OMER ARBEL

Dear Mr. Arbel,

Like you, I am interested in the ambiguous zones that overlap in the traditional defined fields of building and industrial design, craft and materials research. You can define these zones in many ways, but I see one as the home, which is what I have dedicated my design career to enriching. With the invasion of technology, I believe the home has gone astray, as objects destined for this environment have migrated from intimate to inanimate. The home is a place of comfort and intimacy, therefore our designs must reflect this sensibility, while nurturing growth. I first discovered Omer Arbel Office in my Industrial Design studies at the Emily Carr University, when I was taken in by 23.2 which I discovered on an architectural blog. I was surprised and excited to see that OAO was not limited to architecture, but was a design studio whose essence was defined by material exploration and collaboration. I have been following the development of OAO with great interest over the past few years, as the white building near my home with wood framed windows and a glass studio that seems to never sleep, constantly reminds me of your presence. I have been intrigued by a number of your other projects, specifically 22.0, and the 38.0 installation at 54.2. Since graduation from ECU in 2011, I have been on a quest to to live sustainability in Vancouver from the work I create. My journey has taken me to some interesting places, where I have experienced both successes and failures, while having my life enriched by relationships with people. My design practice has been driven by materials, particularly in products that catalyze positive change. This led me to look in our backyard and the clear choice was wood: a local resource that is underutilized, and over exported. Although I intend to maintain a personal practice, it has become clear to me that the optimal way to continue to pursue my passion and further develop my skills, is to work in a collaborative environment under the guidance of an established professional. I believe there is much to learn from you, an individual who has transformed materials into artifacts and shared them with the world. Along with my skills, and passion for the growth of a culture of design in Vancouver, I bring with me a number of assets that I believe would diversify yet complement the creative process at OAO. I would be pleased to meet with you and discuss how I could be woven into your studio culture and contribute to your mission in creating the extraordinary. I can be reached immediately and at any time on my cell at 778-998-9950, but will be following up with a call in the near future. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

pat christie

AVANTI K3 WHEELCHAIR
Design - pat christie dean bennett Art + Design Produced - Emily Carr University of

The Avanti K3 is an aesthetically driven redesign of the manual rigid wheelchair addressing not only the physical, but also the emotional and aspirational needs of its user. It features on-the-move seating adjustability and increased modular collapsibility. A wheelchair functions both as a chair and a mobility device. Current innovations are being driven by mobility and chairs used for sport. We wanted to push our design into the realm of furniture, looking more at the relation the object has with its user and their living environments.

WOOD + CARBON COMPOSITE

With bent wood being a hallmark of modern design, material exploration was used to develop a wood + carbon composite that could meet the structural needs of a wheelchair.

Pre-cut layers of carbon fibre, rubber ply and walnut veneer, together with a 2 part epoxy, were vacuumpressed over a mold. The shape of the mold, taken from a computer model, was translated into parts that were cut on a CNC and assembled. Once cured, the parts were trimmed to size using a pattern and finished with an epoxy coating then installed.

ALUMINUM UNIONS

To connect the planar forms dictated by bent wood lamination, 3 pairs of sand-casted aluminum components were designed to unite the multiple elements that comprise the chair.

Making use of the refurbished sand-casting facilities, we produced pattern pieces from wood that were sanded, filled, sealed, and finished with a high gloss paint. After being placed in the mold, sand was packed around the patterns in layers. Once the patterns were extracted from the sand, arteries were cut into the compressed sand to allow the molten aluminum to flow into the cavity. The parts were trimmed, rough sanded and machined where necessary, then buffed to a shine and installed.

ECU PUBLIC TOUCHPOINT

The Emily Carr University Public Touchpoint is a sculptural installation aimed to collect and distribute information and messaging to the public while enhancing the universitys reception space. Working from the basis of designing a modular framework to support content, the structure was composed was based on the following premises: Engage Interact The composition of scale, form, and graphic elements instills a sense of curiosity that encourages a closer look. BEETLE KILL PINE PROTOTYPES

Design - pat christie Produced - OGA Design Shop

There is an estimated 18.1 million hectares in British Columbia affected by the mountain pine beetle epidemic, making the blue-stained lumber a common sight in lumber yards in Western Canada. These design explorations transform readily available 2x4 dimensional lumber into contemporary furniture pieces that make use of the blue stain unique to BKP. The objective is to develop a standardized system of assembly from which multiple designs can be derived, to serve an intended purpose.

#8 BIG SQUARE BOX

#10 KNOCKDOWN STOOL

An exploration in usability, based on our transient activities and the need for products to be moved over distances.

#13 LAMP MAN

An exploration in function, a solution to the need for a lamp, storage, and, side table in one location.

#15 FULL ROUND

An exploration in form diverging from the 90 relationships standard for dimensional lumber, and closer to the natural form of wood.

STRUCTURE ONE6
Design - pat christie james spouler Produced - Brisco Manufacturing Mountaintop CNC OGA Design Shop

The ONE6 is the longest single span solid wood bench currently in production, and its all made in British Columbia. Designed as part of the STRUCTURE program (IDSWest, BC Wood, Brisco Manufacturing) this product showcases the inherent characteristics and alternative applications of LVL products. The ONE6is born from LVL, a wood product engineered for performance and durability. A specialized manufacturing process results in a material that is strong, straight and consistent, with distinctive aesthetic properties. The reduced-edge profile along the 6 metre length of the bench accentuates the impressive span which can only be achieved by LVL beam construction. CNC carving was the primary production method, which allowed for the design of an innovative joint, strengthened through its load-bearing application. The ONE6 will be permanently installed at Science World following IDSWest 2013.
