AseriesofparticipatoryonlineandfacetofaceparticipatorysessionswereorganizedbythePlanet2025Network incooperationwithpartnersandadvisersaspartofanongoinginternationallearninginitiative.Beginningin2006 collaborativelearningtools(referredthroughout,astheImplicationsWheelorIWheel)wereemployedto performstrategicexplorationsofacceleratingformal,nonformalandinformallearningopportunitieswithinthe contextoftheUNDecadeofEducationforSustainableDevelopment(UNDESD). Acceleratedlearningpathwaysforsustainabledevelopmentwithininternationalcontextisaboutmeetingthe needsofthepresentgenerationwithoutcompromisingtheabilityoffuturegenerationstomeettheirownneeds. Itconcernslivingwellwithintherealityofoneplanetthroughcooperationandcreatingcapacitytodosothrough knowledgesharing. Itisalsoaninvitationtobeingapartoforganizationsandsystemsofgovernancethatarelivingsystemsin alignmentwithnaturesoalllifewillflourish.Fundamentally,itisaboutbeingresponsibleglobalcitizensco creatingapositive,peacefulandsustainablefuturebychoice.

PATHWAYS TO THE FUTURE


AseriesofkeytrendsanddriversareinevidencethatwillstronglyinfluenceUNDESDactivitiesaroundtheglobe: TheGreatLearningChallengeTheconfluenceoftheneedsto:(i)acquirethecompetenciesthatwill acceleratelearningforsustainabledevelopment;(ii)imagineandactonpositiveimagesofthefuture basedonscenarioworkandsimulations;and(iii)managetheriskstohuman,economic,and environmentalsecuritythatareaveryformidableeducationalchallengefacinghumanitytoday educationsystemsneedtobetransformedtoberelevant. EmergingtechnologiesThenextfiveyearswillseethematuringofanumberoftechnologiesranging fromsocialnetworks,andmobilephonestomassivemultiplayereducationalgamingthatwilleffectively wiretheplanetandenablepeople,organizationsandnationstosuccessfullytacklethetransitiontoa sustainablefuture. Participatoryculturedemandsasetofnewliteraciesinvolvingsocialskills,developedthrough collaborationandnetworking,aswellasculturalcompetencies,toensurelifelonglearnersbecomefull participantsofsocietythroughamoresystematicapproachtomediaeducation. Collectiveintelligenceapproachesmakeitpossibletoorganizegroupsandbusinessesinverynewways, conductscience,rungovernments,andhelpsolvetheproblemswefaceassocietyandasaplanet. Systemsthinkingmainstreamedinalleducationalcurriculawillshareknowledgeandraiseconsciousness aboutallthingsconnectedandthesmallcatalyticeventsthatcancauselargechangesincomplex systems.Itexplainsadecisionwindowandopportunityforaresponsibleglobalcitizensmovementto precipitateconsciousglobalevolutionwhenweseetheworldinnewwaysandlearnfromthefutureasit emerges.Newsocialtechnologiescanhelpbringthisabout. TheexperiencewithaseriesofinitialIWheelsessionscanbesummarizedasfollows: SocialtechnologyTheIWheelisanexampleofasocialtechnologythat(i)requiresanddevelopsthe newliteracyskillsenablingparticipatoryculture(ii)aggregatescollectiveintelligenceandwisdom;and (iii)facilitatesthesharingofknowledgethroughfacetofaceinteractionoronlinecollaboration. Clearbenefitscanbesecuredbymanyorganizationsfromadoptionofthetool.Itsflexibilityofuseis highlyrelevantforexploringUNDESDdirections,activities,andissues.Broadbasedimplementation wouldlikelyacceleratelearningprocesseswithinnationalandinternationalcontext. NeedforlargerscaleeffortUseoftheIWheelhasthusfarprovidedsomewhatinconclusiveresults duetoacombinationoffactorsthataremostlyunrelatedtothepotentialorclaimedbenefitsofthetool. Alargerscaleeffortwithgreaternumberofparticipantswillpavethewayformoreconclusivedirections andinnovationopportunities. StimulatesinnovationTheIWheelexperiencehasinspired(i)confidenceforfacetofaceandonline sessionsfocusingonkeysustainabilityissues;(ii)Planet2025.tvanewvideosocialnetworkingaboutthe challengesandsolutionsofagloballysustainablelifestyle;(iii)apartnershipinitiativetodevelopa sustainabilitysimulationtoolandgame;and(iv)adoptionofthetoolforstrategicexplorationof Planet2025sownactivities.

Aseriesofreflectionsontimeandplaceillustrateajourneyinsearchofwaystoacceleratelearningforamore sustainablesociety.Theseincludepositiveimagesofthefuture,relevanteducationforthechallengesathand, timeliness,socialtechnologies,authenticleadership,individualandorganizationtransformation,increased consciousnessthroughsharingknowledge,newgovernanceapproachestoengagepeopleinparticipatorydecision making,seriousgamesforsustainability,andvirtualrealityofnewsocietiesthataremodelsforthefuture.

EmbracetheremainderoftheUNDESDasahistoricdecisionwindowforadvancingacceleratedlearningfor sustainabledevelopmentandpositivechange. Alignprogramactivitieswiththerealitiesandassociatedopportunitiescreatedbythekeytrendsand driverssummarizedherein. FindthefuturefasterbyusingsocialtechnologiessuchastheIWheel,TheoryU,TownMeetingsand others,perhapsinblendedformsforcompletelearningexperiences. Developappropriatestrategicactionplanswithmeasurablegoalsandobjectives;evaluatehownew socialtechnologiesusedinprogramactivitiescanleadtobetterandfasterresults;and,incorporateany insightsobtainedfromConnectingtheDots. Cooperatewithcentersofexpertiseorpartnersasnecessaryinthefocalareasofparticipatoryculture, collectiveintelligence,andemergingtechnologiesnationallyandinternationally. Promoteaccessforallwithinandamongnations,includingbymeansofOpenEducationalResourcesand theCreativeCommonslicensingframeworkpromotingthesharingofcreativecontent.

InCollapse:HowSocietieschoosetoFailorSucceedbyJaredDiamond,welearnthattherelativesuccessof humanitysquestforsustainabilitywillmostlikelyhingeonitsabilitytoacquirethenecessarywisdomand foresightfastenoughtomanagechangeandavoidpossiblecollapseofhumancivilizationandlifeasweknowit (Diamond2005).Meetingthesustainabilitychallengenecessitatesbuildingtherequiredcapacityforrapidly emerging21stCenturyhuman,social,organizational,technologicalandcrossculturalcompetencies.Itisthese competenciesthatneedtostrengthenhumanityscollectiveabilitytocopewithimpendingchange;importantly, theymustenableasuccessfultransitiontoasustainablefuture(Wheeler,HesselinkandPretorius2005). Ourmissionistoacceleratelearningprocessesofpeople,organizations,nationsandtheglobalcommunityin pursuitofagloballysustainablelifestyle.Itrequireslearningtospeedupinaraceagainsttime(vanDamand Jansen2006).Thesuccessfulimplementationofinnovativelifelonglearningsolutionsformal(K112,university), nonformal(onthejobtrainingandeducation),andinparticularinformal(TV,radio,phones,games,recreation, andedutainment),isatthecorethisendeavor.Itisalsoamatteroffocus.Considerforexamplethatwhilewe typicallyspend80percentofoureducationalbudgetsonformalandinformallearning,informalwaysoflearning represent80percentofourlearningexperiencesandat20percentofthetotalcost.

Thechallengesofbuildingasustainablefuturearemany,buteverincreasingingenuityandcreativitywillneedto stockagrowingknowledgepoolofinnovativeandpracticalsolutionstoaddressthem.Byimaginingwhatthe futurewillbelikeinthedecadesahead,wecansensewhatactionsmayneedtobetakentodaytorealizeour

goalsandobjectives.ThePlanet2025ScenarioBriefprovidedthebasisforstrategicexplorationsusingtheI Wheel,describedourworldin2025,andbuiltuponfuturescenariosworkofavarietyofsources(Lovink, Planet2025ScenarioBrief:AcceleratedLearningforaGloballySustainableLifestyleConnectingtheDots2006). Theyear2025iswhentodaysyouth1218yearswillbe3238andthemedianageoftheworldpopulationwillbe 32.8years.Thisgenerationwillbeassumingleadershippositionsingovernment,theprivatesector,NGOs, educationalinstitutions,andelsewhere.Sustainabilityforgoodandbadreasonswillbeatthecenterofmuch oftheircareers.Theyear2025alsoprovidesuswithatimeframeofalmost20yearstosetintomotionasuccessful transitiontoasustainablefuture. Indeed,thefutureisnow,butareweready?Arewedoingrelevantthingstopreparenewgenerationsofglobal citizenseverywhereforthechallengesahead?Arewecreatingrewardingopportunitiesalongtheway?Arewe investingenoughinacceleratedlearningforasustainablefuture?Ifsomeoralloftheanswersarenegative,what moreshouldwebedoneorinstead?Byenvisioningthefutureandexploringitsstrategicimplications,itbecomes possibletoaggregatethenecessaryknowledgeandwisdomtococreateasustainablefutureofchoice.Learning forlifeenablesthatchoice.

MANAGING 21 S T CENTURY RISKS ECOSCENARIOS OF THE FUTURE


TheEcologicalFootprinthasbecomeawidelyacceptedinternationalstandardformeasuringandtracking sustainability.Itsuccessfullycommunicatescomplexissuesinastraightforwardmannertoprofessionalsaswellas thepublicatlarge.TheEcologicalFootprintmeasureshumanitysdemandonthebiosphereintermsoftheareaof biologicallyproductivelandandsearequiredtoprovidetheresourcesweuseandtoabsorbourwaste.Humanitys EcologicalFootprintfirstgrewlargerthanglobalbiocapacityinthe1980sandexceededsupplybyabout23percent in2003(GlobalFootprintNetwork2006).ForthreedecadeswehavenowbeendrawingdowntheEarthsbuildup ofecologicalassetsandincreasingtheamountofCO2intheair. Ifwecontinueonourpresenttrajectory,humanitywill demandresourcesatdoubletherateatwhichtheEarthcan generatethem.Mountingecologicaldebtisaproxyforrisk toeconomic,environmentalandhumansecurity.Everlarger portionsofworldGDPwillhavetobeinvestedtooffsetsuch risks(Stern2006).Humanitysultimatechallengeduringthe 21stCenturywillbetofindthenecessarysolutionsthatwill enableittolivepeacefullywithintherealityofthe regenerativecapacityofoneplanet.

ApracticalapproachistosettargetsforasustainableEcologicalFootprintsizeandthenumberofyearstoreach them(Lovink,GoldfingerandWackernagel,EcoInsurance:Riskmanagementforthe21stCenturyTowardsa PolicyFrameworkforaSustainableFuture2004).Basedonthesesimpletargetsecoscenariosofthefuturecan besimulated,whichindicateaccumulatedecologicaldebt,associatedrisk,requiredinvestmentlevels,andother indicatorsrelevantformanaginghumanitysgrowingfootprintaspartofawholesystemapproach.

Initialfacetofacemeetingsandtrainingwouldequipsuchanemergingnetworkwiththeliteracyskills andcollaborativetoolstoexploretheimplicationsofawidevarietyofsustainabilityissuesandchallenges aspartofregularlyheldonlineworkingsessions. Theissuesnetworkwouldaggregateandsharethecollectivewisdomfromexpertsinbusiness, government,civilsociety,academiaandyoutharoundcorethematictrackswithhighpotentialto acceleratelearningforsustainabledevelopment. AsmallnumberofIWheelsessionshaveoccurredonlineorfacetoface.Theexperience,atleastwithin thecontextofexploringacceleratedlearningforagloballysustainablelifestyle,isthereforesomewhat limitedintermsofnumberofparticipantsandassociatedoutput.TheIWheelhassuccessfullybeen usedbynumerousprivatesectorandpublicsectororganizations,includinguniversities,fortopicsof pertinentinteresttotheseorganizations. Onlinesessionswith60participantsfromthroughouttheworlddemonstratedthepossibilityofmounting aninitiativethatpermitspeopleandorganizationstocollaborateinteamsonstrategicissues,their implications,andpossiblesolutions,andtoaggregateandcommunicatetheresults.Theexperienceof collaboratinggloballywithothersoncommonconcernswasperceivedtobeavaluableandpromotes personalchange. Schedulingissues,limitedavailabilityofvolunteerexperttime,andsometimeslimitedcomputerliteracy skillsprovedtobechallengingwithintheonlinecontextfromanorganizationalpointofviewandresulted inrefocusinginitialeffortsonsubsequentfacetofaceIWheelsessions.Solidtechnicalsupportis essentialforsuccessfulonlinesessions.Participantsneedtobewillingtoacquiretheprerequisite competenciestoparticipateonline.
