8. I could just kill something
The first half of the day passed in a blur. I can remember sitting
in my history class and feeling a pulling force. I ignored it for quite
some time, but it continued. I had history first period too! I was
focused to try and control the pull for the entire morning. By lunch I
was exhausted already. As I walked out the door of my Spanish class, I
saw Embry, Quil, and Paul waiting for me by my locker. I made my way
slowly towards them.
“Whoa, Jake man. Are you alright? You don’t look so hot,” Paul
stated. I could tell he was in a good mood. Probably because the
freshman had been checking him out, knowing him. Of course that
thought didn’t please me too much. He was supposed to be eternally
bound to my sister Rachel, but Paul can’t change all of his ways.
“Yeah, whatever. I’m fine,” I claimed slowly.
“Are you sure man? We could walk you too the nurse,” Embry
shot in. I could not do that though. The nurse would most likely take
my temperature and she’d find it at a blazing 109 degrees and I would
be sent to the hospital right away. After I had gone through the scene
in my head, it was obvious Embry had realized his mistake.
“I’m fine. I swear,” I retorted. “Let’s just get to lunch.”
We made our way down the familiar hallway towards the
cafeteria. The four of us got in line and grabbed our food. We walked to
our usual table. Jared and Kim, who are seniors this year, were already
seated. Along with Seth, who is a sophomore, and Collin and Brady,
who are freshmen.
“Took you guys long enough!” Seth practically jumped out of his
seat. “I had to sit here with these two lovers for ten minutes.”
Paul and Quil chuckled loudly. Jared and Kim slowly joined in. It
feels uncomfortable being around my brothers. Most of them have
already imprinted. Seth, Embry, Collin, Brady, and I are the only ones
to have not imprinted. Well, Leah too, but it’s different with her.
Everyone was talking about the day’s events. Collin and Brady
were going on about how some senior girls had checked them out. The
pulling force started to build slowly; it was getting stronger every
second. I could barely take it anymore. I looked up from my food to see
if any of the others felt it, but if they did they didn’t let it show.
“Do you guys feel that?” I asked suddenly. Everyone’s eyes
turned toward me. They were looking at me as if I were going crazy.
That is likely, but I doubt it.
“Feel what?” Jared asked slowly and cautiously. His eyes drifted
back and forth checking if there was any danger in the area.
“That pulling force. I’ve felt it all morning, but I tried to control it.
It just keeps getting stronger,” I said. I decided it would be a good idea
to tell the truth.
Jared was about the say something, but cut himself off. He
exchanged glances with Paul and Quil. I couldn’t take it anymore. The
look in their eyes told me they didn’t feel it, but they understood. Just
as I felt I was about to scream the force got even stronger. It seemed
like it could lift me out of my seat. I looked in the direction that I
thought the force was pulling me in. I turned to see a strikingly
beautiful blonde girl making her way across the cafeteria.
The girl was breathtaking. She had long blonde hair that flowed
easily around her face and stopped at her shoulder blades. It was
curly, yet wavy at the same time. She turned towards another girl. A
brunette and laughed at something she had said. The other girl was
nothing compared to her. The blonde had to be 5’2”. She was short
with a petite figure. Her curves were visible. She turned towards
another girl. Her turn gave me a full view of her face.
Suddenly, it seemed as if I was floating. Everything I was
worrying about drifted away from me. All the bad events that had
taken place over the past year didn’t seem to matter anymore. The
only thing that mattered was the breathtaking beauty across the room.
My life had seemed to be a mess for so long, but in that instant
everything fell into place. I felt whole once again. I didn’t worry about
Bella anymore. She slipped out to the back of my mind. Slowly my
whole mind was being used to analyze her every move. Suddenly, it
felt as if everything was slipping away from me. Everything that tied
me to the Earth and everything that made me Jacob Black started
flying away from me. But all of a sudden something held everything
into place. It was her. She easily took her place into my heart and I
didn’t even know her name. I started drifting back down to reality.
“Jake, man. What’s up with you?” Embry worried. He looked over
at Quil who just shrugged and looked back at me.
“Whoa,” I said breathlessly. That was the only word that was
able to escape me lips.
Slowly everyone at the table follow me gaze to the beautiful
blonde. Jared, Paul, and Quil seemed to understand immediately. It
took the rest of them a second to realize it, but they did.
“No, Jake! Not you too!” Seth cried.
“Hey, he can’t control it. None of us can,” Jared shrugged as if it
were no big deal. It seemed that due to the look on Paul’s he didn’t
think it was either. I turned my unwilling eyes away from the blonde
and looked to Quil. He looked at me with amused eyes.
“Amazing isn’t it?” Quil asked. His eyes seemed to be
somewhere else. Probably remembering when he had imprinted on
Claire.
“Amazing doesn’t come close to covering her,” I replied weakly.
Jared Paul, Quil, and Kim laughed for a minute or two.
“So, Emma huh?” Quil asked casually. “She is pretty.”
Pretty didn’t come close to her. It took me a minute to realize
that he knew her.
“You know her?” I asked abruptly.
Quil chuckled by my response. “Sure. She’s in my history and
Literature class,” Quil stated.
“Dude, you’re going to give him a heart attack. Get her over here
for him,” Jared ordered Quil.
“Hey, Emma! Come Here!” Quil yelled across the cafeteria. A
couple of freshmen looked over at us, but Emma looked up confused.
She saw Quil standing up waving for her to come over. She smiled a
breathtaking smile and made her way across the café.
“Hey, Quil. What’s up?” Emma asked Quil. She looked around the
table at each of us. She was even more beautiful up close and her
voice sent shivers down my spine.
“Nothing. Do you want to sit with us?” Quil asked her casually.
He pulled a chair up between him and me.
“Uh, sure. Why not?” Emma asked to no one in particular.
Quil started introducing Emma to each of us. She said hello to
everyone timidly.
“Hello, Jacob,” Emma said after Quil had introduced me. Hearing
my name come from her mouth gave me goose bumps.
By the end of lunch I learned that her name was Emma Carter.
She moved to La Push from Malibu, which explained how tan she was.
She was a junior here. She was 16 years old and had an older brother,
Evan. He is a senior and in some of Jared and Kim’s classes.
By the time lunch was over I had gotten to know all the basic
things about her, but I wanted to know more. We all started walking
back towards our lockers and Emma separated from to rest of us as
her locker came up. I stayed behind to talk to her more.
“What class do you have next?” I asked her. I prayed for my life
that she had Biology next.
“Uh,” Emma looking through her paper quickly and then
skimmed her schedule. “Biology.”
“Me too,” I said. I hope my excitement wasn’t to noticeable.
“Great. At least I’ll know one person in that class,” Emma
laughed casually.
“If you need help finding it, I could walk you there. I just need to
go to my locker first,” I told her. My voice shook a little with fear of her
reply.
“That would be nice, Jacob,” she answered warmly.
We made our way down the hallway towards my locker. I found
Embry leaning casually against it.
“Hey bro! Ready for bio?” Embry asked. I’d forgotten we both
had bio this period.
“Uh, yeah. Hold on though. I have to get my stuff,” I answered
him. Embry looked from me to Emma quickly and shot me an
approving glance.
“Hey, Emma. I’m Embry.” As he introduced himself, I grabbed
my books quickly and shut my locker. We started making our way to
biology.
“Yeah I know. I met you at lunch,” She stated and flashed him a
smile.
“Oh yeah. I forgot,” Embry laughed. I didn’t understand how he
could forget a girl like Emma. We walked into the biology room and Mr.
Turner glanced at each of us.
“The sheet with the name of your lab partner is on the back
board,” Mr. Turner told us slowly.
“Embry! You’re my partner!” Lisa Brown shouted. She had a
crush on Embry for as long as I could remember. I looked to Embry to
see he had a polite, but obviously disappointed smile on his face.
I walked over to the partner sheet and scrolled down for my
name. Once I found it I looked across from my name and there was
Emma’s name. I couldn’t believe it. I’d been hoping we’d be partners,
but I’m usually never partners with the person I want.
Emma walked up next to me. She found her name next to mine
and turned to smile at me.
“Looks like we’re partners Jake,” She smiled and it looked as if
she was truly happy.
We sat down at the empty table behind Embry and Lisa. He
turned around and gave me a wink. I fought against my smile, but of
course I lost.
Before I could say anything to Emma or Embry, Mr. Turner
started on with his lecture. He went on about books and assignments.
He handed out papers listing what we would be going over and what
kinds of things we would be doing. He told us that the partners we had
would be our permanent partners. I couldn’t be happier. Embry on the
other hand shot me a worried glance. I felt bad he had to be partners
with Lisa for our whole Junior year. I could feel Emma looking over at
me. I turned to look at her and she turned away quickly and her cheeks
started to grow red.
3. Isn’t this supposed to stop?
Finally, after two more hours I was able to go home. I had to sit
in Calculus with worried glances from Embry and Emma for an hour.
After, I had Gym with Paul and Embry. Embry had told Paul about my
freak out in biology, so I had to deal with more glances from both of
them.
I was at my locker, when Jared walked over with Kim. I took a
minute before I looked up worried about the look that would be on
their faces. I took my time putting all my books away and grabbed my
extremely light bag. Of course we had very little homework; We had
only been assigned homework on filling out papers about ourselves.
When I finally looked up, Jared and Kim looked pretty much the way
they always do.
“Sam called. He said he wanted us to meet at his house. Said it
was important,” Jared informed me.
“Alright. I’ll be there,” I told him. I slung my bag over my
shoulder and closed my locker. Jared started to walk away while
holding Kim’s hand, but he turned around.
“Jake, Are you alright?” He asked slowly. I was afraid this would
be coming.
“Why? What did Embry tell you?” I asked. Of course Embry would
tell the pack.
“He just told us about your little freak out in biology,” He
shrugged like it was no big deal. He didn’t act the same as Embry and
Paul had.
“Of course. Don’t worry about it. I’m fine,” I assured him.
Jared smiled and walked away with Kim. I walked towards the
front doors to meet Embry and Quil by the Rabbit. I heard two people
arguing and turned in the direction it was coming from. I saw Emma
arguing with a large blonde boy. He was a lot taller than her. He was
probably 6’4” or 6’5” if anything. He was tan and muscular. His body
was shaking a little. As I saw this, I had the urge to get in his face. I
walked over slowly, so it didn’t look like I was about to ripe him to
pieces.
“Everything okay over here?” I asked both of them, but had my
eyes locked on the boy.
“Yeah. Everything is fine. Evan’s just being a jerk,” Emma
assured me. Evan, looked at me smugly. Evan was her brother. Now
that I looked at him closely I could see the resemblance.
“Yeah, dude. You have no reason to worry. Run along with your
little friends,” Evan told me. He rolled his eyes. I thought about
punching him in the face, but realized that it probably wouldn’t be such
a good idea.
“Evan, don’t be rude!” Emma shouted. “Why do you always have
to be such a jerk?”
“I’m not being a jerk. I just don’t think your little friend should
get into our business,” Evan replied exasperated.
“You’re calling me little?” I asked him confused.
“I’m sorry I just don’t want to ride in your car with that girl you
met at the beach. She’s annoying. I’m not dealing with her for the ride
home,” she told him.
“Then don’t! You can walk home then,” Evan shouted at her.
“You don’t have to walk, Emma. I’ll give you a ride home,” I shot
in.
“No, Jake. Thanks, but you don’t have to go out of your way,” she
told me.
“No, really. Don’t worry about it. It isn‘t a big deal,” I explained. I
wasn’t going to let her in the car with this jackass.
“Are you sure?” Emma asked. I could tell that she would rather,
but she felt bad about having me do this.
“Yeah! No big deal,” I told her again. I pulled her away from her
brother and pushed open the front doors. She looked over at me a few
times. I could see Embry and Quil by the Rabbit.
“Sorry, Jake. Evan can be a little overbearing,” Emma apologized.
“Don’t worry about it. I deal with jerks all the time,” I shrugged. I
heard her laugh lightly beside me.
We reached the car. Embry and Quil exchanged looks with each
other, when they saw Emma with me.
“Did Jared tell you Sam called yet?” Embry asked me.
“Yeah he did. I’ll drop you guys off over there, then drive Emma
home and I’ll be there,” I informed them. “Emma’s brother was being a
jerk to her, so I said I’d give her a ride.”
“Hey, Emma. How’s it going?” Quil asked her.
“I’m good, thanks. How about you?” Emma asked politely.
“Great,” Quil replied.
The car ride was quiet, but short. The only things said were by
Embry and Quil talking about the game last night. After Embry and Quil
walked into Sam’s, I turned to Emma.
“Where to?” I asked her.
“Uh, Forks,” She told me. She looked past my head. That was
most likely the reason for her hesitation earlier. She didn’t want me to
have to go out of my way.
“You live in Forks?” I asked. There was a tug in my chest as I said
the town’s name. I moved the car out of park and started towards the
highway.
“Yeah. My uncle lives there,” Emma replied. “I’m sorry. I told you
that you’d be going out of your way.”
“Don’t worry about it,” I shrugged. It was no big deal. I didn’t
mind driving her home. “So you live with your uncle?”
“Uh, yeah. My parents died this summer, so my brother and I had
to move in with my uncle. He’s cool though. I don’t mind,” Emma
explained.
“That sucks about your parents. I’m sorry. I lost my mom when I
was younger. How’d your parents die?” After I said it, I thought about
how it might make her upset to tell me. “You don’t have to tell me if
you don’t want to.”
“No, it’s fine. They were murdered,” Emma told me quietly. She
looked down as she answered. “I’m sorry about your mom.”
“Thanks, but I don’t really remember her.” I decided not to press
more about her parents.
We got off the highway and I looked to her. She met my eyes
and I noticed that they were a beautiful blue. They were as blue as the
ocean on a sunny day at the La Push Beach. Her eyes looked sad. I
broke my heart to see them like that.
“Keep going straight then talk a right. Go straight for a while
longer and take a left. It’s the first house on the right,” She told me
glumly.
I thought about the directions as I followed them. They seemed
so familiar. I pulled up to a small house and looked at it.
Emma glanced at the clock and her eyes widened. We’d been
talking for almost an hour.
“Oh my god! I have to finish dinner,” Emma jumped up quickly
and rushed over to the fridge and grabbed stuff to make a salad. She
quickly put together a salad and grabbed the steak that she had taken
out of the oven and put it in the microwave. “Do you want to stay for
dinner, Jake?”
“Sure,” I rolled my eyes knowing she already knew the answer. I
heard the cruiser pull into the driveway and the car door slam shut.
Charlie’s familiar footsteps filled my ears. I heard the door open and
Charlie’s voice would soon follow.
“Emma! Evan! I’m home!” Charlie shouted. I could hear him
hanging up his gun. Emma motioned for me to follow her to the hall.
Evan was walking into the hall to greet Charlie. Emma was ahead
of me and walked up to Charlie and hugged him quickly. Charlie’s eyes
met mine.
“Charlie, this is--” Emma started, but Charlie cut her off.
“Jake, it’s good to see you again,” Charlie smiled.
“Likewise,” I said lightly. Emma looked to me confused.
“You two know each other?” Emma asked.
“Yup. Jacob’s dad and I are old friends,” Charlie shrugged. “How
is Billy by the way?”
“He’s doing good,” I told him.
“Uh, Jake and I go to school together,” Emma told Charlie.
“That’s right. Jake goes to on the reservation too,” Charlie
smiled.
“Is it okay if Jake stays for dinner?” Emma asked innocently.
“Yeah, that’s a great idea,” Charlie said genuinely happy. Charlie
and Evan walked into the living room and Evan started filling Charlie in
on the game. Emma and I walked back into the kitchen. She turned
towards me with more questions in her eyes.
“Why didn’t you tell me you know Charlie?” Emma asked. She
had a weird tone to her voice that assumed I was hiding something.
“It didn’t seem like a big deal at the time,” I confessed. She went
back to finishing up dinner and handed me plates to set the table.
It was another half hour before dinner was ready. Evan and
Emma filled Charlie in on school and all their classes. It was nice to be
sitting with them and having dinner. Of course before we had started
eating Charlie had me call Billy and invite him down, but he denied.
Charlie was somewhat disappointed. Suddenly the subject I was hoping
to avoid came up. Bella.
“I’m surprised you haven’t asked about Bells yet, Jake,” Charlie
chuckled. “You two used to be attached at the hip.” Emma looked at
me out of the corner of her eye.
“Yeah, things changed,” I admitted to him.
“Don’t tell me you’re still bitter about her and Edward getting
married,” Charlie chuckled. “I mean I know you two loved each other at
one time. Bells told me, but it’s been almost a month.”
“No I’m not bitter about it. I never was,” I said slowly. Now I
could feel Evan and Emma staring at me.
“Jake, you ran away when you found out. I think you were bitter
about it,” Charlie laughed.
“It was just a shock. I didn’t’ think she would marry a guy like
Cullen,” I lied. Well technically it wasn’t a lie. I didn’t think Bella would
be able to marry a vampire.
“Edward’s a good guy, Jake,” Charlie confessed. “I know for a
fact that Bella doesn’t want you to be upset over it.”
“I’m not upset, Charlie. Honestly I’m not,” I assured not only him,
but Emma. I could feel her looking at me still. It was uncomfortable to
talk about Bella while sitting next to Emma.
After a painful conversation of talking about Bella, Charlie
finished his dinner and put his plate in the sink. He walked to the living
room to watch a game. Evan went to his room to do his small amount
of homework. I was left with the endless questions that would be
coming from Emma. I helped her with the dishes and prepared myself.
“You and Bella were in love?” she asked.
“Yeah,” I told her.
“For how long?” she question.
“Not long. Just while Edward had left her and right before they
got married,” I admitted. Emma looked shocked and hurt. I hated
seeing her like that.
“I wish you told me,” Emma said.
“I don’t like to talk about it. It’s complicated,” I told her. Emma
just looked at me as if to urge me on, but I looked at the clock. It read
8 o’clock. I had to get home and do my homework before I came back
here to run patrol with Embry and Quil at 9. I wouldn’t be done till at
least 4 and I can’t stay up all night. I have school in the morning. “I’m
sorry. I have to go,”
“Okay,” Emma said sadly. I could see the sadness in her eyes
and it hurt to see it. We walked to the door and Emma shut it behind
her. We stood there and look into each other’s eyes for a while. Slowly,
I moved in. Emma reached up and wrapped her arms around my neck.
My arms wound around her waist and I lifted her up slightly. Her eyes
slowly closed at the same time mine did. My lips found hers.
This kiss was nothing like I’d ever experienced. It was filled with
more passion than I’d ever known. The kiss was sweet and tender. I
pulled her closer to me, but I wanted her closer. Emma pulled away too
soon. I could see the sparkle in her eye and I knew she felt the passion
too. She released my neck, but my arms stayed tight around her waist.
“Good night, Jacob. I’ll see you at school,” Emma smiled. She
tried to pull out of my iron grasp, but failed.
“Werewolf strength, remember?” I chuckled. She just rolled her
eyes at me. My arms unwound from around her waist and she pulled
away. I turned around unwillingly and walked to my car. I looked back
at the house and saw her standing in the doorway. She smiled and I
climbed into my car and drove away.
7. Nothing sucks more than patrol…
I woke up and look at the clock. It said 9:15. I jumped out of bed
and ran out my door.
“Jake, is everything alright?” Billy asked me amused.
“I’m late. I had patrol at 9,” I told him. I rushed out the door. I
didn’t bother to drive so I just broke into a sprint. Running at my full
speed felt so good after being at school all day. I ran through trees and
once I got closer to the forks line I started to shed my clothes. I tied
them around my ankle and I morphed into a wolf. It’s a lot easier to
change now. I don’t just have to be angry, but I can be calm and
centered.
Jake, where have you been? Embry asked.
Sorry! I fell asleep. I told them. I still can’t get over how we can
talk to each other through our minds when were in our wolf form. Yes
it’s helpful, but it’s also annoying. They can read everything you think
about.
I’ll leave Emma’s. You can run closer there. Quil told me. I could
see the images he saw fly by. I raced to Emma’s and checked to see if
anything was out of the ordinary.
What? You don’t trust me? Quil asked hurt. I have been running
here since we started.
I trust you. I’m just double checking. I told him honestly. I do
trust Quil, but sometimes he does miss things.
We were running for an hour when Emma’s bedroom light turned
on. I stopped and looked up. She was standing in front of the window.
She pushed it open and leaned over it. She was staring at the stars for
a while. I could feel that Embry and Quil had slowed down to pay closer
attention to what I saw. Emma looked in the direction I was. I decided
no harm would come to show her I was here.
Jake! Don’t! Embry warned.
Why not? What’s the worst that could happen? I snapped. I took
a cautious step out of the woods and stood in the path. Emma stared
with wide eyes.
I told you. Embry said. You really think that just because she
knows you’re a werewolf she isn’t going to be freaked out. Did you
even tell her that we would be running patrol here?
Oops. It totally slipped my mind. I can’t believe it. She probably
doesn’t even know it’s me.
Probably not. Phase and then come out again. Quil suggested.
Alright, but keep a close eye out. I told them. I took a few steps
back into the woods. I felt the fire decreasing from inside me. I became
myself again and pulled my jeans back on. I walked casually out of the
woods and stood in to middle of the street. Emma was still in the
window, but instead of looking terrified she just looked confused.
“I hope I didn’t scare you,” I told her honestly.
“Wait. Was that you?” She asked astounded.
“Yeah,” I laughed.
“Wait right there,” She told me. She backed away from the
window. I heard her shut her bedroom door. A minute later she was
opening the front door silently.
“Sorry. Did I scare you?” I asked with a chuckle.
“Uh.. What do you think? I giant wolf comes out of the woods
across from my house. No, I wasn’t scared at all,” she snapped. She
sat down on the steps and started starring up at the sky. I walked over
and sat next to her. She never took her eyes off the sky. I watched her
for a little.
“Stop watching me. It’s creepy,” she laughed. When she turned
her head toward me, I noticed there was a tear rolling down her cheek.
“What’s wrong?” I asked. I knew she couldn’t have been crying
from laughing.
“It’s nothing,” She quickly brushed the tear away. I got up and
knelt in front of her. She avoided making eye contact with me. It killed
me to see her like this.
“You can tell me anything. You know that right?” I asked her. She
nodded, but didn’t look at me. I reached under her chin and pulled her
face towards mine. “Whatever it is, if it’s making you upset then it isn’t
nothing.”
“My parents. I can’t help it. I thinking about them every night,
but I don’t know. I guess when you told me about everything it just
triggered something. It brought back all the memories of my dad and
his stories,” she sighed. Her eyes started to water again.
“I’m so sorry,” I scooped her into my arms and just held her for a
while. “I really didn’t mean to upset you by telling you. It wasn’t my
intension at all. I just thought you should know since I am going to be
around a lot.”
“You are?” She lifted her head and stared me straight in to eyes.
Underneath the sadness there, I saw relief. She was glad I’d be around
for her.
“I promise,” I assured her.
“Then I guess you have time to answer some of my questions,”
she laughed. Her eyes started to brighten, but they weren’t even close
to containing the brightness I saw in the picture of her earlier. It broke
my heart to think that maybe that brightness won’t ever return and
that it left when her parents were killed.
“Shoot. I’ve got time,” I smiled. She smiled right along with me. I
braced myself for the endless questions that would come from her and
for the painful ones I knew she wanted to ask.
“You loved Bella. I want to know everything. How long? How
much? Why’d you stop?” She began firing the questions at me.
“Jeez. Enough questions,” I laughed. “And yeah, I did love her.
How much? I loved her enough to hurt whenever Edward was around
and whenever she was hurting. I hated to see her be forced to choose
between Edward and myself, especially since I knew who she would
choose. I guess I loved her my whole life, but not the way you think.
She was like a sister to me, but when Edward left she needed me and
somewhere along my feelings for her just changed. I still love her and I
think I always will. I know you don’t want to hear that, but it’s true.”
“You didn’t answer one of them,” she said. She was just looking
at me. Her face was expressionless.
“Why’d I stop? I told you I didn’t. I mean I guess I stopped in
some way. She got married. She chose Edward over me. I never
thought she would be with a guy like Cullen. It’s disgusting,” I was
getting all worked up just thinking about Edward. My body tensed and
my vision was becoming red. I could feel my body start to shake. I had
to sit Emma away from me. I got up and started pacing back and forth.
“I’m sorry. Did I get you upset?” She stood up and started to
walk over to me. Emma had and alarmed expression on her face.
“Don’t come any closer,” I ordered. She froze. I could feel the
authority in my voice and I knew she could too.
“Is everything okay?” I heard her ask. I slowed my breathing and
took bigger breathes. I stopped shaking and looked toward Emma. She
had a horrified expression on her face. It seemed as if she figured out
what was happening. I decided not to get any closer to her knowing
she must be scared. She rushed toward me and wrapped her arms
around me.
“I am so sorry! I didn't mean to get you upset,” she cried. I stood
there for a second. Emma wasn't horrified with me but rather herself.
“That wasn't your fault,” I told her astounded. I bent down and
wrapped my arms around her waist. I picked her up slightly.
“It was though. If I hadn't asked to talk about Bella you wouldn't
have gotten so angry,” she told me.
“I should have known talking about Cullen would do that,” I
shrugged. I put Emma down and unwrapped my arms. I heard a howl
in the distance and my head snapped up.
“What was that?” Emma asked alarmed. She looked up at me
with pleading eyes. She’s scared and it’s my job to protect her.
“Go in the house now. Make sure all the doors and windows are
locked. I'll explain later. I promise. Just do this one thing for me and I'll
be back as soon as I can,” I told her. I started backing away from her.
“Jake, what’s going on?” she asked.
“Please just do what I said,” I nodded my head toward to door.
She turned around and walked inside. She stood in the doorway for a
second, but I nodded again and she closed the door.
8. I could just kill something
I sprinted toward the woods. Quickly shed my jeans and phased.
I ran toward where Embry had last been.
What’s going on? I asked. I wasn’t sure if I really wanted to know
the answer.
Did you guys find something? Jared suddenly asked. My head
felt very crowded all of a sudden. I could feel Sam and Paul too.
Embry got wind of something. I’m meeting him. He’s closer to
the border of La Push. Quil informed us. I could see trees rushing past
him through his eyes.
Paul head toward Jake. Jake stay near Emma’s. Jared and I will
meet Embry and Quil. Seth, Leah, Brady, and Colin just continue
running. If we need anything else we’ll howl. Sam ordered.
After the order I droned everyone out but Paul. I could hear his
footfalls as he raced toward me. Soon I was face to face with him. He
eyes were wild with excitement. I doubt mine held the same. I was too
busy worrying for Emma.
Want me to check out the back of the house? Paul asked.
Yeah, that’s a good idea. I’ll check out here. Make sure there’s
no unfamiliar smells. I tried to stay calm and not let on how nervous I
really am. Even though Paul could probably tell.
I started checking around the front of the house. I felt Paul
freeze. I rushed to the back of the house in case he found something. I
saw his eyes locked on the house.
Dude, what’s wrong? Did you find something? I felt myself start
to panick.
I think she saw me. I’m not sure though. She was looking out the
window and started backing up slowly. She knows right? I could tell he
was panicking. He didn’t want to blow the secret.
Yeah, she knows. I’m gonna go talk to her. I told Paul. Sam. I’m
going to go talk to Emma. Fill her in. I was with her when Embry
howled. Could you send Seth here to check things out with Paul? I
really hoped Sam wouldn’t say know. He has to understand though. He
be going crazy too if he was in my position.
Yeah, of course. Seth you heard him. Head over there. I could
hear the understanding in his voice.
I nodded to Paul and ran into the woods were I phased back. I
walked back out and Paul was gone. I jogged up to the back door. I
lightly knocked. I could see Emma jump in the living room. She turned
around slowly and her shoulders relaxed when she saw it was me. I
quickly walked over and unlocked the door. She walked back to the
couch and sat down. I let myself in and made sure to lock the door
behind me. She looked terrified, which was understandable.
“You okay?” I asked hesitantly. I tried to read her face.
“What happened?” She avoided my question. She looked up at
me and her face was blank.
“Embry caught wind of something,” I decided it was better to be
honest with her.
“Shouldn’t you be out there then?” I could hear the confusion in
her voice. I sat down next to her.
“Sam told me to stay here while check it out. Paul and Seth are
out there. They’ll let me know if something goes down,” I told her.
“Why would you need to stay here?” She asked. I completely
forget to tell her about everything. Now, I’m not so sure I want to.
What if she freaks out?
“Your parents,” I said.
“Why does everything lead back to my parents?” I could tell her
hurt her every time she talked about them.
“Emma, I don’t want to worry you,” I said.
“You’re worrying me more by not telling me,” She looked at me
with her eyes pleading. I don’t want to keep things from her, but I just
don’t know how she’ll react.
“Okay, but don’t freak out until I tell you everything. Promise?” I
asked
“Promise,” she said honestly.
“Okay well, when your dad was a werewolf, he killed a vampire.
He thought she was one her own, but it turns out she wasn’t. The rest
of the coven came after your dad. The day your mom and dad were
killed you and your brother weren’t there, so you two were safe. The
coven killed you parents but not before they saw pictures of you and
Evan,” I took a deep breath once it was all out.
“So they’re after me and Evan now?” She asked. I could read her
expression. She sounded calm, but I wasn’t completely sure.
“Unfortunately. You don’t need to worry though. We’re here
looking out for you guys. The leeches won’t get past us,” I said without
missing a beat.
“You Promise?” Emma looked at me with pleading eyes.
“I promise. Those parasites won’t get past us,” I said with a giant
smile. I could see her eyes brighten and she smiled at me.
“What the hell is going on down here?” I whipped my head
around and found Evan standing in the doorway with his arms crossed.
“Evan, we need to talk. It’s important,” She stood up. Evan just
kept staring at me. He didn’t look happy, which is understandable.
“Looks like that’s my cue. I’ll see you tomorrow,” I started to
walk toward the door, but Emma grabbed my arm.
“No don’t go,” She begged. Her eyes looked huge and she
seemed scared. Evan just stared at her hand on my arm. “You
promised.”
I sat back down and Evan came to sit across from me. Emma sat
next to him and looked at me expectantly. I knew she wanted me to
tell him everything. I weighed both sides for a second. He needed to
know what was going on. I’d probably get crap for it later, but I’ll take
my chances. I filled him in on everything. About the legends that
actually weren’t legends. His dad’s logic in leaving. The vampires that
killed his parents and how now they were after him and Emma. We all
sat silently for a minute. Evan started to laugh. Emma jumped.
“You’re joking right?” He laughed.
“No I’m not,” I said. I waited for him to answer. He slowly
stopped laughing.
“You are aware that none of those legends are true right. I mean,
come on. People that can turn into wolves. That’s ridiculous. And
seriously? You’re going to bring my parents into that joke. That’s
disgusting,” Evan looked angry now. His body started to shake. I knew
that all too well. Evan was in his early stages. Emma grabbed his arm.
“Emma don’t,” I warned. I could hear the authority in my voice.
She dropped his arm quickly. “Evan, you need to control yourself.
There’s more.” Emma looked at me. Evan slowly regained himself.
“What do you mean there’s more?” he asked.
“I’ve been there. What just happened has happened to me and
the rest of the pack,” I told him. He stared at me blankly and so did
Emma.
“Are you trying to tell me you’re a werewolf?” Evan slowly asked.
“And that I am too?”
“Yeah and no. You aren’t yet,” I told him. Emma got up and
walked out of the room. Probably to regain her composure. She wasn’t
ready for this conversation.
“What does that mean? Yet?” he asked.
“I’m guessing you’re feeling angry all the time. Your body
temperature is higher than normal and whenever you get to angry you
shake and see red. Am I right?” I asked. His face slowly started to look
scared. He looked up at me with pleading eyes. He didn’t want me to
be right. I understood. I had been there.
“This can’t be happening,” he mumbled. He got up and started
pacing back and forth.
“There are others you know. We aren’t the only ones. You can
talk to Sam,” I told him. He stopped pacing and looked at me.
“How many others? Who’s Sam?” He pleaded.
“Including me there are 10. Sam’s alpha. He keeps everyone in
check,” I told him.
“10?” He asked astounded.
“Yeah, we’re a big pack. Don’t worry though. We’re all here for
you,” I assured him. A howl sounded and both our heads snapped in
that direction. Emma ran into the room. Her eyes were wide. Evan
walked over to her and hugged her. I jumped out of my seat and ran
toward the back door. Paul and Seth were standing there impatiently. I
opened the door and turned toward Evan. “Lock the door.” I jumped
through the door and phased on the fly. There go my jeans. I heard the
door lock and took off running with Paul and Seth.
What happened? I demanded.
They caught the scent. No one recognizes it. Embry sniff it again
and see if Jake knows it. Sam said. The smell filled my head. It reeked,
but I’d never smelled it.
I don’t remember that one. I raced toward Embry and Quil.
Jake what happened. I saw Emma look terrified. Seth asked.
Everything went flying through my head at once.
You told her?! Paul all about shouted at me.
Relax. She has a right to know. Sam assured him.
That’s not it though. I played the whole scene through my head.
The rest of the pack tensed.
I should of guessed. Was as all Sam said. Something blurred my
vision as if it ran in front of me. I skidded to a stop and Paul and Seth
did the same. I saw something pale white run to the right of us. We
took off after it.
Follow it. We’ll meet up with you. We’ll attack from all sides.
Sam said.
Everyone took off in different directions. Embry and Quil ran from
the border. Sam and Jared from 100 feet behind them. Colin, Brady,
and Leah came from the cliffs over the beach. Whatever vampire that
was is about to get a rude awakening. I took the front with Paul and
Seth on my flanks about 5 feet behind.
Jake, look out! Seth yelled. I turned to the right and saw a huge
figure racing toward me. I turned and charged at it.
“Stop!” Someone yelled. The figure froze. I did too and Paul and
Seth froze on my flanks. They both faced opposite directions checking
for the vampire that yelled the order. I had a sickening feeling we were
surrounded.
A white figure walked out to me left and another to me right.
Paul and Seth growled. The three figures were too far away for me to
make them out.
“I’m sorry,” the figure to the left said. It started walking closer
and I froze. Edward took another step toward me. I felt Seth relax and I
snarled. “We had no idea it was you.” The figure ahead of me stepped
closer and I notice it was the bigger of the Cullen brothers. I couldn’t
remember his name. Not that I cared anyway.
“Yeah man, sorry. Thought you were someone else,” He
shrugged.
“Emmett,” Edward cautioned. He walked even close and stood
next to Emmett. The third figure shifted uncomfortable. My head was
dead silent. The rest of the pack quickened their pace to get here
sooner. Sam wasn’t too far away. Seth seemed perfectly at ease and it
bugged me. Paul just growled.
Suddenly I felt Sam leap out of the woods. He landed next to me
and tensed his body.
What are you doing out here? Sam spat. Sure, we had a truce,
but that was before. This is now.
“Hunting. We were on our way back when we heard something,”
Edward said. The third figure stepped closer to Edward. Edward
reached out his hand and the figure ran to take it. The rest of the pack
arrived and we all froze. Bella Swan was standing in front of me.
Oh shit. Paul was the only one to speak, but we all agreed.
We apologize for ambushing you, but we need to be careful and
follow through. Sam said. I could see him trying to piece everything
together. I looked at Bella and she smile. She was standing there hard
as stone. Her skin was pale and her eyes a dark red.
“Of course. We understand completely,” Edward nodded. I
couldn’t stop staring at Bella. Edward whipped his head in another
direction and sent his smell toward us. It was rancid. I wrinkled my
nose in disgust. Another figure came running toward us. Carlisle
stepped next to Emmett.
“Is everything okay here?” He asked. He looked at each of us.
Emmett did too as well as Edward.
“I have to agree. You all wouldn’t be out together is something
wasn’t terribly wrong,” Edward stated.
Give me one second. Sam started backing up. He was in the
safety of the trees when I felt him phase. He stepped out into view.
The rest of use shifted uncomfortably. Sam began filling the Cullens in.
I understood. This was their home. They could help in some small way.
I saw Bella shift and then it hit me. The rest of the pack froze. The
smell Embry had picked up before was hers.
