CardMaker

Today Im thinking of the three Rs from a slightly

different perspective: Reflect, Readjust and Resolve.
As I reflect on the past year, I see many areas of my
life where I have made good strides toward becoming
the woman I believe I was intended to be. Portions of
this growth process have been easy, but other parts of
the journey have been downright painful. Choosing
to do whats right hasnt always meant choosing the
easiest route or option (ie: grabbing fast
food or going home to cook a healthy
dinner), but looking back, I know Im a
better person because of it all.
Throughout this phase of personal
growth Ive had to readjust and
rethink my approach to dealing with
circumstances that come my way and
how I relate to the people in my life. Ive
made adjustments to the way I parent my
children. Ive made adjustments to how
I take care of myself. Ive adjusted how
and where I invest precious minutes and
hours in each day.
Now, as the new year begins, Ill
resolve to be more more loving, more

patient, and more committed to making

the most of the opportunities that come
my way. And Ill commit to making
and sending more cards to the sweet people in my life that share this
amazing journey with me.
Until next time,

And Ill commit

to making and
sending more
cards to the sweet
people in my life
that share this
amazing journey
with me.

I read with interest the comment

from Wanda C. in the September,
2010 issue regarding the problem
with mailing bulky cards with embellishments on them. This problem can
be quickly overcome by buying some
bubble-lined disc envelopes at the
stationary store and inserting the card
for mailing. These envelopes come in
a range of sizes and although additional postage will likely be required,
I have sent cards to friends and family
in these cushioned envelopesand they
have all been received with no damage. After all the work and thought
that goes into making a special card
for somebody, its reassuring to know
that it will arrive intact.
Keep up the great work in producing such a wonderful magazine for us
card makers.
Patricia B.
Edmonton, AB, Canada

Yes Wanda, there are issues when

mailing our wonderful handmade

cards. I have been mailing them with

success for 5 years now and have the
following tips:
1. I have strips of tissue paper
(about 4 inches wide) that I mummy
wrap around the cards before putting
them into the envelope.
2. At the recommendation of the
postal clerk, I also use clear packing
tape and put a strip of it on the
outside of the envelope over the area
of the bump caused by the ribbon,
brad, etc. This keeps it from tearing
in the stamping machine.
3. If there is any thickness, I add a
17-cent stamp along with the regular
postage.
4. When they are oversized, I
automatically use two regular stamps.
Hope this helps!
Shelah H.
Via e-mail

I have a solution to mailing cards

with bumpy embellishments. I save all
the packing material from products
that I purchase. It is lightweight and
easily fits in the envelope. I just cut a
piece the size of the card and slide it
into the envelope. I also put the bump
as far away from the stamp as possible.
Please remind your readers that square
cards always require extra postage.
These tricks have worked for me.

Sew Easy Stitch Piercer

Manufactured by We R Memory Keepers

I love adding stitched details to handmade cards.

However, I dont love pulling out a sewing machine
to add them. The rotary stitch piercer from We R
Memory Keepers makes creating perfectly stitched
designs easy and is so much simpler to use than a
sewing machine! Simply roll the stitch piercer across
your paper to create a row of evenly-spaced holes that
you then stitch through. The stitch piercer even comes
with a free needle. There are additional stitch piercing
attachments available in different stitching patterns
such as cross-stitch, zigzag, blanket and scallop.
Stitching floss in various colors is also available.

Bring a touch of French flair to your valentine cards

this year with the Je tAdore Collection from Making

heart doilies and polka dots bring to mind vintage
Parisian style as do the embellishments such as
vintage tickets, brads, stickers and glitter shapes. My
favorite item in the collection is the rose ribbonsoft
delicate fabric flowers floating along a length of tulle
would be so pretty along the edge of a card. As a fun
packaging idea, Making Memories has also created
a heart-shaped embellishment box. Fashioned like a

include gems, decorative trims, flowers and buttons,
are nestled inside candy liners.

stamping party and was instantly hooked. I worked
for a direct sales company for many years before
deciding to take the leap into designing my own
stamp line.It wasnt always easy tofindthe kinds
of stamp imagesthat I was looking for, so I started
drawing my own images instead. After much
prompting from family and friends to turn those
images into rubberstamps, the Gina K. Designs
stamp line became a reality.
How did you select your amazing team of
designers and illustrators?
My design teamis chosen from customers who
expressed a true love for Gina K. Designs stamps.
Myillustrators come from many different areas
theysend samples of their work and when the images
and ideas click, we come together. I work with a
group of exclusive artists and somefromwhomI
purchase art now and then.

Tell us a little more about StampTV and what

inspired you to start it.
Recalling what it felt like to be a newbie
stamper and paper crafter, I realized thatwatching
someone createprojects and do techniques was
one of the easiest ways to learn. I decided that
I wanted to offer this type of free education
in a more professional way than was being
offered at the time. We madeaconsiderable
investmentin broadcast-quality cameras, a studio,
lightingandstudio editing system and went to
work to create StampTV. It caught on very quickly
and nowattracts up to 90,000 hits a day and
has about15,000 registered members. Although
registration on the site is not required to enjoy
StampTVsvariety of qualitycontent, registration
doesbring someperks.
What makes Gina K. Designs unique among
other stamp companies?
Aside from our beautiful images and top-of-theline card stock, Gina K. Designs was one of the
first companies to support our products with lots of
education, blog tutorials and videos.
What are some of your favorite stamping
techniques?
Wow, that is a hard question for me since I never
met a technique I didnt love. One technique I have
been enjoying lately is emboss resist. Inking over
the embossed image and then watching the image
emerge never fails to bring a smile to my face.

What are your top five stamping supply

essentials?
Nestabilities, Cuttlebug folders, Scor-Pal,Tim

tips & techniques Purchased notecards are a fast and easy way

to jump-start a quick card design.

Blank Notecards
B y K imber M cG ray

Have you seen the pretty blank notecards that are

available at the craft store or in the stationery aisle?
While its a great idea to have blank cards on hand
ready for any occasion, the inner crafter in you may
want to jazz them and make them more personal.
Add a pre-made sticker embellishment and a quick
stamped sentiment and in a matter of minutes youve
gone from a simple note to a special card that will
make your loved one smile.
Start with a set of cards that have a variety of
pre-printed patterns suitable for anything from a
masculine thank you card to a feminine birthday card
or even a simple thinking of you card. The boxed set
of cards I selected to work with has a different print
on both the front and the back of the cards so the
possibilities were numerous within this one box.
Gather some coordinating papers and keep them
with the card blanks. This particular set of cards
has matching papers available at the craft store. The
sheets of paper came in 12 x 12-inch
sheets so I cut them down to 6 x
6-inch pieces so I could
easily keep them
together. Since the
card blanks are a
standard A2 size (41/4
x 51/2-inch) a 6 x 6-inch
paper is a perfect starting
point for the cards.
If you have a box of scrap
patterned papers in your
craft supplies, dig through
them and gather some that
coordinate with your note
cards. Youll be surprised at what
papers you may already have that
will be a nice added touch to a card.
Keep some basic stamp sentiments

24

CardMaker ja n ua ry 20 11

such as Thank You, Happy Birthday, Get Well Soon,

Thinking of You, Congratulations and a simple Hi on
hand to incorporate into your design. Finally, gather
some card-making basics such as adhesive, a black ink
pad, simple embellishments and neutral ribbon. All
of these items can work on any card. Theres no need
to have tons of options in these departmentsunless
you want to, of course. I tend to reach for my white
ribbon, tan twine and black ink pad more than
anything else.
An added bonus would be a sheet of coordinated
pre-made embellishments. The set of cards I used
also had some wonderful 3-dimensional chipboard
embellishments; youll see that these embellishments
can add a lot of impact with very little effort.
Sometimes it doesnt hurt to have that ace in your
pocket when you really want your recipient to think
you went the extra mile with your card creation.
Your secret is safe with me if you use this shortcut to
jump-start your designs.

Thank You
Sticking with a specific set of colors and limiting
the use of embellishments gives this card a versatile
design that could be used for anyone to whom you
want to send a thank you card.

As each New Year presents itself, one of the most common

goals in America is to get into shape. The start of a new
year also presents the perfect opportunity to give our card
making a little makeover as well.
After making dozens of holiday greeting cards that
all look alike, it is easy to get in a rut and forget to
switch out of the assembly-line mindset. As a card
maker, that shape up idea also makes a great design
resolution. Adding some geometric shape techniques
to your routine will quickly increase creative flexibility
and stamina throughout the coming year. So, grab
some supplies and join us for a workout that will
shape things up in no time.
Every proper exercise program begins with a warmup. Warm up by experimenting with a few simple
geometric embellishments to give cards a boost and
to begin stretching your creativity. Start with a few
small items such as brads, buttons and gems. These
little treasures come in a variety of shapes and sizes as
well as a rainbow of colors. Just a few tiny accents can
easily dress up any card creation.
While warming up, be sure and check out other
simple yet shape-conscious products that will stretch
your card-making budget as well. Ribbon can be
found with every style and pattern from plain to
polka dot to diamonds. Simple geometric punches
and dies can be layered, resulting in great handmade
yet inexpensive embellishments. They can also be
used to create patterns, borders and accents, or to cut
trendy felt and fabric. Combining a variety of these
embellishments and tools with a common design

theme makes for a low-impact, creative workout that

has a high-impact result.
Every workout also needs some aspect of repetition
to make it truly effective, and your card-making
workout is no different. There are a number of easy
ways to use repetition of papers to get the most
from your efforts as well as to keep your creative
workout going strong. Consider purchasing papers
printed with geometric arrangements of patterns
and colors to incorporate into your designsimply
cut into shapes to add interest. Dont forget that
patterned papers can also be created with rubber
stamps or found as digital files that can be printed
from your home computer. A more basic approach
to this exercise is to simply add a mix or sets of
various papers cut in the same shape. Change up your
workout a bit with a mix of the same shape continued
in a variety of colors.
After a great warm-up with all of those patterns
and embellishments, your creative heart should be
beating strong. Now, its time to round out your
workout by adding a shaped-up card to the mix.
Shaped cards can be created in a wide variety of
ways. A die-cutting machine can be an invaluable
tool for crafting shaped cards. Simply cut and score
a card base that is larger than the selected die image.
Next, lay the card blank on the die, or just under it

shape
up !

depending on the machine type, leaving the folded

portion just inside the cutting area. When the die and
card blank are run through the machine, all but the
folded area will be cut out into the shape of your die.
There are also a variety of easy-to-use templates that
can be used to create a shaped card. Look for them in
both physical form, as well as digital templates that
can be found online, many of which are free.
No shaping equipment? Never underestimate the
resourcefulness of a budget-conscious card maker.

Join us for a fun challenge as we take a closer look at Card

Making Around the House!
I am excited to introduce you to a special feature
that will be unfolding in these pages beginning with
the March 2011 issueCard Making Around the
House! This feature is not about where you create
in your home, but rather about what items you have
at your disposal that can be utilized in your card
creations; items youve already acquired that can be
put to a different use. Discovering the inspiration that
can be drawn from the different areas of your home
is an added benefit to this feature. This exercise in
card making is also a great opportunity to reuse and
recycle items.
This feature will be coming to you in the form of a
designer challenge. The task will be to visit a specific
area in or around your home and use items from that
area to create cards or let them provide inspiration
for choosing other images, patterns and designs to
incorporate. Some areas that we will visit on our
open-house tour will be the garden, clothes closet or
wardrobe, the toolbox, kitchen and home office.
To help you understand our vision and get an idea
for what we have in mind, we have included some
Artist Trading Cards (ATCs) that have been created

62

CardMaker ja n ua ry 20 11

using items from around the house. In case you

are not familiar with ATCs, in short form they are
trading cards much like sports trading cards created
by artists using various mediums.
The ATC shown here was created after a visit to
the garden. The base of this design is white glossy
card stock. The background pattern was created
with an actual leaf from one of my trees. Using a
cosmetic wedge, I
simply applied ink
to the underside
of the leaf where
it is more textured,
and then press the
leaf onto the card
stock. Remember
to begin with the
lightest color of ink in
order to reduce color
contamination of your
ink pads and layer
on additional colors
as desired. Stamp the

greeting at an angle at the top. Ink punched flower

shapes with the same ink as used on the background.
Finish the ATC by attaching flowers in a cluster
shape and accent centers of flowers with rhinestones.
Our next point of
inspiration is the
wardrobe where we
find lace and a button
to use for our design.
The technique
used with the lace
involves applying
double-sided, heatresistant tape to the
card base, followed
by the lace. Next,
apply platinum
embossing
powder, tap off
excess and remove lace. Apply
second color of embossing powder, in this case white,
tap off excess and heat with heat tool. Thread the
button with sheer silver ribbon, tie in a knot and
attach to the die-cut flowers, which were inspired
from flowers on a blouse. To finish, stamp and heatemboss greeting with silver embossing powder.
The next stop
is the garage or
more specifically,
Dads toolbox.
See if you can
determine which
items were used
to create this
sample piece.
If you guessed
drywall tape and
gold wire then you
are correct. The
drywall tape creates
the backdrop for
the rubber-stamped
word Inspire and

the gold wire is wrapped around the inchies1-inch

squares of chipboard, which have been embellished
with printed paper and rubber stamps. To create the
final accent, two black mini brads were attached.
On our walk through the
kitchen, we find
a printed paper
napkin which
works beautifully
for the background
image of the pear
ATC shown here.
A flattened bottle
cap and scrap of
cheesecloth add
dimension. The extra
items used as accents
are sheer ribbon, a
safety pin, a metal letter,
jewelry tag and rubber
stamps.
As we finish up
our Card Making
Around the House
tour, we stop in
the home office. It
should be easy to
identify the items
used in our sample
project: a page
from a dictionary,
gold paper clips
and a colorful
punched piece
from a magazine.
We hope that
you now have a vision of what we
will be exploring in this new feature. Even more, we
hope this helps you see items around your home and
yard with a slightly different perspective and use.
Everything is fair game except for spouses, children
and animals of course, although I am sure even they
provide inspiration!
