15 inspiring ambigram logos

An ambigram, also sometimes known as an inversion, or flipscript, is a graphical figure that spells out one or more words not only as presented, but also in another direction or orientation (from Wikipedia). Here follows 15 inspiring examples, with some further ambigram resources. Aerosmith

John Langdon designed this logo for Aerosmith. Created to be a gift from Dan Brown to Stephen Tyler. I was able to retain the look of Aerosmiths long-standing logo, while turning it into a rotational ambigram. John has written some great tips for those wanting to create their own ambigrams, and Ive referenced his website in the resources below. Wachovia

Not quite an ambigram, and Im not sure what youd call it, but I found it interesting nonetheless for Truce Vodka, by Agency26, who also created the Balance ambigram shown previously. Travel For those travel-loving logo designers out there, how about this ambigram travel mug?

I found this beautiful labyrinth design in the ambigram Flickr pool. Logo for Ambigram

Youll notice this one isnt quite like the others. Its a logo for the Ambigram advertising agency, created by Pentagram (more info on Pentagrams blog). I think they missed a trick by not actually allowing for logo rotation. Okay, so it may not have been as legible, but you only need to visit the Wikipedia page on ambigrams for an example of how effective it couldve been. Happy holidays

A fitting way to wrap-up this post, by wishing you all a very happy holiday period with this holidays ambigram from npgraphicdesign.

1. Kristen One of my faves is the 20th anniversary logo for The Princess Bride. http://blog.wired.com/photos/uncategorized/2007/10/03/princessbride454_screen.jpg Kristens last blog postGreat Post at Write To Done Today Dec 19th, 2008 2. Alec Rios Thanks for the link, David. I hadnt seen the Truce one before, but I love the style. A while back, I made a similar ambigram using the negative space to create a new word when rotated 180 degrees. Really cool effect. Alec Rioss last blog postAmbigram of My Name - Alec Rios Dec 19th, 2008 3. George - LogoDesign.org Theyre all very cool, although the only one that I like as a logo is the New Man logo. Quite a few of the others seem to be more art than something that should be used in a commercial application, simply because I was getting a headache looking at them, especially the Aerosmith one. Nice list! Dec 19th, 2008 4. Jaime Guadagni great post! here are a couple ambigrams I did a about a year ago. found on http://blogcooler.blogspot.com/2008/12/ambigrams.html Dec 19th, 2008 5. penflare one word: breathtaking. absolutely brilliant logos, all amazing - thanks so much for sharing david.. i think my favorite is either ann or aerosmith thanks! penflares last blog postHockey Team Logo Dec 19th, 2008 6. Alex Charchar Nice post :) I once spent a week or so working on an ambigram (that i ended up using on a business card for some fun and to run a press, not for a legit use really) and it was one of the most challenging but rewarding pieces of work Ive ever spent my time on.. its not too hard to get a grasp of the concept and the kind of shapes thatll work, its in the fine tuning, over and over, that things get interesting.. especially as it wasnt the same word both ways (it was create/beauty)..

I agree with George that you wouldnt really use any of these in a commercial application, but I think in designing one you learn a lot about letterforms and how to compress an idea to its elegant core something that comes in handy when working with logos? Nice post David :) Alex Charchars last blog postThe Typographic Scale Dec 19th, 2008 7. Roy Smith Another quality post, David. My favourites are edge, ann, blacksmith and truce. Dec 19th, 2008 8. Great addition, Kristen. I wasnt familiar with it. Alec, Have you tested Flipscript? Its superb how it combines two words into one, with rotation showing the difference. George, Raymond Loewy was a fantastic designer, and his New Man logo is certainly iconic. I agree that the Aerosmith option wouldnt be ideal for brand identity. It does take a close look to decifer the letters. Jaime, Thanks for the kind mention, and for sharing a couple of your own ambigrams. I hope to experiment with my own designs quite soon. Sean, Youre more than welcome, my friend. Alex, From my short experience, I think you sum it up well with the fine tuning term. Thanks. Im pretty sure George doesnt think all these ambigrams are unsuitable for commercial use. I find the following ones particularly effective: Nine Inch Nails, ABBA, Edge, Ann, Delorean, New Man. Roy, Glad you think so. Pablo, Eric, Superb additions. Thanks for commenting.

Al Woods Brilliant!! Never even knew that about the Aerosmith logo. 20. Scott Kim Nice collection, David. Ive seen some of them, but some are new. Im nuts about the Labyrinth ambigram - clever, appropriate, interesting style that arises naturally out of the problem. I design both logos and ambigrams (see http://scottkim.com/graphicdesign), and agree that ambigrams rarely make good logos, mostly cuz theyre usually too hard to read. The few successful ambigram logos have been for clients for whom ambigrams were appropriate: artists, magicians and puzzle makers. My last name, however, works well as an ambigram. Like Michel, my personal logo is an ambigramsee my site http://scottkim.com. Dec 19th, 2008 21. Alec Rios David, I hadnt seen Flipscript before but it produces some quality designs and quickly. Of course, its not perfect. It told me no design was possible for a design Ive already accomplished. :) Alec Rioss last blog postAmbigram of My Name - Alec Rios Dec 19th, 2008 22. That Aerosmith design has always been one of my favorites. Alec, You tried an ambigram that you know is possible, but it didnt work on FlipScript.com and you didnt WRITE to us? Hey! Dec 20th, 2008 26. Andrew Kelsall The Truce Vodka Ambigram is quite inspiring. I wonder how the whole concept/thinking behind it came about. Thanks very much for everyones kind comments. A web server issue has meant my last reply to you all was lost during a necessary backup restoration. Please accept my apologies if you have received comment updates twice, and Im very glad you enjoyed the ambigram feature. Dec 21st, 2008 29. rinkon Hi! I loved this ambigram collection. I like the idea of being able to read the same word in different directions. I designed this logo for a music band using an ambigram: I would love to hear your comments! http://www.rinkon.com.mx/blog/archivos/fotos/20.jpg Thanks in advance! Dec 22nd, 2008 30. Jim MacLeod That variation on the Aerosmith logo is great. Maybe its because Im familiar with their classic logo, but I find this ambigram to be one of the most legible. A lot of these are obviously ambigrams. I think the most successful ambigrams are the ones that dont scream that they work both ways. If the logo works on its own, and THEN you find out that it also works upside down, I find that to be a much more successful logo. Dec 22nd, 2008 31. Roy leban The TRUCE ambigram is a rotated figure/ground ambigram. Most figure/ground ambigrams have two different words (e.g., true/false), so this one is pretty unusual. Amanda Vlahakis I think Edge is really good, amazing that its so easy to read still as well. I think Aerosmith have the benefit of global familiarity with the word to allow them to get away with something that otherwise would be pretty difficult to read. Not keen on Labyrinth at all, I think its pretty scruffy and hard to read and whilst the concept is good the execution just hasnt worked very well in practice. I think its dreadfully impractical also. Dec 28th, 2008 41. Anna Wow, what a cool list!! rinkon, Love the clip logo. Very adaptable. Jim, You make a good point about Aerosmith. Those unfamiliar with the band will undoubtedly find the ambigram less legible. Simon, I mentioned Tinas swissmiss logo here (at the foot of the post), and agree that its a great redesign. brian, Thanks for the clarification. I enjoyed browsing your Agency26 website, and appreciate you dropping by. Daniel, Indeed, the format design is an interesting mirror-image. Steve, If the magazines survival was in tune with the strength of the logo, Im sure theyd be selling a lot of copies. Nice job. Kosal, Ill update the post, cheers. Roy, Your game piqued my curiosity. Good on you Puzzlemaster. Amanda, I agree how the labyrinth logo isnt practical. I see it being more effective as a promotional piece, such as a poster or flyer. Too enjoyable to pass up on though (very fond of the idea). Kevin, xpedx is a great example. Its one of those where the letters are perfectly ordered for ambigram use. Thanks for linking to it.

Thanks very much for the additional suggestions. Roy, The ABBA and NIN logos are mirror-image ambigrams, meaning each side (left and right) is a reflection of the other.

Mar 2nd, 2009 68. Roy Leban David, I dont agree that the ABBA and NIN logos are ambigrams. They are not properly readable either way because they each have a backwards letter. Would you consider UR an ambigram of RUR? I wouldnt that first R is a Russian YA, not an R! If that counts, heres another one: the mirror image ambigram ARI/IA. One way, the R is forwards and the other way its backwards, but, hey, were allowing backwards letters! Certainly, some ambigrams have hard to read letters, but, to be a real ambigram, you cant have letters that nobody would say is a valid instance of the letter. These logos are certainly ambigram-like or ambigram-inspired. I created a new section in the Wikipedia Ambigram page to showcase logos like this. -Roy.
