1. Introduction Alternative Energy Promotion Center (AEPC) is a national executing agency of renewable energy programmes and projects in Nepal under Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment. With the mandate of policy and plan formulation, technology innovation, resource mobilization and coordination and quality assurance, the mission of AEPC is to make renewable energy mainstream resource through increased access, contributing for the improved living conditions of people in Nepal. AEPC at present is implementing a National Rural and Renewable Energy Programme (NRREP), a single programme modality for the promotion and dissemination of renewable energy technologies under various sub/components and units. Among them Biogas Subcomponent along with the household plants dwells upon the promotion of community and institutional plants and municipal scale waste to energy biogas plants. 2. Background Nepal has experience of organized domestic biogas technology dissemination since 1992 under the partnership of Government of Nepal and various external development partners in designing, constructing and operating such domestic biogas plants in all over the country. For last two decades Nepal has disseminated mainly the cow dung based fixed dome design biogas plants under the name of GGC 2047 and revised version of it particularly for 2 cum sized biogas plants. Moreover, these models are also considered robust and many countries have taken reference of this design to adapt in their own context. Though the domestic designs of biogas plants are disseminated in the country under the regime of subsidy and also are of eligible for Clean Development Mechanism, these designs cannot cater the needs of the users fully specifically in the conditions described below: The models of GGC 2047 takes considerable time to construct and hinders in quick up scaling of plants. The availability of quality construction materials in remote and rural areas is an issue to construct such plants. As Nepal falls under Monsoon climatic region, it is almost stagnant during the time of monsoon and the masons and other work force are forced to stop their works. In high water table zones, it is very difficult to construct such plants. Hence, AEPC/NREEP is planning to conduct adaptive research on appropriate technologies for biogas. In 2008, a Study Report prepared by the Biogas Technical Audit (BAT) Team also suggested to include new technologies for up scaling biogas in Nepal. In the same time, NRREP suggests to test and disseminate the new biogas technologies. In this regards, AEPC found that among different technological models Fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) Biogas Plant is also one of them and this type of plants are being promoted in China in mass scale. The envisioned advantages of FRP Biogas plants compared to traditional masonry biogas plants include: 1) less time required for installation and shortened period of construction; 2) less demanding for skilled masons and labors and easier for quality control; 3) less gas leakage or better gas tightness over time; 4) better adaptable to long rainy seasons, high groundwater table, and soft foundation soil.
