Paracetamol is an analgesic and antipyretic drug. Indications: Relief of fever, minor aches and pains Drug Classification: Analgesic and Antipyretic Mechanism of Action: Produce analgesia by blocking pain impulses by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis in the CNS or of other substances that sensitize pain receptors to stimulation. The drug may relief fever through central action in the hypothalamic heat regulating center. Dosage: Tab adult and children > 12y/o 1-2 tablets every 4-6 hours as needed. Max: 8 tabs in 24 hours. 250mg/5ml susp. Children>12y/o 2tsp. 7-12 y/o 1-1 ½ tsp. 3-6 y/o ½ -1 tsp. 1-2 y/o ½ tsp. 120mg/5ml susp. Children >12y/o 3-4 tsp, 7-12y/o 2-3 tsp, 3-6 y/o 1-2 tsp, 1-2y/o 1tsp. Drops children 1-2y/o 1-1.2ml, 7-11months 1ml, 4-6 months 0.6-1ml, 0-3 months 0.3-0.6ml. Special Precaution: Pain of >5days for children and 10 days for adults. Fever of >3 days. Pregnancy Risk: B Adverse Reaction: Allergic skin reactions and GI disturbances Contraindications: Anemia, cardiac and pulmonary disease. Hepatic or severe renal disease. Form: Tablets, Suspension, Drops Nursing Responsibilities: Use liquid form for children and patients with difficulty in swallowing. In children, don’t exceed 5 doses in 24 hours. Tell patient to consult doctor before giving the drug to children below 2 y/o. Advise patient that drug is only for short term use.
