Inhibits HMG coenzyme A, the enzyme that catalyzes the first step in the cholesterol synthesis pathway, resulting in a decrease in serum cholesterol, serum LDLs, and either an increase or no change in serum HDLs.

- Adjunct to diet in the treatment of elevated total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol with primary hypercholesterolemia

- Use cautiously with impaired hepatic and renal function, cataracts. Abdominal cramps, constipation, diarrhea, flatus, heartburn, rashes, rhabdmyolysis (rapid breakdown of skeletal muscle tissue)

Instruct patient to take medication as directed and not to skip doses or double up on missed doses.

Advise patient that this medication should be used in conjunction with diet restrictions (fat, cholesterol, carbohydrates, alcohol), exercise, and cessation of smoking.
