Deakin University, Faculty of Science, Engineering and Built Environment SIT377 - Advanced Network Design and Engineering 2013 / Trimester 2 INTRODUCTION This Unit Guide explains the aims of the unit, describes the assessment requirements and gives details about the teaching and learning strategies used in the delivery of SIT377 Advanced Network Engineering. You should always read this Unit Guide first and check it frequently when preparing to study or embarking on assignment work.

UNIT CHAIR WELCOME Welcome to the unit SIT377 Advanced Network Engineering. In this unit we continue our studies of the CISCO Networking Academy Program CCNA syllabus begun in the pre-requisite unit SIT272 Internet Core Layers and Routing. To date, we have studied in detail IP And Ethernet networks, IP addressing, routing in IP networks, and the configuration of IP networks and routing using CISCO routers and the IOS. In this unit we extend our study of networks, learning more about Ethernet LAN design and implementation, wireless networks, WANs, VPNs, IP addressing services, and troubleshooting. The SIT377 web site can be accessed via CloudDeakin and you should familiarise yourself with this site and its structure as soon as possible. You should visit the site regularly for updates throughout the trimester (at least twice weekly). You can expect to find the following features on CloudDeakin for this unit:
q

Announcements: Information may need to be conveyed to students during the trimester to announce changes to scheduled lectures and laboratories, new content being added to CloudDeakin, or clarifications to assessment items. Please check any announcements carefully to make sure you understand anything applying to you. Staff contact information: The staff involved in any unit may change for various reasons. The information on CloudDeakin will be the latest list of staff and their details. Prescribed readings: The content of this unit is provided both online and in the prescribed textbook. It is critical that you complete these readings prior to your scheduled laboratory time each week to ensure you are productive in the labs. Discussion forums: These forums are provided for you to discuss any issues relating to the unit content with other students and staff. I will be monitoring these forums and answering any questions as often as I can (see How to contact me in Unit Chair Details above). Lecture slides: Slides are usually provided in CloudDeakin after the lectures have been completed on campus. It is important that students understand that lecture slides are one of several presentation aids that are used during lectures and they do not represent any holistic or in-depth view of the content of the unit. Lectures also consist of other elements which arent captured including whiteboards, computer demonstrations, discussions, and so on. Weekly laboratories: Lab tasks are provided which you must complete each week to prepare for the assessment tasks. Failing to complete the required laboratories will likely result in poor mark and possibly failure of the unit. Examination information: Towards the end of the trimester information will be made about the examination. Typically, I release previous years examinations as early as possible during the trimester. Information about the examination itself is usually not released until late in the final week of trimester (Week 12).

If you have any queries regarding the unit, or you are facing problems that may impact upon your performance in the unit, please contact me as soon as possible. Otherwise, I wish you the best of luck for your studies of SIT377 and hope you enjoy the trimester. Ming

Achieving goals

15 July 2013

Deakin University, Faculty of Science, Engineering and Built Environment SIT377 - Advanced Network Design and Engineering 2013 / Trimester 2 Achieving a good result in this unit will require a strong self-discipline on the part of the student. The content of the unit materials is not particularly difficult, relative to the content of other third year units that you are likely to be studying. However, there is a large amount of content and you will need to be consistent in your study. Given the limited laboratory time available, you should review the relevant laboratories as early as feasible before your scheduled class and ensure you are as well prepared as you can be. Being well prepared for the labs will allow you to complete the hands on activities in the lab relatively quickly and free up time to attempt the module tests which will help you prepare for the final assessments.

How to begin Start studying the textbook and online materials as soon as possible. For most students, only reading material does not result in a strong knowledge of the materials, and you should look to supplement your readings by maintaining a journal where you can summarise the important points you have read, keep a record of the commands and syntax you have been introduced to, and to highlight areas where you experienced difficulty so you can better focus your studies when you approach the final assessments. Review your journal regularly, not just when studying for the assessments. By doing so, you will be able to recall more information more quickly, which will also better facilitate your learning of new topics. Try to get ahead of the unit content remember that once the trimester is underway and assignment due dates approach that you will have less time available for normal study. Finally, remember that if you have problems the staff of the unit are here to help. Information is provided in this document on how to contact the unit staff, and updated information will be provided in CloudDeakin.

UNIT DETAILS Content On completion of this unit students will be able to plan, design and configure both local area networks and wide area networks. They will gain thorough knowledge of switching basics and routing concepts and practical knowledge of the use and configuration of network elements such as routers and switches. Students will also be able to effectively administer both local area networks and wide area networks. Topics covered include: hierarchical LAN design for switched Ethernet networks; interconnection elements such as hubs, switches and routers; switching concepts and configuration; the spanning tree protocol and virtual LANs; wireless LAN operation, configuration, and security; WAN design; the point to point protocol (PPP); frame relay; network security and firewall configuration; broadband networks; IPv6; and network troubleshooting. The unit also covers advanced networking concepts such as optical networking, converged networking, virtual private networks, reliability, security and quality of service.

About this unit This unit is aimed at those students who wish to include work in computer networks in their future career. Many organisations seek employees that hold the CISCO Certified Network Associate (CCNA) industry certification. The CCNA certification demonstrates to an employer that you have a good understanding of computer networks and in CISCO hardware in particular, which is the main brand of equipment upon which the Internet is built. In completing this unit, and the pre-requisite SIT272, you will be well prepared to undertake the industry certification examination and to work in the field of computer networks.

Previously learned knowledge and skills The pre-requisite for this unit is SIT272 Internet Core Layers and Routing, which builds a foundation understanding of computer networks focusing on IP And Ethernet networks, IP addressing, routing in IP networks, and the configuration of IP networks and routing using CISCO routers and the IOS. In this unit we extend our study of networks, learning more about Ethernet LAN design and implementation, wireless networks, WANs, VPNs, IP addressing services, and troubleshooting.

Deakin graduate learning outcomes Deakin Graduate Learning Outcomes describe the knowledge and capabilities graduates have acquired and are able to apply and demonstrate at the completion of their course. They consist of outcomes specific to a particular discipline or profession as well as transferable generic outcomes that all graduates should have acquired irrespective of their discipline area. Learning outcomes are not confined to the knowledge and skills acquired within a course, but also incorporate those that students bring with them upon entry to the course consistent with the Australian Qualifications Framework pathways policy. Deakins courses are designed to ensure that students develop systematic knowledge and understanding of their discipline or chosen profession appropriate to their level of study. They are specified at the course level, mapped to course components and are assessed. In professionally-accredited courses, discipline-specific learning outcomes may be defined in part by the relevant professional body. The table below indicates which Deakin Graduate Learning Outcomes are taught, practised and/or assessed within this unit. Attributes that have no ticks assigned to them are important but are not a key part of this unit.

Teaching methods The CISCO Academy regulations mandate a minimum number of hours of class time, which for tertiary institutions including Deakin is divided between lecture time and laboratory time. While lecture attendance at Deakin University is not compulsory, regular attendance is highly recommended and expected under the requirements of the CISCO Academy. Wherever possible, the reference material will be supplemented with additional examples given in lectures. Students who miss a lecture are responsible for acquiring the missed material. It is your responsibility to properly familiarise yourself with the material covered and to find out from other students about any announcements or other administrative matters that were dealt with in class. Much of this information will be found on the unit pages in CloudDeakin but do not assume it is all there! In particular, information relevant only to on-campus students may not be repeated in CloudDeakin. Students who are absent from two or more consecutive lectures should discuss the matter with the unit coordinator. Laboratory Sessions Each student must attend their allocated laboratory sessions each week. Attendance at allocated sessions each week is considered part of the Unit requirements and is therefore COMPULSORY. Furthermore, the record of your attendance will be the basis by which your attendance is reported to CISCO as satisfactory or unsatisfactory. Practical class allocations will be discussed in the first lecture of the trimester. Students MUST attend the

Deakin University, Faculty of Science, Engineering and Built Environment SIT377 - Advanced Network Design and Engineering 2013 / Trimester 2 sessions to which they have been allocated. Students are expected to complete the exercises in the allotted time and review any other exercises for the relevant session in their own time.

Student evaluation The SIT377 unit has received positive feedback throughout its lifetime. In Trimester 1 2009, the unit was updated to (i) cover new curriculum (CCNA Exploration) provided by CISCO, and (ii) adjust the unit offering to the trimester pattern. No critical comments were received through SETU regarding the unit content, thus no specific actions have been taken to change the unit content for Trimester 2.

ASSESSMENT Assessment overview Two multiple choice tests (20% each) 40%, two practical tests (30% each) 60%. To be eligible to obtain a pass in this unit students must complete all CISCO unit requirements.
