Agenda
What is Integration? Evolution of Integration
70s 90s Today

Why Integrate? Integration from a Business Perspective Modeling Interactions and Protocols / Messaging System Architectures Integrated Building Example Case Study Example Question and Answer Session

What is Integration?
Depends on the industry IT, BAS, Security, Industrial all have a different definition From Wikipedia
Digital integration, in computer science, allows data from one device or software to be read or manipulated by another, resulting in ease of use; see also XML Enterprise application integration, also known as systems integration, as the use of software and computer systems to bring together a set of enterprise computer applications

From Nonamepedia
Facility Enterprise Integration, the use of software, computers, and application processors to bring together a set of facility and enterprise applications to optimize energy, comfort, safety, and financial value

Evolution of Integration 70s

Pneumatic Controls, Building Automation Overlay, Fire Alarm, Security
Single Manufacturer Proprietary Protocols and Networks Single Station Proprietary Hardware monitored 24/7
More people less technology

Cryptic User Interface 1.0.101 ON Slide projector for graphics Other systems integrated by Dry Contact or 4-20ma Few specialized algorithms Operators performed energy and optimization routines.

Evolution of Integration 90s

Direct Digital Controls, Building Automation, Fire Alarm, Security
Single Manufacturer Proprietary Protocols PC based front end monitored 9-5
More technology less people

Advanced User Interface Advanced energy and integration algorithms running on the main server Server becomes the integration hub with proprietary and Ethernet networks More Integration with open protocols such as Modbus
Less integrated by Dry Contact or 4-20ma

Evolution of Integration Today

Direct Digital Controls, Building Automation, Fire Alarm, Security, Irrigation, Wastewater, Elevator, Business Systems etc
Multiple Manufacturers
Competitive Procurement for Systems and Services Open Distribution

Multiple Open Protocols

More options to integrate No more Dry Contact, 4-20ma, or Proprietary Integration

Each System is a Peer with Powerful Distributed Intelligence

More technology less people Each system can stand alone but is integrated to add value

No Single Command Center - Any Web Browser is a Command and Engineering Center Advanced energy and integration algorithms running on the main server and in distributed processors

Evolution of Integration Today

Still plenty of 90s Architecture New integration strategies are available and being implemented IP Centric with systems sitting directly on IP backbone Business models (instead of technology) are driving integration to create value Enterprise Integrations becoming as important as field bus integrations

Why Integrate?
Integration only makes sense if it adds value All stakeholders must agree
CFO, COO, CIO, Facilities Director, Security and Safety Director, Energy Manager

Test the business model then design a technology architecture Think about usage scenarios and general information transfer required to meet the needs of the tenant and stakeholders Model the interactions between systems Develop an Architecture to represent the physical world Think, Model, Architect

Think about Integration from a Business Perspective

Multi-tenant Office Building Marketed as Class A, High tech, Energy efficient, Green, Comfortable and Safe Systems being installed:
Card Access/Elevator Access HVAC Lighting Energy Monitoring Business Enterprise

HVAC and Lights from 7am-7pm M-F After hours usage billed extra What degree of systems integration makes sense? Where can I derive value?

Customer Goals
Migrate to an open enterprise platform that integrates all building management systems into a single, easy to use, web-enabled portal Interface with guest management infrastructure: lighting controls, energy monitoring, security systems, paging devices, guest room controls, financial systems and Oracle database Utilize existing IT structure, existing building management systems and all guest service systems Improve operational efficiencies, maximize guest experience, reduce costs and gain greater returns Control and monitor energy usage in order to reduce consumption and utility costs Integrate all (new and legacy) building systems

Project Requirements
Web IT Portal based solution Open platform with enterprise connectivity capabilities Simple to use - no special software required by users and operators Customized interface that integrates with existing BAS, guest management, lighting, paging, LON-based room controllers, Help Desk and the companys Oracle database and accounting system A Maintenance Asset Management system which operates barcode readers and includes WiFi connectivity, database Sync and inspection modules

Benefits of an Integrated Building

$ Savings: Validated savings of 25.3% of energy costs so far Operational Benefits: Accurate month end forecasting, ability to find peak periods of consumption in order to plan energy management strategies around actual issues. Provides ability to verify the affect of changes rather than making a guess and waiting for the invoice Real time reporting of plant issues e.g. If a cooling tower shows a high flow rate, we know when it is happening and can rectify the problem rather than looking at the data at month end when the damage (cost) has already been done. Filters are only replaced when dirty status is advised rather than blanket replacement leads to lower replacement and labor costs. Previously, A/C complaints was the number 1 complaint from our guests, in 2005 A/C complaints dropped to number 9.
