Why do things happen, why?
“There is no such thing as fate; you make your own destiny.
God has given you independence to shut out his power or to let him in.
You have more strength to overcome difficulties than you have troubles to overcome. You can remedy
your mistakes because God has given you reason and will”
Paramahansa Yogananda
Grace or disaster, how grounded do you want to be?
Each of us cultivates a karmic state, which is an exact reflection of the distance we have created
between our existence and our Being; between illusion and truth.
Dr. Stylianos Atteshlis "The esoteric Teachings”
Karma
The constant interaction of breath and soul
“One way of translating the word karma is “original action”; we often think that good actions, a job well
done on a material mental or intellectual level, or any other type of action is the true good karma. But
actually karma, the original action, is situated inside the pituitary gland; it is the constant interaction of
breath and Soul”.
Swami Shankarananda Giri “Kriya Yoga Darshan”
Karma, not a matter of rewards or punishment
Karma is an element of the Law of Cause and Effect. This law is not a matter of rewards or
punishments. As scientists have learned in recent centuries, and as mystics have always known, every
event which happens has a cause, and every cause a result. It is the economy of energy and every
energy expresses a vibration and a quality. This law, seen from the point of view of the worlds of
separation, leads us to classify things as good or evil, and consequently, as leading to reward or
punishment. But no judgement is involved.

Jes Bertelsen describes four aspects of karma:
1. The Compensating karma the ego “As you sow, so shall you reap”.
2. The Progressive karma the Self The progressive karma, is the history of the Self, Is the Self
trying to manifest itself via the vehicle of the physical being
3. The Collective karma “the open field”Collective karma is the connection, the evolutionary history
That binds the Selves in open fields.
4. The Transcendence of karma the enlightened. In the fully enlightened state one is above karma
Compensating karma

The Bible: A man reaps what he sows
“Make no mistake about this: God is not to be fooled; a man reaps what he sows. If he sows in the field
of his lower nature, he will reap from it a harvest of corruption, but if he sows in the field of the Spirit,
the Spirit will bring him a harvest of eternal life. So let us never tire of doing good, for if we do not
slacken in our efforts we shall in due time reap our harvest.”
New Testament. Gal.6:7

The compensating karma operates on the egolevel
“The ideology behind the compensating karma is: “As you sow, so shall you reap”.
“If a person in a life has killed another human being, this person will in a coming life be killed himself. If
a person in a life forsake his beloved, then this person himself will have to encounter being forsaken in
another life. […]
The cosmic law says: Any energy discarded from a certain level of vibration will return to that level of
vibration”
It is interesting to note that most karmic memories are in this category.
“A person that in a certain situation is mistreated, finds himself in this situation to a large extend
because this person is helplessly unaware about his own ability to do the same.
When something happens and I can not see my own part, then the energy in the situation freezes me
in the role as a passive, innocent victim. If I, when something happens, can understand and feel that it
could just as easy have been me doing that the other way; that I actually in other connections do it,
then the energy will not solidify, but move towards the Self.”
Jes Bertelsen:”Selvets virkelighed”
Collective karma
“Oftentimes have I heard you speak of one who commits a wrong as though he were not one of you,
but a stranger unto you and an intruder upon your world.
But I say that even as the holy and the righteous cannot rise beyond the highest which is in each of
you. So the wicked and the weak cannot fall lower than the lowest which is in you also.
And as a single leaf turns not yellow but with the silent knowledge of the whole tree, so the wrongdoer
cannot do wrong without the hidden will of you all. Like a procession you walk together towards your
GodSelf.
You are the way and the wayfarers. And when one of you falls down he falls for those behind him, a
caution against the stumbling stone. Ay, and he falls for those ahead of him, who, though faster and
surer of foot, yet removed not the stumbling stone. And this also, though the word lie heavy upon your
hearts: The murdererd is not unaccountable for his own murder, and the robbed is not blameless in
being robbed. The righteous is not innocent of the deeds of the wicked, and the whitehanded is not
clean in the doings of the felon.
Yea, the guilty is oftentimes the victim of the injured. And still more often the condemned is the burden
bearer for the guiltless and unblamed. You cannot separate the just from the unjust and the good from
the wicked; For they stand together before the face of the sun even as the black thread and the white
are wowen together. And when the black thread breaks, the weaver shall look into the whole cloth, and
he shall examen the loom also.”

If any of you would bring to judgment the unfaithful wife, let him also weigh the heart of her husband in
scales, and measure his soul with measurements. And let him who would lash the offender look unto
the spirit of the offended. And if any of you would punish in the name of righteousness and lay the axe
unto the evil tree, let him see to its roots; And verily he will find the roots of the good and the bad, the
fruitful and the fruitless, all entwined together in the silent heart of the earth.
And you judges who would be just. What judgment pronounce you upon him who though honest in the
flesh yet is a thief in spirit? What penalty lay you upon him who slays in the flesh yet is himself slain in
the spirit? And how prosecute you him who in action is a deceiver and an oppressor, Yet who also is
aggrieved and outraged? And how shall you punish those whose remorse is already greater than their
misdeeds?
Is not remorse the justice which is administered by that very law which you would fain serve?
Yet you cannot lay remorse upon the innocent nor lift it from the heart of the guilty.
Unbidden shall it call it call in the night, that men may wake and gaze upon themselves. And you who
would understand justice, how shall you unless you look upon all deeds in the fullness of light? Only
then shall you know that the erect and the fallen are but one man standing in twilight between the night
of his pigmyself and the day of his godself, And that the cornerstone of the temple is not higher than
the lowest stone in its foundation.
Kahlil Gibran: “The Prophet” p 49 – 52
Progressive karma
The progressive karma is the history of the Self. If there is something in the personality that does not
die – and experiences point to that, then this Immortal aspect is part of the continual consciousness of
the Self.
A person whose consciousness entirely is attached to the body and focused in the I, therefore will not
have any chance for experiencing an expanded continual consciousness. The Self is a phenomenon of
gradual transference of consciousness from body and I to a higher, eternal centre.
The progressive karma, is the history of the Self, is the Self trying to manifest itself via the vehicle of
the physical being, forcing events lifetime after lifetime, needed to teach the individual what is
necessary for the Self to manifest. The challenges is governed by laws so they match the person, the
challenges are never “too much” for someone genuinely on the path.
The process of the self is reflected in abilities, talents, ethics, the way emotions and sexuality are dealt
with, attitudes towards others etc. the ability to live “right living” (dharma).
Edited from Jes Bertelsen: “Selvets Virkelighed” p 117 ff

The open field and the collective karma
The process of the Self is a continuation of consciousness and situations. The Self is a flow, exhibiting
a relatively stable identity. This stable flow stretches over what seems to be more than one life, each life
with its own oneoffI, and oneoffbody. The deep identity of the Self gives the answers on the
individual lives meaning and purpose. From the perspective of the Self, the Iidentity looks complete
illusory. The I is only a minimal part of the totality of the Self.
In the open field the Self in its flow, will flow and merge with other Selves in their flow, and together
create a flood, a field that no longer can be said to have identity as seen from the viewpoint of the I […]
Collective karma is the connection, the evolutionary history that binds the Selves in open fields.
Edited from Jes Bertelsen: “Selvets Virkelighed” p 117 ff
The transcendence of karma The enlightened
This state is of course hypothetical for us, but still it is interesting to note that in the fully enlightened
state one is above karma, understood as something one has to undergo, simply because karma
implies attachment. There are, however, many examples on enlightened beings that take on
themselves other peoples karma.
The crucifixion and shock
It is said in the Hindu and Buddhist esoteric tradition, that a murder of a fully enlightened person will
spark a negative collective karmic process that will last approximately 2000 years.
Jes Bertelsen “Hjertebøn og Ikonmystik”
“It is true that there are also some positive aspects in the crucifixion, especially something the times
after the crucifixion have seen in it, that Christ in that way redeemed our sins.”
”But look, the hand of the one betraying Me is at the table with Me! For the Son of Man will go away as
it has been determined, but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed!"
(Luke 22).
In other words – it may be “right” that something happens, but that does not free the perpetrator for the
karma attached.
“This is an attempt to bring meaning in the crucifixion. But still it has been a shock, as we also can see
it among the mystics and in much art. With the crucifixion the western religious movement is started
with a very big spiritual trauma that in a way creates an esoteric chain shock reaction.
We know that a person that has been shocked by a near death experience, incest or a violent accident,
has a tendency to release a series of known mechanisms: firstly repression, because the event is
unbearable to realise, and a feeling of guilt as a result of the repression; but also a tendency to repeat
5
the circumstances surrounding the shock because one is not capable of integrating it. It is as if the
western church, in its focus on the crucifixion, has its origin in such a spiritual shock; and the Christian
mysticism and the development of Christianity through the centuries reproduce this again and again.

The Birth Trauma and karma
BPM I: Unity with the mother
BPM II: Opposition to the mother
BPM III: Cooperation with the mother
BPM IV: Separation from the mother
The experience of being a victim of deeply unacceptable events is very much a focus when reliving the
Basal Perinatal Matrices.
Grof says: “It seems as if there exists a condition of high biological and emotional excitement where all
the extreme emotional qualities connect and reaches metaphysical dimensions.
“When two or more individuals reach this universal “melting pot” of passions and drives, [for example
during childbirth] they will be conditioned by the situation that caused them regardless of the role they
played.” Grof further says – similar to what the classical eastern karmateaching – whenever two
individuals is involved in a situation where their emotions reach an intensity like the “melting pot” they
will by necessity in a consecutive life repeat the same pattern in varying roles, until they reach the level
of awareness necessary in order to transform the karmic tie.
