This module aims to provide students knowledge of marine power transmission systems, including gearbox design, propellers and related performance, shaft system arrangement and vibration; give students knowledge and competence to practise as a marine power transmission system designer, superintendent and ship operator; to learn theoretical calculation, design and practical application of a marine transmission system.

Learning Outcomes On completion of the module the student is expected to be able to: LO1: Understand the engineering principles behind marine power transmission systems, types, components and design criteria. LO2: Understand the basic principles of shaft system arrangement and design, calculation of shafting and bearing load.

Syllabus The module will teach the following: Reduction Gears Types of propeller and their performance Selection of propellers and match with engines Shaft system arrangement Shafting and bearing loads Theory of vibration Shafting vibration

Assessment of Learning Outcomes Criteria

For each of the Module Learning Outcomes the following criteria will be used to make judgements on student learning:

LO1 Understand the engineering principles behind marine power transmission systems, types, components and design criteria. C1: Demonstrate understanding of the terminologies of engine vibration and mathematical models. C2: Be able to understand and assess engine shaft vibrations calculation reports. C3: Be able to understand and interpret the results of vibration calculations. LO2: Understand the basic principles of shaft system arrangement and design, calculation of shafting and bearing load. C1: Be able to describe the various shafting arrangements on ships. C2: Demonstrate understanding of the importance and function of flywheels and clutches in non-geared and geared transmission systems. C3: Be able to carry out calculations concerning shaft and bearing loads for typical marine transmission systems.

The standards set for each criterion per Module Learning Outcome to achieve a pass grade are indicated on the assessment sheet for all assessment.

12 Principles of Assessment and Feedback

(on Learning & Teaching web pages: www.strath.ac.uk/learnteach/teaching/staff/assessfeedback/12principles/ ) Please state briefly how these are incorporated in this module. Students will be encouraged to conduct self-study by the guidance given on the course work instruction The overall assessment of learning will be assessed by a formal exam at end of the teaching The final mark of the module is made of 30% from CW and 70% from the final exam Workload is evenly spread throughout the module.

Indicate which learning outcomes (L01, L02 etc) are to be assessed by exam/coursework/project as required.

Coursework / Submissions deadlines:

Submission of CW in two parts by the end of weeks 5 & 7.

Resit Assessment Procedures:

EXAM PLEASE NOTE: Students need to gain a summative mark of 40% to pass the module. Students who fail the module at the first attempt will be re-examined during the August diet. This re-examination will consist entirely of exam. Recommended Reading

Module Title:

Marine Transmission and Propulsion Systems

Brief Description of Assessment: Coursework consists of calculating the alignment forces of a shaft installation through application of the beam theory. How different design choices influence the alignment forces need to investigated through the mathematical model they created. Finally, the students are required to come up with a solution for an acceptable alignment condition.
