The Scarlian

VOLUME 57 SUMMER 2013

A STOMPING SUCCESS!

South Scarle Community Centre Progress Report

Planning and preparation work continues apace prior to the commencement of the construction work. The interim committee are holding bi-fortnightly meetings in order to get everything in place for a start date of 2nd September. Lee Marshall has been appointed as the Project Manager, and he is also our professional heating consultant. The contractors are being finalised. The Faculty has been granted by the DAC in Southwell, and Planning Permission has been granted by Newark and Sherwood DC (including 3 conditions which have now been discharged) for the external work. So all necessary permissions have been granted. All grants applied for have now been awarded, so all monies required are in place bar some contingencies. The large grants awarded by Wren and Biffa require contracts in place, and all paperwork for these have been sent to them along with the match funding of 10% of the awards. These monies have successfully been fund raised by the village over the last two years. Well done to all villagers who have helped this tremendous effort. Towards the end of August the Church carpets will be cleaned, removed and stored until the work is complete (hopefully by the end of November). All other loose items in the Nave will also be removed and stored. The medieval pews will be removed and stored off site, then returned on completion of the work. The nave under pew electric heating pipes will be removed and sold, as will the Victorian pews.

ADRIAN LAWTON IS OUR NEW PARISH CLERK

Adrian stepped into the breach when the previous incumbent, Alan Froggatt, resigned recently. We are grateful for all Alans hard work on behalf of the village and now look forward to supporting Adrian in the job.

CRAIG LAW TAKES ON ROLE OF VILLAGE VENTURES CO-ORDINATOR

Take a look at page 3 and see what Craig has got lined up for us in the coming months. Sounds exciting!

Village Ventures, Facebook & Twitter!

It was at Connies 90th birthday celebrations when I was approached by Judy Muirhead and Anita Clements to see if I would be interested in attending a promoters event for Village Ventures. You are not doubt asking the same question that I did, What the heck is Village Ventures? Village Ventures Village Ventures brings professional performances to village halls and communities across Nottinghamshire. Supported by local volunteer promoters, the programme hosts a wide range of touring companies and performers. From theatre to jazz, cabaret to folk music and dance to childrens shows, Village Ventures features a diverse and hugely enjoyable range of performers for all ages. This is where I come in. After saying yes to Judy and Anita, I find myself acting as the local promoter for Village Ventures events held at the new South Scarle Community Centre. But more of that soon. If you want to be added to our mailing list to hear of forthcoming events please contact me at info@southscarlecommunitycentre.com. Facebook & Twitter So what have I been doing recently in the role as local promoter? Well, I was afforded the opportunity to spend a day with a promotions and marketing expert who enlightened me to the joys of Facebook and Twitter. Facebook is a great way of connecting us with each other and sharing our thoughts, photos and videos of village events. Have a look and see the buzz that was created around the Stomp, Scurry and Cream Teas. If you have a Facebook account please head over to www.facebook.com/southscarlecommunitycentre and Like our page. If youre new to Facebook, you can still take a look but will need an account to interact with others. Twitter, in truth, was a bit of a mystery to start with. In the end it is easiest to think of it as a business to business link. I have endeavored to link with as many local businesses who are on Twitter as possible e.g. Grantham Rotary Club, Kelham House Hotel, Double Tree Lincoln as well as many local artists and musicians as I can find. It will build up slowly but should give the Community Centre a better online presence and therefore make it easier to promote events. Again if you have a Twitter account, please follow us @SouthScarleCC. What Next? Look out for work starting on Phase 2 of the Community Centre. You can follow the progress on Facebook. Shortly before work is completed the Community Centre will have its own webpage with details of how to hire the centre, forthcoming events and even our own blog! I hope you are as excited as I am about the opportunities that the new space will provide. Just think we can have theatre, music, dances, quiz nights, beetle drives (one for the old school there), birthday parties................ Let us know what you would like? Email or join the conversation on Facebook. I am happy to help any technophobes where I can. Just stop me when you see me walking the dogs. I may look grumpy but neither me nor the dogs bite!

Bob Goes Back to School!

I went to Swinderby School I left there in 1936.
The voice belonged to Bob Green and he was speaking to me at the South Scarle Scurry as I stood waiting to 'scurry' wearing my Swinderby School Performing Arts T-Shirt. We got talking and this chance conversation resulted in a Bob making a return visit to Swinderby School the following Thursday morning. Swinderby has always welcomed past pupils and everyone was keen to welcome Bob and hear his stories from times past. A special assembly was held and Bob talked to the children about the school in his days there. He was asked lots of questions the children being particularly interested in what happened if you were naughty and details of the outside toilets with no flush! Four of the older pupils were chosen from lots of volunteers to show Bob around the school. He was able to go into the storeroom where the school bell rope still hangs and he told the children that he had rung the bell many times. He was shown the playgrounds and wildlife garden and then enjoyed a school dinner with the children in the hall. It was a lovely, memorable experience for all concerned and we were also delighted to receive Bob's gift to the school of a collection of history books. Bob said afterwards that the visit had given him a real boost and he had enjoyed it very much.

training to keep ahead of their competitors. Joe is now the record holder for Colwick and Newark under 15s Parkruns, but has a nervous time waiting for Ben breathing in his ear! The boys are not the only ones who can claim running achievements as their eldest sister, Megan, competed in a mountain marathon, partnering Jon. The Saunders Lakeland Marathon is an annual event which both Jon and I have participated in previously and is an arduous event involving orienteering skills, racing around the mountains carrying food, shelter, cooking equipment and safety gear to a previously unknown overnight camp. Blisters again featured prominently but Megan came through with a smile and is now planning next year's race with dear old Mum!

After requests from Roy for news about Dan's three peaks challenge, Joe and Ben's running, Jon's climbing and anything else going, I thought I ought to write a few words.

Firstly and most importantly, a big thank you to everyone who is helping Dan raise the funds for his expedition to Iceland. He is over half way there now, and without your Rugby and Rock-climbing generosity he would probably be busking in the High Street. Unfortunately he can't play Megan and Hannah continue to play rugby, a note and his singing is painful so, again, Hannah playing scrum half for Sleaford U18 THANK YOU! girls and Megan starting her first season as captain for Northampton University ladies In May, Dan successfully completed the rugby team. They can be pretty scary when three peaks Challenge, climbing Snowden, they want! Sca Fell Pike and Ben Nevis in under 24 hours, 22 hours and 46 minutes to be exact! Jon does all sorts of mad stuff. On 27 July The blisters on his feet were testament to he is taking part in the Lakeland 50, a quick the determination he had to apply and, for a fifty mile race in the Lakes, training for a while, he professed never to want to see a marathon in November and in between rock mountain summit again. Not a good opinion climbs with his son Conor, daughter for someone off on an expedition and Frankie, Ben or, occasionally, his wife! happily time has softened the memories. Thanks to those who kindly sponsored Dan At the end of our conversation, Roy said to in his challenge; he will be popping round in me " So what do you do?" I think I'd call myself 'Head of Logistics', 'Chief Cheerer the next couple of weeks. Onner', 'Nutrition Planner', 'Head Chauffeur' Record holder and very proud Mummy and wife. I do a bit of cycling/jogging/walking too! Joe and Ben continue to enjoy their running, heading off at 6am or as soon as they get THERESA HOBBS: Corner Farm House back from school for some strenuous 8

MAUREENS TALK ENTERTAINS

I cant remember when I bought my ticket for Maureen Suttons talk on Friday 12 July, but it was a while ago. Ticket sales then had been in single figures and I could tell Richard was slightly concerned that it might not be a complete success. I must confess the details made me wonder what it was going to be about (death and sexuality?!) but Richard said some of the sold tickets were people who had been to see Maureen before, so I reasoned it cant be bad! - Well, single figures it wasnt and bad it most certainly was not! The turn out on Friday was fantastic and Maureens talk was funny and thought provoking. Im sure it made all of us realise how times had changed and just maybe wonder if they were much simpler back then. Her talk revolved around the naivety of years ago. Ive got a visit from Auntie Rosie or shes fallen put me in mind of Les Dawson doing his sketch of the ladies talking over the garden fence. The unspoken words speak volumes! Maureen recounted accounts from numerous local people, sharing their intimate recollections and daring confessions! A number of those recollections revolved around the tunnels in the Tritton Road area of Lincoln. Apparently that was where the action was for the youngsters. I was sat with Connie and asked where the South Scarle tunnels were somewhere between the corner and the church was all she would say. The evening was a great success, finishing with wine and a fantastic spread. As Maureen says We knew nowt .but you cant help thinking werent it better?

Community Space receives 1000 donation

Once again we have received support from Councillors Vincent and Maureen Dobson for our Community Centre Project. They have obtained us a 1000 contribution towards our Phase 2 works from the Councillors' Divisional Fund. You may recall that they supported us in the same way (with a 1000 donation) towards the Phase 1 works. Councillor Maureen Dobson gives us continued support in providing contacts and funding advice. We thank them for, and very much appreciate, their help.

Going Places
Collingham Singers Concert
Sunday 2nd June 2013 The theme of the concert this year was Going Places. The audience went with the singers on a great variety of forms of transport in song, some serious and some very light hearted. There was something for everyone and the audience heartily joined in the sing-a-long. After an hour and a halfs excellent entertainment everyone enjoyed tea and delicious cake (baked by South Scarle Farm Shop). 368 was raised for St Helenas Fabric Fund and the South Scarle Community Centre (split 50/50) and a retiring collection raised 81 for Macmillan Nurses. A very successful and enjoyable afternoon all round. 13

ADRIAN LAWTON

Adrians latest adventures in the world of television!

Since I last wrote something for the Scarlian in June last year, my life in the TV industry has been pretty crazy. With another successful series of Big Brother and its Celebrity other half on Channel 5, I finally got my first promotion in the industry. Moving from being a runner the polite way of being an errand boy, I have gone onto being a researcher. This has given me more involvement in actually making television, being able to have more voice and more creative decisions. North One Television is the company that gave me this break, giving me the chance to impress on Stephen Fry Gadget Man on Channel 4 which came out just before Christmas. Firstly, none of the crew was aware of Stephenss condition or any of the events which have just come out in the press in the past few months. However, working with him you did get the sense that he was extremely tired and Im not surprised after seeing his diary which was 15hour days, 7 days a week. Hes an extremely over worked individual and I have a lot of respect for him. Looking back at this show, I was a part of so many incredible experiences. We built an amphibious taxi which we took for a swim around Canary Wharf and we created a race between Dame Kelly Holmes and Stephen across Trafalgar Square. I was also the host and head chef of a Dinner Party that involved Stephen Fry, Derren Brown, Carol Vorderman and Jo Brand. Among all these incredible experiences, I think the main thing that stood out was teaching Stephen Fry how to do stuff. For a man who knows everything, which he genuinely does, its amazing to be able to tell people that Ive told Stephen how about 50 bits of technology work and he has then taken that information and has told 2.5 million people in the UK and 30 other nations around the world. It was sad to finish on that show just before Christmas as I had so much fun, but I had the fortunate chance to follow half of the team over to an even smaller production company called Attaboy TV where I worked on the biggest Discovery show Wheeler Dealers. These 5 months can be summed up as an experience. For those of you who know, I had the unfortunate task of being given a computer with Windows 8, so basically I was creating a TV show as if it was the 1980s and using the good old Yellow Pages. Fortunately, one of my cars was a 1962 Morris Minor Traveller, and with the amount of wood work that needed to be restored, Dad got a series of phone calls asking what machines I would need to saw, sand and well pretty much any variety of wood tools I might require. As well as my little Morris, I got to help restore a TVR Cerbera which I will forever love, a Ford Pop which I will forever hate, and a Lamborghini Urraco which I will forever remember as the time I thought I had sent a 7 man crew to the house of a Mafia boss. They survived so it was okay in the end. In May I was given the opportunity to return back to my Gadget Man home at North One Television. With Stephen unable to do the second series, we have been given the great opportunity of having Richard Ayoade taking over as Gadget Man. Many of you probably have no idea who he is, but he is slowly becoming an international star. Best known for playing Moss in the IT Crowd on Channel 4, he has also played lead in Hollywood comedy films with Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughan as well as having quite a successful director career with his film Submarine. We start filming the new series

this month, and it will air on Channel 4 in September. Sorry for the bare-faced plug, but it will be a great TV show with some amazing technology in it that you had no idea even existed.
There are even a few gadgets that are coming from local companies, but I best not reveal them yet. And now for my cheesy TV sign off ....... Until next time!

CREAM TEAS
The sun shone and 65 paying visitors enjoyed the cream teas organised by Jane and Roger Davis at their home Morganna on Main Street. The event raised 427 which included proceeds from the rafe run by Mo Tyler and Dave French, and 120.00 from the auction of a Red Arrows aerobatic display pilot teddy bear (donated by Pete Severn (won by Florence Baldwin) and a Lazy Sunday Champagne Breakfast for four (donated by Jane Davis and won by Craig Law). Thanks to the many helpers who prepared and served teas and those who provided rafe prizes.

Lost and Found

Its been a funny old spring and early summer. The Gold Finches continue their population explosion and flocks of twenty plus are clinging to thistle heads and singing in hedgerows. Try and spot these little chaps. They are very pretty. The starlings are amazing and in an evening we are getting our very own murmerations of starlings Do look out for these stunning avian air displays. BUT .........The cuckoo was missing - April and May not a sound. I heard it twice in early June but that was it. Do you still doubt the impact of climate change? Good news all the Ash Trees I know of seem fine no sign of die back. Then we have had a special visitor. I worked for five years close to a release site for Red Kites. I learned to spot their huge wingspan (not unlike a Heron but no dangling legs) the ponderous wing beat (again Heron-like but faster). I also learned to temper my joy. No one was impressed - they were as common as sparrows. Here they are new! Look for the huge wingspan. Other birds will be mobbing them. The forked tail is the final give away. Being carrion feeders they are not a problem yet but they may become so when they start to raid our bins

ALAN SAYS THANKS TO SPECS FINDER!

Id like, through your columns, to say a big thank you to whoever found my glasses and case on the pavement (I think) outside my house late Monday 20th or early Tuesday 21st May and kindly deposited them in my mailbox. We were just leaving the house at 8.30am for a two week holiday, having spent the previous hour in total panic as Id mislaid them, when Linda saw them in the outside mailbox. Im pretty sure they would have slipped out of my pocket whilst getting out of a car the previous night. Mystery person, thank you very much.

I thought I should give you an update on the situation regarding the formation of our village drama group. I think I may have been rather premature when I sent everyone my last note because it seemed that the Open Space project was still quite a long way from completion. The necessary funds were still not in place, but now, as you can read in this edition of The Scarlian, the money required has been realised and work is expected to start soon. Along with other groups in the village, we would-be thespians and entertainers are looking forward to having the facility to expand our social and community activities, and I will be arranging our inaugural meeting sometime in September. I know from the feedback I have had, that you are all as eager as I am to get started, but at the moment, patience must be the order of the day. We will soon have what many villages take for granted - a usable space to accommodate meetings, parties and events.

The response to this idea has been good. If you are still thinking about it there is still time to sponsor a chair for the new Community Centre. A small plaque can be mounted on the chair indicating the giver or in memory of someone. There is a limit of 35 characters on the plaque. The cost of a sponsored chair with an engraved plaque is 50. However the deadline date will be 31St August. If you have mislaid your form or need more information please contact Judy on 892409 or Florence on 892056.
