Room 208 Update Week of September 30, 2013 Spring Street School Mrs.

What a great job all our Student Council candidates did! Everyone read their speeches clearly and had great ideas to help our school community. Congratulations to our class representatives: Dennis M. and Jordan C. All students will have opportunities to assist with projects througout the year. Children should be blogging about a curent chapter book they are reading as well as responding to someone elses post due Tuesday. *Parent classroom volunteer information will be out later this week. Math Club- Tuesday, 10/1 8-8:30 AM More Multiplication and Division practice games and strategies. *Dont forget sneakers for PE on Tuesdays! *Pedometer week: Oct 21-25, 2013 more to come on this! Friday, October 4 is World Smile Day in honor/memory of Harvey Ball. Remember to give someone a smile or two! We will continue with narrative openings and introductions. We will also work with poetry at the end of the week. SpellingCity information will be coming home hopefully on Monday. We will be using all the Premium activities as the PTO has graciously assisted us support our spelling initiative! Each child will have a SpellingCity username/password.

Math The Unit 2 assessment will be taken Monday and Tuesday. We then head into multiplication and division strategies. This is a great time for the children to practice math facts at home for a minimum of 10-15 minutes each night either on-line or with flashcards. Tables 6-8 and 11, 12s should be the focus of most students. Check out Multiplication Practice on TeamLuby Resources. There are many fact practice opportunities try Grand Prix or Lemonade Stand! *Check out TeamLuby Resources Math Sites! There are many fact sites to choose from especially for fact practice. You may want to look at the one titled Multiplication Practice. EVERYDAY MATH FAMILY LETTERS can be found on-line this year! As in past years, they contain unit vocabulary, activities, and selected homework answers. Science - from the desk of Mrs. Liporto This week we will learn how to look for the property of hardness in minerals using scratch testing. We will also begin to look at the special property of the mineral Calcite when it comes into contact with an acid.

Social Studies Physical features, landforms, and regions will begin our study of United States regions. Check out magazines, newspapers, web sites for pictures of physical features, climate, natural resources, and people/culture/economy. A homework assignment will be coming home on Monday for pictures!
