Thanks to all the buzz that Apple created with their iPhone it may be fun to talk about that for a while, run through a couple of telephony details on how to make phone calls, how the system works and differs from the US-system. In this lesson we talk about rush hour. Not the most popular subject, but hey daily reality in the Netherlands. Some words about the trains and driving around. Heres what you will learn:

In this lesson we will focus on traffic and traffic jams | In deze les richten we ons op het verkeer en files; Like any other country getting around can sometimes be a pain | Net als in andere landen is het soms een ramp om je door het land te verplaatsen During rush hour long traffic jams are more or less common | Gedurende de spits zijn lange files min of meer gewoon For that reason it is smart to plan your trip in the Netherlands | Daarom is het verstandig je reis goed te plannen in Nederland Try to travel after rush hour | Probeer na de spits te reizen Thats after 10 in the morning | Dat is in de ochtend meestal na 10 uur In the afternoon its smart to avoid traffic between four and seven | In de middag kunt tussen vier en zeven het verkeer beter mijden. Laura speaks Dutch #36: A job interview

In this podcast we focus on a job interview. I received an e-mail with that request and must say that is a good idea to touch that subject. We practice a telephone interview with some basics. Of course for the indepth you still have to talk English, but this helps you really making the most important impression: the first! Making that positive really helps! Of course I do stop first to pay respect to all the people in San Diego, that I know so well, that have been affected by the terrible wildfires. That is just horrific. Laura, George & Karen Im thinking of you guys, especially since it came so close and some of your friends lost their houses! Sorry for keeping you waiting a bit, but here is a brand new Laura speaks Dutch. In this episode we talk about speaking English, intimate (gezellig), food and other important stuff. With regard to Your question answered we have a question on the use of the J. Sometimes we say that character (Ja) and sometimes we dont (Wij, Vijf, etc.). After a while I finally had the time to make a new show. Hopefully you like to go back to school. That is also todays subject: school. We talk about the education and how the systems works in general. I hope you like it. Oh yeah: did I say hi to Winslow & Molly already? This is todays lesson:

Education starts generally at the age of four - Het onderwijs begint doorgaans op vierjarige leeftijd; In the Netherlands there is an obligation to go to school - In Nederland is er een verplichting om naar school te gaan; Thats what we call the leerplicht - Dat noemen we de leerplicht; Its starts at the age of five and lasts until youre sixteen - Dat begint op vijfjarige leeftijd en duurt totdat je zestien bent; Between sixteen and eighteen there is a partial obligation to go to school - Tussen zestien en achttien is er een gedeeltelijke leerplicht; Generally children have some kind of daycare before they have to go to school In het algemeen gaan kinderen naar de dagopvang, voordat ze naar school moeten; First children go to the primary school until they are approximately twelve years old - Eerst gaan kinderen naar de basisschool, totdat ze ongeveer twaalf jaar zijn; After that they go to high school - Daarna gaan ze naar de middelbare school; The parents and children can choose from multiple types of education - De ouders en kinderen kunnen kiezen voor meerdere verschillende opleidingen; Based on the skills of the kid the proper school is selected - Afgaande op het kunnen van het kind wordt de juiste school gekozen; Often there is a succeeding education - Vaak is er een vervolg opleiding; That could for instance be university - Dat kan bijvoorbeeld de universiteit zijn; There is one funny thing with our education - Er is iets grappigs met onze opleiding aan de hand; We make a distinction between public and special schools - We maken een onderscheid tussen openbare en bijzondere scholen; The special schools are derived from the verzuiling - De bijzondere scholen zijn een gevolg van de verzuiling; During this period every religion had their own school, broadcast company and newspaper - Tijdens deze periode had iedere religie zijn eigen school, omroep en krant; Quite remarkable - Best wel bijzonder

With thanks to Brian from South Dakota we have a podcast-episode dedicated to riding the bike. Thanks for writing the script and helping make a brand new episode. Brian loves riding the bike and thus the subject was easy for him to pick. The Dutch are known for all the bikes that are present so the lesson does make a lot of sense. This time we start off on a list of favorite places you could visit in the Netherlands and are fun according to me. Of course this list is totally Brenno and not based on anything objective. However I think it is fun and brings back the counting. Besides that you can see what my top ten of fun things in the Netherlands is | Daarnaast weet u meteen wat mijn top tien van leuke dingen in Nederland is Ten | Tien For me the Euromast comes on the 10th place | Op de tiende plaats komt voor mij de Euromast This tower in the habor of Rotterdam is impessive | Deze toren in de haven van Rotterdam is indrukwekkend It gives a view over the city and harbour | Hij geeft uitzicht over de stad en de haven The fun part is that you can actually enter it | Het leuke is dat je er ook echt in kunt Nine | Negen On the 9th spot comes the Scheveningen Pier | Op de negende plaats komt de pier in Scheveningen Situated close to the Hague, this is a fun place to go out | Dicht bij Den Haag gelegen, is dit een leuke plek om uit te gaan During the day as well as the night the view over the sea is gorgeous. | Zowel overdag als s avonds is het uitzicht over de zee prachtig There is also a tower on the pier to have a look over Scheveningen | Ook is er op de pier een toren om over Scheveningen uit te kijken. For interested persons there are shops and a restaurant | Voor wie wil zijn er zelfs winkeltjes en een restaurant But also on the boulevard food is affordable and the place is fun to be | Maar ook op de boulevard is eten betaalbaar en is het prettig vertoeven Eight | Acht On the 8th place comes a amusement park | Op de achtste plaats komt een pretpark That is de Efteling | Dat is de Efteling We talked about that before | Daar hebben we het al eerder over gehad Yet I want to mention it anyway, since it is a fun place | Toch wil ik het noemen, want het is gewoon leuk Nearly every child in the Netherlands has been there | Bijna ieder kind in Nederland is daar namelijk wel geweest Especially the fairy tale forrest is truly classic | Vooral het sprookjesbos is een heuse klassieker

In this episode we are visiting nice places to visit in the Netherlands again. Were still working through my top-10 favorites. At the end you get a tip about the Museum Jaarkaart that might give you an interesting discount for visiting museums. You can acquire it at the larger museums (euro 17.50 for children and the rest pays 35 euros). Also we talk about Amsterdam existing 200 years. Didnt you know? Well dont worry Amsterdam forgot about it too. Maybe they will correct that later next week. This is what you will learn this time:

Laura speaks Dutch #47: Singular or Plural

In this episode Im going to give you people a hard time, because you really will have to work on some grammar. This time we focus on singular that turns in to plural. How does that work? Lets find out. In general the rule for plural means that we add something to the end of the word. That can be -en, -s or even -s. This may be confusing and for most people is. But there is a logic here. It depends on the number of syllables what ending to pick. If we have a word of one syllable we use -en at the end. Foot | Voet Feet | Voeten Head | Hoofd Heads | Hoofden Bag | Tas Bags | Tassen The last one is a little bit different, because the last s has been repeated one time extra. There is a clear reason for this and that is the pronounciation. Tasen sounds differently in Dutch then tassen. So the extra s ensures everything sounds the very same With words that consist of multiple syllables we dont add -en, but we use -s at the end of the word. So: Telephone | Telefoon Telephones | Telefoons Shoulder | Schouder Shoulders | Schouders Suitcase, Bag | Koffer Suitcase, Bags | Koffers

If the words ends on an -i, -a, -o, -u, -y we still will add an -s add the end, but write a single qoute between the word and the plural sign. You cant hear that, but you can write that. Taxi | Taxi -> Taxis Cola | Cola -> Colas (like in an order at a bar) Photo | Foto -> Fotos Of course we do have some strange exceptions: Private Boat | Jacht and Jachten, but also Plezierjacht and Plezierjachten City | Stad becomes Steden

Today is April 1st and it is not possible to deal with a serious subject then. So lets start off with a whole different subject: fairy tales or sprookjes in Dutch. Its a fun subject and off course I throw in as many useful words as I can. Thank you Martin Lewison from New York for bringing this to my attention! So read on and see what you really must know about that. Heres todays lesson:

This time we are talking about stories | Deze keer praten we over verhalen That may sound strange, but really isnt | Dat klinkt misschien vreemd, maar is het niet I got a request to talk about fairy tales | Ik kreeg een verzoek om over sprookjes te praten What should I say about such a subject? | Wat moet ik daar nou over zeggen? According to our definition a fairy tale has several characteristics | Volgens onze definitie heeft een sprookje een aantal kenmerken To begin with it is mostly an epic story | Om te beginnen is het meestal een episch verhaal Many details are surrealistic | Veel details zijn surrealistisch Often main characters dont have a real name | In veel gevallen hebben de hoofdpersonen geen echte naam Many stories have a role for kings, princes, witches and ghosts | Veel verhalen hebben een rol voor koningen, prinsen, heksen en geesten King | Koning Prince | Prins Witch | Heks Ghost | Geest In most cases there is a moral for the children to learn | In de meeste gevallen is er een moraal voor de kinderen om van te leren Well children maybe grown-ups should learn too | Nou kinderen misschien zouden volwassenen ook eens moeten leren Perhaps the authors want this world to become a better place | Misschien willen de auteurs wel dat de wereld beter wordt
