PASTORAL CORNER
A friend of mine landed in Honolulu this past week for some R&R. I was in Ontario Oregon last weekend doing a retreat for ministers and volunteers at Blessed Sacrament Church. What am I doing wrong? I am doing absolutely nothing wrong, at least in terms of destination. Both of us are doing what St. Paul tells Timothy to do in our second reading this weekend; stirring into flame the gift of God that has been given to us. We need both Honolulu and Ontario; we need to work on ourselves (R&R) so we can help others come to realize the Gift of God that is within them. I saw my task last weekend as helping people find the Gift of God that is within them so they can share it with others. I see this not just as my task but also the task of all of us; to help one another find and express the Gift of God that is within us so we can share it beyond our parish boundaries. I noticed during my presentations how many times I drew examples from individuals and groups here at St. Philip Neri. I didnt use any names so dont worry. A lot of very good stuff happens here in our parish and perhaps most of it goes unnoticed we just take so much of it for granted. There are many things that individuals and groups in our parish would like changed or be different than they are. This is all to the good. What does us no good is to look back to the so-called good old days, I wish, I wish, I wish. It also does us no good to think that because such and such isnt the way we like it to be, we just throw up our hands, as we are tempted to give up. I believe we are an alive, faith and spirit filled community. I believe we are in a process of re-birth and we need each and every one present in the now. We are not the discord found in our first reading at mass today. We may very well be the Mustard seed in our Gospel reading but what we need most is to do as Paul tells Timothy, to stir into flame the gift of God that is within us, each in our own unique way. Evangelization for us is to be the best: lectors, Eucharistic ministers, volunteers concerned with Peace & Justice, the environment; the most hospitable, prayerful, celebratory and playful community of faith that we can be. We need to honor our elderly (Wisdom) folk and we need to welcome and engage our young people into the life of the parish. We need to teach and lead by example so that we can be as attractive as we can be in welcoming those seeking a place of prayer, worship and community. All can be summed up in one bumper sticker, we need to be the change we seek.

SIGN-UP for GROWING OLD PILGRIMAGE SERIES

Do you dread growing old? Life after 60 offers some significant challenges or pilgrim opportunities, depending upon how you look at it. What is the shape of our relationship with God now that we are facing the Last Third of our life? Starting October 8, from 10:30 11:30 am on the second and fourth Tuesdays, Paulist Center, we will explore some of the areas we need to face as we make this pilgrimage. Facing Aging and Dying: Dealing with life no longer filled with accomplishments, changing interests, looking ahead to death. Living with limitations: Dealing with balance or vision or hearing loss, downsizing possessions. Doing Inner Work: Willingness to forgive, gratitude, wearing masks. Living In and Out of Community: Dealing with fewer friends, moving, needing care. Prayer and Contemplation: Living with uncertainty, writing a letter to God. Suffering: Reinterpreting suffering. Leaving a Legacy: How you want to be remembered. These discussions/sharing will last for seven weeks (none in December). Your input will be valuable so please plan to attend whether you are 60, 70, 80 or 90. Please register by emailing barbarah@stphiipneripdx.org or by calling the office (503.231.4955) so we have adequate materials and seating space.
