Cracking down on auto insurance fraud

Johnson to work with police, prosecutors, state and industry leaders
Dear Friends, We will be working with the Michigan State Police, prosecutors and state and industry leaders to crack down on auto insurance fraud. All honest Michigan Johnson, saying every honest Michigan driver is paying for auto drivers are paying for insurance fraud, announces her new FAIR or Fighting Auto Insurance Rip-offs initiative. cheaters who try to game the system with fraudulent insurance. Worse yet are the criminals who prey on unsuspecting drivers, selling them bad insurance that wont protect them if they are in a crash. The total cost to taxpayers? About $220 million a year. Unfortunately, the problem is rampant and criminals are surprisingly sophisticated. For example, one of them even set up a phony help desk to verify insurance when our clerks called to check whether the certificate was valid. A one-day sampling by our office found more than 16 percent of all insurance certificates were invalid or fraudulent. (see map.) This new joint effort is being called FAIR or Fighting Auto Insurance Rip-offs. For more information, please visit our website. We will keep you updated. See a Detroit news editorial here. A big thank you for all of the warm greetings and kind words of encouragement at the Michigan Republican Leadership Conference. Great to see so many friends at our welcome barbeque!
