Electromagnetic Field Theory

UNIT I

UNIT II
1. State and explain Coloumbs law and deduce the vector form of force equation between the two point charges? (6) 2. Derive the expressions for energy stored and energy density in electrostatic fields? (8) 3. Point Charges 1mC and -2mC are located at (3, 2,-1) and (-1,-1, 4) respectively. Calculate the electric force on a 10nC charge located at (0,3,1) and the electric field intensity at that point. (8) 4. Derive the boundary conditions at the interface of two dielectrics? (10) (or) At the interface separating dielectric 1 and dielectric 2 , show that the tangential component of E is continuous across the boundary , whereas the normal component of E is discontinuous across the boundary. (10) 5. A circular disc of radius a m is charged uniformly with a charge density of s C/m2. Find the electric potential at a point P distant h from the disc surface along the axis. 6. Find the value of capacitance of capacitor consisting of two parallel plates 30cm X 30cm surface area, separated by 5mm in air. What is the total energy stored by the capacitor if the capacitor is charged to a potential difference of 1000V. What is the energy density? (6)

UNIT III

UNIT IV
1. Derive the time-harmonic Maxwells equations in integral form and point form. (16) 2. Discuss the relation between field theory and circuit theory. (8) 3. UNIT V
1. Derive the EM wave equations in frequency domain and obtain the expressions for intrinstic impedance and propagation constants for free space, conductor, and dielectric medium. (16) 2. Explain how the rate of energy transportation by means of EM waves from one point to another point can be obtained from Maxwells equations.(10) (or) Derive the Poynting theorem and give its significance. (12) 3. A lossless transmission line has characteristics impedance of 70 ohm and phase constant of 3 rad/m at 100MHz. Calculate the inductance/meter and capacitance/meter length of the line. (6) 4. Describe briefly about reflection co-efficient and transmission co-efficient. (4) 5. Given that the transmission line is 20kM long. It is fed by a sinusoidal source of 100V having a frequency of 2000Hz. It is terminated by pure resistance of 600 ohms. Find the primary and secondary constants of the line, if the transmission line parameters are R=10ohms, L=1mH/km, G=10S/km, and C=10nF/km. Also compute the sending end and load end currents. (16)
