Undergraduate Technique Curriculum All undergraduate students will master the skills listed below over the span

of their degree program. Tests on the skills will be administered on a scheduled determind by the teacher and individual student. Mr Jensen will keep a record of completed skills. SCALES: All major and minor (melodic and harmonic) scales with three different fingering systems. Level 1: Separate bows, quarter-note pace at q =120, off the string between each note 100% intonation. All 3 fingering systems. Level 2: 16th-notes at q =120. All 3 fingering systems Bowings: detache, spiccato, slur 4, 8, and 16 notes per bow Level 3: Virtuoso level (optional). 16th notes at q = 160 Same bowings as Level 2 ARPEGGIOS: Four octaves in all keys. 8 chords per key, as laid out in Galamian/Jensen chapter 9. Practice Level 1: Separate bows, q =120, stop the bow between each note Level 2: Acceleration System, tested at q = 80, both with separate bows and 3-note slurs. DOUBLE STOPS: Work through the entire red Galamian/Jensen book, with special attention to 3rds, 6ths, Octaves, and 10ths. The test will cover scales and sliding exercises.

VIBRATO: Work on all the exercises in the vibrato packet provided to you. Practice using many different sounds/colors you may be tested on any of these: Romantic (think Dvorak), impressionistic, calm, energetic, ethereal, lyrical, aggressive, lazy, timid, mournful, etc... OPEN STRINGS: Set metronome at 60. Play single open string, two full bows for 2 clicks, 4 clicks, 8, 16, and then 32 clicks.

Technique Curriculum continued POPPER: Play any twenty Popper etudes. (5 per year, minimum) PIATTI: Play any four Piatti Caprices. (1 per year, minimum) PAGANINI: Play any two Paganini Caprices (minimum). COSSMAN: The third study from the Cossman book. (copy can be provided for you) Level 1: 4 strings at mm = 144 2 strings at mm = 152 Level 2: 4 strings at mm = 160 2 strings at mm = 176
