Breast Cancer Awareness Program


October is the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month as mandated by the Department of Health. According to the statistics, the Philippines is the leading country with most number of breast cancer in Asia while it ranks 9th in the whole country. This is an alarming fact but what happens is it continues to receive in sympathetic attention. Breast cancer is one of the most dangerous diseases in existence today. The dangerous thing about breast cancer is that although almost everyone is aware of it, but not everyone really takes it seriously. This program aims to tap public consciousness about breast cancer, information dissemination and support for the women of the target community. This is to equip them of knowledge that could lessen their anxiety on having breast cancer and to fight breast cancer. Furthermore, this program is an effort to raise awareness of breast cancer and reduce the disease's stigma by educating women of its symptoms and treatment options.

Program description: The said program is focused on Breast Cancer early detection, regular breast self-examination and annual mammograms, along with sufficient information and resources about breast health issues. It will be scheduled on the month of October in a certain community. It will be participated by women aging 18 years old and above residing in the chosen community and its proponents are the students of Bicol Christian College of Medicine I. It will focus on the general information on breast cancer, its diagnosis, prevention and treatment. Also, it involves demonstration on how to screen their breasts on their own for early detection to reduce the number of cases of breast cancer. After the lecture, the participants are encouraged to take part awareness campaign by making a commitment to be responsible advocates against breast cancer.

General Objective: Reduce incidence of breast cancer among women through awareness and prevention. Specific Objectives: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Discuss breast cancer awareness and prevention Stress importance of maintaining healthy lifestyle and practices Demonstrate proper detection and screening of breast cancer Evaluate knowledge of participants gained from the discussion Encourage the participants to take part in the responsibility in raising awareness against breast cancer in the community

Target population: Women aged 18 years old and above

Strategies: The seminar will cover the topics on basic information on breast cancer, risk factors, signs and symptoms, diagnosis and treatment. Participants will also need to fill-up the Breast Cancer Risk Assessment Tool to determine if they are highly or moderately at risk for breast cancer. After the discussion, demonstration on the proper Breast Self-Examination will be done to evaluate if the participants have learned something from the discussion. Program Content 1. Time-bound The program will be implemented every Saturday and Sunday in October. Evaluation The group was able to cover the discussions on breast cancer awareness. The participants knowledge was evaluated through self-demonstrations. The prevalence of breast cancer is decreased.
