REAL WEDDING
Our Real Wedding this issue, shot by Jean-Pierre Uys Photography, will take your breath away with its style and elegance, not to mention the romantic and breathtaking South African scenery. On a perfectly warm and sunny day in October, Shelley and Nkululeko tied the knot at the MolenVliet Wine and Guest Estate in South Africa, surrounded by friends and family from across the globe. When asked what the most romantic moment of the joyful celebration was, Shelley couldnt choose just one - from the proposal in Spain, to going to bed with a new surname that night, and every moment in between, it was all romantic. Their day was thoughtfully designed to be elegant and sophisticated but so relaxed and welcoming that it was the joy of the occasion that truly shined through. Super stylish details like glittering chandeliers, mirrors, candlelight and amazing fashion for the whole wedding party complemented the simple and organic look of their surroundings and wowed every one of their beloved guests. The bride chose a dramatic wedding gown from Malcolm Kluk and Christiaan Gabriel Du Toit, and canary yellow dresses by the same designer for her bridesmaids. A few modern fairytale details that we cant get enough of - for an extra bit of luck Shelley attached a 1965 six-pence to her gorgeous Jimmy Choo wedding shoes, and then rode to the cer-

emony in style in a 1958 Bentley. During the ceremony her incredible five-meter-long veil even got its own moment in the sun, taking full advantage of a brief and sudden gust of wind, to delight the guests and spread its wings! Shelley and Nkululekos goal for their wedding was to savor every single moment. They were calm and relaxed throughout their big day, enjoying every last detail as they committed their lives to each other, surrounded by their family and friends, in this gorgeous natural setting. Cant you just feel their joy and ease in these stunning portraits by Jean-Pierre Uys as they took time to themselves to walk throughout the vineyards? Using a wedding colour palette of cream, grey-silver, off-white and black, Shelley and Nkululeko created an event that felt both sophisticated and relaxed. Mirrors, crystals and green foliage were used on the tabletops to accent the neutral colours, and there were plenty of candles and subdued sparkling lighting to set a romantic mood. The couples first dance was to Al Greens Lets Stay Together, and from the looks of joy and love on their faces, we have no doubt in our minds thats exactly what these two will do!

BEEHIVE AT MOSCHINO We fondly remember Amy Whinehouses epic beehive, and in a Sixties inspired theme, Moschino went down that road, though a bit less extreme. Part your hair at side. Back comb the hair starting from the crown of the head down to the bottom- dont scrimp on the hairspray. Fix the loose strands and then smooth the front with spray.

TUCKED HAIR ALLA 1940S BY RODARTE The Fall Winter season looked back at the ladylike style of ages gone by. At Rodarte, mistresses in twists, a tucked bob like do- voluminous and dramatic achieved the look. Blow dry hair with heat diffuser, back comb with plenty of hairspray. Tuck lengths underneath as to create a bob. Pin with an oversize accessory or leave as is.

38 myfairytalewedding.co.za

PUCCI WHIMSICAL BRAIDS Medieval hair has come back. Pucci masters the look with whimsical braids and natural wavy locks. Part your hair in the middle and pin back the ends. Take hair from the nape of the neck and braid, following the curve of your head. Pin in place.

DOLCE & GABBANA BAROQUE UP-DO The FW13 season sees a huge Baroque influence. Dolce&Gabbana took the trend to the letter and to accentuate the look, intricate headbands or hair combs have been added. Part your hair, tie up in a low bun, smooth with anti frizz gel and slip into place your favourite jewel encrusted headband.

one your arms, abs, thighs, and everything else in just 20 minutes a day with this workout routine, designed with the busy bride in mind. When youre choosing chair sashes, narrowing your playlists, and scooting to dress fittings, it may feel impossible to fit in a decent workout. But its quality, not quantity, that really counts, says Lynn Bode, personal trainer and owner of WorkoutsForBrides.com. If you truly do not have more than, say, two hours per week to devote to exercise, then make those two hours as effective as possible, she says. And with the limited time you do have, try to incorporate both cardio workouts and strength training exercises, Bode advises. Interval training and boot-campstyle workouts are great choices, as they both burn a lot of calories and can offer an option of both cardio and strength-training in one workout. Shes devised this pre-wedding plan to offer heartpumping benefits while toning what she considers to be the top bridal target areas -- those most exposed in dresses: triceps, shoulders, and upper back. Perform each move for 30 to 60 seconds before advancing to the next exercise. After completing the final exercise, rest for 30 to 60 seconds and then return to first to complete another set. Do a total of 2 to 3 sets per session. Move 1: Back Flye/Lunge Combo Grab a resistance band with handles. Secure the middle of the band under your left foot and extend your right foot about 2 to 3 feet behind you. Hold band handles in both hands with arms at sides. Bend your left knee to a 90-degree angle as you lower down toward the floor. (Your right foot bends slightly too, with only your right toes on the ground.) Simultaneously extend your arms out to your sides, up to shoulder level. Keep your left knee from extending in front of your toes. Return to start position, repeat, and switch sides. Move 2: Power Air Jump Start with feet together and hands together. Using your leg muscles, jump off the ground as far as you comfortably can while opening your legs out wide. Simultaneously make a circular motion over your head with your hands and back bring them back to center. Repeat.

Move 3: Push-Up on Ball Lie on your stomach on a stability ball, walking your arms out on the floor in front of you until your hands are under your shoulders, fingers pointing forward. (The ball should be resting underneath your hips and upper thighs.) Bend your elbows and slowly lower your body to the floor. Keep your back straight throughout the move; do not allow it to sway or arch. Return to start position and repeat. Move 4: Jump Rope Jump both feet off the ground together as you bring the rope under your feet. Move 5: Balancing Arnold Press Sit comfortably on a stability ball with both feet on the floor. Begin by holding dumbbells in both hands, arms extended down to your sides, palms facing out in front of you, elbows against your torso. Bring hands to shoulders (palms facing shoulders) in a biceps curl, then extend both arms overhead, rotating dumbbells so that your palms face out again as you straighten your arms. Reverse each action to return to start position and repeat. Move 6: Moving Front Kicks Stand with feet together. Raise your left knee up to hip level, then kick leg directly out in front of you. As you lower your left foot down, move forward slightly and kick out with your right foot. Move forward with four kicks, then back again with four kicks. Repeat sequence. Move 7: Bridge Lift with Triceps Extension Begin by lying on the stability ball with your shoulder blades and head resting on the ball. Feet are on the floor with knees bent, hips dropped down. Arms are extended above head, elbows bent 90 degrees with palms facing each other. Raise hips up so that you create a straight line from hips to knees as you simultaneously extend upper arms straight above head keeping lower arms still. Return to start position and repeat.

& Luxury combined

Black and white will always be a front-running trend in the wedding world. It is classic, elegant and timeless. There are endless ways to personalize this palette to make it all our own. Alchemy Fine Events & Isari Flower Studio collaborated on an old Hollywood inspired table using these timeless colors. The team created an old Hollywood inspired table featuring sparkling cut crystal and a winter palette of black and white framed by a crystal chandelier, delicate drapery and stunning black and quite checkered floor. Photographed ever so beautifully by Luna Photo.

48 myfairytalewedding.co.za

myfairytalewedding.co.za 49

With a bold black and white theme, accented with subtle hints of pinks and champagnes throughout the flowers and details, interspersed with fantastic vintage florals and sparkle anywhere we can fit it, this will, without a doubt, be an event to remember!

50 myfairytalewedding.co.za

To complement the floral palette of green, white and black, a super luxurious art deco inspired menu was created with a chinoiserie flair including illustrations in an aqua, green, black and white color palette. An intricate laser cut belly band featuring art deco and chandelier designs encompassed the folding menu that opened up to showcase delicate butterflies and romantic calligraphy.

The majestic scape came alive with luminous candles set aglow amidst cut crystal, urns and interesting shaped decanters. Winter white blooms were selected such as amaryllis and anemones with its black centers, reflecting and resonating the black touches from the other details such as the black chivaris. Giant ranunculus, azaleas, pierris, and parrot tulips snuggled up close with carnations while small wintyer cyclamen plants were placed under glass cloches for an interesting surprise. Glass candlesticks, bud vases, and other interesting shaped old world classic vessels were scattered amidst the arrangements for a multidimensional and interesting effect . For a dramatic statement, large black satin bows, a la Chanel, were tied around each place setting to remind each guest that their presence was a gift. For an additional sweet detail, green and white chocolates were custom designed as an additional touch to offer guests.

FLOWER ESCORT CARDS

4
DIRECTIONS:
Step 1: Draw roses Draw squiggly circles on the paper that youve chosen for the roses. If you want all of your roses to be the same size and shape, you can make a pattern and trace it. Otherwise just draw them freehand. Try to make them as circlelike as possible (theyll be much easier to roll later if you do). Step 2: Cut out roses Cut out the shapes you drew in step 1. Step 3: Cut roses into spiral Starting from the outside and working your way into the center, cut the roses into a spiral. Cut out a little hole in the middle. Step 4: Roll roses Starting from the outside and working your way in, roll each rose spiral as tightly as you can. Step 5: Draw leaf If you want for all of your escort cards to be the same, make a pattern and trace it, otherwise just draw each leaf separately. Make sure to include a stem on the end (youll need this to peg your flower escort cards when theyre finished). Step 6: Cut leaf out If youre not great with a pair of scissors, you can order pre-cut leaves from a craft store or even use rectangular or other-shaped tags. Step 7: Hot glue gun! Whip out your hot glue gun and go to town on either the leaf or the base of the rose (whatever works for you). Step 8: Glue rose Allow the rose to unfurl until youre happy with its size. Then press the rose into place and repeat until all of your escort cards are done Step 9: Finish Write the names onto the leaves, pin them up and youre done! If you dont have the greatest handwriting, you could also print the names or use a stencil. Mix it up Dont be afraid to suit the roses to your wedding colour scheme they can be green, yellow, blue, brown or any colour you like (and attached to any leaf you like).

TO BUY OR RENT?
Consider whether to rent or buy your formalwear. If you are having a formal wedding, consider buying a tuxedo. Most rental tuxedos are of moderate quality. Purchasing a tux now will save you money in the long run for future weddings and for formal events. You will also have a better fitting, tailored tux. THE PROS AND CONS OF RENTING OR BUYING A TUXEDO Do you buy or rent your tuxedo? The best way to decide is to ask yourself whether or not you see yourself attending a lot of Black-Tie events in the future. If you see yourself in this position, buying a tuxedo is probably the best decision. A tuxedo that is purchased can be tailored to your specifications. This makes for a tux that will fit and look a whole lot better. On the other hand, if you dont see yourself attending anything that requires a tuxedo, renting is your best choice.

PROS OF RENTING A TUXEDO: Cheap Finding a tuxedo to rent is fairly easy Lack of selection makes decisions easier to narrow down. Potential groomsmen dont need to search for tuxedos on their own. Practical- No use in buying a tuxedo youre only going to wear once. One Stop Shopping: You can shop for rental shoes and tuxedos all at one location. Easy to Match tux with Groomsmens tuxs CONS OF RENTING A TUXEDO: Lack of selection A lot of rental stores carry tuxedos that can look outdated or cheap Tuxedos cannot be tailored to suit your body type

PROS TO BUYING A TUXEDO: Wider selection is available for purchase A tuxedo can be tailored to fit your body type Retail stores carry more contemporary styles and cuts Stores often carry tuxedos of a higher quality If you plan on attending a lot of functions where a tuxedo is required, then buying is your best option. CONS TO BUYING A TUXEDO: Shopping for a tuxedo can be time consuming. Shopping at multiple stores, tailoring the suit to fit your needs, not being able to find the right shoes, etc. Quality tuxedos are often very expensive. Unpractical- buying a tuxedo you only plan on wearing once doesnt make much sense.

myfairytalewedding.co.za 55

FITTING into a TUXEDO or SUIT

Ask your fiance to come along with you to several Suit and Tux Shops for a try-on session. This will allow her to give an opinion on the style of tuxedo that best compliments her dress. Consider giving your guys a break and choose a standard black tux with or without a certain vest and tie for them. That way they can wear their own tux if they own one. If you go with matching vests and ties, they can be rented separately. Set yours apart from your groomsmen and choose a different colour tie and/or vest from the rest of your groomsmen. If you choose to have your groomsmen wear the exact tuxedo, set up a time to fit formalwear. If they are coming from different parts of the country, choosing a national chain may make this easier for your boys. Some chains offer websites that allow your guys to enter in their sizes. Any formal wear rental chain can meet any particular needs you might have. Just make sure there is a store located close to the wedding location so items can be picked up and returned easily. This can avoid groomsmen having to bring their rented tuxs on the plane and having them wrinkled on the wedding day. SHOES: Regardless of whether you wear a suit or a tuxedo, youre going to need new shoes. Shine them up at a shoe shiner near you! If wearing a suit, your belt should be the same color as the shoes. A tux does not require a belt. Do not even try it. If you have lost weight, go with suspenders. The Tux shoes: Patent-leather shoes are the standard, but definitely not necessary. A brand new pair of black leather shoes, newly shined will also work and may be more comfortable for the hours of dancing ahead. Rental companies will charge you an additional fee for usually low quality patent-leather shoes. Consider wearing your own new black shoes instead. TUXEDOS: The tuxedo is always a classic. A good tuxedo is formal wear at its very best. Simple, elegant, and classic. The tuxedo has been the standard for mens formalwear for years. Think 007, Cary Grant, and Sinatra. A Few Tips: - Gray or white tuxedos are strictly wedding attire, whereas black tuxedos can be used for multiple events. - Cummerbunds have become a fashion faux paus. Go with a vest. No Colours. Remember that there are flowers to coordinate with. Go with Black or Silver. Pattern or not, its your choice. Dont forget the matching handkerchief. - Either Bow ties or long ties are appropriate. Black, white, silver, the choice is yours. The bow tie is the mainstay of the classic tuxedo. Its the safe and classic look most Grooms decide to go with. Ties are a nice alternative to this tradition. A tie is modern, sleek, and can set you apart from your Groomsmen wearing bow ties. - Collared shirts are fashionable with either tie type. The Wing Collar is fading, but still doable with either tie type. Pleated Shirt or Fine Ribbed shirt - French Cuffs are a must. Maybe youll get some cuff links for your Groomsmen. - If you go with a real bow tie, make sure you know how to tie it or have some one who knows how to be at your wedding. - Tails are for conductors. Not cool, in our opinion. But, to each his own. SUITS: A refined suit can also leave a lasting impression. A fine tailored suit is hip, young, and a refined alternative that almost anybody can pull off. A suit can be a practical option for many grooms. After the wedding, a suit can be used for a variety of occasions. Your wedding may be the perfect excuse for investing in one. Most high quality suits dont come cheap. Quality rarely does. But a well-made suit can last you a lifetime if its properly taken care of. In recent years, a suit has become an acceptable alternative to tuxedos. A suit can offer more flexibility when it comes to personal style. Think Oceans 11, George Clooney, and Jude Law. For a less formal wedding, a nice suit can still be classy. A black pinstripe suit will really look sharp next to your beautiful bride with or without a tie! Again, take it a notch (or two) higher than the typical suit you would buy. Different brands have different fits. For example, Prada makes suits that tend to be somewhat fitted, Armani tends to be on the looser side and Hugo Boss tend to fit the tall, slender person very well. Find a brand that matches your budget, fit, and style, and stick with it. Beach weddings can be extremely causal. Linen pants, a fine white pressed suit and barefoot. Stylin! Regardless of what you decide to do, make sure the suit youre wearing matches the mood and theme of the wedding.

TRAVEL

YOUR HONEYMOON

WHERE TO BEGIN PLANNING

Start early. Communicate, and talk, talk, talk... Honeymoons are a state of mind. Your dreams as well as a host of practical elements have to be combined to make it perfect. Remember, your honeymoon isnt only a romantic trip. It is also a chance to relax and spend time together after the wedding. In fact, this is the time when your new life together really begins. Doing your honeymoon homework really pays off. First, talk to your mate and discuss your honeymoon dreams and fantasies. Then, ask yourselves the following questions: Do we want to get married in the same place we honeymoon? Destination weddings are a fast growing trend. Marrying in a hotel away from home either alone or with a few friends or family members can save a considerable amount of money. Also, when you honeymoon at the same hotel or resort, you wont have to pack after the wedding or run for the airport. Do we want to go around the corner or around the world? Figure out how long you can be away and arrive at a general budget. This will determine how far you can go. Do we want to save or splurge? This is the trip of a lifetime, so its the time to splurge on

luxury rooms and memory making activities if you can afford it. Do we want sunshine or snow? Discuss the climates you like best and choose your honeymoon destination accordingly. Skiers who marry in the summer can honeymoon in South America. Sun lovers who marry in the winter can choose from a variety of beach destinations around the world. Do we want to learn something new that we can enjoy together? You might like to combine your honeymoon with a golf, tennis, skiing or sailing school to learn a sport that you can enjoy together for the rest of your lives. Do we want an all inclusive resort, a cruise, a honeymoon package or a trip tailored for just the two of us? Each of these options have advantages. Choose the one that matches your dreams. All-inclusive resorts are an easy way to go. Most meals, sports equipment, tips, and some drinks are part of the price. Honeymoon packages, available from hotels, airlines and tour operators, are designed with romance in mind. They often include special perks that other stays do not. When booking a hotel, ask if they have special packages. If you choose to cruise the ship is your home away from home and most onboard meals and activities are included in the cost. Book early for a table for two in the dining room. If you have a special place in mind and want a trip tailored to your very own wishes and pace, work with a travel agent to make sure that everything you dreamed of is built in.

TOP TEN Planning Tips

Here are our top ten honeymoon planning tips from romance travel expert Nancy Barkley, of www.honeymoonsandgetaways.com: 10. When should I start planning my honeymoon? The sooner the better. Your travel agent wants to make your honeymoon perfect, so theyll work as long it takes to achieve that. Planning ahead allows time to budget accordingly and get the necessary documents together. 9. Have an idea of your Geography. Yes, Seychelles, Maldives and Fiji are amazing honeymoon destinations, but not if you have only one week for your honeymoon. Picking an exotic location is ideal if you have enough travel time and dont mind long flights. Some locations require over a days traveling time and you will need to adjust to a time difference. 8. Know your budget. Airline fares play a significant role when planning your budget. If you are a frequent traveler, save your mileage and try to use your accumulated mile points. Many credit cards also offer airline mileage rewards that may assist you as well. 7. When do you want to leave? If you are getting married on a Saturday, you may want to rethink traveling the next day, especially when traveling to the Caribbean as most flights leave in the morning. Also, the month that you marry may affect your destination choice due to Mother Nature. You dont want to honeymoon in the Caribbean at the height of hurricane season! 6. What type of honeymoon are you looking for? Discuss with your fianc exactly what is most important for you to experience while on your honeymoon: Adventure, relaxation, touring, a little of everything? Communication is the key! Once you have some general ideas, discuss them with your travel agent who will provide options of where to go and stay. 5. What kind of resort are you looking for? All-inclusive? Would you like adult-only? Many resorts offer all-inclusive options, allowing you to know ahead of time exactly how much you are going to spend. Some resorts go one step further and include excursions or catamaran sailings with their all-inclusive packages. Adult-only resorts are a great choice for your honeymoon. Some family oriented resorts may also offer an adults-only section. If you choose a hotel that isnt all-inclusive and youre on a tight budget, many resorts have menus on their website so you can get a general idea of what you might spend on meals.

4. Does the hotel offer anything special because it is our honeymoon? Many resorts offer amazing honeymoon packages that can be purchased for a certain amount or are complimentary when booking a certain room category with minimum nights. The packages can include a romantic dinner on the beach, complimentary massages, breakfast in bed, free anniversary stays and many more. Your travel agent will be able to advise you on packages as well as price points and room categories that could include such benefits. 3. What kind of deposit do I need? When is final payment due? When do I need to pay? Most tour companies that travel agents utilize only require a minimum deposit with final payment, usually due 45 days prior to departure. Ask your travel agent about payment plans should you need one. Airlines dictate the rules for the payment of airline tickets. Most require full payment within 24 hours of making the reservation. 2. Do I need a Visa, do I need vaccinations? Some destinations do require Visas; your travel professional will be able to advise you of that requirement and assist in obtaining them. Also important is what type of passport you are traveling under, as many countries now require passports valid 6 months after entering country. If youre traveling to an exotic destination, its best to confirm with your doctor if they suggest vaccinations for travel in those regions. 1. I dont need insurance, this is my honeymoon and I will never cancel. There are hundreds of circumstances that could cause you to cancel your trip, return home early or force you to seek emergency medical treatment while traveling. Travel Insurance provides protection for your travel investment in case an unfortunate situation arises, such as sickness, bad weather, or civil unrest at your planned destination; just to name a few that one may find themselves in when they plan to travel domestically or abroad. Travel insurance also provides the peace of mind that you are not alone when you are really in need.

RECIPE
This teriyaki chicken recipe can easily be made on a weekday and comes together in about 30 minutes. With extra flavour from fresh orange and sweet honey, this has become one of our favourite go-to dinners. Everything comes together really quickly for this one. Just throw everything into a bowl, add the chicken and marinate for about 15 minutes. Then, add the chicken to a hot pan and cook until light golden brown on all sides. After that, add the marinade and cook until it becomes shiny, thick and begins to coat the chicken. We love using chicken thighs for this teriyaki chicken recipe, theres a bit more flavour and the thighs are a little more tender than chicken breasts. However, you could certainly use chicken breasts if thats more your style! One more thing, we use mirin in this recipe. You can usually find it in the international aisle of larger grocery stores or in Asian markets. Mirin is a sweet rice wine used in Japanese cooking. Not only does it add flavour to this recipe, it also provides luster to the teriyaki sauce. Ingredients: 1/4 cup (59 ml) low-sodium soy sauce 1/3 cup (79 ml) fresh orange juice (about 3 small oranges) 2 tablespoons mirin 3 tablespoons honey 2 teaspoons finely grated fresh ginger 1 teaspoon toasted sesame oil 1 3/4 pounds (794 grams) skinless, boneless chicken thighs 2 teaspoons orange zest (optional) Prep time: 20 minutes Cook time: 10 minutes Total time: 30 minutes Yield: 4
Heat oil in a large saute pan or wok (with lid) over mediumhigh heat. Once the oil is hot use a slotted spoon to add the chicken, but not the marinade. Save the marinade until later. Cook chicken, stirring occassionally, until lightly browned on all sides. Turn the heat to medium-low then add the marinade and cover pan with lid. Cook for 5 minutes. Remove lid then check to see if chicken has cooked through. If cooked, remove the chicken to a clean bowl. Allow the marinade to simmer for 1 to 3 minutes until thickened then toss with the chicken.

Honey Teriyaki Chicken 1 2

In a medium bowl, combine the soy sauce, orange juice, mirin, honey, ginger and sesame oil. Cut chicken thighs into bite-size pieces then add to the marinade. Let it marinade for 15 to 20 minutes.

Finishing Touch: Sprinkle top of teriyaki chicken with orange zest then serve with rice and/or vegetables.

NOTES To grate ginger, first peel the skin using a spoon just drag the spoon against the side of the ginger. Once peeled, use a fine microplane to grate. If you do not have a microplane, you can mince the ginger. If you do this, make sure the ginger is cut into very small pieces.

DECORATING TRICKS TO MAKE

Your New House Welcoming and Cozy

Moving into a new house usually takes some time to adjust. But with a minimum amount of effort, the transition from one comfort zone to the next can be smooth and pleasant. Heres some decorating tips and tricks that should convert your new home into an oasis of relaxation for both you and your guests.

Welcome Furniture Diversity Buying a large furniture set with everything in it may be the easiest way of filling up a room, but it is not always the most suited. You probably do not want your new home looking like a showroom, and believe it or not this will probably be the output of buying all your items from a single place. Do not be afraid of mixing things up a little, even if this means having different styles lined up. Diversity is the key to a vivid interior, one that stirs you up visually and that will probably appeal to your guests also. If you consider the overall result harmonious and enjoy being a part of it, your friends probably will too.

Make Good Use of Warm Colours It is no longer a secret that colours have the subtle ability to elicit various emotions and moods, making this design sector particularly interesting. You should know that while cooler colours like blue, purple and dark green can visually enhance a room, warmer tones such as peach-orange, brown and red can make a space feel more compact and therefore, more inviting. Just look how the generously-sized interior in the photo above is significantly reduced by adding curtains with an orange and red flower pattern next to the red sofas and yellow wall!

Multiple Sources of Lighting We often neglect the magical effects lighting can have on a room. It may seem strange, but with just a few fixtures in the right place, a room can easily appear bigger, taller longer, or cozier. So what is it about lighting that can make a place more inviting than the next? It all breaks down to the simple act of repetition. In order to reduce the scale of a room, consider placing several table lamps around, for an intimate atmosphere. You should only use a ceiling light for larger gatherings or formal events.

Think Comfortably- Fashionable Admit it-there isnt a single day that goes by without you stumbling across an incredible furniture piece. That fantastic red sofa spotted in a design magazine or the elegant armchair seen in a showroom on your way to work call out to you and slowly determine the need for possession. But a cozy home is not entirely about looks; it is mostly related to how furniture can enhance that sense of sweet familiarity. When testing a seating item for your new house, can you imagine yourself curled up in it with a good book and feeling all weight lifting off your shoulders? If that is not the case, perhaps you should keep searching. Ideally, furniture should pay tribute to both comfort and style. But if coziness is what you are after, a tiny compromise in aesthetics may prove to be a good idea in the long term.

Attention to Detail Small things like candles, funny plush toys or a book in the right place can give you a nice feeling of calm, but attention to detail can do wonders when having people over. A lot of people waste time and energy in making their house spotless and picture-perfect before the arriving of guests. Naturally, cleaning is good, but keep in mind that friends come over to visit you, not to inspect your home. Small things like fresh flowers spread around the house, a glass bedside carafe in their bedroom and the latest number of their favourite magazine on their bedside table are likely to make their stay more welcoming than a supertidy corner that they are not going to stumble upon anyway.

Ambiance Soothing background jazz music, dim lighting from various sources, plenty of cushions to choose from and armchairs that allow you to dive in softness- just some ideas to consider when setting up a welcoming atmosphere in your new home for yourself or your friends. Add a glowing fireplace light and your place is ready for a perfect cozy evening.

Surround Yourself with the Things You Love When planning on moving into a new house, the things you love should take center stage. Your home must primarily reflect who you are and the rest will slowly fall into place. That old collection of vinyl records, the painting you received during your art camp or those funny hats you love so much- simple things that come with precious memories.

The Magic of Touch One of the simplest tricks for a more welcoming home is texture. Surround yourself with things you would like to touch. Fluffy carpets, wavy wallpapers or smooth wooden furniture- all these can be easily integrated in a modern room, making it feel less rigid and perfectly comfortable. Moreover, when dealing with a large room, the proper use of fabric and texture can reduce the scale and provide the much wanted sense of coziness.

5 FINANCIAL TIPS FOR NEWLYWEDS

FINANCE

START THE COUNTDOWN In marriage as in life, there are few guarantees, and one of them is this: You will have to address your finances together, and in some depth. Whether you get married in your 20s or your 50s, you may suddenly find yourself party to someone elses creditcard debt, child-support commitment, student loans or foreclosure history -- or you may be involving your spouse in your own financial baggage. Romantic? No. But its a fact of modern coupling. Even if you have no monetary skeletons in your closet, marriage links you to someone else financially in a way that requires, at minimum, some thoughtful decisions. Who will pay the bills? How will you divide expenses? Will you combine everything? Nothing? Some things? Another guarantee: If you dont talk about money now, you will be talking about it later, and perhaps not quite as calmly. These five tips can help the newly married begin to work out their new, joint financial status and hopefully avoid the fiscal marriage meltdown that affects so many couples down the road. The first bit of advice is the most obvious one -- and is, in fact, a key to overall marital bliss. 1. TALK ABOUT IT Practice saying this phrase: Lets talk about it. This sentiment may be the most important one in your life together, and its crucial in your new financial situation. Unfortunately, many couples leave financial discussions for some fu70 myfairytalewedding.co.za

ture time when they become unavoidable -- in a crisis, or when someone makes a major purchase solo, or when long-buried debt suddenly comes to light. Money can be an awkward topic. Its personal and the very opposite of lovey-dovey. But the time to talk is now -- perhaps not on the honeymoon, but as soon as you get back home and settle in. The glow of your new life together can actually help here, since you may be more inclined toward financial compromise or a general generosity of spirit than later on, when life goes back to being life with all its stresses and distractions. Set aside a couple of hours, sit down with a pad of paper, your bank statements and other financial documents and dig in. You dont need to address everything immediately, but getting started early is important to the practical success of your marriage. 2. DISCLOSE EVERYTHING Hopefully, you and your new spouse tell each other everything -- or just about. And hopefully you at least tell each other all of the important stuff and will continue to do so. Guess what: Near the top of the list of important stuff is what you do, have done and will do with your money. If you have financial skeletons, disclose them completely, and right away. Are you in debt? Do you have a bankruptcy in your past? Can you no longer afford the car you drive but cant bear to part with it?

Even basic, neutral fiscal traits ought to be shared in order to avoid major conflict down the road. Whats your money personality? Are you a spender? A saver? Do you lean toward the risky or the safe side on the investment spectrum? Do you live within or at your needs? (Living above would probably fall into the skeleton category.) These things will come out, so theres no point in keeping them secret. Reveal them now, when How could you hide that from me? is not part of the discussion. Its not just an issue of honesty in your relationship, though. There are steps you can take in your new situation to make money matters more manageable. For instance, if you keep your finances separate until one spouse manages to raise his or her credit score, you may have the option of applying for loans solely in the more financially healthy spouses name. Or, if one of you is a big spender and the other is a big saver, you can lay some ground rules early on and adjust your budget accordingly, which reduces the likelihood that one partner ends up feeling financially babied, stifled or insecure. Which brings us to the next newlywed money tip ... 3. DIVIDE ACCORDINGLY Whether youve made it to your 20s, 30s, 40s or 80s before tying the knot, youve probably had at least a taste of financial independence. Some people are perfectly fine with establishing completely joint finances as soon as they get married; but for others, it can be a struggle. Theres no law saying that when two people tie the knot, they have to close all individual accounts and open only joint ones. You can, of course, combine everything, and if only one spouse is working, that may be the best move. But if both spouses get a paycheck, it sometimes makes sense to divide your earnings in other ways. These days, lots of couples have a joint checking account for joint expenses (such as rent or mortgage, groceries and entertainment), into which each puts a percentage of his or her earnings. On top of that, theyll also have two separate, individual accounts where they keep their own money. They may even have both joint and separate savings accounts. Some spouses dont combine their earnings at all. The advantage to separate accounts is that both of you get to retain some level of fiscal independence. Many working adults can find it somewhat restrictive to suddenly need permission before buying a new set of speakers or pair of shoes. Keeping something aside thats just yours can go a long way toward alleviating any issues of independence that may arise with a joining of the finances. Still, lots of couples find it ideal to have only joint accounts, which makes sense considering your lives are now legally and financially tied together. But thats not the only acceptable way to do it. Consider whether you and your spouse would benefit from maintaining some degree of financial independence, even if that simply means some mad money, and go with it. What matters is what works for you, not what your parents or your

friends did. Of course, there are some things that every couple should do ... 4. SAVE FOR LATER When couples are first starting out, the road ahead can look so bright, so new, so unencumbered by the unforeseen. It can almost seem like nothing could go wrong. Or maybe not -- these days, with both grocery store clerks and stock brokers seeing pink slips at record rates, its become rather obvious that financial security is, well, not all that secure. Those who find themselves without a cushion can end up in really hot water if one or both spouses jobs disappear, or if a health emergency arises. Putting money aside is a necessity. An emergency fund should hold at least three months worth of living expenses, and preferably more. This kind of cushion can be the difference between serious, long-term debt and a temporary setback. An emergency fund, though -- kept in an interest-bearing account -- is just one of the necessary recipients of the money you set aside. If you plan to buy your own home, youll need to start building up that down payment as soon as possible. Theres also retirement, which may seem pretty far off now but can really sneak up on you. One of the worst surprises couples can face is an unfunded retirement, and most experts recommend putting 10 percent of every paycheck, or else whatever you can afford, starting now, into a tax-deferred retirement fund to make sure youre not caught off guard a few decades from now. And finally, a somewhat unpleasant but very important task for the new couple ... 5. INSURE YOURSELF You probably dont want to think about anything that incorporates the line In the event of your untimely death. Nobody does. But now that youre married, even the remote possibility requires some attention. You dont need to make a big thing of it. There are just two documents that should be produced in order to protect your spouse from potentially damaging financial repercussions: a will and sufficient life insurance. Preparing a will makes it clear who will inherit your estate, and life insurance helps ensure your spouse doesnt find him- or herself unable to meet your formerly joint financial obligations if youre gone. What exactly goes into your will and how much life insurance you need depends on your individual circumstances. There are guides online to help you decide, or you can talk to a financial advisor for even more detailed, customized assistance. You can create a will and purchase life insurance online or do it in person with an expert. Whats important right now is that you establish at least a bare minimum of legal and fiscal security, just in case. The point here is not to be morbid or pessimistic; its to create the most financially stable situation for your new life together. When you get right down to it, its not even about money. Taking all of these steps to secure your financial future can help you on the road to creating a low-stress, high-happiness life together -- and that is romantic. myfairytalewedding.co.za 71

FAMILY PLANNING

Pregnancy Advice for Newlyweds

Babies are on the brain of many newlyweds. If youre among them, this guide, will help you go through everything from deciding whether getting pregnant is right for you and your spouse to your babys first few days of life: Deciding to Get Pregnant One of the first issues many newlyweds face is deciding whether to get pregnant and have a baby. On the one hand, you might love the idea of creating a family with your new husband or wife. But you want to make sure youre having a baby for the right reasons. On the other hand, youre just getting used to being married. Plus, a baby will change your relationship, could influence career choices, and take up a whole lot of your time. What to do? For starters, you must talk to your spouse honestly and openly about your desires and fears to determine whats right for you as a couple. You must also listen to your spouses opinion. Together, you must make these kinds of life-changing decisions. Getting Pregnant 74 myfairytalewedding.co.za For most newlyweds, trying to get pregnant is the fun part. Before you start trying to conceive, you should read up on the subject. The Conception Quiz is as entertaining as it is enlightening with information on the amount of folic acid women should take when trying to get pregnant and how to tell when youre most fertile. There are also tools from Maybe Mom ovulation prediction to your basal body temperature that can help you determine when you should have sex to optimize your chance of getting pregnant. If youre taking a while to get pregnant, dont worry. It often takes a while even for healthy couples to get pregnant. Infertility If youve been trying to get pregnant more than a year (or after six months if youre 35 or older), you might want some help with fertility testing. The first thing to do is see your doctor and have him or her recommend a fertility specialist. Then, learn all you can about infertility, its symptoms, and possible treatments.

Infertility can be a real blow to some couples, and youll need to rely on one another to cope during this difficult, stressful period. Pregnancy Congratulations! You are pregnant. Now what? Well, moms-tobe first have to reveal the big news about being pregnant to the dad. After that, you moms have to focus on the health of you and your baby the right kind of diet, taking your vitamins, visiting your ob-gyn regularly, and any problems you might be having and preparing yourself, your spouse and your home for baby. Much like the days leading up to your wedding, this can be as sweet a time as it is scary. Manage your stress and lean on your spouse for support. Labour and Delivery After nine months, your baby will be ready to come out into the world. Thats when the real work starts happening for mom and much less so for dad. The Guide to Labour and Delivery, in our next issue, will fill you in on everything from childbirth classes to

when you know youre going into labour to having a C-section. There are even tips on how a partner can participate and help mom get through natural childbirth. Babys First Days If this is your first child, everything about your babys first days will be new and exciting. The first week from latching on to breastfeed to coming home from the hospital can be a happy adventure for parents and baby alike. Getting to know your newborn and finding a rhythm when it comes to feeding, sleeping, and diaper changes will be your top priority. Now, life is all about bonding with the baby and making him or her a part of your new family while maintaining a loving, supportive marriage.
