Learning to Read
Sight Words and Reading: Your child will do a significant amount of reading in their first grade year. You can help them to make significant progress by practicing their sight words with them as often as you can, and by having them read their decodable books to you repeatedly. The sight words need to be recognized instantly. Children should not try to sound out sight words.
Homework:
Monday-Friday simple worksheets in a packet which reinforce the lessons of the week, or finish work students did not complete in class. Packets are due on Friday. Please encourage your child to do some of the packet each night. They should not try to get it all done in one night.
There are many resources available to help your child grow as a learner. If you have internet access you can visit the following sites: EngageNY ELA: http://www.engageny.org/resource/grade1-english-language-arts EngageNY Math: http://www.engageny.org/resource/grade-1-mathematics Spelling words and sight words: http://www.k12reader.com/first-grade-spelling-words/ Learning games: http://starfall.com/
