Foreshadowing

Foreshadowing is the technique of giving clues to coming events in a narrative.

The above frame is from Jeff Smith’s Bone. What clues does he give in this frame? What
coming events can we predict are ahead in the story?

Foreshadowing creates interest and adds suspense.

Bonus Red Herrings are clues that are deliberately false given by the author to send
Info the readers or views off in the wrong direction.
Flashback
Flashback is an interruption of the action to present events that took place at an earlier
time.

A flashback can provide information that helps readers understand a character’s current
situation. Flashbacks usually occurring in one of two ways:

1. retells events prior to the main narrative as if they took place at the same time as
the main narrative
2. someone believes he or she is in a situation that occurred earlier in life
