AIM

The main aim of the workshop is to carry out an international experience in teamwork, which will be
intensive given the limited available time.
The activities will be jointly undertaken by the teachers and students of the participating schools.
Each group, coordinated by two teachers, will develop a single proposal.
It should be pointed out that, opposed to a course or seminar, the intention of this intensive
workshop is to produce material for the public discussion. This will condition the structure of the
workshop.

STRUCTURE

‐ The workshop consists of five groups, each made up of six students (one from each participating
university) and two teachers (one from the ETSAB and one from a guest university).

‐ The workshop pretends to be an intensive production space with parallel activities:

presentations, lectures, visits and other events, all sharing design as a common thread.

‐ The intermediate review by an external jury after one week divides the workshop into two stages
and means that students must have acquired criteria and solutions that can be assessed at the
end of the first stage. It also guarantees a minimum amount of time for verification,
experimentation and development of secondary ideas in the latter stage.
‐ On the first day, the participants from each school submit samples of experiences of their own
city, focusing on the topic “borders between planned and spontaneous city” and finding critical
reviews and innovative readings about the construction of specific areas of their cities where
urban form was not integrated in the planning process.
Preparation of this material should allow a prior involvement in the workshop topic and provide
all the participants with some shared references. The presentation of this preliminary work also
serves as the presentation of the corresponding school.

The working language of the workshop is English.

Conferences and lectures will be organized to complement the projects carried out in the workshop.
A detailed lecture programme will be provided in the final dossier, which will be drawn up in the
course of the year.

ORGANISATIONAL ARRANGEMENTS

All participants will receive credentials that enable them to eat daily in the school cafeteria, to visit
the library, and to use the limited accounts opened by the workshop at various school facilities, such
as the photocopy shop, the stationer’s and the model workshop.

The summer workshop will be held in two areas, both of which are air‐conditioned: a conference hall
and a classroom equipped with computers, scanner and printers. It is recommended although that
studenst bring their own laptops.
TOPIC

EL CARMEL: AFTER THE CITY

Barcelona is worldwide known as a paradigm of modern‐planned city. From the XIXth Century
Extension Plan of the Eixample Cerdà to the newer recovering interventions of the sea front the city
has been an innovative field for urban and architectural strategies. Besides this programmed
approach to the CITY‐PLANNING a spontaneous process of CITY‐MAKING arose in some forgotten
parts of Barcelona in mid XXth century. After some decades of urban deficiencies these areas are
seen as fields for city‐renewal.

TE’TSAB 09 will focus on El Carmel, one of the more genuine and spontaneous neighborhoods of the
city. Finding approaches and strategies for CITY‐RECYCLING through architecture will constitute the
challenge of this year summer workshop.
