Population Geography: Introduction: The population of India stands at 1.

21 billion as per 2011 census data and stands behind China whose population is 1.31 billion. USA is the third most populated country with a figure of 308.7 million people. The population of India grew by 1.74% per annum during the decade 2001-2011 as compared to Chinas 0.56 % growth rate. The population of India is 17.5% of the worlds one. 1. Indian States and UTs: UP is the most populated one with the figure of 19 crore and Sikkim is the least populated state with the figure of 6 crore. Maharashtra, Bihar, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh stands at the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th places. Delhi is the most populated UT with a population of 1.67 crore and Lakshadweep is the least populated with a figure of 64k. The puducherry and Chandigarh stand at 2nd and 3rd positions. 2. Population density: India: 382 persons per sq. kilometer as compared to 325 persons per sq. kilometer in 2001. Gender Composition: No. of males: 62 crore No. of females: 58 crore India Sex ratio: 940/1000 in comparison to 933/1000 in 2001 : 972/1000 in 1901 and the worst is 927/1000 in 1991 Kerala (highest): 1084/1000 Haryana (lowest): 877 Puducherry (UT): 1038 Daman & Diu (UT): 618 4. Literacy: India literacy Rate: 74.04% as compared to 65% in 2001 Males: 82.14% Females: 65.46% Kerala: 93.91% Mizoram: 91.58% Bihar: 63.82% (last) Rajasthan: 67.06% (2nd last) Four states have achieved literacy rates above 85% are Kerala, Mizoram, Tripura and Goa.

Six UTs have achieved literacy rates above 85% namely Lakshadweep, Daman & Diu, Puducherry, Chandigarh, Delhi and Andaman & Nicobar islands.
