Question 1 What are the measurement rules and principles for ACMV ductwork? Answer: Principles of measurement 1. type of installation shall be measured separately Example: a. Supply air duct b. Return air duct 2. kind and quality of material shall be stated in each description Example: a. Galvanised steel duct b. Stainless steel duct c. Fire rated duct Measurement rules 1. Duct shall be measured the net surface area of the duct over all bends, offsets, junctions, tee and the like duct fitting. Example: GI Duct 600mm (W)*200mm (D)*2000mm (L) Surface area = (600mm+200mm)*2*2000mm=3.2 m2 2. Duct insulation shall be measured separately and pre-insulated duct shall be given in the description of the ducting Example: 25mm thick fibre glass insulation for ductwork 600mm (W)*200mm (D)*2000mm (L) Surface area = (600mm+200mm)*2*2000mm=3.2 m2

Question 2 The client decided to omit the electric water heater for the maid toilet of condominium units, briefly describe the items for M&E works need to be omitted from the M&E contract. Answer: Items to be omitted from M&E contract are as below: 1. Water heater (type of installation and the kind, quality of the heater need to be stated) Example: 50L electric type water heater (1 no) 2. pipes and pipes fittings a. Cold water supply pipe Example: 20mm diameter cold water supply stainless steel pipe (50 meters) b. Hot water supply pipe Example: 20mm diameter hot water supply copper pipe (25 meters) 3. Accessories and Ancillaries a. Valves Example: 20mm cast iron gate valve (2 nos) 20mm cast iorn check valve (1 no) b. Strainer Example: 20mm cast iron strainer (1 no)

Question 3 The M&E contractor is claiming additional works for AC ductwork. His quotation for additional works for 25mm thick external insulation for ductwork is based on the overall dimensions of ductworks and thickness of insulation. Analyze and discuss the validity of this claim.

Answer: Under their quotation the cost of insulation should be calculated base on the type of insulation to be applied and also the surface area to be applied with insulation. 1. Type, size, material of the insulation and the unit rate need to be clearly stated in the quotation. Example: 25mm thick fiber glass insulation for ductwork at SGD$xxx per/m2. 2. Surface areas of the duct to be apply insulation. The surface area of the insulation is based on the surface area of the duct. Example: 25mm thick fibre glass insulation for ductwork 600mm (W)*200mm (D)*2000mm (L) Surface area = (600mm+200mm)*2*2000mm=3.2 m2 Therefore under the quotation the contractor should quote for: To apply 25mm thick fibre glass insulation on 3.2m2 surface area ductwork at SGD$xxx per/m2 Total cost = 3.2m2*SGD$xxx per/m2

Question 4 The fire protection installation contractor is claiming the additional addressable type smoke detectors. He submitted a smoke detector layout plan and quotation of smoke detectors. The wiring costs for smoke detector are calculated based on the estimated cable length. As a quantity surveyor, assess the validity of the wiring cost. Answer: The contractor should not claim for the wiring cost for the additional addressable smoke detectors, addressable smoke detectors are connect in one single series loop and link back to fire panel. To add in additional smoke detectors it should be quote base on the point of addressable detectors required and the wiring cost should not be separate out as one of the items to be quote.
