ready LNB? Manufactures have names for their products that can be confusing. Such as digital ready, data grade, data compatible etc. To know for sure if the LNB is a PLL type you must check the specifications for the frequency stability of the local oscillator. If it is a PLL LNB the specifications for frequency stability should be better than +/- 25 kHz or 4.8 ppm (parts per million) Anything higher than these numbers are not PLL but merely a regular commercial grade LNB. 3) Can I use this PLL LNB in the place of my current LNB even if I am not using Digital Compression? Yes, if a customer needs to buy LNBs now, and believes that in the near future he may be receiving a digital signal, he should put on a PLL LNB. They are fully compatible with any signals that are currently on C-band. 4) What if I am currently using LNAs, how can I implement Digital Compression? We now have a PLL downconverter that replaces the existing downconverter, The existing LNA does not need to be replaced, but should be upgraded to a lower noise unit if the old LNA has a noise figure above 50. 5) What does PLL stand for? How else is the LNB frequency stabilized PLL stands for Phase Locked Loop Oscillator. It is an electronic circuit that is constantly monitoring the frequency of the oscillator, and makes any adjustment for frequency drift over time and temperature changes. Standard LNBs use a method called DRO that stands for Dielectric Resonate Oscillator. Both types of oscillators are set up for their frequency at the factory and have no ability to be readjusted in the field for frequency drift over time or temperature changes.

AFC mode is also included, which provides tracking of the LNB frequency drift of the input signal. An ultra-stable phase locked loop demodulator features superior C/N threshold extension. This design delivers excellent picture quality, even under weak signal conditions. The IRD-6185-RS can be set to one of two aural subcarrier modes, including: fixed (6.8 MHz) and variable (5.4 to 8.2 MHz). An external 70 MHz IF loop is provided, which allows T1 filters to be inserted as needed. The IF loop comes with a standard 32 MHz IF bandwidth filter installed (optional filters are external). The IRD-6185-RS is housed in a single height, 1.75" high, rack mountable, steel chassis with a rugged aluminum cover. Front panel design allows front of rack access to the descrambler module, replaceable battery, authorization number, and renewable security (RS) card, without removing the IRD-6185RS from its rack mounting. LNB power is multiplexed on the RF input connector, eliminating the need for external power inserters. A full complement of user friendly controls (video polarity, on-screen display, fine tuning, audio and video level) and indicators (signal strength, sync, authorization, and bypass) simplify installation. A wide variety of features required for General Instrument compliancy are also provided, including a ganged audio (stereo L/R and mono) level control, audio mode switch for calibrated factory or variable audio level, and an automatic resetting thermal breaker for the LNB power.

Description
The 6350 television modulator generates a high quality vestigial sideband TV signal. Advanced circuit design results in unequaled picture and sound fidelity from color or black and white video inputs and from either baseband audio or 4.5 MHz subcarrier inputs. The SAW filter provides superior adjacent channel performance while retaining excellent group delay characteristics. Vestigial sideband filter adjustments are virtually eliminated and temperature stability is excellent. A delay predistortion network is provided to conform with the standard FCC predistortion requirements. Most of the modulator circuits including power supply are contained in solid-state plug-in modules, easily accessible from the front panel. Some of the modules are interchangeable with those of the 6150 signal processor and 6250 television demodulator, thereby reducing spare inventory requirements.

The encoder utilizes the dBx noise reduction system on both the stereo difference and SAP channels as required by the BTSC standard. All major controls and indicators are located on the front panel of the encoder to facilitate easy set-up and monitoring. Factory preset levels for critical subcarrier modulation eliminate field setup errors. A built-in calibration test tone allows simple setup of the deviation of the television modulator. The compact 1.75 inch chassis makes it easier to integrate the encoder into space-restricted systems. The 6380A encoder offers a complete selection of BTSC outputs to accommodate any modulator. The BTSC baseband audio output is standard as well as a 4.5 MHz modulated audio subcarriers for microwave system feeds, modulator IF inputs, and for older modulators not designed for wideband BTSC audio input. Dual switch selectable stereo inputs are standard. They allow the encoder to accept secondary stereo signals without the need for external switching equipment.

Features Convenient modular design Peak limiter circuitry Dual stereo inputs Front panel "sliding bar" audio display Front panel controls Description The Model ISE integrated stereo encoder module utilizes the same modular concept as Scientific-Atlanta's traditional headend equipment. The encoder module is an easy field installation in a 6350 CCIR-M (NTSC) television modulator chassis. All the necessary audio connections are available on the rear of the modulator chassis. The encoder module provides a BTSC stereo output at 41.25 MHz that interfaces directly to the IF circuits of the television modulator. This allows the carrier deviation to be factory calibrated and simplifies setup. The encoder module utilizes the dbx noise reduction system as required by the BTSC standard. When used with a variety of audio source material, the peak limiter circuit maintains the audio at a consistent level. Features Modular design provides slide-in convenience Space savings in headend Calibration tone for modulator setup Peak limiter maintains consistent levels Dual stereo input switching for alternate programming Description The Model 6390 BTSC stereo encoding system utilizes the same modular design of Scientific-Atlanta's traditional headend equipment. The 3.5 inch rack-mounted chassis provides for the addition of stereo encoders (one to four) and optional Second Audio Program (SAP) modules (one or two) by simply sliding in the appropriate units. Each stereo channel provides a BTSC stereo output at 41.25 MHz, 4.5 MHz and baseband. These output selections ensure headend compatibility with all television modulators. Convenient wiring arrangements allow an encoder to be "pulled" from the chassis without disconnecting any headend wiring. Secondary audio services, such as bilingual programs, can easily be added by inserting a SAP module. Since the signal from the SAP module is combined internally with the output of the encoder module, additional wiring connections are not required.

Features Fully modular BTSC stereo compatible Low power consumption Convertor modules for all standard channels +60 dBmV output Description The Model 6150 signal processor features modular construction, advanced processor technology and reliability. Spurious outputs from the processor are virtually eliminated from 5 to 550 MHz through the use of double balanced mixers and hybrid amplifiers. Double notches at each of the nearest adjacent channel carriers (upper adjacent picture carrier) lower adjacent sound carrier, and lower adjacent color subcarrier, increase adjacent channel rejection to at least 60 dB. An all-pass phase equalizer in the video IF amplifier holds group delay to a minimum. The standby carrier oscillator has two modes of operation: an unmodulated carrier (CW) or it may be modulated from an external source. The external mode greatly facilitates emergency audio override for community alert requirements. Most circuits of the processor are contained in solid-state plugin modules, easily accessible from the front panel. Some modules can be used in the Model 6250 television demodulator and Model 6350 television modulator, thereby reducing spare inventory requirements. 6150-ED-# contains the following equipment 6150-BC .............. basic chassis with power transformer 6150-PS ................ power supply module 6150-SA................ video AGC and sound IF module 6150-SC................ standby carrier 6150-IFF .............. High-Level IF Switching - Option HIFS provides a method of switching an external IF signal directly into the output converter instead of having the standby carrier inserted. The standby carrier module with the carrier oscillator function disabled furnishes the control voltage to a solid-state switch to transfer to the external IF input. This transfer takes place when the input signal leaves the air. Transfer can also be externally activated through a terminal strip on the rear panel.
IF Automatic Gain Control - With IFAGC installed, amplification and automatic gain control of an external high level IF input is provided. This option is used with the HIFS option.

SAIP-60-MF, +60 dBmV, Mainframe. The SAIP Series takes a single channel in the 50 to 806 MHz frequency range and converts it to any channel in the 54 to 758 MHz frequency range. All models feature rock solid, synthesized frequency control with a typing increment of 250 kHz (input channels) and 12.5 kHz (output channels). Input channel frequency selection is accomplished via front panel DIP switches. A channel listing chart is conveniently attached to the inside of the DIP switch cover. True vestigial sideband SAW filtering guarantees superior broadcast picture quality. Two SAW filters are used to ensure proper adjacent channel rejection. Delayed AGC circuitry automatically compensates for input signal variations. These processors have an external IF loop, which allows interfacing with video all-call and signal scrambling systems. The SAIP Series utilizes a standby carrier oscillator to provide a blank picture when the input level drops below a usable level. This prevents a snowy picture from being delivered to the distribution network in the event of signal degradation or complete loss of picture. These processors provide extremely clean output signals with distortion products (-60 dB or better). An exceptionally low broadband noise floor (-95 dB or better) makes the SAIP Series ideal for large, multiple channel headends without the need for additional filtering. The SAIP Series products are housed in a single height, 1.75 high, rack mountable, aluminum chassis. An easily removable aluminum case houses the output filter module, permitting on-the-fly channel changes. The units have a complete set of level controls, including: aural trap depth and RF output. All controls are located on the front panel for ease of operation.
Description The SAIP Series includes professional quality, agile input, channelized agile output heterodyne processors. These units convert any channel in the 50 to 806 MHz frequency range to any channel in the 54 to 758 MHz frequency range. The SAIP Series is ideal for moving an off-air channel (VHF or UHF) or any single channel source to any unused channel (broadcast or CATV, including HRC and IRC assignments) in the system. Agile input and channelized agile output channel selection permits on-the-fly channel changes and reduces the need for large inventories of channelized products. A low cost, removable single channel out-put filter module is used to provide channelized configuration of the SAIP Series. Customer requests for individual channels can be easily accomplished by combining the frequency agile mainframe with the desired removable output filter module. Four models are available, including: SAIP-40-750, +40 dBmV, 54-758 MHz; SAIP-40-MF, + 40 dBmV, Mainframe; SAIP-60-750, +60 dBmV, 54-758 MHz; and

The 6250 television demodulator provides precision demodulation of any standard VHF, UHF, sublow, midband or superband television channel. Outputs are baseband, video, audio and an aural subcarrier. Video delay characteristics match those of the average home television receiver as defined by the FCC, thereby permitting demodulation of signals transmitted with standard group delay predistortion. Audio output is a very high quality balanced line for use by subsequent amplifiers. In addition, a front-panel audio monitor jack with level control is furnished. In applications such as microwave retransmission of the received television signal, an aural subcarrier can be added to the video output. The sound signal will then be at a frequency above the spectrum occupied by the video signal. Envelope detection is used in the standard version of the demodulator. An optional synchronous detector is available to essentially eliminate the quadrature distortion found in all vestigial sideband envelope detectors. Unsymmetrical ringing and smear as well as crosstalk between video sideband components are removed from the resultant demodulated signal. Most of the demodulator circuits, including power supply, are contained in easily accessible solid-state plug-in modules. Some are interchangeable with those of the 6150 signal processor and 6350 television modulator, thereby reducing spare inventory requirements. Specifications RF
