I
n the winter of 2007, the Isle of
Palms community was deeply
divided when nine candidates
campaigned for four City Council
seats. Livability, vacation rentals,
and the definition of community
were fiery issues which instigated
much debate. The Isle of Palms
Community Association (IOPCA),
made up mostly by business
owners, sprang up as a response
to the Isle of Palms Neighborhood
Association (IOPNA) and hired an
infamous political strategist by
the name of Rod Shealy. Shealy
made a name for himself when he
hired an unemployed black man
to run against a white incumbent
in an attempt to help his sister
win an election in 1990. It came
as no surprise, then, that some
sketchy tactics and muckraking
were used during the campaign.
Although the worst of the
campaigning tactics have more or
less been set aside as a dark time
in the island’s history, it is the
money Shealy was given that has
resurrected the brutal campaign.
On March 18 of this year,
the South Carolina State Ethics
Commission ruled that the
IOPCA Committee had been in
violation of three sections of the
Ethics Reform Act after formal
complaints had been filed in
May of 2008. The result was
a written warning and a $100

Isle of Palms is
one Clean Beach

O
n July 1, the Clean
Beaches Council released
its annual list of beaches
which have been officially
certified as clean, healthy and
environmentally well managed.
The announcement was made
as families and beach-lovers
around the country prepared to
flock to the beach for the July
4th weekend, the biggest beach-
going weekend of the year.
This year, beaches in twenty
states and U.S. territories,
including American Samoa,
California, Florida, Hawaii,
Indiana, Maine, Maryland,
Massachusetts, Michigan,
Mississippi, New Jersey, New
York, North Carolina, Oregon,
South Carolina, Texas, U.S.
Virgin Islands, Virginia,
Washington and Wisconsin, are
on the list. But only two beaches
in South Carolina were certified
as a Clean Beach: Surfside
Beach in Myrtle Beach and the
Isle of Palms.
“Because of the recession,
the summer travel season is
expected to be lighter than it has
been in recent years, according to
the Travel Industry Association
of America, but still, beaches
remain one of the most popular
destinations,” stated Walter
McLeod, President of the Clean
Beaches Council. “Even though
millions of Americans spend
time at beaches, there is still no
easy way to determine which are
clean and well managed. We hope
our program increases public
awareness of our individual
responsibility to keep beaches
clean and safe.”
The Blue Wave is the first
environmental certification
program for beaches in the U.S.
Now in its tenth year, the program
has been called the “LEEDS”
certification for beaches. To
become certified, beaches adhere
to best management practices
in the following areas: water
quality, beach and intertidal
conditions, hazards/safety,
services, habitat conservation,
erosion management, public
information and education.
Seven tips for
family beach safety*
1. Keep kids within arms
reach (especially in the sea,
but also on land).
2. Don’t dive in (Two thirds
of catastrophic neck/head/
spinal injuries occur in the
ocean and sea).
3. Knee deep is too deep
(strong winds, waves and
currents create dangerous
rip currents that can sweep a
child out to sea).
4. Know before you go (swim
near a lifeguard - know your
flags; red means stop/green
means go).
5. Take frequent breaks
(every hour take a sun,
bathroom, or water break).
6. Go with the wind (children
tend to take the course of least
resistance - follow the wind to
find your lost kid).
7. Look but don’t touch
(call local authorities to help
injured/stranded sea life).

On the roads again
Council discussed the intersec-
tion of Palm Boulevard and 41st
Street. Mayor Cronin stated that
he’s arranged to regularly meet
with the South Carolina Depart-
ment of Transportation and,
at the very least, discuss per-
manently closing off the end of
Cameron Blvd. However, plans
for a roundabout will have to
wait, as the SCDOT didn’t take
into account closing Cameron
Blvd. in their first assessment.
Council member Bergwerf
noted that the school bus com-
pany operating on the island
needs to be updated about the
developments around 41st and
Palm. Bus drivers had been
stopping the bus to move the
barricades at Cameron on the
way to their stops.
Mayor Cronin informed the
Council that he had met with
Mayor Smith of Mount Pleas-
ant to discuss the bottleneck on
the IOP Connector between the
intersections at Rifle Range Road
and Highway 17. While Mount
Pleasant expressed interest in
expanding that stretch of road,
due to funding issues, initial
steps won’t be taken until next
year.
Concerned citizens
Isle of Palms resident Diane Oto-
rik expressed her appreciation
for Town Council’s expedient
response concerning the beach
ordinance in the Windjammer
section of Front Beach. She also
thanked the Council for creating
a prosperous environment for
businesses on the island.

requested sand fencing for the
beach directly opposite his house
at 104 Grand Pavilion. He said
there was an immediate need for
accelerated dune renewal within
the high density area and was
under the impression that sand
fencing was budgeted for within

City Administrator Tucker ex-
plained that Motorola would
be shipping a signal-boosting
device from Texas to place on the
island for the two weeks around
the Fourth of July. The device,
known as a C.O.W, may be the
first step in alleviating long
standing communication prob-
lems on the island, although it
will largely depend upon its loca-
tion. For Motorola, the problem
is the island’s existing inferior
communication infrastructure.
Building a new one from the
ground up would be far easier,
but the lack of available land is
making site selection difficult.
New Public Safety building
Dave Johnson of Cole & Rus-
sell presented the Council with
a timeline for the recently com-
pleted Public Safety building.
As of July 6, the building will be
officially inspected and certified,
after which move-in may begin.
July 10 marks the site comple-
tion date with the construction
company, Mashburn.

budget for 2010 concerning a
project with CARTA to provide
the island with public transpor-
tation. Council also approved
amendments to an ordinance
giving the Charleston County
Parks and Recreation Depart-
ment clarified authority in swim
zones. They agreed to extend the
definition of abandoned prop-
erty to include volleyball poles.
Council voted and approved giv-
ing a minimal payment of $10 to
Dewees Island for the new bulk-

cally extends into their waters.

administrative fee. Reactions to the result are
mixed.
“While the Isle of Palms Neighborhood
Association did not initiate the complaint,
we are satisfied that the IOPCA’s actions
were judged to be illegal by the State Ethics
Commission; but we are disappointed that
the punishment was minimal. That the
state recognizes that the IOPCA’s actions
were illegal is laudable but falls short,” says
Catherine Malloy, President of the Isle of Palms
Neighborhood Association, whose candidates
were the target of the IOPCA. “Unfortunately,
it does nothing for our organization and our
community which continues to experience
the fallout from the IOPCA’s duplicity.”
The IOPCA Committee worked to influence
the 2007 election by running negative ads
against candidates Jane McMackin, Brian
Duffy, Ralph Piening, and Mike Loftus, all of
whom were supported by the Neighborhood
Association. One ad depicted McMackin as a
puppet master controlling Duffy, Piening, and
Loftus. Larry Pierson, a local real estate agent
and the IOPCA’s president at the time, said
that “humor” was being used in their mailings.
Other tactics included misrepresenting the
State’s Republican Party and taking political
responsibility for Governor Mark Sanford’s
visit to the island. The State’s Republican
Party denounced the tactics and Sanford’s
office declared that the Governor had not
come on behalf of any political group. While
these tactics might have been considered
shameful by some, it was the mishandling of
a relatively small amount of money that got
the group in trouble.
The Ethics Commission stated that Shealy
deposited a $5000 check from the IOPCA for
the Committee’s campaign into his personal
account and used it for flyers, road signs,
and mailings. However, Shealy did not
keep a record of how the money was spent.
Furthermore, he said it would be impossible to
dissect his account as he was simultaneously
running other campaigns and that the
expenditures could have been for multiple
clients. The Ethics Reform Act requires that
a detailed report of campaign expenditures
be kept. There is also a limitation of $3500
that an organization can accept from a single
entity in a calendar year.
Mel Miles was a participating member of
the IOPCA before it disbanded about a year
ago. Miles says that they did not purposely
break any laws and would not have given
more than $3500 if they had known it was
wrong. Shealy, he said, did not give them any
indication that the $5000 contribution was
inappropriate.
“We didn’t have experience in setting this
up,” Miles said. He says that the Commission
chalked the violations up to an “administrative
error”, which would explain the relatively
minor fine. It was Shealy who was responsible
for filing with the Ethics Commission.
Indeed, it is strange that a campaign veteran
like Shealy, who is so well versed in political
campaigns, would be unaware of the $3500
limitation or the fact that he needed to keep
track of campaign spending. Miles contends
that they trusted Shealy to keep things in
order.
If indeed the violations were the results
of misplaced trust and/or the mistake of a
political strategist, then the minor punishment
seems to fit the crime as it was the IOPCA
who received the judgment and not Shealy.
However, it may seem a bit anti-climactic
when weighted against the impacts of the
campaign on the community.
“When a group hires someone who is
known to have broken the law and has been
convicted of a federal election law violation
to influence the outcome of a local election,
they also bear responsibility for the negative
consequences,” Malloy says. “[The IOPCA] did
not have the welfare of the IOP community
at heart. In fact, their actions were meant to
drive the residents away.” She says that the
emotional remnants of the IOPCA’s decision
to enlist Shealy remain with many residents
to this day.
Mike Loftus, one of three candidates who
survived the 2007 assault, has not forgotten
the damage left by the campaign.
“Rod Shealy and the IOPCA headed by Larry
Pierson unfairly subjected the voters of Isle of
Palms to wave after wave of misinformation
and in many cases pure lies, in order to

As a full time resident of Isle of Palms, I
am frustrated with the lack of respect that
dog owners have about obeying the local
leash law on the beach.
Already, you’re probably thinking that
I am not a dog lover, and someone who
shies away when a dog approaches. Quite
the contrary! I just see it from another
perspective. We all, and our dogs, love
going to the beach, especially during the
morning time before it gets too hot. I am
one of those people who love’s bringing my
dog to the beach, and I love seeing other
people and their dogs enjoying a morning
beach excursion as well. BUT PLEASE
RESPECT THE LEASH LAW!
Let me explain the side that most dog
owners don’t understand. Some dogs,
including mine, do not get along so well
with other dogs. When your “friendly”
dog comes charging up to my dog to say
"hi", the reaction from my dog is not so
pretty. I know that most dogs like to travel
around and say "hi" to each other. But the
problem is that even though your dog might
be the friendliest dog in the world, some,
unfortunately, are not.
The common thought from most dog
owners is, “My dog is the sweetest, friendliest
dog ever, they’re ok to be off the leash.” You
have to think beyond that. Others of us
have been dealt a little tougher hand to deal
with. My dog was a rescue dog, and is NOT
a breed that most people think of when they
think about a “mean” dog. She is beautiful,
kind of goofy looking sometimes, and if you
saw or met her, you would think she is the
sweetest dog ever. She is very caring and
loving with all people, small kids, and even
has a couple of other dog friends. I love
her more than anything and wouldn’t give
her up for the world. But still, when an
unfamiliar dog approaches, she does not
have the social skills to “play nice”.
It’s a problem that I know other people
deal with as well. Its not that we have
adopted a dog that was bred for fighting

advance their candidates,” he said. “I firmly
believe any candidate who uses Rod Shealy
should be questioned by the voters.”
Miles says that the Ethics Commission’s
result is not worthy of being in the news and will
only work to further divide a community that
needs to be united. While the Neighborhood
Association was not responsible for filing the
complaint which launched the investigation,
Miles says that the “other side” was only
trying to “stir things up” with a complaint in
the first place.
“I guarantee that we [IOPCA] could’ve filed
something if we looked in the fine print,”
Miles said. Any discussion on the matter only
works to keep the community fighting over
past issues instead of being united, he adds.
But perhaps there can be some new bridges
built over the divides, and the Commission’s
wrist-slapping decision will be the ribbon
cutting ceremony symbolizing a brighter day,
where fire tempered emotions are set aside and
residents can see each other as neighbors.

hoping for the best. Its something that we
as dog owners have no control over, and all
we can do is keep working with them and
try to share the same enjoyments of living
in such a beautiful place as all the other
dogs and owners around here. We have
just as much right to walks and playtime on
the beach as everyone else. But it makes it
very difficult and sometimes impossible to
do this when other dogs are running free.
Please be considerate and think about
being in my shoes next time you and your
dog are on the beach. Thank you.

Dear editor:
I wanted to clarify that my absence from
the June Town Council meeting was due to
a long-standing conflicting obligation with
my leadership position with the Obesity
Society, that I had notified the Mayor and
Council more than a month prior that I
would have to miss it, and that I also sent
them an e-mail apologizing for my absence
which I think was read at the meeting.
  The mention in the Island Eye twice
that I was absent, without further
explanation, may have inaccurately (if
inadvertently) conveyed the idea that I’d
just ignored the meeting or abandoned
my responsibilities.   Nothing could have
been further from the truth; I take my
responsibilities on Council very seriously,
more than ever, and certainly would not
have missed my swearing-in without a
compelling reason.

Music at Fort Moultrie Summer events

he Poe Library is rocking with loads of fun activities this summer.
Recently, the library hosted Miss Matilda, a sweetgrass basket
artisan, who demonstrated how to make simple sweetgrass
baskets. The Plantation Singers also visited the Poe, sharing some
of their favorite Lowcountry and plantation songs. Upcoming events
include Turtle Day with Mary Pringle on July 14, Not a Box: box
puppets on July 21, Produce the
Perfect Pet on July 28 and the “Say So
Long” Celebration on July 30.

last week of June. On their first full day at the beach, an animal
control officer pulled a “wayward gator” from the ocean next to the IOP
pier. Darrah, who snapped the picture of the alligator retrieval, said
it was quite exciting. “Our two week vacation continued,” she smiled,
“but the gator’s trip was cut a little short.”

Beach Run tackles traffic troubles

he 2009 Isle of Palms
Beach Run will take place
Saturday, July 18, on
the Front Beach behind the
Windjammer on the Isle of Palms.
Adult competitors can enter in
the following divisions: four mile
run or four mile walk. The race
begins at 8am. Youth fun runs
start at 9am. Registration is
$15 for the run/walk and $7 for
the youth fun runs. Registration
opens at 6:30am the day of the
race. The first 200 contestants
to register are guaranteed a

his summer has brought
more than just heat to
the Isle of Palms. The
swelling number of beachgoers
understandably creates more
traffic, but delays in getting on and
off the IOP Connector have been
exceptionally awful; noticeably
between the intersections at Rifle
Range Rd. and Hungryneck Blvd.
This bumper to bumper waiting
game has raised some concerns
with residents and City Council
is hard at work on finding a
solution.
“My concern is the safety
issue,” said Council member
Mike Loftus, who’s aware of the
inconvenience of the traffic, but
is more concerned about what it
could mean in an emergency. “If
public safety officials need to get
on or off the island at a peak time
when a lot of people are leaving
the beach, it could become a
significant safety problem,” Loftus
said.
As the height of hurricane
season approaches his concerns
are certainly grounded, but plans
to expand the congested area of
the Connector to four lanes will
likely have to wait until next year.
Though citizens would certainly
prefer otherwise, coordinating
a project like this with Mount
Pleasant and the South Carolina
Department of Transportation
(SCDOT) typically takes a long
time. Mayor Cronin recently
met with Mayor Smith of Mount
Pleasant to discuss a possible
future lane expansion at the
trouble intersections.
“They [Mount Pleasant] have
a lot more traffic problems than
just the Connector, but they do
realize that the road will ultimately
need to be widened to handle the
flow. It hasn’t reached the point
of actual design or funding, so
we’re trying to encourage them to
move it higher up on their list of

priorities,” Cronin said. “I and the
Council will stay on this because
it’s a problem that’s just going to
grow over time.”
Mayor Cronin and the Council
also have another front on the
traffic battle. The future of the
intersection at Palm Boulevard
and 41st Avenue has been up in
the air since it was turned to a
three-way stop last fall. Several
ideas were floated since then,
including a stoplight or even
reverting back to a two-way stop.
What seems certain is that the
end of Cameron Street will be
permanently closed. It’s added to
the confusion at the intersection
and residents of Cameron seem
to be pleased with the change.
“We’ve had some residents
come before the Public Safety
Committee and actually say they
like it closed off. They were getting
a lot of bypass traffic down the
street, but with it closed off,
the traffic cleaned up and the
residents feel better about it,”
Mayor Cronin said. He’ll pursue
formally closing off the street
with the SCDOT, as well as
explore the possibility of building
a roundabout in place of the
intersection, although that may
prove to be a tricky operation.
Space is at a premium and the
minimum requirements to build
a roundabout might include
condemning property.
“I expect as a minimum we’ll
finalize closing off Cameron after
the Department of Transportation
gets back to us and then proceed
making permanent the two stop
signs on 41st Avenue, to the
marina and from the marina, so
we can clean up that intersection,”
Cronin said.
Given the nature of decision
making at the DOT, (something
like the connector at five on a
Saturday afternoon), Isle of Palms
will just have to wait and see.

Carolina and went on a botany
expedition to the Blue Ridge
of Virginia. As you know, in
setting off on such travels,
there is a considerable change
in elevation and temperature.
It was a warm July even in
western Virginia, but nothing
like the steamy confines
of my beloved hometown,
nestled on the banks of the
mighty Congaree. In fact,
July evenings in Rockingham
County were downright cool;
even chilly at dawn. So there
I was, boots and all, ready
to go early in the morning,
setting off from the eastern
end of the lovely town of
Buena Vista. Driving east
toward the Parkway was an
unworldly experience: the
farther and higher I went, the
harder it was to see due to the
blanket of fog. At the top of the
mountain visibility was next
to nothing, so I was inclined
to wait. Slowly the sun came
up and it took about an hour
for the fog to lift. This is one
of the plants I saw:

he fashion bug seems to
have bitten Charleston
good and hard.  In between
Charleston’s annual fashion
flagship, Charleston Fashion
Week, a plethora of consignment
boutiques and restaurants are
hosting fashion shows all over
town to keep the style vibe alive.
It seems there will be a place to
observe, evaluate, snub, sponge or
scoff the latest trends throughout
the year in our quaint southern
city.
Charleston Fashion Week
(CFW) certainly came alive this
year, holding over 30 fashion
shows in one week despite the
economy and boasting their
strongest turnout ever.  CFW
has quickly gained a remarkable
level of both local and national
recognition, and Ayoka Lewis is
the visionary behind it all.  Ayoka
also ensured that CFW will not
celebrate fashion in vain in the
south: both MUSC’s Children’s
Hospital and the work-clothes-
for-women-in-need charity, Dress
for Success, benefited from the
proceeds.
This year, vibrant island-
inspired colors and floral prints
paired with accessories, such
as thong sandals and aviator
sunglasses, were staples in both
the local and national label runway
shows.  An interesting twist on
the “southern gentleman” came
in the form of the two handsome
young men in three piece suits,
sunglasses and sneakers,
dutifully following a model down
the runway and back, carrying

Not so far flung Floyd
D
o you know any “board people”? You
probably do. They are those lucky
few who, when given a well-balanced,
streamlined slip of timber (surfboard,
snowboard, skateboard, kiteboard, windsurf
board, ironing board, etc.), they move with
such grace and skill that the rest of us are left
slack jawed, wide eyed and perhaps a little
jealous. Dan Floyd is one of these gifted few,
but he’s not the type to brag. Floyd runs a
small surf shop on the Isle of Palms, loves his
family and will gladly, in his words, “share
the stoke” with you any day.
Floyd’s been in the water on a board in some
form or another for the greater part of his life,
traveling all over the Carolina coasts, Florida,
Mexico, Tahiti, Hawaii and the Caribbean.
A few months ago he won Best Wave in a
kiteboarding contest in Florida, beating other
boarders half his age and winning a new
surfboard. It’s displayed in his shop, OliNah,
located at 1204 Palm Boulevard.
Although the name of Floyd’s shop has a
distinctively exotic quality, it isn’t exactly a
real word in any language. The name of the
shop is derived from his daughters’ names,
Olivia and Hannah. The older of the two,
Hannah, recently placed second in a surf
contest at the age of seven.

traveling around the world participating in

native, Floyd graduated from the College
of Charleston and worked for a time doing
geological studies for an environmental firm.
However, his passion eventually took him
away from the rocks and into the surf. And

when he settled down, he made sure it was to
do something he loved.
“If I can get this thing [OliNah] to pay it’s
bills and pay for a little school and daycare
and kids’ stuff, that’s all I could hope for. I
feel like I get much more of a reward from
genuinely helping people enjoy the ocean,”
Floyd says.
Of course, Charleston’s prime kiteboarding
conditions offered some draw for Floyd.
Moderate wind and relatively mild winter
temperatures are perfect for kiteboarders
and Charleston’s barrier islands offer miles
of great waves. If stomping nosegrabs twenty
feet above the water doesn’t sound like your
style, Floyd’s newest interest might be the
most accessible to amateurs, but no less fun.
Paddleboarding uses a large board that can
be moved through the water via hands or a
paddle. As a sport, it’s existed for almost a
century in the U.S. and has enjoyed renewed
popularity in recent years as a great work out.
Check one out at OliNah and see if it’s right
for you, but remember; the ocean has a funny
way of holding on to people.
“It has pretty much dictated where I’ve
worked my whole life,” Floyd admits, “but it’s
also helped me get everywhere I’ve gone and
given me some great experiences.”

The bucket that rescued a turtle
D
uring the night on June 26, a female
Loggerhead turtle crawled over the
dunes near the Isle of Palms County
Park, looking for a place to lay her eggs.
Turtle Team members Glenn Rhodes and Lois
Klein found only one set of tracks leading into
the dunes, but no tracks coming back out.
They reported this and the rest of the team
arrived to investigate. After searching in the
deep grass and wildflowers around the very
old post-Hurricane Hugo sand fencing, we
found a very exhausted 300 lb. turtle who
had not been able to find her way back out
to the beach. She had ended up under the
boardwalk where the showers for the park are
located. When your head is only a few inches
off the ground and your eyes are meant to
focus underwater, seeing the ocean is not
easy!
We called the Isle of Palms Police and asked
for some assistance from the Fire Department
in carrying the heavy turtle over three rows of
dunes and back to the beach. While we were
waiting for the firemen to arrive and lift her,
Nicholas Johannes made several trips to the
water with a large bucket. He poured ocean
water over the Loggerhead’s head and back
to keep her from becoming dehydrated. This
either perked her up or alarmed her because
she suddenly started to crawl. She kept going
and by the time helped arrived, she was just
topping the primary dune closest to the ocean
and crawled onto the sandy beach.
From there on it was easy because now she
was on the downward slope and the ocean was

the future is to create a flexible

Facts about the horn toad

Horned toads
• The horn toad is not actually a toad or a
frog. It is a lizard and a member of the ge-
nus Phrynosomatidae.

S
ullivan’s resident Leo Fetter was
surprised to find this little guy hanging
out around the base of the Sullivan’s
Island lighthouse during the last weekend of
June. According to Fetter, “horn toads” have
not been seen on the island since Hurricane
Hugo hit in 1989. “They used to be all over
the place,” said Fetter. “But it’s great to see
them out here again.”
• There are 14 species of horned lizards in
North America, eight of which are native to
the United States.
• At least four species of horn toads are able
to squirt blood from their eye as a defense
mechanism against predators.
• Horn toads love to eat harvester ants, but
will occasionally munch on grasshoppers,
beetles, termites, and other small insects.
• Some Native American peoples regarded
horned lizards as sacred.
• The horned lizard is the state reptile of both
Texas and Wyoming.

P
inckney Island National
Wildlife Refuge is a wonderful
place to visit year round, but I
particularly enjoy the springtime and
early summer. Most species of birds
and animals are busy with domestic
responsibilities such as nest building
and incubation, and then feeding and
child rearing. Because of the great
job the refuge does maintaining a
diverse habitat, Bluebirds and other
songbirds are plentiful. I cannot recall
seeing a Bluebird house unoccupied.
Knowing this, I went to find one that
had a nearby perch actively being
used on a regular basis. Before the
birds enter their house or leave the
area, they normally go to their favorite
perch. I picked a likely house with
a perch in good light and waited for
the birds to appear, then I made slow
but deliberate movements toward
the perch until I was in range with a
300mm lens. A good portrait of a single
bird is a success, but a couples shot,
without disturbing their behavior,
made my day.
Spring/early summer is a great
time of year for avian photography on
the Carolina Coast, with the shorebird
and neotropic migrants passing
through, including an impressive
assortment of birds of prey that pass
through or stay for all or part of the
summer. So much is happening at the
same time it is often difficult to decide
what to focus on. Since the neotropics
are only here for the spring and part
of the summer season, it’s hard not
to dedicate a chunk of time observing
them. Check in with your local pros,
park guides, and employees with
theDepartment of Natural Resources
for tips and guidance, then make a
plan, pack your gear, your sunscreen
and bug juice and go after it.

the car and jumping out in time to capture a nice rainbow or the perfect
sunset, but your percentages of getting quality images of wildlife behavior will

The birth of rock and roll in Charleston

is celebrating its 70th
anniversary this year.

from fancy studios off I-526,
but I remember when one of the

or eight years ago, I began to

Quincy, an institution of
Charleston radio since 1981,
began to scour the ether for

was humbled to find my columns
