Moods, what causes them?

by Clydene Oberbey My moods are as bad as Arkansas weather, up, down, all around. Why do we get in and out of these moods? Why cant we just stay on an even keel of sorts. Im me, you are you. We are all so different, but yet the same. My grandma used to tell me I was moody and she was right. There are so many different moods to be in. I have come to the realization that we make our own moods. I went grocery shopping this morning, not my favorite chore I must say. The store was crowded and noisy. They had moved things drastically since the last time I was in there and of course, I got frustrated because I couldnt find anything. Nothing was where it should be. Why do they do that anyway? I always was told; If it aint broke, dont fix it. Now, who was the smart person that decided to put the dad-blasted sour cream up by the butter. It has always been back with the yogurts, cottage cheese, etc., I liked it there. I was used to it being there, why in the heck move it? I got to thinking about the little store where my Mama shopped when I was a kid. Nothing moved there. Everything stayed put. It was a cracker-box shaped building made of sheet iron with one aisle up the middle, meat box in the back, by the side of a pop machine. My wise teacher told me everyone quotes scriptures, and as always, what my teacher taught was and is true. They dont read those scriptures they only quote the part that pleases them and can use them to suit whatever need they may have. We are well warned of this. We are to test and try every word we are fed. (1 John 4). As my pastor and teacher taught, men can and do make mistakes. But the word will stand true, trust God first and man last and stand in the word only. They called me stubborn (hard headed). Im nothing compared to Jesus. For the joy of the cross He faced death and He overcame it. Now thats hard headness, wouldnt you agree? To the elderly, to the disabled and the injured or just hurt, or outcast, read and study and love. Our God hears and sees us also and He is coming. Your sister in the faith and hope in the truth of the word, to God for praise in Jesus forever. Pat Singleton

it. Pops were slid in these slots with only the bottle top showing. On the cap was the flavor. Pop Kola, RC Cola, Coke in six ounce bottles, root beer, cream soda, Nesbitt orange, grape, strawberry, and on and on. You put in your nickel, something triggered and you could slide the bottle of your choice over until you could pull it out, then open it with a bottle opener hanging on a cord. On the left side was a candy display case. The candy was all in boxes in the glass front case. No wrappings, just lying open in the boxes. That was penny candy and you could get a candy sack full for a penny. Across from it was the candy bars. Baby Ruth, Butterfinger, Zag Nut, Zero, Power House, and they were big. They cost a nickel. On the other side of that aisle was shampoos, lotions, hair oils in three kinds, Prell Shampoo, Jergens Lotion, and Wildroot Cream Oil hair oil. Hall Parks stood behind the counter with a pencil and paper. As you laid your items on the counter he wrote it down and listed the price. When you finished he then licked the lead in the pencil and went down the figures counting in his head as he went, then he would write the total at the bottom. It was all faster than any store now. No waiting for price checks or the blamed machine throwing your credit card back at you. Well, heck fire, it is as plain as the nose on your face why our moods are changing for the worse as we get older. Things are too fast now, hurry, hurry, hurry. Thats it, I have decided. We didnt have as much to choose from then, the store was small, no walking for a long time just to find an item that they have moved. No waiting on price checks. No waiting on a stupid machine that wont work. It was not a major endeavor just to buy groceries. Simple, simple, simple. Thats what the difference is now, nothing is simple any more. No wonder my moods are jumping here and there all the time. My brain is still in 1950 and it is 2013. Yep, I got it figured out. Times they are a changing too darn fast. Im in slow gear trying to function in the fast lane and Im too old to change now. Heck, I dont wanna strip what gears Ive got left! Nope! Romans 12:2 -And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.

By Betty Lepley How nice that fall has arrived. Sunday afternoon we got home from our trip to Oklahoma City, we being Kathy and I. We left here Friday morning heading for Oklahoma City to attend my great-grandson Owens fourth birthday party. This year the theme was, The Cat and the Hat. Kasey had really outdone herself in decorating. There was even a surprise guest, The Cat in the Hat himself. Owens Grandma Laura was in full costume, red and white hat and all. He thought that was awesome. At times I think my daughter will be forever young. It was a fun and busy day. Laura and Frank took him to the state fair that morning and he was still going strong by party time. His ultimate gift was a really big outdoor swing set. He asked his dad, How did you get it in the backyard? He had no idea it took two or three people to put it together before daylight on his birthday. Those from out-of-town were Grandma and Poppy George and aunt, uncle and cousin, Tiffany, David and Devyn Boone, all from McKinney, Texas, and GreatAunt Kathy Cunningham and Great-grandmother Mammie (me). Aside from his little friends and their parents there were his grandparents and uncle, Bill and Sharon Woody, Judy Woody and Brad Woody all from Oklahoma City. I did not know it until I read it in The Spectator that my cousin, Ralph Turner, of Grass Valley, Calif., had passed away. Up until the past few years he would come to our area to visit relatives here and in Hot Springs. He was the son of my dads oldest brother, Cloe, and Daisy Crabtree Turner. He drove a Ford Ranchero and in his travels would buy old iron bedsteads, redo them and resell them where he lived as there was a demand for them. Elaine and I did meet for lunch at the Coffee Break on Thursday. There we saw Ed Milton and Bob Rhodes.

Also, Thursday was my 78th birthday. I received several phone calls and quite a few cards and appreciate each and every one of both. I saw in the Fort Smith paper that Virginia McPhail celebrated her 100th birthday in Van Buren. She is one of the first Milton relatives I met after moving to Ozark. She was always in charge with the Milton reunions when they were here in Ozark. My greatgrandmother was Martha Milton Hamm, on my moms side. Birthday greetings to her. My granddaughter and husband, Kasey and Barry Woody, celebrate their fifth anniversary on the 26th. My niece, Kristie Turner, will be 52 on the 29th. Happy birthday to Ruth White Moore on Oct. 2, and to her nephew, Harold Parrish, on the 3rd. Until next time.

by John Brasseaux From Curiosity To Conversion Have you come to this article out of curiosity? Please dont leave. It may lead to your conversion to Jesus Christ. Two thousand years ago three thousand souls were converted to Jesus Christ, having at first only curiosity. It was the Jewish feast of Pentecost. Jews from all over the Roman world had converged on the city of Jerusalem to observe the annual festival. But something different and strange to them took place that day. They were drawn to the location where the apostles and other disciples of Jesus had assembled, hearing a sound from heaven which sounded like a rushing mighty wind. When they got there they saw what appeared to be tongues as of fire distributed and resting on each of the twelve apostles. Various responses came from the audience, including mockings and accusations that the apostles were drunk. But not for long. When the apostles started speaking in the languages of those represented from various nations, and each one heard their messages plainly, the audiences attention focused on what was being said. Peter, whose message only is recorded (Acts 2), applied Old Testament passages which explained what was occurring, and concerning the event which had recently taken place in Jerusalem, concerning this Jesus who had been crucified. The convincing proof that this Jesus was the long awaited Messiah, and that He was alive, having been raised from the dead according to the Scriptures, and was exalted at Gods right hand, produced faith in those who heard. Their curiosity which had taken them there, no longer focused on wind and fire but on the person of Jesus Christ, who convincingly had been shown to be the Son of God. Conviction of sin set in, and now a solution was sought to have their guilt removed. So the question followed: Men and brethren, what shall we do? (Acts 2:37). Jesus had, prior to His ascension into heaven, instructed His apostles that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem (Lk. 24:47). They are carefully carrying out His instructions. So, the response to those convicted of sins was, Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins (Acts 2:38). These acts of faith would result into salvation (40). Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them (Acts 2:41). From that point on, when the simple message of the death, burial and resurrection of Christ was preached, the response and result was the same. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved (Acts 2:47). Would you like to know more about this Jesus and His way of salvation?
