Forth Task Reflection

In education, the role of teachers normally facilitates pupils learning, often in schools. Besides that, teachers are managers. This is the teachers first and most challenging role. Classroom management is probably the most common cause for a first year teacher becoming frustrated and turning to a new field of endeavour. It is also accounts for second, third and fourth-year teachers leaving education. Classroom management is perhaps the least significant role of the teacher but it is the role that allows teachers to teach. Being a manager stinks, but it is necessary to survive as a teacher. In SKS2A, the role of teachers is facilitates pupils in the class. According to Puan Salwana Binti Abdullah, the head of English panel, as for the management of ESL classroom, teachers role varies depending on which class she enters. The school has streaming classes for the Year 4 to Year 6, and mixed abilities classes for Year 1 to Year 3. For the mixed abilities classes, the role is more to feeding the pupils. Even the respond from the pupils are aggressive but the teachers will give out the correct respond to ensure the teaching and learning process effective. Sometimes, the teachers role plays as a facilitator to an advanced stream classes. Most of the pupils in these classes are well prepared in class and they understand well on the lesson. But not all conditions are the same. It might change sometimes. For example, the pupils from the weak classes require the

teacher to feed them because they are slow learners and need attention more compared to the advance classes. For English language studies in the school, the teachers and pupils mostly speak English during class. This is because the pupils level of English is good as some of them speak English at home with their parents. The instructional language

used for advanced classes is 100% English as the pupils are good in the subject. But for the weak classes, they use 70% English and 30% Malay and the teaching is done in a slower pace to assist the pupils understanding the lesson that is taught to them. This percentage will be changed accordingly once the progression in the level of English knowledge of the pupils improved. The blackboard is a symbolical of schools. All classrooms are provided with a blackboard. There can be few teachers who had not used one at some times or other. It is so common. The usage of blackboard is still valid especially in the Year 4 to Year 6 classes but the element of ICT which is the PowerPoint and teaching aids are used in the class. Even some saying says during these days of technologies, the blackboard is way outdated, however, as I can see, it is still relevant and assists a lot in teaching and learning. Some of the teachers use the blackboard 100% depending on the topic. Normally for reading classes and writing classes, the blackboard is used almost all the time during the class. As for the remedial and enrichment programme, drill exercises will be given to the pupils. Sometimes they are divided into groups or pairs to ensure all pupils participate in this remedial and enrichment activities. Besides that, different worksheets are given according to their streams. From these exercises, the format is multi tasking. It is the pupils understanding and participation that are evaluated to see on their understanding on the subject. Not to forget the English Corner or the bulletin board behind the class which are updated every 2-3 weeks are part of the enrichment where everything regarding the English lesson are on the bulletin board for the pupils to share information in English lesson.

As for my observation for this, the purpose for remedial and enrichment programmes is to help pupils overcome gaps and errors in their English language study, besides making pupils notice their mistakes or errors and discover for themselves what is wrong and right. By having this activity, it may help the pupils to reactivate, consolidate and clarify previously presented language items and also to monitor the pupils error and mistakes.
