Used shipping containers are the refuse of
modern, internationalized, consumerist societies.
About 50% are designed for a single use. The
cost of logistics for their re-use being prohibitive,
they simply pile up at major shipping nodal points
and are left to rust. The problem increases as we
consume more and populations grow.
Upcycling used containers is an extremely green
and environmentally responsible alternative.
Structurally sound, constructed of full penetration
welded steel tubes, they are frequently triple
code-required strengths. A home made from
them provides sturdy, inexpensive square footage.
Each unit is delivered onsite for about $2000.
Three high cube containers make a gracious
three bedroom home of 1298 square feet and 9
ceilings. We propose softening the industrial
quality of the containers using simple wood and
trellis screening elements that provide daylight
shading on critical facades. The opposition of
wood and exposed corrugated steel provides
design counterpoint. Strongly expressed forms,
containers have a unique, lego-like beauty.
Unitized kitchens are installed prior to delivery.
Foundation footings are extremely compact and
affordable. The structure is raised to encourage
natural air circulation. The houses could be
constructed as recognizable containers or not, as
desired for local conditions, with optional spray
stucco covering the steel inexpensively. Insulating
value is provided through rigid panels mounted to
interior faces and high-tech ceramic heat
reflective paint, with a living roof for the container
tops to reduce heat gain with minimal upkeep.
Designed for long term durability and minimal
maintenance, containers are an ideal, affordable
building material.
