A row of Blue Ridge Pot-
tery lines the exterior brick
wall, just below the sign of the
Main Street Mall. Inside, vis-
itors will discover odds and
ends, like old license plates,
Coca-Cola glass bottles, an-
tique farm tools and locally
produced dishware.
Also inside, the stores
owner, John Hashe, points
to a brown box with the sign
We Buy Junk and Sell An-
tiques.
It was 20 years ago, in
March of 1989, when Hashe
and Mickey Hatcher decided
to go into business together.
They purchased a building,
located in a block once hous-
ing the Unaka Stores, Coleys
Pharmacy and the old Bar-
ron Theatre, on Main Ave-
nue between Gay and Union
streets. It had been empty for
about four years, when the
two purchased the building.
At that time, Hashe was
beginning to appreciate an-
tiques, after dabbling in an-
tiques for a few years.
I was into antiques and
he enjoyed sporting goods,
Hashe said.
For the rst decade in busi-
ness, Hashe and Hatcher
sold a unique combination of
antiques and sporting goods.
Our store grew and grew
over the years. Then about
ten years later, Hatcher start-
ed to get into other things
and left the business, Hashe
said.
Now, Hashe soley operates
the Main Street Mall in his-
toric downtown Erwin.
I have had a lot of fun do-
ing what I love, Hashe said.
I have met a lot of great and
interesting people.
During a visit by The Er-
win Record, Hashe mingled
with a couple from Michigan.
Ive met a lot of people over
the years, he said. We talk
about what happens in Er-
win and what happens from
wherever they are from.
With about 65 percent of
his business coming from out
of town, the Main Street Mall
gets a lot of visitors that come
at least once a year. Unfortu-
nately, Hashe said, business
has been slow this past year.
The economy has really
hurt business, he said. It
has really slowed my busi-
ness and others along Main
Avenue.
But, still, business con-
tinues and opportunities to
gather new customers come
often. Being on Main Av-
enue gives the store a lot of
great exposure, Hashe said.
Hashe advertises in news-
papers and magazines
around the region, and gets
most of his business dur-
ing the Unicoi County Apple
Festival.
Thats my livelihood, he
said of the Apple Festival. I
get most of business during
the festival. I have to stock up
on antiques throughout the
year just to get ready for the
event.
While Blue Ridge Pottery
is still popular, Hashe said
people come for all types of
unique items. I believe ev-
erybody collects something,
he said. I myself collect ev-
erything. I enjoy something
for a little while and then sell
it. A lot of times, I regret sell-
ing it afterwards.
Among the items avail-
able are old farming equip-
ment, music records, books,
Clincheld Railroad para-
phernalia and more.
Hashe could not nd a date
of the old building, which has
changed several times over
Antique dabbling leads
to decades of treasures
the years.
He pulled out three post-
ers, dating back to 1916, ad-
vertising boxing events at the
old Barron Theatre.
One night, a local boy was
beaten by a guy from out of
town, Hashe said. Locals
were so upset that they had
to take the injured guy out
the back door to get him out

of town.
He said he enjoys selling
antiques in a place with so
much history.
The Main Street Mall is
open Monday through Satur-
day, usually from 10 a.m. to 5
p.m. The store is open, if you
can nd me, Hashe said.
The phone number for the
store is 743-7810.
Main Street Mall celebrated 20 years of business this year.
