January-March 1988
Dear Folks,

Fran and I greet you from our work in South Africa.

a great Christmas and holiday season.

We hope that you had as usual. Our yearly

part of a "Colored Church Convention"

in Barkley-West near Kimberley.

There were many missionaries there that we had not seen before. Fran taught flannelgraph lessons each session and I taught a class on Marriage during the weekend. During tiie weekend the missionaries agreed to have yearly get-togethers, mainly for relaxation and refreshment. I volunteered to plan the program for 1988 and we hope to get together in the Transkei in October. We are looking forward
to seeing the other missionaries at that time. All in all the weekend was a lot

of fun and I beleive everybody learned a lot.

Two weeks later, Steve, Fran and I went to Holpan, which is also near Kimberley for a weekend of meetings with the northern cape churches. Jon Hamilton

was also there and preached. Fran taught the women and Steve taught the men. It went real well. This is one of the poorer areas of South Africa, but they are always faithful to the church. It does ^ more good to go there than it does them.

against a 'resident' school and have gone more for an 'extension' type school. Our reason for this is simple. Whereas people coming to a resident school must
leave jobs and family, they do not with this plan. We feel that we will be

training leaders already in the churches, and not people who hope they might get a job in a church. African culture respects age and frowns on a younger man teaching older men. So it sometimes hard for a younger African to get the respect

he needs in teaching merely because of age (and sometimes marriage).

Our plans

call for three sessions this year with the first one being in Kimberley in May:

We hope to have another one in Cape Town in July and a third in November. It will . take students longer to get credits but they can achieve a years' credit of work

' if they stick with the program.

We presented the idea to the brothers at last

Please pray for us in this new venture,

years conference and it was well accepted. that we might be fruitful.

Steve and I went to George in December to perform the funeral of an elder's wife. We took David Jantjies with us so that he could translate for us. While we were there, we had the Mullen family from Bophutatswana visiting us. Larry Mullen preached at Mfuleni while here. Fran will tell you more about their visit as well as my mother, sister and brother-in-law's Christmas visit in her part of
this letter.

We have a real busy year ahead of us, .so please pray for us. We love the work here and feel we are being used of God. Thanks for all of you who are a part of this ministry, through prayers and finances. We could never be here without you. A special thanks to Vern and Barb for all that you do. And also thanks to Clyde and Bonnie Chillicut of Peru Indiana for vidoetaping the '87 World Series for us. We and the U.S. Marines here in Cape Town really enjoyed it. May God
bless you all in 1988.

Pete

Fran's Feelings

Hi Folks! The last few months have really been busy for us. But we are really enjoying ourselves here in S.A.. Our hope and prayers is that this letter finds you
all well, happy and busy about our Lord's work. Pete is just over a bad ear infection. Bless his heart, he was in alot of pain for more than two weeks. He was at the docotor's office three different times. On

his second visit the ear had to be "syringed". It was so painful that he passed out cold. We are glad he is better. I have no complaints, been getting along great. Praise the Lord! From November thru to February we have had a lot of company. As you all probably know, company wears you out, but boy the fun we have had. The Mullen family

from Bophutatswana were here for two weeks and we had a grand visit with them. Now we feel we know them well. They are super pople and hard workers. While they were here we had a lot of laughs, relaxation, beach water and sand (I was one that got attacked
by a wave and have scars to prove it), lots of food, sunburns and work in between. While they were here, Pete had tujofunerals he had to attend. The first one was in the Transkei. He had to be away for the weekend the Mullen's arrived. The second funeral was the week

end while they were here. Pete went to George for the day.
the Mullen family here again, soon 1 hope.

Now we look forward to having

Pete is real good about bringing me a "surprise" when he goes away on trips without me. While Pete was in the Transkei this time I got nothing but Bogey (our cockerspanieDgot two big surprises. Can you believe that? I can see where I rate now..Ha! Bogey got two huge ox bones. The folks at the Transkei were having ox for the meals and Pete saw these two big bones and asked if he could take them home to his wife, I mean dog.
They got a good chuckle and said he was welcome to them. He put them in his suitcase and brought them on the plane. 1 would have laughed if customs would have stopped him. Well, Bogey was thrilled. He got one right away but one was frozen for a Christmas present.
When Boerev has a bone he erow/s if anyone comes near, well with these two ox bones he

551 was in the middle of the yard and if someone came in sight even if it was down the road ' he was already growling. The bones were as big as ffogey. They disappeared on the second

day. We don't know if he managed to burry them or if they were stolen when his back was
turned.

A week after the Mullen's left, Flo, Mark and Lisa were here for ten days.

WC really enjoyed having them here for Christmas. It was the first Laughren Christmas since 1981. We still miss Chester B. In those ten days we hardly stopped. There was a lot to do and many things to see, and a lot to talk about while they were here. Mark and Lisa would like to come back and help us during conference time some year and I hope it will be soon. We could use their help. Flo plans to come again in June, Lord willing. It
always does us good in many ways, to have her here. This year I am helping the different congregations (especially here in the

C^pe) get training, materials and aid in Sunday Schools. They are eager and excit d about
that. Art d what a good bunch of people I have to work with. Also, I am trying to get plans going on having a VBS (we will be calling is HBS - - Holiday Bible School) here at Mfuleni in July. It is the first one for here and my first one to put together. Please pray for me in these things. If you have any VBS materials, or craft things and ideas, I can and will use

any.Craft items of all sorts are not found around here except glue and glitter. I can't even find any construction paper. So if you could help I would appreciate it. The ladies class in Bishop Lavis is going real well. We still meet every Thursday. Now the ladies are learning
to do some teaching on their own. We are taking turns. We all have a copy of a lesson book "Women of the Bible" and are able to study ahead with one of us leading in discussion. It
is going well.

Guess I better close for now. Thanks for your prayers and help in every way. Write when you get a chance. We long to hear from you all. We want to know what

has been going on in your lives too. May God continue to bless you and keep you in his loving
care as you live for him.

Miss you and love you all,

Dear Friends,

I greet you once again from the lovely country of South Africa. This country
is really beautiful..I wish you could see it for yourself.

We were busy as usual in the month of January. I performed a wedding at Mfuleni on the 3rd. The couple who came to be married actually came to church a couple of weeks earlier and wanted to be married right then. So we made

arrangements for the 3rd and did the wedding. A funny thing happened at the wedding. The couple asked David Jantjies how much I charged to do weddings and

the letter.

The work here in Cape Town is going quite well. We have had our first two baptisms from the Two Oceans church recently, and also a couple from Mfuleni. We and the Zimmermans are set up on a three month program for Sundays in that one
of us is at Mfuleni and one is at Bishop Lavis for a period of three months. Right now we are at Mfuleni (until September) and the work there remains strong. My

class at Macassar on Wednesday evenings and Fran's ladies class at Bishop Lavis on Thursdays continue to go well. Please continue to pray for these as well as
our youth group at Macassar.

Our yearly conference, with the theme, 'Living for Christ' is coming up in Upington from September 20 to October 2. Please pray for this. We are looking forward to having two members from my home church in Hampton, Georgia here to help teach during that time. They will be a great asset to the work.

Hi folks!

I am sure you all will be interested in knowing that we got our visas extended for another year. The extensions are usually given on a six month basis, but for some reason ours gets extended for a year. We can't help but think this is God's way of keeping us here. The weekend of the fa;th of August, Steve and Pete were supposed to go to

Port Elizabeth, but due to Kyle's accident, Steve was not able to go, so I went with Pete. We had a good weekend wtih the folks there and we plan to go back (Lord willing) on the third of September to do a wedding. While we were in P.E. they fed us very well. On Sunday they had a big curry meal, strong curry. Sunday night I felt strange things going on in my stomach. When we arrived at home on Monday night, I spent the night in the toilet
with the^back door trots^ For the rest of the week Pete and I spent most of our time in

bed and in the toilet with diarrhea and vomitting. I don't think it was only the curry, I think we also had the touch of flu, because that has been going around and we had colds.
Pete still has a cold, but we are much better now.

This weekend Pete is flying to Upington by himslef, to check on plans for our

conference that is going to be held there in September. We have been very busy with the conference plans and we are looking forward to it. Pete must go alone because Steve is still busy with Kyle in the hospital and I was supposed to have a teacher's meeting tomorrow. The teacher's meeting had to be conceled at the last minute (today) due to a few snags, but 1hope to have one in two weeks time. You never know what will happen around here. On the 18th of August I took three ladies to the bank to open an account for
the church ladies fund. While we were out I treated them with lunch at a nearby Spur.

The Spur resturants are a type of steak house. None of these ladies have been to a Spur

resturant before. They were so excited and had so much fun. They have not stopped talking or bragging about that day. It humbled me when 1thought about how much we take so much for granted and to see their faces of surprise, joy and amazement in such a small thing. I wish you could have been with us to see for yourself. I also wish we were able to do things
like this more often. It has been only in the last year or so that the blacks and coloured people have been able to go to public resturants, it is a new thing to them. This country

is making good improvements which I am sure the people of the USA do not hear about.

The changes have to be gradual and that is something the rest of the world does not under
stand. Please continue to pray for this country, the leaders and the people, and please continue to pray for us as we try to serve God in the best way we know how, while here
in South Africa.

Until the end of time, we wish you good health, happiness, love and God's
blessings as you lilve for Him. Missing you.

October 19QS
Hello Folks!

The time sure is going by fast- Another month has come and gone, again. September was very busy, but we are glad for that and hope God was able to use us in a great way
for His kingdom.

On September 3rd, we were in Port Elizabeth for the weekend doing a wedding. Pste and I enjoyed that time. Of course we were both put to work to do some teaching and visiting, and we had fun at the wedding. We caught a cold again, but we were fine a
week later.

We are pleased to let you know that we had "our" first student to finish a correspondence course. It was a young lady who lives and works in Sea Point. Her name
is Grace Valentine. We took here photo and she was tickled to death. Zimmerman still have several students they are working with by mail.

Pete and Steve Please remember

As you know, we have been getting ready for our annual conference. It was held in Upington, Sept. 28 - Oct. 2. Two elders from Berea Christian Church in Hampton, Georgia (Frank Stanley and Willard Snow) came to South Africa for two weeks to help in the teaching. They arrived on Sept. 21 and went home to America on Oct 4. It was a joy having them here with us. The people enjoyed their preaching and teaching so much they got sick, especially Frank, "the tough guy", Ha! Shame, I really felt sorry for him.
Frank and Willard handled driving on the left hand side very well,
Willard ran up on the side walk. It was an easy mistake. All in

On Sunday, the last day of the conference, we had an early service (6:30 AH) and lunch, then everyone was on their way hope. We took the Cape Town crew to the Augrabies Falls, because it was on their way home. They all, us Included, really enjoyed that. Let me tell you how the folks from Cape Town came- They were driving

October was, as usual, another busy month. Our yearly conference ended on the 2nd, and we drove back to Cape Town on the 3rd. As you probably already know, two elders from my home church in Hampton Georgia, Frank Stanley and WiHard bnow, were here to help with this year's confprencp. It really went well. Because upingren had never been there before. We had over 300 people there this time or another from all locales, and everyone was very satisfied with the way that it went. Dear Friends,

During the months of July,
One of our iiif)sL ptijoyablr experiences

We are fine here and staying healthy.

August and September there were many different events that took place in the work to date in South Africa took place in July wlieti we had five inteins from St. l.ouis Christian College come and help with the work for a couple of weeks. Jon Hamilton of Kimberley and Pal Allen of Joliannesburg brought Stacy Garner, John Garber, Len
Moore, Janine Whited and Amanda Baker here to Cape Town after they had been in Macassar, and took turns preaching at Bishop Lavis,

Johannesburg and Kimberley for over a montli. They were refreshing for Fran and I to have in our house. While they were here, they taught Bible Studies and youth
groups at Bishop Lavis and

Mfuleni and Two Oceans. They brought new ideas and gave inspiration to both us and the local people. Even now, the local people are wontlering when they will come back. We believe that it was a good time of learning for them as I know it
was for us.

Two days after they left, Steve and I started another session of Cape Bible
Seminary, this time at Mfuleni. Because of work conflicts, we cancelled the one
that we had scheduled for a midweek in the first of July and ran it on three suc

September saw the yearly conference come once again. This year it was in Upington, in the northern Cape. Because of Kyle's broken leg and Pal Zimmerman's having to stay home to take care of him and also because of Jon Hamilton being
Singapore for the month of September, we were left a little short handed.

in Hampton, Georgia.

This year He helped in the form of

Willard Snow and Frank Stanley, two elders who came from the Berea Christian Church

here for a total of two weeks. We were in Upington for the week of September 26 through October 2, and while Willard taught a good study on James each morning, Frank preached the opening night sermon and taught on various subjects in the after noons. Meanwhile, Fran taught the ladies classes each morning and afternoon, Steve handled the sessions each day, preached the closing service on Sunday and preached a funeral at the last minute on Saturday Afternoon. One of the most rewarding sessions of the week was the one that Fran and I taught together to the young
brothers and sisters about morality, dating and the like. These classes were well attended and and well recieved. We were really pleased with the success of

conference as we had 300 people at one time or another attend. The theme "Living for Christ" was well developed by all brothers who preached and tau}ht. A little
extra thing that we did this year was sell cassette recordings of the sessions
for Rl.OO apiece and to date we have sold over 100 of them. We thank the Lord

for the success of this year's conference and it'-i encouragement to the people. Fran and I would like to send a special thanks to Frank and Willard for coming so far to conference this year and greatly adding to its success. Thank-you for
encouraging both us and the people here.

October through December see alot of varied activities coming up such as the first V.B.S. here in Cape Town and another session of Cape Bible Seminary. Please continue to pray for us both physically and mentally in the work here that we may
be used of God. Until next time, may God bless. Keep your hands in His.

December 1988

Hello Folkst

Greetings once again fro* South Africa. We hope this letter finds you healthy and starting 1969 well. Deceitber started with an ordination of a local Minister in the town of Ashton. This town is about 100 Miles fro* Cape Town. It is on the other side of the

Mountain (Table Rock) that seperates Cape Town fro the rest of South Africa. We took about 15 people froM the Bishop Lavis Church and they sang a special song to the newly ordained Minister. It was a fun tiMe for these people as they rarely get out of their
township to visit other Christian nationals.

On OeceMber 11th the Sunday School of Bishop Lavis and Hfuleni had their closing prograMs for the year. Fran wrote a short play that the Bishop Lavis children acted out for the prograM. We gave Bibles to all the children who were faithful attenders at
church this year. For soMe of the children this was their first Bible and it is one that they will treasure for a long tlMe. I also did a wedding on the 11th in the township of Nfuleni. The Zionist Church in the township ask Me to do weddings every
once and a while and we are glad to help the* out.
FroM the 12th to the 17th we had one of the first Vacation Bible Schools here in

Cape Town.

Steve ZlMMerMan taught the youngest children, Fran taught the children

froM

ages 6 to 10 and I taught the children fro ages 11 to 15. The first night we only had about 40 children, but by the end of the week we had close to 100, especially the last two nights. The theMe this year was God's creation and It worked very well. Each class had their lessons, crafts, and each participated in the closing prograM on the last day (Saturday). We are presently planning another VBS (actually called Holiday Bible School
here, HBS) for this coMlng June because this one went so well.

brother Jon arrived froM KlMberley for a three week stay also. We had a house full of people for a wonderful ChristMas holiday. On OeceMber 21th My Mother's wedding took place in the township of Mfuleni. Her new husband's naMe is Collins BlacMarr. Their
wedding was probably unique because I think It was the first tlMe a white couple ever good Married In this township. Therefore, Many people were calling this a "royal" wedding. We had about 300 people present and the service lasted for about 1 hour. There were at least d songs that the people sang for Mother and Collins. It was a grand tlMe for everyone. They have since returned to the United States and are living in HaMpton, GA. The Larry Mullens faMlly and Jon HaMilton went hoMe on January 7th. 19dd was a very good year for us and the work in South Africa. We had nany new
