1. Can’t a Werewolf get some sleep?

“Jacob, I’m not playing around anymore! Get your butt out of
bed! You’re going to be late for you first day.”
Damn! How can Billy be so loud at this hour? Why should I care
that I start my first day as a junior today? It’s not like I need school. I’m
a werewolf for Christ sake.
Regardless of my opinion, I threw the blankets onto the floor,
threw my legs over the edge of the bed, and stood up. My muscles
were so sore, but maybe that’s because I had run patrol last night. I
stretched quickly, and then changed into a pair of jeans and a faded
red shirt. I raced towards the kitchen. Before Billy was able to get a
word in, I apologized quickly.
“Yeah, yeah. I know I’m late, but you try running patrol for five
hours and waking for school the next morning,” I persisted.
“Maybe you should ask Sam to reduce your patrol hours if it’s
going to affect school so much,” Billy shot back at me. I had to admit
he knew how to get to me.
I was about to press on the subject of even going to school, but
there was a knock on the front door. I strode towards to door and
swung it open. Quil and Embry were standing before me.
“Ready to go Jake?” Embry questioned. Before I could answer,
Billy tossed and apple in my direction.
“You better get going, Jake. Don’t want to be late,” Billy
chuckled, obviously amused by Quil and Embry’s timing.
The ride to school was short. We ended up taking the Rabbit. We
pulled into the school parking lot and I saw the other kids raced
towards each other and commented on the others summer. I could tell
easily which of the students were freshmen. They had a look of pure
horror on their face as the upperclassmen strolled by them. I tried to
picture the look on their faces if I showed up to school as a wolf. I
chuckled softly to myself.
“Hey, what’s so funny, Jake?” Quil asked lightly as we got out of
the Rabbit and started towards school, before the warning bell could
ring.
“I was just wondering about how the freshman would look if I
came to school as a wolf,” I chuckled again.
“The look on the freshmen’s faces? Try the look on everyone’s
face,” Quil laughed loudly. Embry, who was on my other side, laughed
along with him.
The warning bell signaled and we made our way across campus
to our first period class.

The first half of the day passed in a blur. I can remember sitting
in my history class and feeling a pulling force. I ignored it for quite
some time, but it continued. I had history first period too! I was
focused to try and control the pull for the entire morning. By lunch I
was exhausted already. As I walked out the door of my Spanish class, I
saw Embry, Quil, and Paul waiting for me by my locker. I made my way
slowly towards them.
“Whoa, Jake man. Are you alright? You don’t look so hot,” Paul
stated. I could tell he was in a good mood. Probably because the
freshman had been checking him out, knowing him. Of course that
thought didn’t please me too much. He was supposed to be eternally
bound to my sister Rachel, but Paul can’t change all of his ways.
“Yeah, whatever. I’m fine,” I claimed slowly.
“Are you sure man? We could walk you too the nurse,” Embry
shot in. I could not do that though. The nurse would most likely take
my temperature and she’d find it at a blazing 109 degrees and I would
be sent to the hospital right away. After I had gone through the scene
in my head, it was obvious Embry had realized his mistake.
“I’m fine. I swear,” I retorted. “Let’s just get to lunch.”
We made our way down the familiar hallway towards the
cafeteria. The four of us got in line and grabbed our food. We walked to
our usual table. Jared and Kim, who are seniors this year, were already
seated. Along with Seth, who is a sophomore, and Collin and Brady,
who are freshmen.
“Took you guys long enough!” Seth practically jumped out of his
seat. “I had to sit here with these two lovers for ten minutes.”
Paul and Quil chuckled loudly. Jared and Kim slowly joined in. It
feels uncomfortable being around my brothers. Most of them have
already imprinted. Seth, Embry, Collin, Brady, and I are the only ones
to have not imprinted. Well, Leah too, but it’s different with her.
Everyone was talking about the day’s events. Collin and Brady
were going on about how some senior girls had checked them out. The
pulling force started to build slowly; it was getting stronger every
second. I could barely take it anymore. I looked up from my food to see
if any of the others felt it, but if they did they didn’t let it show.
“Do you guys feel that?” I asked suddenly. Everyone’s eyes
turned toward me. They were looking at me as if I were going crazy.
That is likely, but I doubt it.
“Feel what?” Jared asked slowly and cautiously. His eyes drifted
back and forth checking if there was any danger in the area.
“That pulling force. I’ve felt it all morning, but I tried to control it.
It just keeps getting stronger,” I said. I decided it would be a good idea
to tell the truth.
Jared was about the say something, but cut himself off. He
exchanged glances with Paul and Quil. I couldn’t take it anymore. The
look in their eyes told me they didn’t feel it, but they understood. Just
as I felt I was about to scream the force got even stronger. It seemed
like it could lift me out of my seat. I looked in the direction that I
thought the force was pulling me in. I turned to see a strikingly
beautiful blonde girl making her way across the cafeteria.

2. Whoa, so this is what it feels like.

The girl was breathtaking. She had long blonde hair that flowed
easily around her face and stopped at her shoulder blades. It was
curly, yet wavy at the same time. She turned towards another girl. A
brunette and laughed at something she had said. The other girl was
nothing compared to her. The blonde had to be 5’2”. She was short
with a petite figure. Her curves were visible. She turned towards
another girl. Her turn gave me a full view of her face.
Suddenly, it seemed as if I was floating. Everything I was
worrying about drifted away from me. All the bad events that had
taken place over the past year didn’t seem to matter anymore. The
only thing that mattered was the breathtaking beauty across the room.
My life had seemed to be a mess for so long, but in that instant
everything fell into place. I felt whole once again. I didn’t worry about
Bella anymore. She slipped out to the back of my mind. Slowly my
whole mind was being used to analyze her every move. Suddenly, it
felt as if everything was slipping away from me. Everything that tied
me to the Earth and everything that made me Jacob Black started
flying away from me. But all of a sudden something held everything
into place. It was her. She easily took her place into my heart and I
didn’t even know her name. I started drifting back down to reality.
“Jake, man. What’s up with you?” Embry worried. He looked over
at Quil who just shrugged and looked back at me.
“Whoa,” I said breathlessly. That was the only word that was
able to escape me lips.
Slowly everyone at the table follow me gaze to the beautiful
blonde. Jared, Paul, and Quil seemed to understand immediately. It
took the rest of them a second to realize it, but they did.
“No, Jake! Not you too!” Seth cried.
“Hey, he can’t control it. None of us can,” Jared shrugged as if it
were no big deal. It seemed that due to the look on Paul’s he didn’t
think it was either. I turned my unwilling eyes away from the blonde
and looked to Quil. He looked at me with amused eyes.
“Amazing isn’t it?” Quil asked. His eyes seemed to be
somewhere else. Probably remembering when he had imprinted on
Claire.
“Amazing doesn’t come close to covering her,” I replied weakly.
Jared Paul, Quil, and Kim laughed for a minute or two.
“So, Emma huh?” Quil asked casually. “She is pretty.”
Pretty didn’t come close to her. It took me a minute to realize
that he knew her.
“You know her?” I asked abruptly.
Quil chuckled by my response. “Sure. She’s in my history and
Literature class,” Quil stated.
“Dude, you’re going to give him a heart attack. Get her over here
for him,” Jared ordered Quil.
“Hey, Emma! Come Here!” Quil yelled across the cafeteria. A
couple of freshmen looked over at us, but Emma looked up confused.
She saw Quil standing up waving for her to come over. She smiled a
breathtaking smile and made her way across the café.
“Hey, Quil. What’s up?” Emma asked Quil. She looked around the
table at each of us. She was even more beautiful up close and her
voice sent shivers down my spine.
“Nothing. Do you want to sit with us?” Quil asked her casually.
He pulled a chair up between him and me.
“Uh, sure. Why not?” Emma asked to no one in particular.
Quil started introducing Emma to each of us. She said hello to
everyone timidly.
“Hello, Jacob,” Emma said after Quil had introduced me. Hearing
my name come from her mouth gave me goose bumps.
By the end of lunch I learned that her name was Emma Carter.
She moved to La Push from Malibu, which explained how tan she was.
She was a junior here. She was 16 years old and had an older brother,
Evan. He is a senior and in some of Jared and Kim’s classes.
By the time lunch was over I had gotten to know all the basic
things about her, but I wanted to know more. We all started walking
back towards our lockers and Emma separated from to rest of us as
her locker came up. I stayed behind to talk to her more.
“What class do you have next?” I asked her. I prayed for my life
that she had Biology next.
“Uh,” Emma looking through her paper quickly and then
skimmed her schedule. “Biology.”
“Me too,” I said. I hope my excitement wasn’t to noticeable.
“Great. At least I’ll know one person in that class,” Emma
laughed casually.
“If you need help finding it, I could walk you there. I just need to
go to my locker first,” I told her. My voice shook a little with fear of her
reply.
“That would be nice, Jacob,” she answered warmly.
We made our way down the hallway towards my locker. I found
Embry leaning casually against it.
“Hey bro! Ready for bio?” Embry asked. I’d forgotten we both
had bio this period.
“Uh, yeah. Hold on though. I have to get my stuff,” I answered
him. Embry looked from me to Emma quickly and shot me an
approving glance.
“Hey, Emma. I’m Embry.” As he introduced himself, I grabbed
my books quickly and shut my locker. We started making our way to
biology.
“Yeah I know. I met you at lunch,” She stated and flashed him a
smile.
“Oh yeah. I forgot,” Embry laughed. I didn’t understand how he
could forget a girl like Emma. We walked into the biology room and Mr.
Turner glanced at each of us.
“The sheet with the name of your lab partner is on the back
board,” Mr. Turner told us slowly.
“Embry! You’re my partner!” Lisa Brown shouted. She had a
crush on Embry for as long as I could remember. I looked to Embry to
see he had a polite, but obviously disappointed smile on his face.
I walked over to the partner sheet and scrolled down for my
name. Once I found it I looked across from my name and there was
Emma’s name. I couldn’t believe it. I’d been hoping we’d be partners,
but I’m usually never partners with the person I want.
Emma walked up next to me. She found her name next to mine
and turned to smile at me.
“Looks like we’re partners Jake,” She smiled and it looked as if
she was truly happy.
We sat down at the empty table behind Embry and Lisa. He
turned around and gave me a wink. I fought against my smile, but of
course I lost.
Before I could say anything to Emma or Embry, Mr. Turner
started on with his lecture. He went on about books and assignments.
He handed out papers listing what we would be going over and what
kinds of things we would be doing. He told us that the partners we had
would be our permanent partners. I couldn’t be happier. Embry on the
other hand shot me a worried glance. I felt bad he had to be partners
with Lisa for our whole Junior year. I could feel Emma looking over at
me. I turned to look at her and she turned away quickly and her cheeks
started to grow red.
3. Isn’t this supposed to stop?

At that moment images of Bella flew into my head. I saw her

deep chocolate eyes, shiny brown hair, and simple yet beautiful smile.
Images of her when Edward had left and everything after he had come
back slid through my mind like a movie. The last image that lingered
there was her behind Edward at that mistake of a wedding. That had
been the last time I saw her. Why am I still thinking about her? I
imprinted. Shouldn’t I no longer care about her? I spent the rest of
class wondering what had happened to her. I heard she came home,
but I never went to see her. It was probably a good thing I didn’t; I
don’t know how long I would be able to look at her as a hard cold
stone.
“Jake?” Emma asked quietly. I turned to see her face streaked
with panic.
“Yeah?” I asked. I could hear my voice trembling, but I hoped she
couldn’t.
“Are you okay? You don’t look good. Do you want me to walk you
to the nurse?” Emma asked concerned.
“No. I’m fine Emma,” I told her, but she didn’t look convinced.
“Really, Emma.”
“Yeah, Emma. He’ll be okay. I have Calculus with Jake next. I got
him don’t worry about him,” Embry shot in.
The bell rang and we got out of our seats. We walked through
the door and got a disapproving look from Mr. Turner.
“I have Calculus next too,” Emma smiled brightly. “I’m going to
put my stuff in my locker, so I’ll meet you guys there.” She turned
lightly on her heels and walked towards her locker. Embry and I went
to our lockers and put away our biology books. Every few seconds
Embry would glance at me.
“Embry, I’m fine,” I told him.
“Dude, what happened back there?” Embry asked worriedly.
“What do you mean?” I asked him confused.
“One second you were so happy and looking over at Emma and
then the next you were sweating. It was creepy Jake. You like weren’t
there for a while,” Embry told me.
“Oh that. Well, I don’t really know. I looked over at Emma and
she blushed, and then Bella just filled my head. Why am I still thinking
about her? I was worrying and obsessing. I imprinted, so shouldn’t that
stop?” I asked. My voice was shaking and I had started to sweat again.
“Yeah. Well, I guess. That’s at least what I think,” Embry told me.
I was upset that I didn’t have an actual answer.
“Whatever. Let’s just go to class,” I told him glumly.

Finally, after two more hours I was able to go home. I had to sit
in Calculus with worried glances from Embry and Emma for an hour.
After, I had Gym with Paul and Embry. Embry had told Paul about my
freak out in biology, so I had to deal with more glances from both of
them.
I was at my locker, when Jared walked over with Kim. I took a
minute before I looked up worried about the look that would be on
their faces. I took my time putting all my books away and grabbed my
extremely light bag. Of course we had very little homework; We had
only been assigned homework on filling out papers about ourselves.
When I finally looked up, Jared and Kim looked pretty much the way
they always do.
“Sam called. He said he wanted us to meet at his house. Said it
was important,” Jared informed me.
“Alright. I’ll be there,” I told him. I slung my bag over my
shoulder and closed my locker. Jared started to walk away while
holding Kim’s hand, but he turned around.
“Jake, Are you alright?” He asked slowly. I was afraid this would
be coming.
“Why? What did Embry tell you?” I asked. Of course Embry would
tell the pack.
“He just told us about your little freak out in biology,” He
shrugged like it was no big deal. He didn’t act the same as Embry and
Paul had.
“Of course. Don’t worry about it. I’m fine,” I assured him.
Jared smiled and walked away with Kim. I walked towards the
front doors to meet Embry and Quil by the Rabbit. I heard two people
arguing and turned in the direction it was coming from. I saw Emma
arguing with a large blonde boy. He was a lot taller than her. He was
probably 6’4” or 6’5” if anything. He was tan and muscular. His body
was shaking a little. As I saw this, I had the urge to get in his face. I
walked over slowly, so it didn’t look like I was about to ripe him to
pieces.
“Everything okay over here?” I asked both of them, but had my
eyes locked on the boy.
“Yeah. Everything is fine. Evan’s just being a jerk,” Emma
assured me. Evan, looked at me smugly. Evan was her brother. Now
that I looked at him closely I could see the resemblance.
“Yeah, dude. You have no reason to worry. Run along with your
little friends,” Evan told me. He rolled his eyes. I thought about
punching him in the face, but realized that it probably wouldn’t be such
a good idea.
“Evan, don’t be rude!” Emma shouted. “Why do you always have
to be such a jerk?”
“I’m not being a jerk. I just don’t think your little friend should
get into our business,” Evan replied exasperated.
“You’re calling me little?” I asked him confused.
“I’m sorry I just don’t want to ride in your car with that girl you
met at the beach. She’s annoying. I’m not dealing with her for the ride
home,” she told him.
“Then don’t! You can walk home then,” Evan shouted at her.
“You don’t have to walk, Emma. I’ll give you a ride home,” I shot
in.
“No, Jake. Thanks, but you don’t have to go out of your way,” she
told me.
“No, really. Don’t worry about it. It isn‘t a big deal,” I explained. I
wasn’t going to let her in the car with this jackass.
“Are you sure?” Emma asked. I could tell that she would rather,
but she felt bad about having me do this.
“Yeah! No big deal,” I told her again. I pulled her away from her
brother and pushed open the front doors. She looked over at me a few
times. I could see Embry and Quil by the Rabbit.
“Sorry, Jake. Evan can be a little overbearing,” Emma apologized.
“Don’t worry about it. I deal with jerks all the time,” I shrugged. I
heard her laugh lightly beside me.
We reached the car. Embry and Quil exchanged looks with each
other, when they saw Emma with me.
“Did Jared tell you Sam called yet?” Embry asked me.
“Yeah he did. I’ll drop you guys off over there, then drive Emma
home and I’ll be there,” I informed them. “Emma’s brother was being a
jerk to her, so I said I’d give her a ride.”
“Hey, Emma. How’s it going?” Quil asked her.
“I’m good, thanks. How about you?” Emma asked politely.
“Great,” Quil replied.

The car ride was quiet, but short. The only things said were by
Embry and Quil talking about the game last night. After Embry and Quil
walked into Sam’s, I turned to Emma.
“Where to?” I asked her.
“Uh, Forks,” She told me. She looked past my head. That was
most likely the reason for her hesitation earlier. She didn’t want me to
have to go out of my way.
“You live in Forks?” I asked. There was a tug in my chest as I said
the town’s name. I moved the car out of park and started towards the
highway.
“Yeah. My uncle lives there,” Emma replied. “I’m sorry. I told you
that you’d be going out of your way.”
“Don’t worry about it,” I shrugged. It was no big deal. I didn’t
mind driving her home. “So you live with your uncle?”
“Uh, yeah. My parents died this summer, so my brother and I had
to move in with my uncle. He’s cool though. I don’t mind,” Emma
explained.
“That sucks about your parents. I’m sorry. I lost my mom when I
was younger. How’d your parents die?” After I said it, I thought about
how it might make her upset to tell me. “You don’t have to tell me if
you don’t want to.”
“No, it’s fine. They were murdered,” Emma told me quietly. She
looked down as she answered. “I’m sorry about your mom.”
“Thanks, but I don’t really remember her.” I decided not to press
more about her parents.
We got off the highway and I looked to her. She met my eyes
and I noticed that they were a beautiful blue. They were as blue as the
ocean on a sunny day at the La Push Beach. Her eyes looked sad. I
broke my heart to see them like that.
“Keep going straight then talk a right. Go straight for a while
longer and take a left. It’s the first house on the right,” She told me
glumly.
I thought about the directions as I followed them. They seemed
so familiar. I pulled up to a small house and looked at it.

4. I sure as hell didn’t see this coming.

“Jake, are you alright?” Emma asked concerned. This was the
second time I saw her face like that and hopefully the last.
I was looking at the place I had run past so many times in the
night to protect the one I loved. The place that my father had brought
me to, so that I could see a girl I had met when I was younger and to
visit old family friends. I was looking at the Swan home.
“Jake! Seriously you’re scaring me!” Emma said. I looked at her
and saw her eyes wide.
“You live here?” I asked. I couldn’t wrap my head around the fact
that I was in front of Bella’s former home.
“Come inside. You don’t look so good,” Emma said to me.
“No, Em. I’m fine. I have to get going anyway,” I informed her.
“You’re not driving anywhere just yet,” Emma commanded. She
unbuckled her seat belt and opened the car door. She started walking
to the front door, but turned around to see me still frozen in place.
Emma started to stare me down. It was freaking me out, so I decided
no harm would come if I was a little late for the meeting. I pushed open
my door and stepped out. I looked up at the house and felt chills go
down my spine.
“Happy?” I asked Emma sarcastically.
“Ecstatic,” Emma rolled her eyes. She walked up the front steps
and opened the door. She turned around to look at me. She waited to
make sure I didn’t make a run for it. That was a tempting thought.
Even though I had imprinted, it still didn’t change the way the
memories of Bella made me feel.
“Emma, is that you?” I heard a voice in the distance yell.
“Yep,” Emma shouted back. Her brother Evan started walking
out of the living room towards us.
“Listen, Em. I’m sorry for-” Evan started to say, but cut himself
off. His eyes darted from me to Emma repeatedly.
“Evan, you remember Jake,” Emma assumed from his
expression.
“Uh, yeah. Sorry for earlier, man. Bad day. No hard feelings?”
Evan asked me warily.
“Yeah. Don’t worry about it,” I told him. He gave me a half smile
and turned to his sister.
“Em, I’m sorry for acting like a jerk today,” Evan apologized. He
seemed sincere about it.
“You’ve been acting like a jerk a lot lately,” Emma accused him.
“I’m sorry,” Evan said again.
“It’s alright,” Emma shrugged. “Just don’t act like it again
please.”
“Done,” Evan smiled and walked into the living room again. For
such a big guy Evan moved pretty gracefully.
“Emma, I’ve got to run. I have to meet the guys at Sam’s,” I told
her. I watched her face drop. It killed me to see her disappointed, but
Sam’s meetings are usually important and I can’t afford to miss it.
“Oh. Okay,” Emma answered. She tried to hide that she was
upset, but she didn’t know that I had already noticed.
“I’ll see you tomorrow,” I smiled. She smiled back and I turned
around and opened the door. “Bye, Evan.”
“Oh your leaving already?” Evan yelled.
“Yeah, I got to run. See you around,” I told him. I walked out the
door and started to close it, but Emma caught it. She smile slightly.
“I’m just going to make sure you don’t collapse,” she chuckled.
“Oh, alright. Thanks,” I told her sincerely. I walked to the Rabbit.
I climbed in and looked back to the house. Emma was still standing on
the porch. She waved and I waved back. I drove away from the familiar
house.

I pulled up to Sam’s house. I noticed the curtain move slightly. I

rolled my eyes and got out of the car. Before I could open the door,
Paul had it flung open.
“Dude! Where have you been?” He shouted. Obviously he was
still concerned after today’s events.
“I had to drop Emma off. Chill out,” I laughed. I pushed past Paul
and sat on the couch between Embry and Quil.
“It’s about time, Jake,” Sam said. He was walking out of the
kitchen with a glass of water in one hand and a folder in the other.
“Yeah, yeah. I know I’m late,” I shrugged. “Let’s just get this over
with.”
“Okay,” Sam rolled his eyes. “I called all of you here on
extremely important business.”
“Just like every meeting you hold,” Jared laughed. Sam glared at
Jared. Usually Sam just lets our comments slide. Unless the meetings
were important. We all got quiet. Embry and Quil sat up straight. I
noticed Paul lean forward in his seat. Seth, Colin, and Brady also
leaned forward. Leah had a look of concern on her face and looked
around the room. Jared, who had still been laughing, abruptly stopped.
“I’m not going to tolerate your comments today!” Sam shouted
at all of us. Leah, Colin, and Brady jumped a little at Sam’s volume. The
rest of us were perfectly still. “Our job is to protect the innocent, and it
seems to me that some of you don’t want to take that seriously! You’re
late, making comments, and causing distractions. If any of you can’t
take your job as protectors to La Push seriously then I suggest you
leave! Now!”
None of us moved a muscle. Sam looked over each of us. His
eyes stopped on me. He stared into my eyes. I could tell he meant
business. I stood up and Embry and Quil looked to each other then
back to me. The whole pack moved nervously. I went and stood by
Sam.
“Sam is right. He called this meeting for an important reason. I
apologize for being late, Sam. I’m here now and I’m going to take my
job seriously,” I told everyone. I’m the rightful alpha to the pack, but I
had told Sam that I didn’t want the role. Sam now looks to me as his
beta. I want to do everything I can to help La Push, Sam, the pack, and
the innocent.
“Apology accepted, Jake. Take a seat,” Sam told me. I went back
to where I had been sitting and sat down. Embry and Quil relaxed a
little. They probably thought I was going to walk out on the pack. “Over
in California there was a murder. A man and woman. The man was a
former werewolf. He was actually from La Push.”
“Was he a Quiluete?” Paul asked.
“Yes, he was. His name was Jason. He grew up in La Push and at
the age of 14 he began to change. After he was fully changed, Old Quil
found him and explained what happened. Jason took off. He was
missing for 3 years. When he came back, Old Quil went to talk to him
again. Jason told Old Quil what he had done and all the lives he had
saved. He told him that he was fully under control now and forced
himself to no longer morph. Old Quil was amazed. Jason told him that
he didn’t want to live like that anymore and that he was happy with all
the he had done. Jason met Kate soon after. They fell in love and after
the graduated they got married. Kate was from Forks. At 18 years old
Jason was married and his wife was expecting a baby. Soon after the
baby was born they decided to move away-” Sam told us.
“Wait, I’m confused. So this guy became a werewolf, but he
learned to control himself. After, he met a girl. They fell in love, got
married, and had a kid. Why’d they move away?” Seth asked.
“Jason and Kate had a son. Old Quil came to Jason and told him
that there was a chance his son would become what he once was.
Jason didn’t want that life for his son, so he moved the family hoping
that would make sure his son wouldn’t become a werewolf,” Sam told
Seth sadly.
“But that doesn’t help anything. Once things are set in motion
there is no stopping it,” Colin told Sam.
“Yes, but Jason didn’t know that,” Sam looked to the floor.
“What happened after they moved?” Leah asked quietly.
“A year later they had a girl. The family was happy and healthy.
Nothing was going wrong. Jason’s son was playing sports and growing
up. His daughter was his whole world. She played sports, took dance,
and competed in competitions. Jason had no idea that his past was
about to come back and haunt him,” Sam said sadly. “While Jason was
off as a werewolf he took down many vampires. He killed whole covens
at times, but he mostly killed lone vamps. Jason killed a female leech
that had been causing severe damage. He had no idea that it was a
coven doing to damage.”
“The rest of the coven was plotting revenge,” I heard Embry
mutter.
“Yes, they were,” Sam continued. “It took them about 17 years
to find Jason. When they did, he was at home with his wife. The kids
were out with their friends. The three vampires killed Jason and Kate in
order to avenge their lost member. The mate of the dead vampire
noticed a picture on the mantle at Jason’s home. It was a picture of
Jason and Kate’s daughter. Before the other two leeches killed Jason
and Kate, the mate demanded to know where the girl was. Of course
neither of them would tell him. He told them that he wanted her and
that she would be with him from now on.”
“He wanted her for a new mate!” Jared shouted. Jared was
furious.
“Yes, he did,” Sam told everyone calmly.
“What happened to the kids?” Leah asked.
“They moved in with Kate’s brother. He lives in Forks. I want to
spread patrol out to forks. We’ll have more of us running patrol at
night. There is no way those parasites are getting near those kids,”
Sam said angrily. I sat still for a minute and absorbed everything Sam
had told us. Then it hit me.
Two children. A boy and a girl. They live in Forks with their uncle.
There is a chance that the children could be werewolves. I understood
that I needed to do everything to protect the two kids. To protect
Emma and Evan.
5. Every time I’m happy something has to
happen.

“Oh my god!” I shouted. I jumped to my feet. My entire body was

shaking. I wasn’t in control of myself. I could tell the pack had been
startled, but once they looked at me and saw me shaking they acted
quickly.
“Jake, breathe!” Embry shouted to me. Quil put a hand on my
chest and Jared and Paul stood on Sam’s flanks as he took place in
front of me.
“What’s wrong, Jacob? You need to control yourself,” Sam told
me calmly.
“Those bloodsucking parasites are after Emma!” I yelled. Quil,
Embry, Paul, and Jared froze around me. Everyone besides Sam and
Leah were shocked. It was obvious I was the only one that had put it all
together.
“You know Emma?” Sam asked.
“Emma is the girl Jake imprinted on,” Seth said. He slowly came
into view. My body wasn’t shaking as much as before and the red I had
been seeing was disappearing.
Sam stood frozen in place. He was staring past me to another
place. Slowly he came back. He walked over to where the folder was
placed. He picked it up and pulled out a stack of papers. He handed
one to each of us. I looked down and saw two pictures. One was of
Evan and the other was of Emma. Beautiful Emma. My Emma. She
looked care free and happy. Her blue eyes didn’t look the way they had
today. It was clear that in her eyes now was sadness.
Sadness because she was leaving her friends. Because she was
forced to start all over. Because both her parents were killed. Because
she has no idea whether she’ll be able to get though her parents’
death. She may not know it yet, but sadness because she is being
hunted down by a sick, twisted parasite that is craving revenge.
“Whoa, Jake. This sucks. Finally you’re able to get over Bella and
now this. We’re here for you though. We’ll help you get through this,”
Jared said as he walked closer to me. Jared had never shown me this
much emotion and understanding. This time he was probably thinking
about if he were and my position and Kim in Emma’s.
“Jared.. This probably isn’t the best time to be talking about
Bella,” Embry warned Jared. I forgot all about today’s episode. Embry
had been there and I had told him about how I still had feelings for
Bella.
“Oh, right. Sorry,” Jared said slowly.
“What’s going on?” Sam asked suddenly. I guess no one had
filled him in on my freak out in class. Seth, Colin, Brady, and Leah
looked confused as well. I knew Leah would be confused considering
she didn’t even know I had imprinted.
Embry began filling Sam and the rest of the pack in on my freak
out in biology. Sam kept looking over at me sympathetically, but I
didn’t pay much attention to the conversation. I was too busy thinking
about Emma. I needed to see her. She isn’t safe and it’s my duty to
protect her. Emma has become my world in less than 24 hours. Her
face filled my mind. I began to feel weak in the knees and I could hear
her laugh. Her eyes were bright and happy like in the picture in front of
me. She was smiling and her head fell back as she started laughing.
“Jake? Jake, answer me,” Sam commanded. I looked to him and
saw worry in his eyes.
“Sorry. What were you saying?” I asked calmly, but Sam could
tell that I wasn’t so calm.
“It’s normal for you to not be completely over Bella yet. You
imprinted a few hours ago. It takes some time to get over your first
love. Believe me,” Sam said slowly. His eyes looked sad. He seemed to
be thinking back to another time. I looked to Leah, but she was facing
away from all of us. Of course Sam would know. He had been in love
before he imprinted on Emily.
“What happens if I see her again though?” I asked Sam.
“Your love for Emma is stronger than it was or ever will be for
Bella. You don’t need to worry about loosing Emma. And Jake, were
going to take care of this. Emma and her brother will be safe,” Sam
said reassuringly.
I nodded to Sam and sat back down. Quil and Embry sat by me
again. Slowly everyone but Sam sat back down.
“We’ll have part of the park running patrol here in La Push and
another part of us in Forks. I was thinking that maybe we’ll have at
least three wolves running patrol in each location. Some of us will have
to take longer shifts, but it’s to protect everyone. Does anyone have a
problem with running longer patrol?” Sam said almost robotically. He
was right back to business.
“I can hardly run my patrol hours as it is. I don’t think I can run
double shifts,” said Embry quietly. Embry still hadn’t told his mom that
he was a werewolf and he constantly got grounded for being out at late
hours of the night.
“That’s understandable. Embry you won’t have to run a double
shift,” Sam assured Embry. “Jake, Embry, and Quil will run patrol
together, but Embry won’t be back for anymore shifts after that,” Sam
told us.
“Alright,” Quil told Sam. I just nodded in agreement.
“I’ll be running with Jared and Paul. Leah, Seth, Collin, and Brady
will run together, but after Embry goes home Seth will run with Jacob
and Quil. If anything goes wrong or something doesn’t seem right howl
and we’ll meet up,” Sam said. “Jake, we’ll need Emma’s address, so
that we can keep a special eye there. You dropped her off today
right?” Sam asked me.
“Watch over the Swam home,” I said while starring at the floor.
“Jake, we aren’t looking after Bella. Plus she lives with her
parasite husband,” Paul snapped.
“I get that. Emma lives with Charlie. He’s her uncle,” I yelled.
Everyone was quiet for what seemed like forever. No one moved
and no one shot others nerved glances.
“I’m sorry what did you just say?” Jared laughed. He seemed to
think it was a joke.
“Charlie Swan is Emma and Evans’ uncle. Bella is their cousin.
Yes I know it’s weird,” I shouted. I was done playing these games with
everyone.
“Jake, are you sure?” Sam asked shocked.
“Yes I’m sure. I dropped her off today, remember? I saw her
house,” I snapped.
“Wow,” Quil and Embry said together. It seemed that was the
only thing able to come out of their mouths.
“Uh, Okay. We’ll keep an eye on the Swan house,” Sam said
cautiously. Obviously he didn’t want to trigger anything.
“Dude.. What’s with you and people living in that house?” Paul
joked. He got a chuckle out of a few of us.
“I have to see Emma,” I said suddenly.
“Jake, you can’t. It’s almost six,” Sam told me.
“And?” I asked.
“Charlie will be home soon. Do you really want to have to face
him?” Sam hinted.
“I’ll take my chances,” I informed him. I got up and strode
through the down. I jogged to my car and hopped in. I quickly started
the car and pulled out of the driveway.
I was on the highway in no time. I didn’t have to pay much
attention to where I was going. I knew the way by heart. I mostly
thought about Emma and keeping her safe. I needed to see her. I
needed to know that she was okay. I pulled up to the Swan house and
saw that Charlie’s cruiser was still missing from his usual spot. I
jumped out of the car and casually walked up to the door. I could smell
something good. I knocked lightly on the door and Evan had it swung
open in no time.

6. Dinning with a Werewolf

“Jacob right?” Evan asked.

“Yeah, sorry to interrupt. Is Emma here?” I asked.
“Yeah, she is,” Evan said lightly. “Emma! Door!” Evan moved out
of the way and motioned for me to come in. I walked through the
doorway and felt an uneasiness, but it was gone once I saw Emma. She
was wearing an apron around her waist. She had her hair pulled back
in a loose ponytail. She looked just as beautiful as she had when I
dropped her off.
“Jake? What are you doing here?” Emma asked slowly. It wasn’t
obvious if she was upset or not that I had just shown up. I turned
around to see that Evan had left.
“Uh, I needed to talk to you,” I told her.
“It couldn’t of waited till tomorrow?” Emma asked. Her eyes
shifted uncomfortably.
“It’s important,” I assured her.
“Okay,” Emma said. She turned and walked towards the kitchen.
She turned around and raised an eyebrow at me to ask if I was coming.
I followed her into the all to familiar kitchen. I sat down in one of the
unmatching chairs. Emma just looked at me shook her head and got
back to cooking. “So.. What was so important that it couldn’t of waited
till tomorrow?”
“Well, it’s about why you moved here,” I told her uncomfortably.
She looked up startled.
“I told you that already. My parents died, so I had to come live
with my uncle,” Emma told me again. It seemed like she was hiding
something.
“Emma, I know. About your dad,” I said quietly.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Emma said. Her back
was to me, so I wasn’t able to read her face. I got up from my seat to
stand beside her. She looked up startled, but I could tell she
understood.
“Yes you do,” I said calmly. “Your dad was originally from La
Push and your mom was from Forks.”
“How’d you know that?” Emma asked shocked. She looked into
my eyes and suddenly something clicked there. “Oh. I understand.”
“You do?” I questioned.
“Quiluete right?” Emma raised an eyebrow.
“Yup,” I smiled at her. She laughed and went back to cooking
again. “So you know then. About everything?” I asked.
“You mean the legends?” She questioned.
“Well, I wouldn’t call them legends,” I shrugged.
“Quiluetes descending from wolves aren’t legends?” Emma
challenged.
“No they aren’t. You know perfectly well that they aren’t,” I told
her. “Your dad told you everything I’m guessing.”
“Yes, he did. But what are you trying to get at?” Emma asked.
“You knew about what he once was?” I asked her. She looked up
at me quickly. Her eyes wide with shock. “Yes, I know about your dad.”
“How?” she asked shocked. I just rolled my eyes at her. Her
mouth fell open, but she shut it quickly. “Are you trying to tell me that
you are a werewolf Jacob Black?” She whispered.
“I wasn’t trying to tell you that, but yes I’m a werewolf,” I
chuckled softly at her expression. It wasn’t one of horror. It was just
shock. Obviously Emma didn’t believe her father’s stories.
“Wow. I never would of guessed,” Emma said.
“You wouldn’t of?” I challenged. “Come one. I’m inhumanly hot,
buff, and taller than your average 16 year old.”
“True, but you just don’t seem like what my father told us
werewolves were like,” Emma admitted.
“What did he tell you we were like?” I asked surprised.
“Well, he said that werewolves had no control. He said that the
littlest thing would make them angry, but today when my brother was
insulting you, you were perfectly calm. It’s confusing,” Emma told me.
“Werewolves are out of control and angry when they don’t have
any self-control. It’s mostly like that in the beginning, but I’m not a
young werewolf. I’ve been one for almost a year. Plus I have genetics
on my side,” I laughed.
“What does that mean?” Emma asked confused.
“My great grandfather was the alpha back when there was a
pack. He was able to control an entire group of werewolves and
himself,” I shrugged.
“Emphriam Black?” Emma asked.
“Yeah,” I chuckled.
“This is so weird,” Emma admitted. “My dad use to always tell us
stories and legends of the Quiluete, but I never believed any of it was
true. I mean, I always wondered if it could be. You have no idea how
weird it is to be standing in the same room as something you thought
was a dream.”
“Glad to know I’m your dream guy,” I laughed.
“Very funny,” Emma rolled her eyes. “How’d you know about
everything though?”
“That’s what Sam’s meeting was about,” I told her.
“Wait! Are Quil, Embry, and everyone I met today werewolves
too?” Emma asked shocked.
“Yeah. It’s Sam, Jared, Paul, Embry, Quil, Leah, Seth, Collin,
Brady, and me. We’re a huge pack,” I shrugged.
“Holy crap,” Emma said breathlessly. All I could do was laugh. “Don’t
laugh at me! I just found out that werewolves exist and know I get to
find out that I met 8 today!”
“You took it better than I thought you would,” I chuckled.
“Well, it’s better because I found out at 4. My dad used the
legends as bedtime stories,” Emma rolled her eyes. “I guess that’s
what you get for having a former werewolf as a father.”
“I guess it is,” I laughed.
“I can’t wait to tell Evan that all the stories are true,” Emma said
excitedly. She started to run to the living room, but I caught her
quickly.
“You can’t. It’s a secret. Only the pack, their family, and the ones
they imprint on can know that we exist.,” I told her.
“But Evan and I are family to a werewolf,” Emma pointed out.
“A former werewolf. It’s different,” I informed her.
“Then why can I know?” Emma asked confused, “Wait! Did you
just say imprint on?”
“Yeah?” I asked.
“Imprinting is real?” Emma almost yelled.
“Yeah, it is,” I laughed.
“I can’t believe it! My dad told me stories about it all the time!”
Emma said excitedly. “Whenever a relationship didn’t work out and I
was upset my dad would say that must mean I’m going to be imprinted
on. I never told him that I hoped it would. He thought I didn’t believe in
it, but I always hoped that part of the legends were real!”
“Yeah, they’re real,” I chuckled.
“How come I get to know?” Emma asked again. “Wait a second.”
Emma seemed to be putting it all together in her head.
“I imprinted on you,” I told her slowly.
“Oh my god! That is so cool!” Emma practically yelled. All I could
do was laugh. She didn’t find any of it terrifying. I had braced myself
for screaming.
“Wow. It doesn’t weird you out that I just met you and am
already in love with you?” I asked.
“Nope,” Emma smiled. “Will you tell me everything about
imprinting? My dad never got into details because apparently he never
imprinted.”
I explained what it felt like to imprint to Emma. She had so many
questions about what it meant and what would happen. It felt weird
telling her that we would be together forever and would get married,
but she didn’t seem fazed. I told her that it was already hard to stay
away from her and she just smiled.

Emma glanced at the clock and her eyes widened. We’d been
talking for almost an hour.
“Oh my god! I have to finish dinner,” Emma jumped up quickly
and rushed over to the fridge and grabbed stuff to make a salad. She
quickly put together a salad and grabbed the steak that she had taken
out of the oven and put it in the microwave. “Do you want to stay for
dinner, Jake?”
“Sure,” I rolled my eyes knowing she already knew the answer. I
heard the cruiser pull into the driveway and the car door slam shut.
Charlie’s familiar footsteps filled my ears. I heard the door open and
Charlie’s voice would soon follow.
“Emma! Evan! I’m home!” Charlie shouted. I could hear him
hanging up his gun. Emma motioned for me to follow her to the hall.
Evan was walking into the hall to greet Charlie. Emma was ahead
of me and walked up to Charlie and hugged him quickly. Charlie’s eyes
met mine.
“Charlie, this is--” Emma started, but Charlie cut her off.
“Jake, it’s good to see you again,” Charlie smiled.
“Likewise,” I said lightly. Emma looked to me confused.
“You two know each other?” Emma asked.
“Yup. Jacob’s dad and I are old friends,” Charlie shrugged. “How
is Billy by the way?”
“He’s doing good,” I told him.
“Uh, Jake and I go to school together,” Emma told Charlie.
“That’s right. Jake goes to on the reservation too,” Charlie
smiled.
“Is it okay if Jake stays for dinner?” Emma asked innocently.
“Yeah, that’s a great idea,” Charlie said genuinely happy. Charlie
and Evan walked into the living room and Evan started filling Charlie in
on the game. Emma and I walked back into the kitchen. She turned
towards me with more questions in her eyes.
“Why didn’t you tell me you know Charlie?” Emma asked. She
had a weird tone to her voice that assumed I was hiding something.
“It didn’t seem like a big deal at the time,” I confessed. She went
back to finishing up dinner and handed me plates to set the table.

It was another half hour before dinner was ready. Evan and
Emma filled Charlie in on school and all their classes. It was nice to be
sitting with them and having dinner. Of course before we had started
eating Charlie had me call Billy and invite him down, but he denied.
Charlie was somewhat disappointed. Suddenly the subject I was hoping
to avoid came up. Bella.
“I’m surprised you haven’t asked about Bells yet, Jake,” Charlie
chuckled. “You two used to be attached at the hip.” Emma looked at
me out of the corner of her eye.
“Yeah, things changed,” I admitted to him.
“Don’t tell me you’re still bitter about her and Edward getting
married,” Charlie chuckled. “I mean I know you two loved each other at
one time. Bells told me, but it’s been almost a month.”
“No I’m not bitter about it. I never was,” I said slowly. Now I
could feel Evan and Emma staring at me.
“Jake, you ran away when you found out. I think you were bitter
about it,” Charlie laughed.
“It was just a shock. I didn’t’ think she would marry a guy like
Cullen,” I lied. Well technically it wasn’t a lie. I didn’t think Bella would
be able to marry a vampire.
“Edward’s a good guy, Jake,” Charlie confessed. “I know for a
fact that Bella doesn’t want you to be upset over it.”
“I’m not upset, Charlie. Honestly I’m not,” I assured not only him,
but Emma. I could feel her looking at me still. It was uncomfortable to
talk about Bella while sitting next to Emma.
After a painful conversation of talking about Bella, Charlie
finished his dinner and put his plate in the sink. He walked to the living
room to watch a game. Evan went to his room to do his small amount
of homework. I was left with the endless questions that would be
coming from Emma. I helped her with the dishes and prepared myself.
“You and Bella were in love?” she asked.
“Yeah,” I told her.
“For how long?” she question.
“Not long. Just while Edward had left her and right before they
got married,” I admitted. Emma looked shocked and hurt. I hated
seeing her like that.
“I wish you told me,” Emma said.
“I don’t like to talk about it. It’s complicated,” I told her. Emma
just looked at me as if to urge me on, but I looked at the clock. It read
8 o’clock. I had to get home and do my homework before I came back
here to run patrol with Embry and Quil at 9. I wouldn’t be done till at
least 4 and I can’t stay up all night. I have school in the morning. “I’m
sorry. I have to go,”
“Okay,” Emma said sadly. I could see the sadness in her eyes
and it hurt to see it. We walked to the door and Emma shut it behind
her. We stood there and look into each other’s eyes for a while. Slowly,
I moved in. Emma reached up and wrapped her arms around my neck.
My arms wound around her waist and I lifted her up slightly. Her eyes
slowly closed at the same time mine did. My lips found hers.
This kiss was nothing like I’d ever experienced. It was filled with
more passion than I’d ever known. The kiss was sweet and tender. I
pulled her closer to me, but I wanted her closer. Emma pulled away too
soon. I could see the sparkle in her eye and I knew she felt the passion
too. She released my neck, but my arms stayed tight around her waist.
“Good night, Jacob. I’ll see you at school,” Emma smiled. She
tried to pull out of my iron grasp, but failed.
“Werewolf strength, remember?” I chuckled. She just rolled her
eyes at me. My arms unwound from around her waist and she pulled
away. I turned around unwillingly and walked to my car. I looked back
at the house and saw her standing in the doorway. She smiled and I
climbed into my car and drove away.
7. Nothing sucks more than patrol…

I thought that maybe I could escape Billy, but he was sitting in

the kitchen when I got home. He looked up at me from the paper. I
knew he was full of questions.
“Okay, so I’m just going to ask you this one question. What on
Earth were you doing at the Swans’?” Billy asked.
I told Billy everything that had happened today. I told him about
imprinting on Emma. I told him about the meeting at Sam’s. The entire
time that I was explaining everything to Billy his face was unreadable.
After I was done telling him everything, we sat in an uncomfortable
silence.
“You imprinted on Charlie’s god daughter,” Billy said. “That’s not
good, Jake.”
“That’s not the problem!” I shouted. “Didn’t you listen to
anything I just told you? Vampires are after Emma and her brother!
They could be killed!”
“But they won’t be, son. Not as long as the pack is involved,”
Billy said calmly. Sometimes I think Billy has a little too much faith in
the pack.
“I have to go get my homework done. I’ll probably sleep for a
little. I have patrol at 9 o’clock,” I told him.
I walked past Billy to my room. I sat down at my desk and started
my homework. I had to fill out 2 sheets about myself. It took me only
ten minutes. I decided to sleep until 9. I crawled into bed and in no
time at all fell asleep.

I woke up and look at the clock. It said 9:15. I jumped out of bed
and ran out my door.
“Jake, is everything alright?” Billy asked me amused.
“I’m late. I had patrol at 9,” I told him. I rushed out the door. I
didn’t bother to drive so I just broke into a sprint. Running at my full
speed felt so good after being at school all day. I ran through trees and
once I got closer to the forks line I started to shed my clothes. I tied
them around my ankle and I morphed into a wolf. It’s a lot easier to
change now. I don’t just have to be angry, but I can be calm and
centered.
Jake, where have you been? Embry asked.
Sorry! I fell asleep. I told them. I still can’t get over how we can
talk to each other through our minds when were in our wolf form. Yes
it’s helpful, but it’s also annoying. They can read everything you think
about.
I’ll leave Emma’s. You can run closer there. Quil told me. I could
see the images he saw fly by. I raced to Emma’s and checked to see if
anything was out of the ordinary.
What? You don’t trust me? Quil asked hurt. I have been running
here since we started.
I trust you. I’m just double checking. I told him honestly. I do
trust Quil, but sometimes he does miss things.
We were running for an hour when Emma’s bedroom light turned
on. I stopped and looked up. She was standing in front of the window.
She pushed it open and leaned over it. She was staring at the stars for
a while. I could feel that Embry and Quil had slowed down to pay closer
attention to what I saw. Emma looked in the direction I was. I decided
no harm would come to show her I was here.
Jake! Don’t! Embry warned.
Why not? What’s the worst that could happen? I snapped. I took
a cautious step out of the woods and stood in the path. Emma stared
with wide eyes.
I told you. Embry said. You really think that just because she
knows you’re a werewolf she isn’t going to be freaked out. Did you
even tell her that we would be running patrol here?
Oops. It totally slipped my mind. I can’t believe it. She probably
doesn’t even know it’s me.
Probably not. Phase and then come out again. Quil suggested.
Alright, but keep a close eye out. I told them. I took a few steps
back into the woods. I felt the fire decreasing from inside me. I became
myself again and pulled my jeans back on. I walked casually out of the
woods and stood in to middle of the street. Emma was still in the
window, but instead of looking terrified she just looked confused.
“I hope I didn’t scare you,” I told her honestly.
“Wait. Was that you?” She asked astounded.
“Yeah,” I laughed.
“Wait right there,” She told me. She backed away from the
window. I heard her shut her bedroom door. A minute later she was
opening the front door silently.
“Sorry. Did I scare you?” I asked with a chuckle.
“Uh.. What do you think? I giant wolf comes out of the woods
across from my house. No, I wasn’t scared at all,” she snapped. She
sat down on the steps and started starring up at the sky. I walked over
and sat next to her. She never took her eyes off the sky. I watched her
for a little.
“Stop watching me. It’s creepy,” she laughed. When she turned
her head toward me, I noticed there was a tear rolling down her cheek.
“What’s wrong?” I asked. I knew she couldn’t have been crying
from laughing.
“It’s nothing,” She quickly brushed the tear away. I got up and
knelt in front of her. She avoided making eye contact with me. It killed
me to see her like this.
“You can tell me anything. You know that right?” I asked her. She
nodded, but didn’t look at me. I reached under her chin and pulled her
face towards mine. “Whatever it is, if it’s making you upset then it isn’t
nothing.”
“My parents. I can’t help it. I thinking about them every night,
but I don’t know. I guess when you told me about everything it just
triggered something. It brought back all the memories of my dad and
his stories,” she sighed. Her eyes started to water again.
“I’m so sorry,” I scooped her into my arms and just held her for a
while. “I really didn’t mean to upset you by telling you. It wasn’t my
intension at all. I just thought you should know since I am going to be
around a lot.”
“You are?” She lifted her head and stared me straight in to eyes.
Underneath the sadness there, I saw relief. She was glad I’d be around
for her.
“I promise,” I assured her.
“Then I guess you have time to answer some of my questions,”
she laughed. Her eyes started to brighten, but they weren’t even close
to containing the brightness I saw in the picture of her earlier. It broke
my heart to think that maybe that brightness won’t ever return and
that it left when her parents were killed.
“Shoot. I’ve got time,” I smiled. She smiled right along with me. I
braced myself for the endless questions that would come from her and
for the painful ones I knew she wanted to ask.
“You loved Bella. I want to know everything. How long? How
much? Why’d you stop?” She began firing the questions at me.
“Jeez. Enough questions,” I laughed. “And yeah, I did love her.
How much? I loved her enough to hurt whenever Edward was around
and whenever she was hurting. I hated to see her be forced to choose
between Edward and myself, especially since I knew who she would
choose. I guess I loved her my whole life, but not the way you think.
She was like a sister to me, but when Edward left she needed me and
somewhere along my feelings for her just changed. I still love her and I
think I always will. I know you don’t want to hear that, but it’s true.”
“You didn’t answer one of them,” she said. She was just looking
at me. Her face was expressionless.
“Why’d I stop? I told you I didn’t. I mean I guess I stopped in
some way. She got married. She chose Edward over me. I never
thought she would be with a guy like Cullen. It’s disgusting,” I was
getting all worked up just thinking about Edward. My body tensed and
my vision was becoming red. I could feel my body start to shake. I had
to sit Emma away from me. I got up and started pacing back and forth.
“I’m sorry. Did I get you upset?” She stood up and started to
walk over to me. Emma had and alarmed expression on her face.
“Don’t come any closer,” I ordered. She froze. I could feel the
authority in my voice and I knew she could too.
“Is everything okay?” I heard her ask. I slowed my breathing and
took bigger breathes. I stopped shaking and looked toward Emma. She
had a horrified expression on her face. It seemed as if she figured out
what was happening. I decided not to get any closer to her knowing
she must be scared. She rushed toward me and wrapped her arms
around me.
“I am so sorry! I didn't mean to get you upset,” she cried. I stood
there for a second. Emma wasn't horrified with me but rather herself.
“That wasn't your fault,” I told her astounded. I bent down and
wrapped my arms around her waist. I picked her up slightly.
“It was though. If I hadn't asked to talk about Bella you wouldn't
have gotten so angry,” she told me.
“I should have known talking about Cullen would do that,” I
shrugged. I put Emma down and unwrapped my arms. I heard a howl
in the distance and my head snapped up.
“What was that?” Emma asked alarmed. She looked up at me
with pleading eyes. She’s scared and it’s my job to protect her.
“Go in the house now. Make sure all the doors and windows are
locked. I'll explain later. I promise. Just do this one thing for me and I'll
be back as soon as I can,” I told her. I started backing away from her.
“Jake, what’s going on?” she asked.
“Please just do what I said,” I nodded my head toward to door.
She turned around and walked inside. She stood in the doorway for a
second, but I nodded again and she closed the door.
8. I could just kill something
I sprinted toward the woods. Quickly shed my jeans and phased.
I ran toward where Embry had last been.
What’s going on? I asked. I wasn’t sure if I really wanted to know
the answer.
Did you guys find something? Jared suddenly asked. My head
felt very crowded all of a sudden. I could feel Sam and Paul too.
Embry got wind of something. I’m meeting him. He’s closer to
the border of La Push. Quil informed us. I could see trees rushing past
him through his eyes.
Paul head toward Jake. Jake stay near Emma’s. Jared and I will
meet Embry and Quil. Seth, Leah, Brady, and Colin just continue
running. If we need anything else we’ll howl. Sam ordered.
After the order I droned everyone out but Paul. I could hear his
footfalls as he raced toward me. Soon I was face to face with him. He
eyes were wild with excitement. I doubt mine held the same. I was too
busy worrying for Emma.
Want me to check out the back of the house? Paul asked.
Yeah, that’s a good idea. I’ll check out here. Make sure there’s
no unfamiliar smells. I tried to stay calm and not let on how nervous I
really am. Even though Paul could probably tell.
I started checking around the front of the house. I felt Paul
freeze. I rushed to the back of the house in case he found something. I
saw his eyes locked on the house.
Dude, what’s wrong? Did you find something? I felt myself start
to panick.
I think she saw me. I’m not sure though. She was looking out the
window and started backing up slowly. She knows right? I could tell he
was panicking. He didn’t want to blow the secret.
Yeah, she knows. I’m gonna go talk to her. I told Paul. Sam. I’m
going to go talk to Emma. Fill her in. I was with her when Embry
howled. Could you send Seth here to check things out with Paul? I
really hoped Sam wouldn’t say know. He has to understand though. He
be going crazy too if he was in my position.
Yeah, of course. Seth you heard him. Head over there. I could
hear the understanding in his voice.
I nodded to Paul and ran into the woods were I phased back. I
walked back out and Paul was gone. I jogged up to the back door. I
lightly knocked. I could see Emma jump in the living room. She turned
around slowly and her shoulders relaxed when she saw it was me. I
quickly walked over and unlocked the door. She walked back to the
couch and sat down. I let myself in and made sure to lock the door
behind me. She looked terrified, which was understandable.
“You okay?” I asked hesitantly. I tried to read her face.
“What happened?” She avoided my question. She looked up at
me and her face was blank.
“Embry caught wind of something,” I decided it was better to be
honest with her.
“Shouldn’t you be out there then?” I could hear the confusion in
her voice. I sat down next to her.
“Sam told me to stay here while check it out. Paul and Seth are
out there. They’ll let me know if something goes down,” I told her.
“Why would you need to stay here?” She asked. I completely
forget to tell her about everything. Now, I’m not so sure I want to.
What if she freaks out?
“Your parents,” I said.
“Why does everything lead back to my parents?” I could tell her
hurt her every time she talked about them.
“Emma, I don’t want to worry you,” I said.
“You’re worrying me more by not telling me,” She looked at me
with her eyes pleading. I don’t want to keep things from her, but I just
don’t know how she’ll react.
“Okay, but don’t freak out until I tell you everything. Promise?” I
asked
“Promise,” she said honestly.
“Okay well, when your dad was a werewolf, he killed a vampire.
He thought she was one her own, but it turns out she wasn’t. The rest
of the coven came after your dad. The day your mom and dad were
killed you and your brother weren’t there, so you two were safe. The
coven killed you parents but not before they saw pictures of you and
Evan,” I took a deep breath once it was all out.
“So they’re after me and Evan now?” She asked. I could read her
expression. She sounded calm, but I wasn’t completely sure.
“Unfortunately. You don’t need to worry though. We’re here
looking out for you guys. The leeches won’t get past us,” I said without
missing a beat.
“You Promise?” Emma looked at me with pleading eyes.
“I promise. Those parasites won’t get past us,” I said with a giant
smile. I could see her eyes brighten and she smiled at me.
“What the hell is going on down here?” I whipped my head
around and found Evan standing in the doorway with his arms crossed.
“Evan, we need to talk. It’s important,” She stood up. Evan just
kept staring at me. He didn’t look happy, which is understandable.
“Looks like that’s my cue. I’ll see you tomorrow,” I started to
walk toward the door, but Emma grabbed my arm.
“No don’t go,” She begged. Her eyes looked huge and she
seemed scared. Evan just stared at her hand on my arm. “You
promised.”
I sat back down and Evan came to sit across from me. Emma sat
next to him and looked at me expectantly. I knew she wanted me to
tell him everything. I weighed both sides for a second. He needed to
know what was going on. I’d probably get crap for it later, but I’ll take
my chances. I filled him in on everything. About the legends that
actually weren’t legends. His dad’s logic in leaving. The vampires that
killed his parents and how now they were after him and Emma. We all
sat silently for a minute. Evan started to laugh. Emma jumped.
“You’re joking right?” He laughed.
“No I’m not,” I said. I waited for him to answer. He slowly
stopped laughing.
“You are aware that none of those legends are true right. I mean,
come on. People that can turn into wolves. That’s ridiculous. And
seriously? You’re going to bring my parents into that joke. That’s
disgusting,” Evan looked angry now. His body started to shake. I knew
that all too well. Evan was in his early stages. Emma grabbed his arm.
“Emma don’t,” I warned. I could hear the authority in my voice.
She dropped his arm quickly. “Evan, you need to control yourself.
There’s more.” Emma looked at me. Evan slowly regained himself.
“What do you mean there’s more?” he asked.
“I’ve been there. What just happened has happened to me and
the rest of the pack,” I told him. He stared at me blankly and so did
Emma.
“Are you trying to tell me you’re a werewolf?” Evan slowly asked.
“And that I am too?”
“Yeah and no. You aren’t yet,” I told him. Emma got up and
walked out of the room. Probably to regain her composure. She wasn’t
ready for this conversation.
“What does that mean? Yet?” he asked.
“I’m guessing you’re feeling angry all the time. Your body
temperature is higher than normal and whenever you get to angry you
shake and see red. Am I right?” I asked. His face slowly started to look
scared. He looked up at me with pleading eyes. He didn’t want me to
be right. I understood. I had been there.
“This can’t be happening,” he mumbled. He got up and started
pacing back and forth.
“There are others you know. We aren’t the only ones. You can
talk to Sam,” I told him. He stopped pacing and looked at me.
“How many others? Who’s Sam?” He pleaded.
“Including me there are 10. Sam’s alpha. He keeps everyone in
check,” I told him.
“10?” He asked astounded.
“Yeah, we’re a big pack. Don’t worry though. We’re all here for
you,” I assured him. A howl sounded and both our heads snapped in
that direction. Emma ran into the room. Her eyes were wide. Evan
walked over to her and hugged her. I jumped out of my seat and ran
toward the back door. Paul and Seth were standing there impatiently. I
opened the door and turned toward Evan. “Lock the door.” I jumped
through the door and phased on the fly. There go my jeans. I heard the
door lock and took off running with Paul and Seth.
What happened? I demanded.
They caught the scent. No one recognizes it. Embry sniff it again
and see if Jake knows it. Sam said. The smell filled my head. It reeked,
but I’d never smelled it.
I don’t remember that one. I raced toward Embry and Quil.
Jake what happened. I saw Emma look terrified. Seth asked.
Everything went flying through my head at once.
You told her?! Paul all about shouted at me.
Relax. She has a right to know. Sam assured him.
That’s not it though. I played the whole scene through my head.
The rest of the pack tensed.
I should of guessed. Was as all Sam said. Something blurred my
vision as if it ran in front of me. I skidded to a stop and Paul and Seth
did the same. I saw something pale white run to the right of us. We
took off after it.
Follow it. We’ll meet up with you. We’ll attack from all sides.
Sam said.
Everyone took off in different directions. Embry and Quil ran from
the border. Sam and Jared from 100 feet behind them. Colin, Brady,
and Leah came from the cliffs over the beach. Whatever vampire that
was is about to get a rude awakening. I took the front with Paul and
Seth on my flanks about 5 feet behind.
Jake, look out! Seth yelled. I turned to the right and saw a huge
figure racing toward me. I turned and charged at it.
“Stop!” Someone yelled. The figure froze. I did too and Paul and
Seth froze on my flanks. They both faced opposite directions checking
for the vampire that yelled the order. I had a sickening feeling we were
surrounded.
A white figure walked out to me left and another to me right.
Paul and Seth growled. The three figures were too far away for me to
make them out.
“I’m sorry,” the figure to the left said. It started walking closer
and I froze. Edward took another step toward me. I felt Seth relax and I
snarled. “We had no idea it was you.” The figure ahead of me stepped
closer and I notice it was the bigger of the Cullen brothers. I couldn’t
remember his name. Not that I cared anyway.
“Yeah man, sorry. Thought you were someone else,” He
shrugged.
“Emmett,” Edward cautioned. He walked even close and stood
next to Emmett. The third figure shifted uncomfortable. My head was
dead silent. The rest of the pack quickened their pace to get here
sooner. Sam wasn’t too far away. Seth seemed perfectly at ease and it
bugged me. Paul just growled.
Suddenly I felt Sam leap out of the woods. He landed next to me
and tensed his body.
What are you doing out here? Sam spat. Sure, we had a truce,
but that was before. This is now.
“Hunting. We were on our way back when we heard something,”
Edward said. The third figure stepped closer to Edward. Edward
reached out his hand and the figure ran to take it. The rest of the pack
arrived and we all froze. Bella Swan was standing in front of me.
Oh shit. Paul was the only one to speak, but we all agreed.
We apologize for ambushing you, but we need to be careful and
follow through. Sam said. I could see him trying to piece everything
together. I looked at Bella and she smile. She was standing there hard
as stone. Her skin was pale and her eyes a dark red.
“Of course. We understand completely,” Edward nodded. I
couldn’t stop staring at Bella. Edward whipped his head in another
direction and sent his smell toward us. It was rancid. I wrinkled my
nose in disgust. Another figure came running toward us. Carlisle
stepped next to Emmett.
“Is everything okay here?” He asked. He looked at each of us.
Emmett did too as well as Edward.
“I have to agree. You all wouldn’t be out together is something
wasn’t terribly wrong,” Edward stated.
Give me one second. Sam started backing up. He was in the
safety of the trees when I felt him phase. He stepped out into view.
The rest of use shifted uncomfortably. Sam began filling the Cullens in.
I understood. This was their home. They could help in some small way.
I saw Bella shift and then it hit me. The rest of the pack froze. The
smell Embry had picked up before was hers.
