BASIC ENGLISH TOOLKIT

HOW TO USE THIS BOOK
This book has been compiled for newly arrived non-English speaking pupils, by teachers of English as an additional language, working in Suffolk schools. It has been designed to help pupils with no knowledge of English to acquire basic communication skills during the first term of school. It is for pupils who have at least a basic literacy in their first language. Social language will be picked up through interaction with other pupils. This book is intended as a guide and for reinforcement of language learning. It should be used in the classroom and for homework/ independent study. A digital camera would be useful for creating the section on All About School The book contains resources for pupils that comprise: English vocabulary and corresponding illustrations. The vocabulary pages need to be translated into the pupils first language Please see the Communication page for some free web site addresses. With a little demonstration or support, the pupil should be able to use the translation tools her/himself Worksheets of practice activities Instructions to the teacher on how the resources may be used

Ask the county schools library service whether they have a phrase book or dictionary Ask resource library at professional development centre whether they have a phrase book or dictionary Use the internet to find suppliers of resources or translation web sites, www.Slamnet.org.uk is the Suffolk LEA web site and you can find resource information under the section for the Minority Ethnic and Traveller Achievement Team, followed by English as an Additional Language. Teach vocabulary from other topics to learn phrases, for example, food, using a well illustrated cookery book. Food is a good topic to extend, especially if the pupil is studying Food technology. A research project on food and recipes from the pupils country could result in a booklet or display. Some pupils need to learn categories of food such as meat, fruit, vegetables and games can be devised to group words under these headings.

21

Word searches can be made for free using - ww.teach-nology.com Other topics are school subjects, seasons, music, TV programmes. Extension work includes because I dont like winter because its cold.

22

NOTES FOR TEACHERS You will need to provide a current calendar to help pupils with these exercises. Before using these worksheets with your students, you will need to teach them numbers from 1-31 (cardinal and ordinal), the days of the week and the months of the year. This can be done orally, though it is a good idea to write them down too. Chant the numbers, try saying them backwards, even numbers, odd numbers, simple sums. Play bingo Chant the days and months rhythmically to help the students learn them. Play games such as asking which day/month comes before/after another. Try saying the days/months backwards. Play pairs in small groups using the upper and lower case pairs of cards. Look at the calendar and ask questions such as, How many Mondays are there in September? or What day is 29th April? You will also need to teach the meaning of the other key words: season, spring, summer, autumn, winter second, minute, hour, day, week, fortnight, month, year time, watch, clock. date, calendar, birthday, holiday The worksheets can be used in any order (apart from the first page with the key words), though they are roughly numbered in order of difficulty. Although the wordsearches are easy, they should not be used until the students are familiar with the meanings of the words.
