A. Read the passage given and identify the main ideas and supporting
ideas.
When I first joined the residential school, I was really miserable as I thought I could
not adjust to the new school environment. I have even thought of calling it quits
and going back home.
I talked to my sister who gave me a few pointers on what I needed to do.
Her advice game me food for thought. I started by joining the school clubs and
societies and took and active part in them. I joined the English Language Society,
the Red Crescent Club and the tennis club. I made friends with the members in
these clubs and participated in all their activities.
I approached a few of my classmates and realized that we have a lot in
common. The class on the whole was noisy but the students where hardworking.
The class monitor was very friendly but strict. He did not accept excuse for laziness.
One of the students was the class clown. He had the talent of making comical facial
expressions. There were other interesting characters who must have the last word
even with teachers. But, they are harmless and the teachers enjoy such exchanges
with them.
There was a strict timetable and routine at the hostel. Every morning, we
were up by 6.00 a.m. for the morning prayers. Breakfast was at 6.45 a.m. and then
it was off to school before 7.15 a.m. After school, we attended extra-curricular
activities and tuition. Dinner time was at 8.00 p.m. and this was followed by study
time.
Other activities I was involved in the included offering my services for some
of the school activities for the year. I volunteered to help with the school annual
sports day and the fund-raising Food and Fun Fair. I participated in the annual
Cross Country.
I felt much happier after I learned to adjust to the residential school and
hostel life.

Read the text. Complete the graphic organizer with information from text.
Trees plays a vital role in keeping our environment healthy and balanced. The trees
on our planet, however, are being depleted at a rapid rate. Estimation revealed that
more than 50 percent of trees have disappeared due to human activity.
When tree are cleared, it leaves the ground exposed to the elements.
Rainwater washes away the soil because there are no plant roots holding the soil
together. This is called erosion. The loose soil is then deposited into rivers or drains
making them shallow. When it rains, water will overflow because it cannot be
channeled properly. As a result, flash floods will happen.
Forests are homes to many species of flora and fauna. Deforestation destroys
the habitats of all living things in the forests. Plants and animals are pushed to
extinction because of this. We have already lost many plants due to our actions. As
a consequence, there is a loss of biodiversity in the area threatened by
deforestation.
Trees prevent the running off the water and this helps the soil to absorb
flowing water. They draw up water via their roots, which are then released into
atmosphere in the form of vapour. When trees are cut down, it results in the
climate getting drier in that area. This disrupts the natural water cycle, which will
ultimately lead to the reduction of water resources.
