Dear Co-workers,

January,

1990

I really miss "Word Perfect." I am using an inferior word processing computer software since the main computer is at the repair shop. I already lost half a page on this one when the keyboard froze on me.

I just had to turn it off and start all over again. This one lacks spelling check too! About noon on Christmas eve, our computer started to lose information from a massive "archive storage file." That file had been built up over a year or more and is vital to part of our
work. I
not

assumed

that a computer virus had struck so I took it to the

but that we will have to erase the hard drive and

start all over to re-enter what we must have. That is just as disastrous as there is the keyboarding for a Swazi, a Zulu, two Xhosa, and an Afrikaans booklet on that file plus the complex layout of the minister's directory! All that is on the the Word Perfect program alone! The Publishing program has probably twenty booklets in assorted languages. We praise God that he has been able to backup most things, but he has run into a problem with the main
storage archive, so I have ordered an addition that will make i t

After the burglary last month, we also found other items stolen. One was the computer-mouse, a device used with the desk top publishing soft ware. I have also ordered a keyboard with a built in ball to do that

task. We are waiting their installation and we hope, the salvage of the
Christian book source archives so that I can know where to order

books for our customers at the shop.

While Shannon was here to put them together for me during the Christmas
break, covers we managed to print seven booklets and to do the colour for the of another five. Already another ten are in line waiting

Three

of those are among the lesson books used

in the prisons correspondence Bible lessons.

During the past week, a number of the missionaries working in South Africa gathered in this area for several days together. Nearly everyone had some assignment; mine was the closing sermon on Saturday evening. They also had a specialist speaker or two. One spoke on the handling of the problem of "Liberation Theology", and another on how
to manage your finances. Some of our black brothers were also invited

to express their needs and hopes from the missionaries.

We do thank you all for your many prayers, for your financial support, and for the beautiful cards which are still arriving. May His blessings
be with you all. Yours in His Service,

Dear Friends,

February, 1990

Shortly before Christinas our computer rebelled at the load of work I had on the disk and scrambled i t polluting various items. I had

to call in professionals, and they simply erased the hard disk

losing my records directing me where to order from a list of over
8000 Christian books available in this country. Not a trace remains, so we are back to searching through catalogs when someone

asks for a particular item. Not very effective, that. They also erased our updated American mailing-list, forcing us to revert to an old back-up list, as well as our South African mailing-list of the last 1200 Bible Correspondence students. I am picking those back up rapidly as the lessons are returned to me for marking. (About 500 so far.) Praise to the Lord that it is the unusual "tragedy" that does not have a brighter side as well. Starting over on the hard disk has given the opportunity to clean house on it and
to organize it better. The service man also gave us the latest DOS

and set the disk up far better than it had been. Now if we can just re-learn what we thought we had finally mastered. I must also find time to put our salvaged manuscripts through "Publish It" which
will place them into proper lay-out for printing. If we have made a mistake on your address in any way, or you know of someone we have left out, please forgive us and let us know.

Changes may have been made on our older back-up since it was set aside, and to top it off we could not make our first draft work on envelopes so I had to type it again in one great rush under a
different format. This one works, who are no longer on it. but I do remember a few people

We remain almost overwhelmed with work. I have been working on the

typing up of manuscripts for printing now that the computer has been put to rights again, but there are still seven, by count, stacked here on my desk while two have just been finished and there are at least ten waiting at the printing stage. One of the biggest
problems has been that there are three Venda language translators here in Alberton and they keep coming in, interrupting my work, to ask if their work is ready for them yet. I can do only one at a

time while they are all three turning in material to be typedI At

least seven translators are at work altogether.

Rhonda Bright and Susan Cloete are both sick in bed at our home

with infectious hepatitus. Chris is sick at home with what is thought to be flu. Hopefully, we do not also become ill. I had hepatitus some years ago and certainly do not want a return bout
with i t !

We praise God for your faithfulness at the throne of prayer. Please keep us before Him that we may not be brought down as Rhonda has been. I am hard pressed to catch up again without that.
Yours in Jesus Christ,

Dear co-workers in Christ Jesus,

March/April, 1990

The first of April is the date on which South Africa always raises the postage charges and this year is no exception. With
news letter only on alternate months and see how it works

this rise, Ihave reluctantly decided that Iwill try producing a

Our special thanks to Verna Weber and our daughter Kathy for their standing in at the Bible Shop so that we could take a
few days vacation, and to the f^/lessimer family for the loan of

their camping trailer. We left this past Wednesday morning after a delayed start. I had connected the trailer to the car to move it to the driveway where we planned to switch the van only to find that the car would not start again. It had to be towed to the garage and left to their tender mercies. They delivered it in the evening and picked up my pre-signed check from Kathy. We finally got away at about ten o:clock

with the van and the trailer. Our destination was a Provential (State) Park, Badplaas (Bath place). We

had planned to camp until Saturday, then to go on to Barberton and worship with the black church there. Instead, we stayed till Sunday and drove over that morning for services leaving the trailer to be picked up on the return trip. We both really enjoyed the break, the hot mineral springs, and our long walks about the beautiful grounds. We very reluctantly returned home Sunday afternoon. The Barberton church treated us royally, giving Phyllis gifts and myself a special collection for "tea" on the road home.

We had been a bit nervous about travelling with politically motivated unrest being common everywhere
just now, but actually there have been more problems in Alberton's own location than where we were. People were very gracious to us everywhere. It was rumored at Barberton that our Minister at White

River s car had been burned and only a few days ago, we were told of a problem at the Minister's Training School where Ihad been a few weeks ago and where Shannon had planned to go to teach a
computer course this school holiday. The trip had to be cancelled as there had been threats to burn the

buildings, The students were being sent home for their own safety. Michael phoned Verna while we were getting the car to the garage to say that perhaps Shannon could now come as things are now calmed down and that four of the students did not want to go home. He would contact us later.

The teenagers prepared a play which they presented to the church on a Sunday Evening recently, and

Centre later in the month. Itook videos of the entire play since we had five grandchildren taking part In

again at the Old Folks Home this past Sunday afternoon. They will be presenting it for Aletheia Christian

We have a busy time ahead as I have been asked to teach a class as well as to preach the Easter sermon for our area black churches Easter Convention at an East Rand Gold Mine. The following week,
brother Weber and I are to teach a leadership class for an Indian Christian Church here in Alberton. That too, will be a multiple congregation gathering.

We pray God daily for you all and that He will use us to His glory.

EMERGENCY PRAYER LETTER

Dear frLcnds and Co-Vorfiers,

jitly, 1990

I had not meant to send, another letter untU next month, but things are Just happening too fast, and I iwint you to fcnou' so that you may be able to pray having been Informed. 1) The funeral of brother Molafu u'as not the end of funerals. In I'ery rapid succession brother Gcldenhuys and brother Zobolo both died. Neither was ready cxpccted, though they had not been ivell. Phyllis and I both u^nt to the funeral of brother Zobolo, and I to that of brother Qeldenhuys. The family had phoned to ask me to bring the message for the Zobolo seri'lces. I expect It tvas the largest single group I had euer addressed as there was a masslue attendance. Members of the
community brought traditional blnnJirts and sleeping mats ttrfilch u!rc fiaced obout the casket In the graue, pagan Zulu style. The Zulus do not ativays use caskets, often only Hankcts and mats. The graue UJas In the potato potch uery near the home, also trodltlonal. Brother fieidenhuys's funeral iwis a mixture of ii+ilte and aifrlcan customs as he us Coloured and not Black, though his congregation was largely Black. I only brought a tribute at that service, u)hich ivaseuen more rruisslue than the other, but u>as asked to be one of the paul- bearers. What shocks me and Is a real need for prayer, Is that these three men ministered to a uery large segment of the membership of the churches. Nearly half of the 12,000+- total triembershlp of the churches are nou without ministers!

2) ais there are nou great gaps In the ministry and no prospects of mature trained leadership Immediately aualloble, I hoye offered to send free of charge a packet of sei^eral booklets to all the elders that 1 can get the addresses of. This could be a really expensli^e proposition as there are probably 750 to a 1000 elders scattered about the country. I may haue to do special reprints and there uoll be no Income to couer moterlals, packing or postage for this mailing..
3) We are nearly out of Zulu lessons books for the prisoners, so I haue to reprint all three of those as soon as possible. Since the press has been gluing a lot of trouble, 1 phoned and asked to haue a full set of rebuilt rollers Installed. They should be here any day so that I can start printing In earnest; hopefully, without battling with press problems this time. 4) Probably the most urgent of our prayer needs Is for the ministers who are on the "front lines" of the lutbuient townships. -A few of them haue started turning away from the saulng gospel to 'liberation theology" seeking help In political and physical power mouements. but far more are seeking religious power In their own "clergy mouemcnt", and, ignoring their BiKe origins and ^e headship of Christ, haue uoted burdens upon the church membership and missionaries alike. In protest cigalnst this unscrlptural and euen unconstitutional trend, I haue submitted my personal resignation from the formal mission organization. This means that I haue probably attended my last mission conference and minister's week retreatos I haue dared to chollengc the authority of these decisions.

5) The final prayer request Is that you pray with us ouer the need for a church In sllberton, one of the major "growing municipalities'' bordering Johannesburg. Buildings haue come auaUable about u4>lch I haue been praying for some time, als
they remain on the market, I mention them to you. The church proper Is fully In use with bapt. cry room, prayer room, office and seating for 200. The adjoining hall (new) is larger and would make an Ideal print shop/Bible shop with basement warehousing, dark room, and walk-In uault. A kitchen and dining room arc at stage leuel and upstairs are 13 small class rooms and a large room. We praise Rod for His proulslon and trust In Him that It may be for the needs of the (ITC, a church In ^Iberton and a Bible training sdiool for a new, soon to be, racially Integrated South 'Africa. The asking price Is $175,000. 6) The news this week tells us that new areas are being set aside for 1.6 million squatters In our area In order to cope with the masslue Influx of jobless people to the Wltwatersrand complex. We are a part of It. Pray for preachers! Here! Now! Pray for jobs for the people! yours In jesus Christ,
y

The presenttally In this area Is certolnly apfwoachLng 550 dead, and Tokoza, next to JCatlehong, seems to the iwrst hit spot. Please do not tt-omj aboutus fust now, but do remember us In prayer that the sUiwtion un.U not deteriorate.

By the time you receiL'e this letter, Phyllis should be in UpLngton u'here the annual church conference is being held this year. They have run into an accommodation problem as it happens to be at the height of the itn.ld flou>er season in that area and the hotels are booked full of tourists. People travel from oil over the iraKd to sec the floucrs at this time! Phyllis plans to stoy with the Stanley's In the cottoge they u^reable to teserL>e, and I picked up her plane tickets yesterday. She u>lll fly there u-hUe I keep things going here. She is treasurer of the uHDnicn's funds and hos gone to turn ouer to someone else since she hos requested not to be considered for re election tills year. We ate both u>altlng to see nhat direction the mission takes foUoiving this confcrence and the Maich Minister's Retreat, u+iich, I understand Is planned to be at Xatiehong, the local
black church here.

I am uery upset that our ptinting equipment still has not been lepaited, but as it is not the sort of thing that anyone but a professional can do. I can only u^lt and pfione regtilady. I am ivonderlng if pethaps I should not ini'cst^ate havin<f it jobbed out until we can do it ourseli'es ogaln. We at least need the Zulu lesson books for tlie prison ministry!

The ordination serfices at tstcourt were uery u>clt attended ond I most enjoyed my week eni. there. The people made good use of the van to buy Bibles, hynmbooks and other things, though In the end, 1 had to park in the middle of the dirt lane s there simply u'as no access to reasonobly leuel ground anyii-here near the church. It 0*0$ I'ery awkuwrd u^rklng on a crazUy sloping floor even then. I nearly ran out of gasoline on the countiy roads of a short cut I uxs encouraged to use, but ju.st managed to make it ula the back gate to a toll toad gasoline station. Thanks to the trouble in Noilit alfilca, our gasoline price is going up by 1Oc a litre. Travel is almostprohibitii'e. We do haue to make a trip again I'ery shoitly as both Phyllis and I are scheduled to be on the programme of the Coloured family u^ek end camp at Die filoria Campgrounds the fiist u>eek end In October. We are really looking foru^rd to the trip.
U u^s olso my prli'llcge to preach at Kimberley Road twice this month, though the first time on very short notice. Dennis us ill that week end and away the next. We gratefully thank you for your continued prayers.
Ijours in His seruicc,

His blesslugs be with you all.

Octx)bf.r, 1990 Dear Co Workers,

Mai^ ftod be pfalsed that aftr an otq\^ of desttuction in tFte toicnshlps and on the trains In particular, things seem to be In control for the time being, and an uncasi^ peace has leturned to t(ie K.eef. U'hlle the minister u^s au>ay, one famlli^ of the Xatiehong church iws attacked, but oslde from all their windows being smashed, no one was Injured, for which we thank, the Lord. The mllltart^ had to be brought Into t(\e townships u>fiere thei^ Installed bat^d wire entanglements between the two tribal areas, a local curfew was declared and the^ patrol between tliem. Unfortunateli^. the Xhosas and the Zulus are traditional enemies, both are per^ latge tribes and both adamant that the^ will not be ruled btj a leader from the other! alctually aboard the trains and taxis the situation is still fery tense as are the gangster sti^e shootings from fast moulng uehidcs which speed away before help can be stimmoned.
The conference Is ofer, and all went well up until the close of the Saturday ei^enlng ser^tces. vlpparently two of the young ministers waited till ^i^e final evening after the executlt>e had adjourned tlielr meetings and asked to make an announcement. They wanted to announce a proposed meeting for the purpose of explaining the principles of Cart Marx and Lenin's teachings and to assure that these were good and no tlueat to the church. They also pointed out that unless the Church of Christ joined the World Council of Churches, It would be Illegal when communism takes ouer. The missionaries issued a joint statement at the Sunday seri'lces, and I am glad to hear, were heartily endorsed by the experienced ministers. Most seem to be relieved that this carrte out Into the open, rather than being whispered In dark corners.

The mission secretary was asked to draft a letter to me rejecting my resignation and asking me to come to the March meeting of the ministers. I had planned to continue working witfi the local ministers and congregations in any cose, and I am sure they now see why I was concerned, 1 presently plan to attend. Phyllis was L>ery unhappy that Lucille Stanley was 111 and did not go to conference. This left her as the only missionary wife attending sessions, and me not there, so she had to beg rUes euerywheie. The women also rejected her letter and kept her on as their treasurer.
Being convinced that tite repairman Is unlikely to cotne repalt and repair my printing press, I finally rolled up my own

shlrtsleei>es and using strips of paper, adjusted tfie pressure on ei^ery Ink roller myself. (I floured I coidd not get It worse than Inoperative, and It ims already that tlie way It was!) While It still does not hai'e rebuilt rollers, it does seem to be just what It needed, as it Is icorking reasonably well again and 1 hai'e printed fli;e books this month. That was enoir^ to throw my back out though, so 1 have really been crippling about the last two it>eeks In absolute agony. Thanks to granddaughters Hhonda and Susan, those fii'e books ate now all assembled and stored aii>ay. New stocks of paper have just arrived so I can start printing the next 15 books that are now ready or are In very low supf^y as u>eU as nine tracts. With my back In the state It Is, there Is no imy that \ can do all of these; possibly some of them. 1 started using the computerized stock control this month and it qulfkty told me just howtow \ was in many items of stock.

The Deo Gloria family camp is coming up veiy shottly. and I am woiklng on material for my doss. Phyllis has had to cancel her plan to attend as our daughter Becky and her husband are taking a week's leave and wanted to leave their three
children with us plus the four we have alieady in the house. U Is llkeiy to be an exciting two week school holiday! We altfays welcome school's re-opening, linfoitunately we could not find transport to take the (ot to camp with us.

We have just received conflrmation that Mi Carpenter, a tetued ptlntet, will be coming to assist us from the 14th of November until my blithday. the 8t(t of february. We praise tlie Lordand are counting on his presence to help us get caught up again on the needed printing. We woidd really be happy If some of the needed Sotho translation which have been commissioned would arrive in time to be printed. Sotho and Tsifana are our most needed languages at the time being. Thank you for your prayers.

Dear Co Woikers,

We give thanks to God that in so far as our own work is concerned, things have returned to normal. Our greatest problem at the present time is that the gasoline price has sky-rocketed. and is not expected to go down again. This means an
escalation of all prices as everything has to bft lifinsi>ortd

My special thanks to brother Bill Weber for his invrtation to teach a class in the seminar which he arranged the black ministers and eldors of the locl r^hurchps I hp tirst sessinns were held at l>>fonvill9 (Soweto) arvj week at Katlehong near Alberton. I taught an hour class each week, but as he wished to complete his study and had fallen badly behind, I was excused from the third week which was at his own home. I think I had weeks for my own class This is because f had the ial class of Irtw day to permit mo to be at tli book shop till

Our daughter Kathy has been looking for an apartment she could afford for her family. and thanks to a nurse MefK). she was given a tip that resulted in finding a two bedroom apartment where the friend also Irves, only a block away from the hospital, via a nice walk through the park. There are only four apartments over a shop. As Kathy had to appear in court today as a witness following their car accident last year. Phyllis used our grocery money and a big chunk of the bank balance to pay the month's rent demanded for a deposit and tfie first month's rent. We may go hungry, but I am sure that everyone will be happy to have some sort of normality again tn our homes. She still has to sign the lease, but they can move

Tommy and I really enjoyed our week end at Deo Gloria camp. Shannon was upset that he could not also go with us, but he works after school as a cashier at a super market. I taught an hour men's class, and I think Tommy concentrated on giving his teachers problems and did a lot of cliff climbing and exploring. He stayed with several other young fellows, and I slept in the Bible van as it has a "bunk-over Ihe cab " arrangement for one person only. We did a good business as the camp has added a beautiful covered patio both sides of the main building and I was able to arrange to park the van parallel and next to this just outside Ihn dining nrea. I am pleased to see lhat following the conference, the mission secretary and president have both circulated letters taking a stand on several of the matters thai had upset me a great deal. I note more emphasis on both following the constitution of
the mission and using the Scriptures in dealing with problems. They have made it very clear that the mission is not an affiliate of the South African Council of Churches (heavily communistic and very political). They have approved not using building and evangelism funds for any other purpose than that designated, and brother Ndamase has made rt clear in his last letter that it is the church's work to preach the gospel and plant churches. These are all very good, though they certainly will not endear us to some in these days when many churches are more political than Christian! I understand that broUiar

Scrati of Klerksdorp phoned in a temper when he read the last correspondence gathering to consider the teachings of Marv, and who is employed by the S A C.C
