COURSE SYLLABUS CHEMISTRY 26.1 (Elementary Analytical Chemistry Laboratory) Course credit: 2 units Objectives At the end of the course, the students should be able to: Understand the basic concepts in analytical chemistry, especially the different methods of chemical analyses. Apply these concepts in problem solving and in analytical laboratory work. Treat analytical data using correlation and appropriate statistical concepts.

Examinations The points in the exam may or may not total with 100 and therefore, what will be recorded is the percentage (e.g. 125/130 is 96.15% and 45/80 is 56.25%, the values 96.15% and 56.25% are the grades that will reflect on my record). The final grade for this course will be computed based on the following criteria: 35% will come from laboratory formal reports, 40% will come from the midterm and final lab exams, 15% will come from your special experiment or practical exam, and 10% will come from your laboratory performance. Cell Phones If you carry a cell phone, double check before the class starts to ensure that it is in silent mode. This is to ensure that no one is disturbed during the lab period. If you wish to make a call, do it outside the lab after getting permission from the instructor. Academic Dishonesty You are hereby notified that the Discipline of Chemistry considers any type of academic dishonesty cheating, plagiarism, representing the work of others as your own, and dry-labbing or pencil titrating a very grave offense and will respond appropriately in the event of any apparent academic dishonesty. Formal Reports Each group must have their formal reports submitted a week after completion of the experiment. The formal report should follow the standard format which will be discussed before the start of the first experiment. Late lab reports will be given a deduction.

Logbook Each group should have a logbook. In this logbook, the date, the title of the experiment, objectives, materials, procedures (in past passive voice) or schematic diagram will be written. Data and Results are also recorded in the logbook (create a data sheet).The logbook should contain a Table of Contents, should be paginated, and should be covered with colored paper and plastic. The color designation will identify the section you are in. All official data are written on the front pages while computations and other notes are written on the back pages. No page of the logbook must be torn. Remember that the logbook will serve as your documentation for the experiment. The prelab discussions and reports are also placed in the logbook. Locker and Lab Kits Each group should check the locker assigned to them for the purpose of ensuring security to the glassware issued. It has been noted that some students get glassware from other groups so as to compensate for their breakages, losses, and in the long run avoid penalty. Each group must have their own trash bins, markers, masking tapes or labels, paper towels or tissue, alcohol, liquid soap, and hand soap. It is also advised that each group must have their own wash bottles and droppers. Correct Lab Attire Any student who does not have a lab gown will not be allowed to perform the experiment. Wearing of shorts, sandals, and other improper attire in the lab is also not allowed. This is to ensure the safety of the analyst during the course of experiment. In some experiments, gloves and goggles are needed.
