TECHNICAL INFORMATION SHEET

SkyScape Growing Media

ITEM NUMBER:
Media Bulk (Cubic Yard) W56GARMEDBK Media Super Sak (1.5 Cubic Yard) W56GARMEDSS Media Bag (1 cubic yard) W56GARMED1 Description:
This technical information sheet covers the growing media produced from organic recycled material and inorganic by-products for use as a light weight growing media for hardy long lasting succulent or phytoremediation plants that are beneficial in an eco-roof environment. Whenever possible the growing media will be pre-blended regionally and delivered to the site for application in bulk, 1.5 cubic yard super totes or at a minimum in 1 cu ft media bag. One of the most important components of the growing Media is the biological decomposition of organic material, occurring under aerobic conditions, that is typically characterized by a high temperature phase that sanitizes the product and allows a high rate of decomposition, followed by a lower-temperature stabilization period. Eco-roof growing medias are best when the carbon to nitrogen ratio is between 70-1 and 100-1. This minimizes shrinkage while continuing to support new decomposition to sustain plant life

TIS #1903

Physical Characteristics:
The growing Media shall consist of at least three components. The first part shall be an inorganic expanded Media that is consistent with Pumice, Perlite, Volcanic Cinder Rock, or lightweight expanded clay aggregate (70-85% by volume).

The second part shall be consistent with nutrient grade compost that is manufactured from recycled material and is mixed with the other three components by a composter that is enrolled in the United States Compost Councils (USCC) Seal of Testing Assurance (STA)Program (8-12%).

The third part shall be consistent with fiber or organic material that is a clean cellulose product that adds friability to media, filtration, and agronomic horticultural attributes (15-35%).

Lightweight Mix Specifications:

The final mix shall be tested to ensure that the above specifications and the following weight requirements are met. Maximum Acceptable Unit Weights for Growing Media (ASTM E2397-05 Standard Practice for Determination of Dead Loads and Live Loads associated with Green Roofs) A. Fully Saturated Bulk Density B. Field Moisture Capacity C. Received Weight 55 lb/ft 42 lb/ft 28 lb/ft
3

The preferable organic material is a nutrient grade composted material that is a by-product from the bio-digester Green Energy process, Fiber Residuals, that provide excellent carbon for improved media properties and water retention and Organic Material, fo rmed principally from partially decomposed bark, reeds, sedges, marsh grasses and other associated plants. The growing media specified for use in the eco-roof shall meet the testing criteria and (or equivalent) specifications in the table below.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION SHEET

Only compost products that meet all applicable state and federal regulations, Section 07 33 63 (02930) www.federalgreenspec.wbdg.org, pertaining to its production and distribution may be used in this application. Approved compost products must meet related state and federal chemical contaminant (e.g., heavy metals, pesticides, etc.) and pathogen limits pertaining to the source materials in which it is derived.

Definitions:
Saturated Bulk Density An estimate of growing Media and water weight after it has been fully saturated when the water is not allowed to drain. Field Moisture Capacity An estimate of the total growing Media weight after it has been fully saturated and the gravitational water is allowed to drain. Received Weight An estimate of what the media will weight when delivered.
