Countries and flags


Level: A1/B2 adaptable to various languages Objectives:
Vocabulary: countries, nationalities, languages, verbs related to travelling Grammar: Present Perfect, adverbs of frequency, articles, adjectives (comparatives, superlatives), making comparisons

Time: 15-20 minutes Materials: - flags of countries all around the world printed in colour; the trainer can also use sticky
notes and colour them in various ways to match the flags - flipchart paper - world map (large size, attached to the flipchart paper)

Description:
The trainer asks the trainee to name a few countries in the target language. Afterwards, using the sticky flags, the trainee should place the flags on the world map, according to the countries they represent. A1/A2 students: The trainer randomly picks the flags and asks the trainee to remind him the name of that specific country. Afterwards, he asks the trainee to pretend he is from that country and to name some specifics of it: food, flowers, drinks etc. The trainee should use such expressions as the Italians are famous for their wines, the French....the Dutch etc. If he has difficulties in naming a nationality, the trainer is the one to name it for him and make him use the word in a whole phrase. The trainer can also challenge the student to compare the shape of the country with an object/animal etc. (e.g.: Romania looks like a fish; Italy looks like a boot etc.) B1/B2 students: The students should make some elaborate phrases about each country that the trainer points at, using comparatives and superlatives. Then they should make a short text (1-2 phrases) about their experience related to that country (e.g.: I have never been to the U.S. but I would like to go there because I saw on TV that they have beautiful natural reservations.)

Time: 15 minutes Materials: - a table containing the above-mentioned heading


- timer - tasty treats (candy, chocolates, juice, peanuts etc.)

Description:
The trainer warns the trainee that he is going to go through the alphabet in his mind. The trainee should say STOP whenever he wants. The trainer says the letter he has reached in his mind and in one minute/ 90 seconds the trainee is supposed to fill-in the table with the name of an object for each category, starting with the given letter. The trainee should include in each name the corresponding article (definite, indefinite or zero). The trainer uses his timer to stop the trainee after 60 seconds/ 90 seconds. The trainer can assign points for each correct answer. After gathering a minimum of 10 points, the trainee can have a tasty treat.

- customer service: acting on the phone (pre-task)

Time: 10 minutes Materials: - flipchart/ whiteboard, markers

Description:
- the trainer writes on the flipchart/ whiteboard a series of emotions/ famous characters/ singers/ political personalities - the trainer gives the participant a poem that the latter is supposed to read, acting it out using different intonations, specific to each character listed on the whiteboard. The intonations have to succeed at a rapid rate, without letting the participant think too much E.g.: pirate/ priest/ opera singer/ rock n roll star/ dictator/ shy young lady/ child/ rapper / a Japanese learning English/ an Italian using English/ someone very happy/ someone who is bored/ someone empathic/ someone whos eating etc.

24. Tim likes...Tim does not like...


Level: A1/C2 adaptable to various languages Objectives: - spelling, warm-up, energizer Time: 10 minutes Materials: - list of riddles/ words Description: The trainer lists what Tim likes and what he does not like. The trainee must find out what
the trick is. The trick is that Tim doesnt like anything with no double letters in the word and likes everything with two of the same consecutive letters ( summer, wheel, roller, scroll etc.) or if the same two letters appear somewhere in the word (telephone, bicycle, television). Other variations: the trainer can create any rule he wishes
