An extortion syndicate has started targeting Taiwanese businessmen in Malaysia by posing as Taiwanese gangsters in need of money. They threaten harm if the businessmen do not meet their demands. At least 40 Taiwanese businessmen in Thailand have been targeted so far in 2022. Taiwanese police are working to identify the masterminds behind the scheme. Additionally, a South Korean national was charged in Malaysian court for using counterfeit money at a casino in Genting Highlands two months prior. A women's group in Malaysia also opposes hiring maids from China due to concerns it could damage family relationships.
