Napoleon In and Out of France 1793-1815

Napoleon Bonaparte was born in Corsica, a small French island in the Mediterranean.
He came from a middleclass background. At age nine, Napoleon was sent to France to
receive a military education. At the age of twenty, Napoleon became a Lieutenant
fighting against the French King Louis XVI in the
French Revolution.
In the army, Napoleon rose the ranks very quickly.
He successfully led at the age of twenty French
troops against British soldiers trying to capture a
French port in France. Napoleons next military
assignment led him to present-day northern Italy,
where he fought Austrian troops. Outnumbered 3:1,
Napoleon pulled an upset and defeated the
Austrians. Napoleon, now a general, attempted to
claim more glory by capturing India from Britain.
However, Napoleon greatly misjudged the mission, and suffered heavy loses. According
to sources, Napoleon paid surviving officers money to keep the loss quite. Although
Napoleon failed, he managed to increase the territories belonging to France.

candidate to become ruler of France? Why or why not? (Give two reasons)

In 1800, Napoleon ran for election. He won three straight years by a landslide. Believing
he had support from the French people, he named himself emperor of France, and
declared that he was elected for life. Napoleon, although initially appearing to be another
Louis, accepted the Declaration of Rights of Man. This declaration gave rights to
members of the peasant population that they never had any rights before. He also fully
supported removing the three-estate system. Napoleon did place a heavy tax on the
people. However, he made the tax proportionate (fair). Another words, the more money

you had, the more tax you would pay. The less money you have, the less tax you would
pay.
Napoleon used the tax money to first hire a new
security force. This security force was to patrol
the streets, protect the townspeople, keep order,
and provide relief in cases of emergency. He
used tax money to buy plots of land, and made
the land into farms with the hopes of increasing
food output. To work the farms, he gave peasants
for priority on jobs. Napoleon also rebuilt
roads, and created schools that emphasized
science and military training. Under Napoleon,
jobs increased by 23%.

Outside of France, Napoleon failed to solve differences with the Pope. He told the Pope
in a speech Only one person can have a crown, and Im it. Although the Pope and
Napoleon had heated tension, Napoleon did allow freedom of religion to all, including
Catholics. Additionally, Napoleon had a thirst for power, and the dream of making
France the biggest empire ever to exist. Napoleon read numerous books from great
generals in history, and used his new knowledge to create a new battle plan every time.
He learned from previous generals successes and failures. He captured parts of Germany
and Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands. He nearly tripled the size of France. After capturing
these countries, Napoleon put his relatives on the throne of that conquered country.
Using his connections, he brought into France much needs supplies, food, and military
materials. In France, people filled the streets to celebrate in the victory parades. However,
meanwhile around the world, Britain and Russia remained unconquered by Napoleon.
