Micro hydro-II (upto 20 MW)
Small Hydro (upto 25 MW)

INTRODUCTION TO HYDROPOWER
Hydro means "water". Hydropower is "water power" and
hydroelectric power is electricity generated using water power.
Egyptians harnessed energy from flowing water 2,000 years ago
Hydropower is the most widely available renewable energy
19% of all electricity used around the world
CONVERSION OF ENERGY
TYPES OF POWER PLANT
a)Storage plants (Impoundment)

b)Pumped storage plants (PSP)
c)Run-of-River Plants (Diversion)

GENERATOR
Converts mechanical energy to electrical energy
TRANSFORMER
A transformer is a device that transfers electrical energy from one circuit
to another through inductively coupled conductors

MAINTENANCE
i) WATER SEAL
ii) TURBINE BEARING
iii) DRAIN SYSTEM
iv) CENTRALIZED GREASE LUBRICATION SYSTEM

PROTECTION SCHEME
I. PROTECTION FROM INTERNAL FAULTS
II. PROTECTION WITH EXTERNAL FAULTS
MERITS
i. Renewable source of energy thereby saves scares fuel
reserves.
ii. Economical source of power in long run.
iii. After the setup has been done the generation cost is low as
compared with other energy sources.
iv. Higher efficiency 95% to 98%.
v. Fuel is not burned so there is minimal pollution.
vi. Water to run the power plant is free.

DEMERITS
i. Susceptible to vagaries of nature such as draught.
ii. Longer construction period and high initial cost.
iii. Loss of large land due to reservoir.
iv. Non-availability of suitable sites for the construction of dam.
v. Displacement of large population from reservoir
CONCLUSION
