FORMAT OF DISSERTATIONS (I) Format of Final Dissertation (Hard-bound Copies)

Upon completion of the examination, the student must submit three copies of the final dissertation to the Office of Graduate Studies and Professional Learning through the Supervisor. The format of the final dissertation must be as follows:

Each copy must be printed and bound with hard covers in international size A4 (210mm x 297mm); Each page must have a left margin and right margin of 3cm each to allow for binding; The dissertation must be preceded by the following in the order given: - Title page (see Annex I for title page format sample) - Acknowledgements - Table of contents - Summary not exceeding 500 words in English (where a dissertation is written in a language other than English, it must contain a summary not exceeding 500 words written in that language in addition to a summary not exceeding 500 words written in English.); References should be included at the end of the dissertation; The dissertation should be double-spaced or space-and-a-half. Exceptions to double-spacing are: the table of contents, tables, figures, graphs, captions, footnotes, endnotes, appendices, glossary, references/ bibliography and index; these may be single-spaced. The title and author's name must be given in block letters on the cover of the dissertation; The title or an abbreviation thereof and the author's name must be given on the spine of the dissertation; The dissertation must be bound in dark blue hardcover with gold lettering not exceeding 16pts (see Annex II for cover format sample); Pages must be numbered in one continuous sequence in arabic numerals. Where a dissertation consists of more than one volume, one sequence must be used. The hardcover, title page and acknowledgements of the dissertation must be printed on single pages. The pages from the content page onwards may be printed double sided. If Compact Disc (CD) is included with the dissertation, it must be placed in a proper CD holder bound to the inside of the hardcover back page of the dissertation; (Note: The student is also required to submit an electronic copy of the final dissertation to the NIE Library http://www.acis.nie.edu.sg/NIELibrary/GeneralGuides/dta_submission.htm) This is for the Library to build up an electronic collection of NIE theses and dissertations for archiving as well as easy reference by staff and students. The softcopy may be submitted in MS Word document, pdf (unprotected) or postscript format.)
